High ceilings, a spacious room, quiet most of the times – I felt incredibly relaxed. And the room service was great too. The carpet looks very dusty and needs cleaning, and the front door kept banging open and shut in the strong wind, which could be heard throughout the house at times

Radiator in room wasn’t working and despite reporting it not fixed whilst I stayed. Clearly not looked after and maintained well.

- tbarz643129 (10/5): A beautiful place to stay - This time we were in a lodge at the far right end of the different rooms and apartments available. We had a terrace with a shared garden, massively space in the room and the most comfy bed of them all plus a really warm bathroom. (So not used to from home..., hence _really_ appreciated!) It was very peaceful and quiet, I enjoyed it very much - relaxation is easy in the beautiful surroundings of the hotel and golf place. Anyone working in and for the hotel from reception to cleaning ladies, restaurant, bar and gardening staff - whoever we spoke to everyone is exceptionally friendly and memorable! I love coming to the Donnington Grove.

- Cbazal (10/5): Beatiful setting and helpful staff - We stayed for two nights while my wife attended a nearby conference, and I had a day to enjoy the surroundings. Before our stay, we had asked for a room with a view, and a particular one was identified and promised to us. However in the event we were initially offered a room without any view. When we pointed this out, Kaia, who was on reception, kindly went to great lengths to find us a suitable room and prepare it - we are very grateful to her. It was a summerhouse room with a beautiful view across to the lake - it was comfortable and we slept very well and greatly enjoyed the stay. Some may not like the fact that the practice putting green is just outside the window, but it didn't bother us. We also found the restaurant and bar staff very helpful.
- Andre (1/5): A beautiful be night getaway ruined by poor service and not receiving the room advertised and booked. Only saving grace - The grounds were amazing. Customer service non existent. Given the room key and basically told to find the room ourselves, had to ask where to go. Think they said about checking in after but the language barrier did not help understand him. Room not at all what it was like in the picture and when showing reception and asking for the room booked we were advised it was not available. He then got us to check in and still no information about parking, restaurant or breakfast or any information at all. Room was in desperate need of a refurb, quite dilapidated with one window overlooking the hotel roof. The one we booked had three large windows overlooking the ground and a sofa area, which this didn’t have. Bath to disgusting to use and shower had no pressure. After speaking to another staff member, they advised that with the wedding that was on, they were short staffed and doing back to back opening and closing shifts. Apparently there was another bar but it was being used by the wedding, not that we would have known. Impossible to get ice for the room, reception just not helpful. Saw about 6 staff members and not one smile or hello. Reception just ignored our hellos every time we passed and the last time passing he was too busy watching something in his phone.

No communications about why this kept happening but clearly some kind of fault or door triggering that needs to be looked into.

Decor very dated, chipped and peeling paint in the bathroom. Very old tatty rug which was curled at the edge so a serious trip hazard in the bedroom. Also one of the water glasses in the bedroom had a chip out of it so again bit of a health and safety issue

- nhope579602 (2/5): Fire alarm problems - The fire alarm went off multiple times in error over the course of the evening. This woke our young baby up twice before we insisted we move out of the main building. The error was known to the hotel prior to us arriving but we were not offered different accommodation. The danger of a fire alarm going off randomly is that they cannot be ignored so this brought huge stress and anxiety to the trip. One staff member tried her best to support but even she was embarrassed by the situation. This completely ruined the weekend away. I still haven’t heard back from the management of the hotel.

- carys835 (10/5): Beautiful family-friendly hotel - We arranged for a large number of our family to stay at the Donnington Grove over our wedding weekend. The reception manager was incredibly helpful and the staff were very easy to communicate with. The bookings process was not the smoothest in the world, but any bumps in the road were dealt with quickly and professionally and they never lost the personal touch. Absolutely gorgeous place to stay, will definitely be recommending.

Always thought it was out of our price range. But got a great deal for two nights in Summer House number one. The hotel is set in the grounds of a 18 hole golf course. Magnificent drive up to the hotel, but watch out for golfers! Reception easy to find and hassle free check in. The hotel has a stately home feel about it. Free WiFi and parking. Our room has it dedicated parking space. The room was divine, and large. Well equipped, with extra bedding. Lovely wet room with large shower. Plenty of towels and complimentary soaps. The light in the bathroom was on a motion detection, and took ages to turn off. As did the extractor fan, so we turned it off at the main switch. The bar and restaurant are on the lower level of the main complex. I am sure there is a lift available. Modest sized bar. On both our visits no Asahi beer on tap. We never ate on the first night . Drinks reasonably priced. Breakfast excellent. Attended on by ' Stanley Tucci'. Excellent array of food. Only fried eggs on display, not sure if you order scrambled or poached. Lovely selection of continental breakfast. Tables and chairs excellent. On the second night we ate in the bar. Caitlin on duty. Wow she worked hard, whizzing around. Oscar her little helper. Burgers very reasonable and filled us up. Excellent skills all round. All staff we met were very friendly. Especially the room attendant. Will definitely return.

- Joyce (6/5): Very disappointing stay in a lovely hotel in beautiful grounds but now in dire need of refurbishment and improved servic - The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and for us its location is ideal as near family. From earlier this year the hotel now allows dogs in their lake view rooms which are separate from the main building, with their own front door and a patio and quick access to a grassed area. We have stayed here many times but first time with our dog. Dogs are allowed in the bar where you can have breakfast/drinks/snacks/evening meal. Our room was freezing cold. Radiator controls were jammed shut, and we had no means of putting on heated towel rail in bathroom as worked on same system as radiators. I had to go and find someone to check in, as reception and surrounded area deserted at 6.30pm. Luckily I know my way round the hotel so went to the bar and a member of staff there apologised and came back to a still deserted reception to check me in. We ate in the bar in the evening but the food was very disappointing. We both had fish and chips and most of my fish was inedible, nearly all dried up batter and very little fish. Loads of laundry bags were piled up In the room beyond reception and also outside the Lake View Rooms. This is a lovely hotel which needs a lot of money spending on it to bring it up to standard. I think it must be the golfers that keep it going.

- 889DavidB889 (10/5): Three day trip with friends - We thought we had come to the wrong place when we arrived as it is so amazing an entrance and drive! Very nice rooms in a detached lodge (room 11) but we can see drawbacks to that if it’s raining😉 Excellent food for breakfast and evening meals (although the dessert choice was limited). A special mention must be made for Hussine who was friendly, attentive and flexible and made our experience all the better. Perhaps a bit of time and money needs spending on the exterior woodwork and paintwork of the bar and restaurant Beau’s. Overall really excellent - relaxing and peaceful.

- James (8/5): Generally comfortable, and pleasant experience. - Generous sized room, comfortable bed, good supper and breakfast, and very pleasant staff. The room was very cold when we arrived, and the underfloor heating is very slow to respond. It would have been helpful if that had been switched on before we arrived.
- Mummagee (8/5): Great Experience - Our group of 7 (usually 8) retired teachers spent 3 nights together at Donnington Grove in early March. We were at college 60 years ago and reunite twice a year for a few nights of fun and laughter! Between us we have, plenty of age related, physical needs and all of these, from the initial booking to our time at the hotel, were listened to, and responded to with understanding and a smile. The staff; front desk, restaurant staff and the excellent chef, cleaners, grounds maintenance and support staff, were, without exception, superb. Nothing was too much trouble for them and we thank you all. The grounds are beautiful and are a pleasure to explore. There is a golf course on site and, during the day, the bar buzzes with golfers, enjoying a drink, good food, and a chat. The rooms are comfortable but, if you're in rooms 107 and 108, note that these two are hot, as they're over the kitchen, and noisy because of early morning deliveries! The hotel itself is comfortable but the carpets and decor are 'tired', although this didn't detract from our enjoyment of our time there! The hotel advertises spa facilities. These are on site but the hotel does not have an on-site pool, although there is an arrangement for access to a nearby pool. Our group agreed we'd had one of our best reunions in 30 years at the Donnington Grove Hotel and Country Club. Taking everything into account, the outstanding factor was the quality of the staff and the ability of the chef. Thank you all, we'll definitely see you in the autumn!

There were 24 of us in total ranging in age from 3 months to 80 years old and all had a great, fun weekend. The Events Manager, Gemma, was incredibly helpful and accommodating throughout the planning process. The staff on duty were all very helpful. Donnington Grove is a beautiful place to spend a weekend.

- khris62 (8/5): Lovely setting, friendly locals and good price! - The room was in a separate building overlooking the driving range and lake. Lovely setting Peaceful and quiet. Parking is close by. Room good, clean, functional and decent size. The bathroom is of good size; however, the towel rail definitely needs changing - the rust is very noticeable and not pleasant. It lets the room down. And this is the reason for one star lost. The reception staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Thank you! Can recommend this place and we will definitely return in the near future. As noted above, the rusty towel rail suggests maintenance is maybe low-key - all these little things make a big difference to how fee-paying customers view a room

It is amazing for a short trip. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It is a quiet area where you can walk, play golf, enjoy the nature The cold tap water wasn't working but didn't have a huge impact for me as I was only there for one night and I used the hot one instead 😀

- RussellS941 (2/5): Atrocious experience throughout - What has gone wrong with this hotel?? - I spent a few days at the Donnington Grove on a training course. The experience of the hotel facilities was appalling. The lunch sandwiches were basic and the same on each day. Staff were hard to find most of the time (I think they were at the Golf Club), the gents toilet was blocked and there appeared to be no signage closing it off or any attempt to fix it. I've seen better quality and cleaner toilets in remote African villages.
- Diaz007 (10/5): Friendly staff - go out of your way! - Good price obtained - we stayed in the Lake view room 9, which was very nice. Tranquil setting, overlooking the lake and golf driving range. A couple of things let it down: a very rusty towel rail and insufficient pillows. However, the receptionist staff on check-in on 11 Mar and check out on 12 March where very friendly and helpful. We've stayed here before and will do again in the future - we like the garden room, which are our favourite!

Two beds pushed together for a double bed wasn’t that comfy. Like most of this type of accommodation these days, in need of some TLC but I guess someone’s yacht needs an extra deck more.
- ogb9psjax6 (10/5): break away - an overnight stay , an excellent place , in a unique location , the hotel im pleased to say has not been over modernised like some people would expect ,(some people want immaculate fixtures and fittings dont expect that here and thats the charm of the place it has its old dated feel where the room we stayed in retained a 70/80s look in the main part of the building , which is great if your sick of the modern "hilton look" the sprawling room of 305 where we stayed felt like you could be lord of the manor , the other rooms i think were of similar nature by the look of it , we took a look at one of the ground floor rooms away from the main residence , again the front facing room had a view to die for , with a much more modern feel to it if you wanted a traditional wow factor room ( again the best of the old and the new depending on your taste ! would recommend (to top it off the food including a meal at night and breakfast was exceptionally good (staff also very freindly , etc etc , if anything the cost of the room for what your getting seems excellent and possibly underpriced ! what also is understated is you are in amazing grounds with a backdrop of a castle just behind the hotel to fill your time with a walk round the perimeter or into newbury ( would thoroughly recommend this place as great value for money !!
