Guest Reviews
- Danuta (10/5): - This was a great place to stay. Fantastic views of Richmond and the surrounding country side and the same time an easy walk into the centre. Very dog friendly and good dog walks from the doorstep. Bedrooms were big and everything very clean and in good condition. Food really well cooked.
- Anna (6/5): - The staff were helpful and friendly however the room although clean, was jaded and in need of some maintenance.
- Dean (10/5): Holly Hill Inn - The room was spacious and comfortable. There was a charge for a cooked breakfast but was well worth it. The cold breakfast was included in the price. Pet friendly and will definitely stay here again.
- Alan (10/5): - Staff were attentive, engaging, helpful and overall excellent
- Steve (10/5): - Lovely traditional Inn, full of charm, great service and staff
- Sally (8/5): Clean and comfortable - Clean comfortable room, friendly staff
- Sean (8/5): - The outdoor fenced off area was fantastic for our dog to have a runaround. Also the evening meal we had in the pub was excellent quality and reasonably priced too, the breakfast was also very nice and plenty of it.
The staff were all very pleasant and easy to talk to.
Overall we had a lovely stay, and we would recommend to friends and family.
- Magnus (10/5): Excellent Staff - Nicky and Helen really did go the extra mile for us, the stay was superb.
- Denise (8/5): - We enjoyed our stay at Holly Hill Inn, the room was quiet, clean and comfortable. The view from our room was nice as we could see horses in the field and an overview of Richmond.
The owner was very friendly. It is a in a good position to visit Richmond - a 10 to 15 minute walk downhill and obviously uphill on the way back!
There was a slight problem regarding breakfast as we had booked our stay including breakfast. We assumed this would be a traditional cooked one, however on arrival we were informed that we had to pay more if we wanted a cooked breakfast. This should be made clearer on the booking site, especially as the reviews mention the "cooked to order" food.
- stephen (6/5): - large room and shower room, large bed, clean. lovely view over Richmond. However, shower room tired and needs refurb, the view is marred by old bits of wood and rubbish on the path outside the window. The surrounding gardens and access path need clearing of discarded equipment, and general rubbish.
- Patricia (10/5): - The owners could not do enough to make our stay comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly and welcoming - Wonderful welcome and lovely staff team. Lovely comfy clean bed but rest of room and stairwell dusty and a few cobwebs in corners.
Food delicious, home cooking.
Staff friendly.
- J I (8/5): - Excellent location, comfortable. Service good and food was really good value for money.
- Shaun (10/5): - Absolutely excellent service very friendly staff and the breakfast was 10/10 definitely be stopping here again when were next at the races
- Nick (10/5): Great place to stay - Spacious, clean room with fantastic view over Richmond and the castle; helpful, friendly staff; nice little pub; good breakfast.
- Anne (8/5): - This was a convenient stop on the nearby C2C National Trail and met our needs.
- Jane (8/5): Good experience marred by a few things - The Holly Inn is a beautiful place. Atmosphère and staff friendly and helpful… phone first if you need to eat !
Room was clean beds ok and sheets although pillow had a blood stain( droplet on it)
Although I paid for better room was given a cheaper one upstairs. Here the room smelt of fried cooking and bathroom whilst clean was old and mouldy in the corners .. water from shower good. I would stay in this room again at the cheaper rate. Not full . Lovely garden for dog and our furry friends welcomed by all . Breakfast good although my bacon was inedible as hard. I think it’s worth noting ownership has changed in last month or so which may have an influence , could be so much better it has the makings of……
- Mark (6/5): - Not so good. Lacking basic amenities
- Alison (10/5): - Nice clean, comfortable room. Very friendly staff and a good breakfast. Easy to park outside.
- Melanie (10/5): - Nice quiet scenic place with lovely staff and nice clean spacious rooms would definitely recommend.
- Graeme (8/5): Nice stay in a great location - Great location , stunning views , friendly place , nice food
Room 3 , did not spoil trip but mattresses felt a bit basic and oddly whilst hot water to basin taps , could not get the shower hot . So evening and morning tepid quick shower . Maybe my error or problem with shower
- joanne (8/5): Lovely stay - Last minute night away just what we needed. Lovely stay, would recommend if staying in the beautiful Richmond town.
- Rob (10/5): Ace - Really enjoyed our stay while visiting Richmond, breakfast was great too!
Only one small gripe that the shower was'nt good, the dials were back to front, to get it warm it had to be on cold and when it was warm it was a trickle.
- Richard (10/5): Idyllic setting - Fabulous location, food and service.
I will definitely use this Inn as a base for exploring the local area in the future
- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfortable - excellent food - All good, except radiators not turned on.
- Barbara (2/5): Dreadful service & misleading details - Booked for bed & breakfast with normal property details on hotels.com. Had cancellation to 24 hours before. On arrival, I was told by staff that the kitchen had been totally removed for ‘maintenance’ purposes so there was no food available & breakfast would cereal only. I stated I wouldn’t be getting the service I expected so she went for her manager. When I asked why I hadn’t been informed of the this prior to my cancellation period expiring, I was told the kitchen issue was an ‘emergency that day’ & therefore unforeseen. I just don’t believe this because how were they able to identify a fault, get tradesmen in & totally strip out a kitchen in one day? Also, if the fault related to plumbing, why take out the kitchen cupboards & carpentry? This is only done when re-fitting a kitchen & this type of work should be communicated to booked guests. I was told this shouldn’t be an issue as my breakfast was ‘free’ The price was advertised as bed & full breakfast which now wasn’t available but they also told me breakfast isn’t served before 9am which isn’t advertised anywhere on their property details. I started work at 8.30am so I would never book a room with breakfast after 9am so this was misleading but she stated ‘I should have called ahead to ask’ Why would anyone think do this when a vast majority of hotels serve breakfast before this time? As a final insult, they refused a refund because the cancellation period had expired. Hotels.com were also totally ineffective in helping me
- Robert (10/5): - We finally got to The Holly Hill Inn, due to the weather (snow) we were contacted a couple of times by the staff, warning us about the weather, which was nice.
When we arrived the staff were so friendly and helpful and we arranged to have food in the restaurant, which was first class, and the breakfast in the morning was just as nice,, so highly recommended this place…. Definitely booking again thank you
- James (2/5): Unfortunately not recommended - Good breakfast with friendly service. But the room was tired and dirty; the bed was uncomfortable; and the room was freezing because no heating was provided in November.
- David (10/5): - Absolutely perfect from the start to finish.
Staff so friendly and welcome dogs, food was excellent, hotel room was fab.
Definitely will stay again, most comfortable stay I have ever had taking my dog with me and he is not a small dog ( Rhodesian Ridgeback) but they made us so welcome.
10 out of 10
- John (6/5): - It was fine. Staff friendly and helpful. Room ok and bed comfortable. Couldn't get shower warm enough to have a shower. Overall, so-so. But location was great and we enjoyed the short walk into Richmond and around the town.
- John (8/5): - Superb views over to Richmond Castle from the large garden. Dog friendly in all areas. Lovely breakfast. Walkable into Richmond town in about 15 mins although he Inn sits on the blind corner of a quite fast road so care needs to be taken.
- John (10/5): - Room was clean staff very friendly nice location
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Lovely staff. Ground floor room perfect for an older couple and with magnificent views. Very thoughtful basket of 'extras' in the bathroom. Fab breakfast.
- Brian (10/5): - Lovely big room, lovely big bed, lovely big bathroom and lovely view.
Attentive and friendly staff.
- Charles Jason (10/5): - Bit unsure about checking out as we had to leave early
- craig (10/5): Great location and views of Richmond Castle - We had a nice big room which provided everything we needed for our stay.
It’s a lovely location with great views across to Richmond Castle and the town, so you can sit outside and have nice food and drink with the views.
It’s a short 10-15 minute walk into the centre of Richmond.
- craig (10/5): Great location and views of Richmond Castle - We had a nice big room which provided everything we needed for our stay.
It’s a lovely location with great views across to Richmond Castle and the town, so you can sit in the beer garden and have nice food and drink with those views.
It’s a short 10-15 minute walk into the centre of Richmond.
- Vinayak (10/5): - Lovely stay for one night. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable.
- Sian (8/5): - Comfortable stay. Friendly staff. Service a bit slow at times.
- Michael (10/5): - Quiet location within walking distance of the town centre. Comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. Good beer and tasty food.
- Samantha (10/5): - Great breakfast 😋
- A (10/5): super friendly staff - super friendly staff
- Jennifer (8/5): Reasonably priced B and B - Big room. Dog friendly. Breakfast good
( served 09.00 until 10.30). Free car parking. 20 mins walk to Richmond.
- Helen (10/5): - Attentive and friendly staff! Great breakfast and lovely room.
- Kate (10/5): - Lovely setting, excellent views, very comfortable room, staff friendly and helpful
- Joanne (10/5): - We stayed for one night whilst visiting family. The room was clean and comfortable and we slept very well. We had a lovely breakfast the next morning. Would recommend.
- Barbara (10/5): - I LOVED the horses outside my window each morning. The staff was very kind.
- Marc Ashley (8/5): - This is very conveniently situated close to Richmond. It does require a hill climb though either side of the river.
Welcome very good, shown to my room and provisions of Milk and Water checked. Coffee wasn't replaced on the second day though and No Housekeeping done to the room, which wasn't too good.
Shower OK, but there wasn't really anywhere to put Shampoo and Shower Gel, which made things a bit awkward and no hairdryer in the room.
Bar area very good and drinks good quality. Full English Breakfast excellent, but my own personal preference is to have coffee at the end not at the beginning as it was cold by the end of Breakfast.
I would say overall my experience was good, but there is room for improvement.
- Mr DAVID (10/5): - One of the friendliest places ive stayed. New management since my last visit but i think she's got it sorted.
Breakfast is a little late for my work timetable but an excellent sausage sandwich doggy bag provided instead.
Great choice of real ale.
Thank you
- Simon (10/5): - Wonderful location, the views are outstanding
Room is fantastic, clean and huge
Staff are very attentive and there is nothing I would want to change
- William (10/5): - A great place to stay - plenty of parking, good food, great views, helpful staff, steep hills.
- Michael (10/5): - Clean and comfortable room with an excellent cooked breakfast and friendly staff.
- Donna (10/5): - Excellent rooms, great views and staff very friendly.
- Stewart (10/5): - Bedroom & en suite furnished to a high standard with extras beyond what I expect from such a property. Even a miniature fridge with fresh milk in my room instead of the usual uht. Hotel run by two girls who are natural and welcoming. Food was excellent and bar prices and measures were very good. The bar & foning area has a comfortable atmospey
- Jacqueline (6/5): Disappointing Stay - The room we were given was nice, however the mattress was soft and dipping and you could feel the springs. It definitely needs replacing. There was a pair of black thick used tights left next to the bin in the bedroom. There were no cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. put out or offered at breakfast you had a jug of orange juice on the table. During all my stays in hotels, guest houses and there have been plenty, there has always been cereals etc. You were offered a cooked breakfast. This came with two halves of toast with a pat of wrapped butter on each piece which had melted so you didn’t have to use a knife to butter your toast you just poured it on and your hands were full of melted butter. There were no side plates to put the butter wrapper on. The mugs of coffee were given to us on a not very clean tray. We were disappointed with this stay as the reviews for this hotel were good. However rumour has it that it has just recently changed hands. We saw a welcoming sign with the names of the previous owners placed in a bin outside.
- Emma (10/5): Warm, welcoming, excellent value for money - Very warm, welcoming. Great value for money. Lots of really thoughtful touches in the room, fresh milk, toiletries, slipers, nice tea and coffee. Excellenr breakfast. Would definitely recommend.
- david (10/5): - Absolutely charming and beautiful Country Inn. I was made to feel very welcome, almost family like from the minute i entered. A modern yet Olde world feel bar area, The food was amazing and freshly home cooked and the staff were more than accommodating in every way. Room was lovely and amazing views over Richmond. I highly recommend anyone visiting this area to book in to this fantastic place. Thank you
- Christine (10/5): - Friendly hosts, fantastic food. Lovely night away
- A W (8/5): - Welcoming staff and location. Highly recommended.
- Siobhan (10/5): Great place to stay - What a beautiful inn… really lovely.
- Diane (10/5): - Lovely helpful staff and friendly locals.
- Stephen (10/5): A great place to eat, drink and rest - The staff could not have been more helpful especially whet it came to me needing an early start. The beer was great especially the Wensleydale beer. As for food, good wholesome and perfect for a cold winter's night.
- Chris (10/5): - Lovely couple of nights spent here.Nice country pub great food and comfortable rooms.
The staff and locals were very friendly and welcoming.Great that they are dog friendly and the staff were really accomodating.
- Linda (10/5): Highly recommend - Arrived pretty late in the day and although the kitchen had closed hosts were kind enough to still prepare some food for me.
Very friendly and helpful reception, room and bathroom were spotless and courtesy basket in the bathroom contained everything you might need. Mini desktop fridge had fresh milk in it for tea / coffee etc. which was a welcome change from the usual milk pots! Lovely views over Richmond from the rear of the pub were an added bonus.
- Kevin (10/5): Overnight Stay - Amazing stay at Holly Hills Inn Friendly hardworking staff and comfortable clean accommodation good food friendly locals and loads of atmosphere Would definitely recommend a stay
- Helen (10/5): Perfect - Lovely place to stay. Friendly staff/owners, nothing is too much trouble. Clean and great value, lovely cosy atmosphere. Rooms are great needed for nothing. Gift baskets and other facilities were brilliant, we will be back!
- Sarah (4/5): - Whilst the room was a good size and clean, unfortunately the en-suite shower didn't work. At best there was a tiny, scorching hot dribble which you could barely wash soap off with. Although after about 2 mins, that stopped completely and I ended up having to wash myself and rinse my hair with a mug filled up from the sink. I mentioned this to a couple in breakfast who said they'd had the same experience.
I raised it with the owner on reception, who was extremely rude. Apparently the accommodation is very good value for the local area, which seemingly excuses having an en-suite which doesn't work. And in the same breath, she then told me that they'd had problems with all the bedroom bathrooms and had a plumber out recently.
My advice? Save your money, please! Go choose one of the other lovely B&Bs that are all around Richmond - don't waste it here.
- Daffyd (10/5): - Lovely room with everything we needed & some lovely touches in the hospitality box. Breakfast was perfect. Amazing view from the room. All staff very friendly & extra helpful. We shall certainly stay again.
- Graeme (10/5): Spotless - Spotless
- Francine (10/5): - We had a lovely stay for a family wedding in Richmond. Rooms are lovely and the location and views were great. Our meal on the evening was great and couldn’t fault the breakfast made to individual order. The only issue was our shower wasn’t working too well but didn’t spoil our stay and I’m sure they’ll have that sorted quickly . Staff were very friendly and helpful .
- Elaine (10/5): - Fantastic stay, staff were wonderful, friendly and very accommodating. Food was spectacular. Loved everything about this property and would definitely recommend it.
- Graham (10/5): Great stay…..will be back!! - Stayed here for a quick business trip!! Great friendly service!! Outstanding breakfast!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Value for money - Very good value for the price. Good location. Very friendly staff
- David (8/5): - You have a steep drop/climb if you want to walk into Richmond, or a fiver for a taxi. Room 3 was warm with no pub noise in the evenings. Menu was limited, but the chef fell over backwards to accommodate "specials". Daily room serving was barely adequate. Nice views from the pub garden over Richmond.
- Felicity (10/5): - .

Seriously can't wait to come back here!!
- Dianne (10/5): Fantastic views - Lovely room with great views of the town. Staff were really helpful and allowed us to check in a little earlier. Lovely full English breakfast included. Just less than a mile out of Richmond but steep walk back up the hill. Would stay again.
- Peter James (10/5): - Stunning, beautiful views, staff very friendly, good food, good ambience and friendly locals, would certainly come back if in the area.
- Samantha (10/5): - Staff very friendly , very clean loved the view of the horses etc out of the window , just mattress a little outdated , too soft in the middle but apart from that excellent , enjoyable stay
- Lucy (10/5): - Lovely staff, cracking breakfast, comfy room with lovely views. Definitely stay again !
- Penny (10/5): Amazing - Fabulous setting. Holly Hill is clean and friendly with lovely food. Stayed the night before a Christening and was made very welcome. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. Had a meal which was lovely. The room for the Christening was stunning and the buffet was one of the best. Will definitely be returning.
- June (8/5): - It is a beautiful pub with extremely large bedrooms. The bed in room 1 was flund to be a bit lumpy and there was no heating in room 3. Dinner and breakfast were excellent.
- Elaine (10/5): - Lovely view from bedroom window, quiet and value for money.
- Helen (10/5): Will come again - The service was brilliant and the breakfast was excellent.
- Anthony (10/5): - We liked everything about the property and the staff were really friendly and palite
- Sally (10/5): - This property was wonderful for my night away, clean and well presented. Very friendly staff, great cooked breakfast too.
- Andy (8/5): Comfortable place to stay - A very nice inn and spacious rooms with lovely view over the surrounding countryside and Richmond. Unfortunately the heating was not working properly and so was a bit cold in the room although it was the coldest night of the year. An electric heater was provided to help boost the temperature.
- Karen (10/5): Holly hill inn - Very friendly and helpful staff, very comfortable room with excellent view and breakfast was lovely. Definitely stay there again.
- Kathryn (8/5): - Room was spacious, bathroom clean but could be updated.
Welcomed by a nice barman, new to the job but was very kind and helpful. Very tasty breakfast served by a polite, friendly chef. Only problem was the manager who was rude and obnoxious, belittling staff and ignored customers. Whilst eating breakfast the manager arrived and started shouting obscenities at the chef, swearing in front of young children trying to eat their breakfast in peace. On checkout my key was taken by the cleaner who was also very polite whilst the manager stood behind the bar and didn’t acknowledge me.
Lovely place to stay with a good location but new management is definitely needed.
- Alan (10/5): 1 night stay - Very pleasantly surprised at a large well appointed room, en suite was spacious, if I were to nit pick which is a stretch, the shower could have been more powerful. The only thing I could fault, from the welcome to the goodbye after a hearty full English we were well looked after.
- Paul (10/5): - Had a lovely stay. Highly recommended. Everything was excellent from start to finish. Thank You
- Steven (10/5): Cracking - Excellent place to stay.
Rooms big, fresh and very very clean.
Good food and drink.
Great breakfast sets you up for the day.
Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Definitely return.
