Guest Reviews
- Vanessa_Metro (10/5): Beautiful staff and centrally located - The staff at this hotel are excellent! They were so thoughtful bringing breakfast to our room knowing we’d arrived at 3 am and might miss it or want to sleep more after- so very very kind
- Gill (8/5): - Great location for walking to tourist spots - witches market, cable car station/teleferico, Plaza Murillo and lots more. Very helpful reception staff and breakfast staff. Room spacious, clean, with good hot shower. Hot herbal tea and purified water available at reception. The only downside was that there were roadworks outside the hotel and the road in front of the hotel was blocked off, meaning my taxi driver could not find/get me to the hotel at 0330 am! Went to another hotel for the rest of the night, and the Golden Palace Manager organised a replacement night for me - thank you very much.
Keine 24 Stunden Reception. Empfang unfreundlich und spricht kein Englisch.
- Chris (10/5): - The staff are beyond exceptional 👌
- Carolyn (8/5): - Nice and clean. Large comfortable room.
- Jane (10/5): - Staff lovely
Good sized room
Walkable to main la paz sights and cable car station.
- 932pk (8/5): Super Helpful at the Golden Palace! - We stayed several nights at the Golden Palace and found it to be comfortable, clean and secure. Family-owned and run, Eric and his wife at the front desk, made up for any shortfalls! They were so warm and friendly, they were happy to help to make sure we had a great visit. They gave us a new room away from the street noise, they got us a heater for the room when the temperature dropped and they helped us find winter coats, banks and directions to vegetarian restaurants without getting ripped off. They made LaPaz easy and manageable!!! Thank You Golden Palace!!
- 832fleurr (6/5): Weird Hotel - Stayed here a few nights, we are a couple but ended up with 3 single beds. The window coverings are not worth having and let the glaring sun in. The bathroom is very small, takes a long time for hot water to come through. The breakfast is very sad, and frustrating that you cannot get a normal/plain tea. The reception are friendly. Cannot get WiFi in rooms, so have to sit in lounge which is dark and cold. Quite noisy due to street noise.
- Foddy14 (10/5): Really good quality for a budget hotel! - The staff are really friendly, speak good English and go out their way to help. Breakfast isn't exciting, but the price is the same as some 12 or 16 bed youth hostels and having own space makes a nice change. Plus the hotel is very clean and the shower is lovely and hot (give it 5 minutes to warm up mind). The area feels safe and is very close to town and the local restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes. Will be staying here next time I'm passing through la paz.
- rastyka (2/5): Disapointing - This hotel was upmarket about 40 years ago. Water licking from the ceiling right next to bed. Night club next door. No air condition, pretty cold at night. Have to wait 5 minutes for a hot water. Street is quiet busy and not the cleanest one. Was almost empty, not surprise. Comes with a breakfast, but was also limited.
- aussiedave717 (4/5): A disappointing hotel - We stayed in the hotel three nights. On the first day we reported that the safe was not working. The staff promised to fix it. When we left on the third day they were still coming to fix it.
The staff were decidedly un-helpful and not customer focused.
Some of the rooms were internal with unusually placed columns in them. Not conducive to a great stay.
Breakfast was just OK.
The big problem with the hotel was on each night there was a disco which could be heard through the hotel. I note this has been mentioned in other reviews.
If you want a late check out then it is very expensive if only for half an hour or so.
- Global777383 (2/5): Awful hotel - I hate writing this, but I just don’t see what others have written as the same hotel. Two nights had discos so loud the room shook. No natural light and windows that open onto the corridor for others to see you in your room.
The man on reception deals in cash and makes up prices. The rooms are basic (which was expected) but the housekeeper comes at 8am.
The hotel is an events hotel - so expect loud noise, lots of people through reception and no one to care that you are there.
This is not basic Hotel - this is a nightclub with bedrooms.
- jessien20172017 (8/5): Lovely hotel - I stayed for 3 nights here during a visit to La Paz. The hotel felt very secure and quite upmarket for the area. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and they also offer a cheap and efficient laundry service. The room was large and very clean with hot running water and a view of the city. The second day we came home to see the room had been tidied and our belongings folded, which was nice. The hotel was a little cold but this wasn't a major problem as we were out exploring most of the time. The breakfast was fine. Our only complaint would be that the chain lock on our door was broken leaving us feeling a little bit nervous, especially since I awoke twice on the first night to hear loudly and vividly what sounded like somebody attempting to enter the room. This gave us a bit of a fright, so try to get a room with a working chain lock. Overall a great stay.
- andy (8/5): Good position for exploring La Paz - Friendly relaxed staff. Noisy builders across road in daytime with loud music. Comfortable. Could do with a heater though warm enough at night
- Frank (8/5): Friendly service - The receptionist Eddy was super friendly and helpful. The rooms are big and clean. Not the most updated interior but for a night to stay over all fine. The lobby looks a bit like a Chinese wholesale shop and the area at night is very quiet. I almost missed the entrance of the hotel because it's all shut up and closed and you need to press the bell.
But I had a great time.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Basic hotel - Basic hotel, fair service, terrible breakfast, good laundry service, excellent location. Had to ask for foot/hand towels, and to have room cleaned sometimes.
- Ruonan (8/5): very good hotel in la paz - Speaks good English
- Verified traveler (4/5): Tiny unclean rooms, freezing cold - Staff are a bit hit and miss - hopefully you get the nice ones that are not condescending! The rooms need a good spring clean and I’m not sure the quilt has ever been washed (yuck). Pack thermals as it’s colder inside the hotel than outside and no heater is provided. Excellent location, easy walking distance to everything
- George (6/5): Maybe it was the elevation - Customer service is the pillar of this business, the room was cold, community was dirty, blankets had a funny odor & the bed wasn't comfortable.
- T (8/5): nice place - very clean and comfortable room.
nice shower with hot water. continental breakfast. friendly reception staff.
i just wish they arranged me for a 60-70bs taxi ride like all the other hostels/hotels did for my friends. i paid 80bs.
Anyhow .i d come back to this place
- GusLife (8/5): Fancy for the area, kind staff yet noisy. - We stayed here as a part of a group tour booking. It is located just up from the Witches Markets which is a bonus, good cafes and shops.
The rooms are very clean, hot shower with supplies, big spacious bed and television.
What I will mention though is it's on such a noisy street in the night. Over the weekends it is a party area for locals and very loud through the night. Bring some ear plugs.
- Dot2007 (6/5): Adequate hotel in a slightly downmarket street - Stayed here at the end of a six week South American trip. Rooms were clean and comfortable, hot water unreliable, fairly noisy due to dog population of La Paz and traffic but this would apply to any hotel in the San Pedro district. Street outside was fairly dirty and full of vendors so getting around is a little difficult. However, close to main tourist areas and restaurants and souvenir shops. Breakfast ordinary. Just a place to put your head at night.
- claudiahR2590KE (10/5): Front desk man took care of noisy people - I stayed one night in this hotel and I enjoyed it. It is very secured at night and the people at the front desk are very polite and speak and understand good amount of English. Some noisy men arrived near our room and another person and I complained, the front desk man took care of it and the rest of the night was very quiet.
I enjoyed the hot shower, blow dryer in the room, the room was very clean and had towels, soap, and shampoo ready. Wi-Fi was very fast and password was provided in the room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): OK hotel in La paz - We had 2 stays in this hotel. First one for one night left us a bit disappointed as the room was not the type we ordered(twin instead of double) , was not properly cleaned- bathroom was dirty you could see steps on the floor and some pubic hair in the shower, and it was very cold during the night.
The second stay was for 2 days and we got luckier with the room - was clean and spacious - the bed cover was dirty though.
The personal was helpful, we had our luggage stored there for a few days while we explored the salt flats, which was very useful for us
- jc vega (6/5): Nice location, close to downtown. - But things. The room was to smal, carpet are old, looks dirty.
Good things, the hotel just too be a good hotel, now is be come old but is still in good shape.
Is more that ok for the price.
- Muimu (6/5): Nice for the area but still so so - La Paz is split into two - the more affluent area, and the more general area of witches markets/shops/travellers etc. Golden Palace is one of the nicer hotels in this area, but it could use a bit of work.
The rooms were freezing, I phoned reception and asked for more blankets and they told me nothing was available. I was quite surprised seeing as the hotel wasn't at full capacity that they couldn't give me a blanket from another room.
They offered a heater instead which I said would be great, they said they would bring it right up...I waited for half an hour and called again, again they said it would get brought right up. In the end I gave up.
- E H (8/5): Good hotel for late night arrivals - My stay was of the kind where you arrive late at night and leave early the next morning, and the staff at the front desk, who spoke excellent English, were more than accommodating of that. Room facilities fine for my purposes. Didn't use other hotel facilities, other than luggage storage for a couple of days, which the hotel was happy to accommodate. No heating in rooms that I could see, and it was a bit cool in the evening, but shower had the best pressure and genuinely hot water, to the standards I would expect at home.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Descent place - It's a nice place, hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Room is not bad. Close to old town, which is good and bad: close to all the old town tourist spots but dirty and old neighborhood, uphill climbing, and local stands randomly block roads nearby (as we learned is typical in Bolivia) so hard for taxi or cars to reach.
- Elcaballero (8/5): Good hotel near the historical center
- Hotel is well situated near the center in Sagarnaga. Close to some markets, also the famous witch market. Surrounding is not very clean though. ATM machine right next is handy. Restaurants are some blocks away. Breakfast is average for Bolivia. Rooms a r spacious and clean, showers work well.
- Ian (8/5): Convenient and Clean Hotel - Lovely stay at golden palace located centrally in La Paz
- David (6/5): Doesn't accept credit cards - The location is OK but not in a good part of town. When booking through hotels.com I was advised I was not being charged until check in.
I booked a room with a double bed and they tried to give me a room with two single beds. When I said no, they said the only rooms available had no windows. I had no choice but to accept,
Upon checking out, the hotel then told me I had not yet paid and then said we don't accept credit cards. As I was leaving the country 3 hours later I did not have the cash, I had to go to an ATM to get cash which could have made me miss my flight.
The cash only should be mentioned when booking or at least at check in time
- beaverdam7 (6/5): Nice location but super dusty! - While it is a nice lower mid-range hotel, the floor of my room seemed to be never cleaned for several months at least. The large balls of the dust (like 10cm diameter..) was present on every corner of the floor, it's so strange that they couldn't notice this? Also the bed cover was stained badly and plain nasty, though sheets were crisp and clean. The bathroom was very clean, nice hot shower with a great pressure. Wish they clean the floor and bed cover well, with that, this hotel can be a pretty good option on calle sagarnaga. The reception staff were super nice so that's a plus.
- RobT634 (8/5): Great front desk man, decent hotel, not the most pleasant location - The guy we had on desk spoke good English and was incredibly helpful.
The room was good, although like a lot of South America the room on the road side can be too noisy for some, although I was ok.
The location is close to the main hub of this end of town, however the street it is in itself I would walk alone late at night and smells horribly of garbage.
For the price pretty good
- KevinRBrisbane (8/5): Nice Hotel Very ordinary breakfast - Really like the hotel. Double Room was nice size with a king bed. Staff on front desk very friendly and helpfull. Thankyou Milton and Eddie.
The down side is the very ordinary breakfast. Stale rolls, cold coffee and not much choice. Improve the breakfast and this place would be awesome for the price.
- colewanderer (6/5): A so so hotel in Witch Market Area - Centrally located right in the famous witch market in La Paz. We arrive early and lucky enough that they had the room ready but the room itself is very dusty so asked them to re-clean our room but it never happen. The staff are friendly but can't speak english. Boring breakfast.
- Taffboss (2/5): Dodgy taxi prices. - Having visited La Paz several times before in previous weeks, I knew that a price of a taxi to the airport should be around 60 bolivianos, 70 bolivianos at night or at busy times. I asked the hotel reception the day before how much a taxi would be, and they quoted me 80 Bolivianos. Rather expensive, however due to the amount of luggage I had, I reluctantly agreed on this price to avoid the stress of flagging a taxi down in the street.
The following day when checking out with all my luggage the receptionist then announced that my taxi was waiting outside and the price would now be 100 Bolivianos! I walked outside and asked the taxi driver directly how much it would be and he couldn't or wouldn't answer my questions. The receptionist frantically ran out behind me, and then proceeded to have a discussion with the driver. Miraculously the price was suddenly back to 80 Bolivianos! (still way over the going rate).
- IntrepidNZ78 (10/5): Best budget option in La Paz - This new hotel is perfect if you're on a low budget for your trip. The street isn't beautiful but it's close to the main hub so convenient. The service is friendly, the rooms are big and comfortable, the wifi works well and basically everything is new so in good condition. Hot showers are great too. Excellent value.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Noisiest hotel ever - Thus by far one of the noisiest hotels I've stayed in. The entire hotel seems to be made of tiles, which reverberates every noise including:doors closing way down the hall, guests coming and going, music being played in a room down the hall, toilet noises from adjacent rooms, and if you are lucky like I was, there will be a party on the 2nd floor with music that could easily be heard all the way to the 5th floor until midnight...
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel close to Witches Market... - Decent option for La Paz stay. Central location, very close to witches market area, although the nearby streets themselves were dirty and smelly. Like all LP, area doesn't feel very safe or relaxed. Choice of restaurants and bars nearby.
We appreciated the hotel letting us check in early after long bus ride to LP and the rooms were comfortable with a nice shower.
Breakfast was poor IMHO.
- FeFanti (10/5): central and clean - the room was great, clean, comfortable. it is located in a part of the city where there is street market, so it can be a little crowd, but it was good to visit everywhere. near to calle de las brujas, plaza san francisco. they can keep your luggage during the day after the check out.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Ótimo - Ótima
- Sharon (8/5): Surprisingly comfortable - Despite there being no heater in the room, the blankets were surprisingly warm and toasty making sleeping comfortable. The only problem in the room was that since there was no carpeting and the beds were on wheels, furniture kept rolling around a bit when you sat down or leaned on it. The staff was friendly and helpful.
- TravellingAllijohn (6/5): Okay hotel, great service, bad location - I stayed here at the end of a Gadventure tour since their main hotel was full. The hotel itself is fine - clean and comfortable with a decent continental breakfast. I was able to book another two nights after thinking about moving because of the location (more on that in a bit). The staff is nice and helpful. One offered me another room two floors up on my last night, since a wedding reception was being held on the floor below the one I was staying on. I moved - it didn't help much, but fortunately the liquor licenses expire at midnight and so did the reception. Ear plugs are a definite necessity in three star hotels.
The room I had was tiny, with a small window looking out on nothing, really, but my traveling companions had a room overlooking the street, which was noisy early in the morning. Definitely a place to park your bags and go, like all G hotels.
I'd have given the hotel another star except for the location. It's a few blocks up the hill from Av. Illampu, which is very busy and therefore pretty safe. Sagarnaga after dark is deserted. All the shops are closed and the street merchants gone home, leaving the sidewalks covered in smelly garbage juice. I would not have felt comfortable walking home by myself at all. After 10:00 pm or so, the hotel closes a massive corrugated steel door over the lobby entrance, and you have to ring a bell and wait to be let in after that. Not a comfortable feeling.
Still, weigh all that against the fact that my room was about $30.00 US a night - hostel prices for a room with a private bathroom and shower with hot water (let it run for five minutes before giving up). And breakfast, and within easy walking distance of the Witches Market.
- holidays2407 (8/5): Good Value and Central - This is a good centrally located hotel. The rooms are clean and the staff friendly. While the centre of town is only about 6 blocks away, it (like everything in La Paz) is quite a climb (due to the altitude). The rooms are adequate without being large and there is a lift from the reception.
Breakfast is quite good, for South America, cereal, juices, fruit, toast and omelette.
Close to many cheap clothing outlets, restaurants and Witches Markets.
Would recommend.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Lovely Hotel for a few nights in La Paz - After staying at lesser places, this was a pleasant change. It had the feel of a real us style hotel with very pleasant and helpful staff. But a bit far away from tours (they don't pick up here), so need to take cab through the "Centrum", which is very congested.
- Marcelo (10/5): Brand new hotel. - I booked for one night and stayed six. Perfect location, only 2 blocks from the main historic district and 4 from the San Francisco Church. Staff is very helpful. Good breakfast. Quiet location.
