Guest Reviews
- Renee (8/5): - It was right by the train station which was great. The meals were extensive. I was so full. Wow. No complaints...just sooo much food, ha ha.

- Claudia (8/5): The place is well located, the hosts are very nice and friendly. Their traditional breakfast was incredible. - The location I am a very sensitive person, and the smell of fish (from their restaurant) when we arrived until the next day, was unbearable. I just commented that, because it can help someone else that is sensitive like me.

- David (10/5): - Great location by the train station, easy to cross to downtown. Not busy when we were there, had the onsen to myself, hot! Nice room
- Victoria (7/5): Good price and awesome art, but not the cleanest Onsen facilities. - Loved the art in the hostel and the staff kindly let us store our luggage longer. The Onsen is very small and wasn’t the cleanest facilities.
- Liew (9/5): room very clean and bed very good for our rest - onsen good and clean, breakfast very good hard to find restaurant for our dinner
- Karen (10/5): - Nice downstairs restaurant. Spacious room. Sadly no lift to this side of station. Not the inns fault of course.

- Jennifer (9/5): Good place to stay in Katsura. Good value and lovely dinner. - Lovely traditional Japanese room. Dinner was great making the most of tuna straight from the fishing boats. Near the railway station. Enjoyed wandering around the port region. A good place to stay after the Kumano Kodo trail. The onsen was more like a big bath but adequate.
- Karen (10/5): - The room was comfortable and quite large. The onsen was lovely. The food for dinner and breakfast was amazing!
Perfectly located for the train station (but quiet), and only a few minutes walk to the port.
- Mark (10/5): -
- MTomer (10/5): - Great location, clean and well maintained facility. Private onsen in the hotel.
The tuna dinner is amazingg - must have.
Staff were helpful, the art around the hotel is super cool and adds to the value.
I sent my bag 4 days before as i started the trek, when i arrived to the hotel the bag was already waiting for me in my room.
Enjoyable and relaxing stay for sure after the Kumano Kodo. All was great.

- Kim (8/5): - Great location near the train station. Neat and clean hotel. Owner gave us an umbrella as it was raining and she was very happy to help with bag storage.
- Richard (6/5): It’s a basic hotel. - It’s close to the train station and bus stop. No elevator, shared bathroom and showers. No privacy. Dryer didn’t work.

- William (9/5): Great place for an immersion into a Japanese “Minshuku” overnight stay and a taste of locally sourced Japanese dishes. - Location, convenience, quaintness, delicious/very filling food, kind service. Non-scenic view from room.
- Mona (9/5): - Location - close you train station Hostel style, would prefer private bathroom.⁵
- Wei Qian (7/5): Great location, good value. - It was very convenient, great location just in front of the train station. Rooms were spacious enough, however do note that bathrooms and toilets are shared. Amenities were provided Onsen tub seems abit old and water was dirty.
- Anton R (9/5): - Spacious room, free parking, good breakfast It would be good to have just a shower without need of visiting onsen

- sarahbF1956OA (10/5): A fantastic dinner and overall experience - We would thoroughly recommend staying and eating at Minshuku Wakatake. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful, and we had a truly amazing dinner of multiple courses of local tuna. Breakfast was also first-rate. It's extremely convenient for the station at Katsuura, and was good value. We'd certainly stay again, and will remember the dinner for years to come.
- Greg (9/5): -
- kamila (10/5): Good value - Onsen in the building, large traditional rooms. -
- Einat (8/5): Good place to stay - Very friendly and helpful staff, great food options at the inn and also just next to it. Very spacious room.
It is traditional style but with a modern twist, so shoes can be worn until you get to the room, which is convenient. There is no option for sending luggage directly from the hotel (there's an option down the road).
The shared restroom is not very esthetically pleasing. There is no cattle at the room (there is a shared spot to get coffee).
- Laura (10/5): - The dinner was amazing! They offered a great variety of tuna dishes and a sake selection.
The staff was simply fantastic, we forgot a souvenir in the room and they kindly contacted us to inform us Shared bathroom
(Sangjik) (7/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): Entspannung - I had a wonderful stay at wakatake, the couple who runs the place is super sweet and helpful! They also have a dog called kyuuri, which I was allowed to pet.
Also next to the Hotel is a very good restaurant that is kind of their sister branch, food there was amazing. But also the in house breakfast had everything you need to start the day and was delicious. They have a communal bath with onsen water which I really enjoyed. After that I went to my room and watched a DvD, as they have tons of DvD‘s and a TV+player in the room. My stay really had everything I wished for, and it was the perfect place for me to relax.

- Victor (9/5): Molt ben situat. Personal molt atent i amable -

- Lulus (10/5): Excellent stay - Of course the food! That's the main reason we chose to stay here. Their dinner is a bomb and it'd be a waste if you book the room but not the dinner. The minshuku owns an eatery too, and they specialise in tuna. Not sure if you can enjoy the same dinner in their restaurant. Tuna was cooked in all kinds of method - from raw sashimi, to vinegared, in soup, fried, and the unbelieveably huge baked tuna jaws! Tip: Starve yourself before the dinner, but even then you might not be able to finish everything. Wife host is hospitable. Husband host is a sake connoisseur so be sure to order sake for tasting! They also have citrusy body cream in the room which smelled so fragrant on the skin. Nothing much. Public bath (separate gender) was small and not open all day. It can accommodate at most 3-4 at a time. Time your bathing time if not it can be crowded.
- Aroon (8/5): Very good -
- Christina (9/5): Lovely and rejuvenating! - This hotel is located in a small town in Japan. If you are looking for a vacation where you can enjoy great local cuisine, traditional Japanese fare and a soak in an onsen (hot spring) then you need to stay in the hotel. The hotel has a traditional Japanese bathroom where there is communal bathing, think of a Turkish bath. Oh yes they also serve up a nice traditional kumamono food! I am used to having a bathroom in my own hotel room, but this one doesn't have one since. You need to go out to the hallway to use the loo and if you need to take a bath, you need to go to level 2 where the onsen is to take a bath. If you are paranoid about nudity and seeing someone of your own gender nude, then perhaps this hotel might not be for you. I have been to traditional Japanese onsens before so the nudity doesn't phase me at all. This is part of their bathing culture.
- Xiaodong (6/5): Pleasant - Friendly staff, yum breakfast The room has no locks which makes people feel not too secured.
- Lauren (9/5): A perfect oasis after a long hike - Perfect location for us. Out of the main tourist areas so it was quiet but plenty of excellent public transport and was beautiful right along the river. We stayed 2 nights and while we planned to atay in koguchi at first, the lack of room had us comr back here. We ended up feeling greatful for it. They stored our luggage too so we could go with just day packs. The facilities are older but clean and the private onsen are really really amazing. Dinner was fantastic and extensive and everything was fresh. Every single staff member we interacted with was delightful and kind and helped us even with finite English. At the end of a long like, the clean robes and meals and onsen felt unreal. If you miss the bus from hongu you're going to be walking a bit. Slightly older facilities but its all clean
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- D_vel (9/5): Amazing dinner, clean and comfortable stay overall - Amazing set course dinner!! No words, hands down the best dinner experience we've experienced during our kumano kodo pilgrimage. The futon on the tatami floor was a little hard to sleep on - not ideal if you have back issues or aren't used to sleeping on the floor. I also felt the toilets could've been separated according to men and women as it was just communal
- Bexplease (10/5): Exceptional - I was traveling by myself and booked a larger room by accident assuming that was the only one left. The owner thoroughly took care of my request and suggested that I switch to a single person room which cost less. I absolutely enjoyed the stay and the food was tasty, well presented and generously portioned. I would definitely recommend this place! If anything to suggest...I would suggest to put some full body mirrors in the rooms and public areas just so that people can check if their yukata was properly tucked in :) my room's wifi signal wasn't great but I have unlimited data so that wasn't a big issue for me.
- Jonas (10/5): Good value guesthouse near the station - Nice staff. The room was quite spacious. The feel of the guesthouse is cool and oriented to art. There are laundry facilities and we enjoyed good Japanese style breakfast. The location is great since it is very near the station and within walking distance to everything needed. Good value. They also received our luggage. Downstairs there is a nice restaurant.
- David (9/5): Superb - Traditional but quirky place with a nice, big room and small but cosy baths. The dinner was incredible - we were blown away by the delicious dishes that just seemed to keep coming!
- Petra (7/5): Would stay again. Good value for money. - If you have a big room is a good place to stay.
Staff was super helpful.
Right across the station.
Cheap. Onsen is too small and could be a little more clean.
No shower facilities which is hard because onsen is too small and with limited hours.
- Danilo (7/5): Still good value for money - Close to train station and town centre No elevator
- Ting (5/5): Passable - Bath and toilet are not private, you have to leave room to use them.
- Cameron (6/5): I was surprised the room didn’t have a bathroom but the breakfast and the Onsen made it worth the money - It had an Onsen 🛀🏻 The room didn’t have a shower or toilet
It’s more of a dormitory set up but u have ur own room
- Xiaojing (10/5): 非常好 - The location of this homestay is extremely convenient. It's right beside the pedestrian overpass near Kii Tanabe Station. The facilities are well-equipped, and there is a hot spring bathtub in the bathroom. The tuna set dinner provided is delicious. Both the boss and the service staff are considerate and polite. There's no need to worry about communication problems either. The boss can use a translation software to write out clear communication content, showing kindness and consideration to the guests.
- Ivan (9/5): Superb -
- Pauline (10/5): Good breakfast and helpful staffs. - It is very close to the train station and bus station. The breakfast they provided were very delicious. They do provide vegetarian meals, which is very rare in Japan.
Mika, Kieda and the other young boy are very helpful.
Thank you all.🙏🙏🙏 NA
- Philipp (8/5): Good place to go hiking - - directly next to the train station and a good base for hiking Kumano Kodo
- traditional Japanese rooms with futon, but surprisingly comfortable
- classic Japanese breakfast (rice, fish, egg, Natto, …, tea)
- washing basin in the room - shared bathroom
- Beiermann (7/5): Great place to stay after hiking the Kumano Kodo! - Very close to the train station. The beds are a little thin, but appropriate for a Japanese style room.
- Chun (10/5): Very great! - I recently stayed at this hotel and had a wonderful experience. The room was impeccably clean, which made for a comfortable stay. The staff were incredibly helpful, allowing us to store our luggage both before check-in and after check-out, making our travels much easier.
One of the highlights was the dinner. I highly recommend the tuna meal, it was absolutely delicious! The onsen was also very relaxing, providing a perfect way to unwind after a long day.
The location is convenient , just a short walk from the JR station and bus stop, which made exploring the area a breeze.
Additionally, there’s a manga shelf near the back stairs. If you’re a fan of anime, you’ll definitely enjoy this feature!
Overall, I had a great stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfort and convenience.
- Nockolds (8/5): Very good - Great location and friendly staff.
- Tetiana (8/5): Very good -
- Nicholas (5/5): Passable -
- Yun (9/5): Superb - Great location. The train station is a couple of minutes away. It is also close to the port and shopping stripe. The rooms were quiet and we didn’t hear the train at all. None
- Boon (9/5): Superb - Location near train station, amenities in the room, good dinner
- Ming-jiun (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, delicious dinner and big collection of sake to select .
- Teresa (7/5): We had a pleasant stay. - We stayed here our last night in Japan, after finishing the Kumano Kodo. It fit our needs by being a nice, clean budget hotel right next to the train station. I It did not have a true onsen. It is, however, a budget hotel.
- Zheng (8/5): Very good -
- Benedikt (10/5): A perfect location near the station - The staff was really nice and the hotel has a great location directly at the station.
There are very nice paintings in the hallways and the rooms are nice, clean, and comfy.
There is an Onsen bath, separated by gender, in which tattoos are allowed. And there is xiffe and Tee available.
Overall a great experience.
- Brian (8/5): Very good -
- Christopher (9/5): Superb - Great food. Great hosts. Onsen was excellent. No lift
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Kailesh (9/5): Superb -
- Kuan (8/5): Very good - The onsen was fairly quiet so was able to use it myself. I had also sent a luggage to this hotel and they were able to receive and they even brought my (heavy) luggage upstairs to my room without asking me! The hotel was also located right across the station.
- Rahat (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional - Great Japanese style room of good size. So close to the station. The dinner meal was spectacular. Our best meal while in Japan. A great place to finish walking the Kumono Kodo trail. My son didn't like the shared onsen, but I was okay with it.
- N (7/5): Pleasant, rustic, enjoyable. - Japanese traditional breakfast spread was served which covers a good variety of both prepared and fresh ingredients. All types of the dish are well prepared and of high quality, beside being tasty and delicious. The shower area and onsen are placed in the same room and the sign says to leave the door closed but unlocked so as to let other guests in. For us who are not used to the onsen culture, this could make us feeling slightly nervous.
- Richard (7/5): Ok for one night. - It was easy to get to from the train station. Able to have dinner (with a sake tasting) and breakfast. Shared bathroom and multiple use shower down the hall. Check out was a bit early for us at 9:30am.
- Karen (7/5): Good -
- Alexander (10/5): Comfy stay, Incredible tuna feast - What a lovely stay I had here. I got drunk before dinner and then staggered into the most incredible feast I've ever had. This town lands a large amount of the tuna that comes into Japan, and they had such a variety and skill with it in the restaurant. Incredible sakē, great quality fish, good sized room. A genuine delight. I liked it all
- Emma (9/5): A perfect short stay - The staff, firstly. A bit of a language barrier but so helpful. The guesthouse is just lovely. You get a real rustic feel. Extra padded mattresses too. There is an onsen on site and, you can book to have a traditional Japanese breakfast too. Be sure to visit the owner’s restaurant next door. The tuna is epic! We enjoyed 2 nights here to see Nachi Katsuura waterfall and we loved the sleepy town. You’ll have a relaxed stay here. The only thing is, the shower is in the onsen. It’s a sit down one but I’m not complaining just sending an FYI
