- Mary (8/5): - The room was comfortable and the staff was courteous. The food at the restaurant was very tasty. The restaurant did not always have everything on the menu. Later I figured out it is likely due to resource management. For instance 3 out of the 4 days we were there they didnt have drip coffee. This is likely because there were hardly any guests so they dont make a pot of coffee. However on a day they had an influx of guests, it magically appeared. Some basic items luke tuna sandwiches was not available though it on the menu. With minor adjustments they can guest experience better. We also pai cash for our meals. However when checking out, they gave us bills for 2 meals to be paid. We had to get restaurant staff come and verify that we in fact always paid cash. My adviceto guests would be to maintain your own copy of paid receipts if paying with cash. If you are using hotel approved taxi services, be aware that they change rates based on which staff member quotes you the price.. though the overall service was good at the hotel, i was disappointed with this inconsistentancy and felt we were being taken advantage of.

- Jared (10/5): - The staff were nice and I was even able to check in early, fantastic after a long flight. The entrance is gated which is for safety and I saw lots of hotels like that, but it made me uncomfortable about the safety of the area, but then I was told that’s what Johannesburg is like.

- Anne (8/5): - The room was very modern and beautiful. It had that wow factor. Unfortunately, it was located in a difficult part of the city, so were advised not to venture out. Location is not great.

- Hussein (10/5): Good location. Food needs work. - Room was great. Location was good to get to my morning meeting, but not safe to walk around at night. Restaurant was so-so - main course was good but dessert was overpriced and tasteless. Wifi was great.
- Heather (8/5): Comfortable and clean - This was a stay of 2 weeks while completing a local project. The rooms are comfortable, Good quality bed with comfortable pillows. I appreciated the availability of tea and coffee in the room, unusual in Africa. Wifi was fast enough even at weekends when it was more busy. As reported in other reviews the pool is in shade for part of the day because it is west facing but is in sun most of the afternoon. Not a place for a serious swimmer though! The hotel car park has over 50 spaces. A secure place and accessed by barriers. A security guard is always present. A sizeable shopping complex is about 100 m from the hotel and very safe to walk to and from and around. There are plenty of eating places for all pockets and tastes and also 2 supermarkets, some arty shops a cinema and more. Its sometimes difficult to get service in the bar/restaurant as the staff are not always visible and there is no call system. The menu is limited but food well presented and priced competitively with the local restaurants. The security staff of the neighbouring shopping centre tend to have loud conversations outside which echo around the neighbouring buildings and can be early in the morning so I suggest ear plugs for a longer night

- Sim (8/5): Modern hotel great location - Staff were wonderful and helpful, room was large clean very modern and comfortable. I also liked the convieniece of being able to walk to the shopping centre located right behind the hotel. The only downside was I asked for a quiet room as high up as possible and I got a room on the first floor and the first two nights it sounded like there was a party in corridor as the neighbouring guests all seemed to belong together and liked to go from room to room at midnight/1am.

The neighbouring Newton shopping centre is clean, safe and good value for anyone staying. Can't recommend highly enough.

I was able to check in early upon request, get access to Vhupo Tours, eat the delicious buffet breakfast and have a brilliant hot and soothing shower after a 17-hour flight. My room was beautiful and I had a lovely pool view. Prudence, Waheeda and two other front desk staff were accommodating and so helpful. Loved my tours with Vusi. Tremendous customer service with amenities such as meetings room, a gym, a computer station...couldn't ask for anything more.
- Jaylin (10/5): Get stay for a Pilanesberg Safari tour - The hotel was wonderful! Very modern and clean, with an excellent staff! The location might not be the safest place to wonder around by yourself at night, but the hotel is gated and guarded, and right next door is a new shopping area that has many police officers. We had a short visit but had an excellent time!

- Zanemvula (2/5): I Was Insulted - The stay was wonderful, the staff very friendly, until at check out time when I was charged for a breakfast that the staff insisted I ate. I never ate any breakfast at the hotel, I don't even know how their breakfast looks like. They failed to provided me with any document showing that I signed for any meal at all. After they detained me for some minutes while we argued about the issue they offered to wipe the debt off, saying that perhaps it was an error on their part. I was very much offended because I was embarrassed in front of other guests who were at the reception at the time. I was insulted and felt very small that. I am still very angry about this.

- Digby (8/5): Modern hotel in rejuvenated inner city Newtown - The City Lodge Hotel Newtown was less than a year old when we stayed. It is part of the Newtown Junction redevelopment. The hotel is within easy walking distance of Braamfontein pubs and clubs, Museum Africa, the Newtown arts precinct, 1 Fox Street and Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg. The double deck red tour bus stops right outside. There is a complimentary shuttle to Park Station for easy connection to the Gautrain. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. The rooms are well appointed with an in room fridge and face washer the only major items missing. Ice buckets and an ice dispenser kept our drinks cool. Another anomaly was that the floor numbers in the lift and room numbers are not synchronised. There is a modern cafe and bar with sundeck and pool outside. In hotel meals are limited to burgers and wraps, however a full breakfast is available. There are several restaurants and cafes in the adjacent shopping centre which is within the security zone of the hotel. Only one of which served breakfast.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice place - A nice place, smart, conveniently close to a shopping mall. The only problem is shuttle/taxi arrangement where hotel staff has to call around for a driver and it sometimes takes ling to get the driver.
- Nicholas (8/5): Oasis in Joburg - In a city that, deservedly so, gets a bad wrap, City Lodge was a nice treat. As it's generally not advisable to go out too far on your own in the city, so having a new mall across the street with some solid dining options and a stop on the hop on/off bus right in front of the hotel were two very welcome perks. Other than that, the hotel is very new, the staff was helpful and there was a nice little balcony off the room to enjoy some fresh air.

Breakfast was excellent but overpriced at 120 for a continental. Will stay here again when have business in the CBD. Not a very safe area in Johannesburg but hotel has excellent security and is gated.
