- Gladys (8/5): - Hotel Mar Rey is in an excellent location—right across from public beach access, making it super convenient for enjoying the beach or catching the sunset. It's also surrounded by restaurants, shops, cafés, and a pharmacy. While the hotel is older, it’s clean and well-maintained, with nice bedding. We appreciated the staff’s quick response when we reported a slow water flow in the shower—it was resolved promptly. The main downsides were some noise from outside (understandable given the age of the building and limited soundproofing) and the lack of breakfast or complimentary coffee. Overall, we had a comfortable and pleasant stay.

- Laura (6/5): - I like the pool, location, and cleanliness. The owners and their family live in the hotel. All their dogs are on site and unrestrained. They bark and awake the guests at night and in the mornings, early. My complaints to the owner were met with shrugs. Sleeping is a problem here. Even time by the delightful pool is disturbed. We stayed on the beach our last few days to get away from the constant barking. It was not like this last year. I love dogs, but I love my sleep and quiet on vacation. I will stay elsewhere when I return to Tamarindo in the future.

- Rob003 (10/5): Quiet Spot in Busy Surf Town - This family-run hotel provides a quiet room with on-site parking right in downtown. The beach is across the street, restaurants are all around, but somehow the courtyard pool and little patios is serene. Good wifi and A/C, guard at night and books in the lobby. We had just the room (with a fridge) but understand other rooms had small kitchens for longer stays. Especially appreciate the comfortable chairs outside for hanging out after hours.

- A9535YJlaurad (2/5): The Dog Pound - Imagine a hotel that sounds like your local animal shelter. Does that relax you? The dogs live in various rooms with their respective owners, who own and operate the hotel. This came as a shock to me, since I stayed here last year and enjoyed the property. New owners, I guess. No good location or clean room could make up for days of lost sleep that resulted from being awakened, daily, in the nighttime and early mornings (around 5:30 a.m.) by a shrieking Dachsund. But there were also the two Dobermans that could let go with their deep, gruff barks when excited by the Dachsund. All the dogs have free run of the place. They pee on the porches, in the bushes, poop in the parking lot, and come and go as they please. I complained to the hotel owner, who owns one of the dogs, and she was unconcerned. But the barking is not only in the mornings and nights. It continues throughout the day. So poolside is just more of the same. Just for reference, I have owned dogs my whole life; I dog sit for friends; I recently worked at a doggie daycare and boarding facility. I am what most refer to as a bona fide dog lover. I have been at Hotel Mar Rey for 4 days and nights and it has been exhausting. I am sleep deprived and my vacation is just 3 more days and I can’t wait to get out of this hotel. You could not PAY ME to stay here again.
- boguew (2/5): It’s a DOG’s life! - We have stayed before at the Mar Rey, had a wonderful visit, and wrote a glowing review. This time was a little different. The location is still perfect. It’s in the heart of Tamarindo, steps away from the beach, and close to everything. The room smelled quite musty when we arrived, but the A/C worked well and it got better after a day or so. The main complaint you read about is the noise. The hotel is in the center of town and there is street noise and a night club close by, so there is noise both early and late. During the day, if you are using the pool, there is near constant noise from the business next door as they repair ATVs, and run pressure washers and leaf blowers all day. We had hoped to hear birds and the surf, or just the quiet whoosh of the A/C, but there was no time of the day that was peaceful. But, that is just the environment outside the hotel. The stunning part was the dogs inside the property. This hotel is quite “dog friendly”. At the pool, there were as many as four dogs at a time running freely. Not just off leash, but their owners were often not even present. The dogs simply barked at the room doors if they wanted to be let in or out. Constant barking at any hour was perfectly acceptable to the staff and the hotel owners. We’ve been awakened one night and three of four mornings, so far It was not addressed. At all. Ever. Even after complaints. The dogs run freely onto all the guest room patios, nosing through your clothes, shoes, and belongings, and urinated freely on the walks, bushes, chairs, table legs, etc. we saw a Doberman run into a guest room through a momentarily open patio door and the family all fled onto the pool deck to get away. No one was bitten, but it was quite startling for everyone. The family with three of these dogs seemed to be the hotel owners. It was crystal clear that their dogs were a much higher priority than any guests. Our recommendation is find somewhere else to stay, or if you are still considering Mar Rey, at least ask whether the owners and their dogs are going to be in residence during your stay. Of course, if you have dogs and want a noisy place where they can run and bark totally uncontrolled, this is the place for you!! No need to ever walk your dog, you just open the door to your room and let them out! How convenient.

The room and beds were comfy, just a little noisy as the bikes zoom up the road in the early hours! The staff were really helpful and love the dogs!

- Denise (8/5): - I recently stayed at this hotel and overall, it was an okay experience. The room was somewhat clean—not spotless, but acceptable for a short stay. Had the basic amenities. Bonus for having a fridge and microwave in the room. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, no major complaints there. There were a couple of issues worth noting: One, there were holes in the window screens, which allowed bugs to get in, and two, the main door didn’t fully meet the floor, leaving a gap that allowed critters to come inside. These are small but important details that really affect comfort. On the positive side, the area around the hotel was nice and peaceful, which added to the overall relaxation of the trip. The shared kitchen and outdoor barbecue space was a great feature and made the place feel more social and convenient. It would’ve been even better if charcoal had been provided—or even better, if they had a gas barbecue to eliminate the need for charcoal altogether. If you’re not too picky and just need a simple place to stay, this hotel is a decent option, especially if you plan to enjoy the outdoor features. With a few upgrades, it could be a much better experience

- donaldmJ6633GT (8/5): Quiet, quaint and in the thick of it! - First time in Tamarindo and Hotel Mar Rey did not disappoint. This is not your all inclusive type resort. However, it has everything you need just steps from the property. First the Great—This place has an after hour security and closes the office at 10pm. Nice pool and you can stop at a local store and buy your own beer to enjoy. No bar or Resturant but you are across the street from Waffle Monkey (breakfast/lunch) and extremely close to El Mercadito which has every kind of food under one roof. Black out curtains and AC worked well. Close to shopping and literally 100 steps to the Pacific Ocean and the sunset (I counted). Staff does everything you need your staff to do, my thanks to them for being great! I would 100% stay here again!!! Not so Great—this is a small tourist town so as expected it can be busy/loud in the AMs. This is not the Hotel’s fault in any way but being located in the middle of town this is a consideration.

It goes right out to the pool and was so convenient not to have to use stairs with three little ones (this hotel is very kid friendly too!) The rooms are spacious and clean. The beds are very comfy. It was nice to have a little porch area to dry clothes and sit outside. There is a cooking area. The pool is gorgeous and everything seems really chill and secluded from the city. The beach is right across the street and there's an open shower by the pool to wash off sand before going back to the room. And all the restaurants that we went to were less than a five minute walk. It's not that big of a deal to me but the bathroom was really small. And there was no bathroom by the pool. It would have been nice to use a pool bathroom inside of our own for while we were swimming to keep our room floor from getting so wet.

- Sabrina (8/5): A really good option for low budget/ basic needs with great outdoors! - The staff is friendly, accommodating, the rooms have a decent size, comfy bed, the pool is great! For the price, a really good option. I loved the outdoor kitchen, though I wished for more amenities & structure there ( plates, cutlery, no oil, salt, pepper, no basics for cooking, really old cookware, etc). In general the outdoor is very well maintained, the indoors has gotten into the years & could use some replacement here and there. No hair dryer.
- Sondra (8/5): - The Mar Rey was convenient to everything. We’ve staying in Tamarindo many times and wanted to be on the beach this time. We did however end up leaving two days early. A few things … we were in the end room facing the parking lot and street. Which was quite noisy at night. We came back to our room one evening and there was a woman sitting on our patio who walked off the street to wait for her taxi. It was sorta unsettling having someone sitting at our door when we arrived back. She was nice and apologetic. There is security that sits there at night. We did not feel unsafe. Also be aware that the cleaning staff enters your room to clean without warning and I came back to use the bathroom after being at the pool and a lady was cleaning the room. We had all of our belongings out in the room. And I had to ask her to leave so I could use the bathroom. I didn’t feel like anyone was dishonest BUT we would have liked to be able to put our money and passports in safe before strangers entered. Would stay again just prefer a room inside the hotel complex not facing road.

The downside for our family was the noise/sound from the local clubs - it was very loud until late on weekends but a bit better on weekdays.

Unforgettable time :) The owners and staff are so welcoming, helpful and charming....you feel right at home before you even arrive on site because they ensure that your entire journey goes splendidly well. I could not have picked a better hotel....I am definitely returning there, but plan to bring my entire family with me next time! :)

The room was OK but furniture was dated and general impression was not very pleasant. Definitely needs some renovation for a better feeling. Also, the obligation to wear a wrist band for the entire three days of my stay was very annoying. I had never experienced this king of requirement at any other hotel.

- Heather (9/5): We were very comfortable there and would book again. - The staff was the best part of our stay, so helpful and friendly you felt like family. The property was on the Main Street directly across from the beach so a great spot with lots of restaurants etc. near by. It was very quiet and the pool was lovely. I highly recommend staying there. The bathroom could use an upgrade and some paint. Nice shower though.
- Sylvia (7/5): Centric, but...unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the male receptionist. - My experience was great with the female receptionist at check in; until I dealt with the male receptionist... I got a room for me and my mother with 1 double bed and a twin bed, so I asked him how much more I had to pay for an additional person. He had no right to respond to me the way he did. He got up from his chair in a face-off manner and said, "IT IS ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED TO DO THAT!!!, YOU'LL BE KICKED OUT IF YOU DO THAT!* threateningly. I said I'm sorry, I'm just asking a question, and there is no need to respond this way. I asked because the room has one double need and one single bed*. He just said, "YES, BUT THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE. IT'S PROHIBITED.* I said, "ok, that's enough, just give me another room, and additional room, and let's be done with this*. He said, "really? WELL THAT'S $120 For the room. I said ok, weird that it's more than what I paid for mine; but whatever, my cousin was already on her way. I didn't cancel just because it was non refundable. Besides that, the common grounds were well-kept. The rooms are outdated, but ok for 1 night, the beds need to be updated, or at least the mattresses it is very loud, so maybe update the windows to double-pane. The location is great, it is across the street from the beach, next to many bars, shops and restaurants.

- Corina (10/5): I loved it here and wish I could've stayed longer! - I went to Hotel Mar Rey for a single night after leading a yoga retreat. The place was very charming. The pool sublime. The room beautiful with a balcony looking over the pool. It's very close to the beach, restaurants, coffee & souvenir shops. I was impressed, especially for the cost. I would definitely stay there again. Wish I would've had more time!

- Greg (10/5): - We stayed here for a week in March and it was fantastic! The staff were INCREDIBLE, they live on site and they have a few pet dogs that free roam the property. It has a beautiful pool and is conveniently located right in the main area of town and literally just STEPS to the ocean. You’ll notice the reviews mention how noisy the hotel is because of its location and it definitely is noisy but it really didn’t bother us because we played so hard during the day we crashed hard at night and most of the bars and parties in the area wrapped up between 10pm-midnight. We would choose to stay here again, hands down.

- Brian (10/5): Very enjoyable, excellent location - The hotel is affordable, comfortable and in a prime location in Tamarindo. You can walk to the beach and all of the shops and restaurants in the area within minutes. This isn’t a resort, but has everything you need if you enjoy spending the majority of your time enjoying the beach, town, culture, and being more independent than a resort setting. The pool is a very nice spot to come back to and is a lovely setting, also has an outdoor cooking area if you want to prepare some of your own meals. They will also help you book tours/experiences as well if you aren’t as independent when traveling internationally. Staff were very kind and felt like good friends by the time we left!

Secure parking. - We had two rooms with one on the second floor and one room right below on the bottom floor. The upper room had a double balcony where we enjoyed cocktails after dinner. It's right in the midst of Tamarindo restaurants and shops. It was also across the street from the beach. We liked the proximity. Beautiful pool and jacuzzi. BBQ island as well. Secure parking. Family run business I believe. In that parking on the main street of Tamarindo can be difficult, we appreciated just parking our car on site and walking as everything is within walking distance. Since it is in the midst of all the party action, we did hear some of that as we fell asleep.

- Dianne (6/5): Pleasant - The hotel is clean, pool area is great. The location is convenient. Easy access to beach and restaurants. We did not get a good first impression of the staff. We had booked 2 rooms for 2 couples for 3 nights. When we arrived they only had a reservation for 1 room. The clerk suggested that all 4 of us share a room. We did not think that would work. We asked him to help us find a room in another hotel. He made 1 call and then said he couldn’t find anything. We used the wifi and eventually found a vacancy in town, but at a higher price. We told the clerk we would leave for the night and both return the next day. He wanted 1 couple to stay in the vacant room. His comment was”what am I supposed to do with the empty room?” We replied it wasn’t really our problem, they messed up, not us. At no point was an apology issued, nor did they offer to help us get transportation to the other hotel. He eventually agreed that we wouldn’t be responsible for paying for the Roo for the night. We returned the next day and the new clerk was quite a bit friendlier.

- Caroline (10/5): - We stayed for seven days at this lovely hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpful in booking transport to and from airport and our sunset cruise. We had a king bed that was comfortable. The hotel is right in the center of the action and across the street from the beach. The pool area was very cute, and the water was refreshing from the sun. It can get very noisy at night but a couple of more of margaritas helped to drown out the noise. Overall would recommend staying here.

The pool was surrounded by beautiful trees and plants making it feel tropical. The property was gated and fenced making us feel very safe. Our room was cleaned each day. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioner worked great, we slept good. We viewed other properties in the area for a future trip this fall. We will be staying at hotel Mar Rey! Beautiful decorated rooms, big terrace with great views over the swimming pool. Lovely staff. A bit noisy because of the location but this is the compromise you do choosing to stay very central.

The rooms have great balconies with seating. The pool was clean and there was a great area for preparing food. Beds were very comfortable. Some street noise, but that can’t be helped because it is in the middle of everything! Coffee maker in the room, but no coffee provided. Shampoo and body wash not labeled and no beach or pool towels provided.

- Michael (8/5): - Great location for access to the beach, dining, shops, banks, tour operators, and all the action. I also loved the large balcony with view of the pool, private courtyard like setting, and outdoor kitchen. the rooms are simple and have all the basics plus small fridge and small microwave. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Note: The downtown area of Tamarindo is concentrated around one main road and a couple side streets. The entire area can be a bit noisy in the evening until midnight due to the music at open bars, motorcycles, and other motorists. Only the outskirts of the town seemed to be protected from this. It’s quite lively! For in-town options this hotel seemed to be one of the best.
