- Patrick (7/5): Great scenic location but with horrible laundry - The view from the room was fantastic. The room was very spacious. Staff was helpful. Surrounding was lovely. The laundry was terrible. The drier only work 15 mins each time. Tried the higher setting of 60 mins. It did not seem to work. Instructions were unclear even after attempts to use Google translator. My poor 70+ husband had to make several trips down the stairs and down a long dark corridor that looks like a haunted house in a horror story. The onsen was full of rusted doors and rails.
- Jacinta (8/5): - The view from the room was superb. A lovely old world feel to the place.
- Sam (10/5): - Beautifu lakel view from room, quiet location
- Ho (8/5): -

- Mrs (10/5): Beautiful, relaxing stay for a family of 4. Would - We had 2 rooms for a family of 4. The rooms were clean, tidy and Japanese style. The location was fantastic. There was a playground next door. The view was amazing. It was within walking distance to restaurants and convenience store. Plenty of parking space. The onsens were dividing between men and women. Also an outside onsen. It was a relaxing and peaceful stay. Would stay again. I can’t really complain. Pillows were not comfortable. But I would say that about most hotels.
- Quentin (8/5): - The hotel’s construction is old, still using key instead of key cards, location is inconvenient compared to the other hotels in the town center, but hotel’s room has a beautiful view to the lake Toya.
- Jay (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Mel (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hui (5/5): Passable -
- Y*****n (7/5): Good - Lakeside with great view Limited breakfast may be due to low occupancy on a weekday.
- Rohan (9/5): Superb -
- Wei (8/5): Very good - The hotel is a bit old, for the pricing however I think it is fair price considering that the meal is served individually. Onsen is a bit old and run down though. looking at the current condition of the facilities, I believe this hotel has it greater day back then.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Beng (10/5): Exceptional - Great hotel with excellent view of Lake Toya.
- Ching (5/5): Passable -
- Joanne (6/5): Its okay but... - We liked the spaciousness of the room. Sorry to say,
The tap water was cloudy so we drank bottled water throughout our trip.
Breakfast was cold though edible but the spread was mostly side dishes.
The front counter guy was generally helpful although he looked glum before check in time. He was perfectly cheerful (180 degrees) opposite to how he was being 4 hours ago. It's okay though, we understand why he was glum.
The main lobby is super quiet, and it seems they were running low on staff.
The Onsen was mid but functional, 4 local grannies were using it as a day spa too.
Overall, mid.
It's also freaking far from the bus terminal, so prepare for a tough trek in winter to and fro.
Should be an okay walk during other seasons.
- Rico (8/5): Definitely is beautiful and stunning place to stay ! - sensational view after opening the windows in the morning !!
It is got stunning outdoor Onsen over there, shouldn't forget to try !! Haven't find one yet ! Haha
- Hui Shan (10/5): -
- Sun (6/5): The stay was decent for the price, but there are areas that need significant improvement. - The hotel offers a great view from the room, with a stunning sight of Lake Toya and Mount Yotei. The price is reasonable, and we felt we got what we paid for. The room was also relatively quiet, which we appreciated The room had a strong smell of smoke, and the bathroom was extremely small, making it difficult to use. We had to rely on the shared onsen facilities downstairs for bathing. While the hotel offers an outdoor onsen, it lacks privacy as the roof isn't large enough to shield the area, and guests in rooms with balconies above can see directly into the onsen.
Breakfast was another disappointment. Although the serving time is from 6:30 to 8:30, by around 7:40-8:00, many dishes were already gone, and the staff did not replenish them. If you come later, there’s barely anything left to eat.
- Wai (8/5): Very good -
- Seost (8/5): Very good - In house public onsen for guests to use. provided Japanese robe in the room. Traditional tatami bed and room. Give you the traditional Japanese ryokan feeling.
- maki (10/5): - Loved traditional styled Japanese hotel. Have read bad reviews saying staff don’t speak English and are not friendly, but that is not fair. They might not speak English (but are they obligated to speak English? No!), but we found them very polite and sweet. Before you complained, check your manners.
The price included breakfast and dinner. The dinner was traditional and it was so much! Breakfast was a buffet style. Delicious! We heard that they grow some of vegetables they serve.
We love everything about th
- Ma. (9/5): Cozy and clean. - Clean hotel with nice view. Friendly staff. Quiet. Top view! Bus stop next door. Onsen was a bit run down.
- Teo (8/5): Very good -
- Teo (8/5): 2 nights stay st Toyako Osen Hokkai Hotel. - clean, quiet, good breakfast and value for money. The toiletries provided are below expectations compare to a modern hotel.
The payment was a little confuse as the first night was charged with credit card but not the second night. I have yet to find out the reasons.
- HIDEKI (10/5): Quiet lakeside property with lake views - This quiet lakeside property offers beautiful views of Lake Toya but is away from the large tourist hotels with their crowds of tourists.
- Eric (8/5): - Old
- Sheng Wen (8/5): -
- Tina (8/5): - Slightly run down, but still functional. Great views across Lake Toya
- Mark (8/5): Beautiful location and an authentic feeling to the whole experience. - A fabulous view looking out over the lake. We were charmed by the traditional room furnishings and the outdoor Onsen. The restaurant wasn't open to guests, which was a pity.
- John (9/5): I enjoyed it’s convenience - Very well Location and new
- Bobby (7/5): Good -
- Sam (6/5): - It’s hard to leave a negative review as the staff were all so friendly and helpful. “You get used to the smell” was our motto as you do slowly go nose blind to the overwhelming smell of stale old cigarettes. (You are still allowed to smoke in your room here) We may also all have splinal damage from sleeping on the floor in the “Japanese style beds” This whole town has a bit of a post apocalyptic feel when we visited in the winter as it’s quite run down. If you’re on a budget though it’s a good option if you have a car and don’t want to pay the crazy lodging prices at the nearby resorts.
- Root (10/5): -
- Rong (8/5): Very good -
- Gang (5/5): Passable -
- Angeline (6/5): Pleasant - You can watch the nightly fireworks from the front of the hotel. It’s an old hotel.
- Eloi (7/5): Good - The Japanese style room was really nice and comfortable and the staff was very friendly The breakfast wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Nathalie (3/5): Poor - The hotel is well located. The room is a really nice Japanese style room with a nice view on the lake.
Breakfast was really nice and the woman in charge of it was really nice and helpful. The horrible smell of cigarette in the room. Such a shame for a family room with children. Impossible to have another room. All our staffs smelled the cigarette after our stay there!
- Nico (7/5): Good -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Tammy (8/5): - people are caring and nice even though with limit english
- Andy (8/5): - Nice onsen and By the lake, 10 mins walk from bus terminal to hotel.
- klgirl (8/5): Fantastic View of Lake Toya - We booked the Japanese style room with a fantastic view of Lake Toya. Room size is big (for Japanese standard). It even has a sitting area for you to enjoy the view of the lake. The amenities is a bit outdated but all in good working condition.
Within walking distance to the Mt. Uzu Memorial Park. You are also able to see the night fireworks from our window. The onsite onsen has indoor and outdoor. We tried that it was was good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The receptionist can't speak much English and is not very friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- kies1987 (8/5): A bit old but made up by great staff and food - The hotel is a bit old and located away from the shops. The cleanliness is average as well. However the price, staffs and food made up for it. In addition, it is possible to see the fireworks on lake toya from your room. Lastly, the staffs are friendly and knowledgeable as well. Take note- onsen is charged separately.
- Lin (8/5): - spacious room, helpful and nice staff, great view from room, good location with easy parking.
- Sarah (8/5): Comfortable stay - Stayed at the 4-pax tatami room for a night. View from the room was fantastic and the tatamis/yukatas provided were comfortable. Dinner was good except that we thought it would be in-room dining - the meals are served at the lobby restaurant. Onsen was ok, they have an open-air bath with the indoor one. The nightly fireworks is visible from the room, but as it moves westward it goes out of sight pretty quickly. Best to just head down for a nicer view.
- Jack (10/5): - A bit dated, but beautiful spot and area. Lots of things to do. Kid friendly with a playground near by. Friendly staff and nice Onsen.
- DO HYUNG GEOR (6/5): Good view but feel a bit hot in the room - Location near the lake, good view but a little hot inside, air-conditioning not working properly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- jerefra72 (8/5): Japanese room with dining includes and fantastic views of the lake - Great location, comfortable (yet a bit outdated) Japanese rooms. But the main attraction point is the view from the rooms: simply outstanding...
On the flip side, the water in semi bathtub is super duper hot, skin burning level type of hot and can't be adjusted. It might be appreciated in the water to have a super hot bath, not so in the Spring...
But, overall, very nice stay with a very nice dinner set and most importantly, an extraordinary view on a clear day.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Everything good except breakfast - Everything was good except breakfast
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Location was pretty far from the town, further than it appeared and you would expected from map. If you adopt public transportation and walking in winter, good luck… The hotel itself in general was very dated(not in a charming way). Staff cold and rigid minded, did not feel welcomed at all. Communication in English was near impossible. Onsen from vocano was very hot which I preferred, but the facilities were way too old and outdoor bath and sunna would close at 10pm which was quite early comparing to other onsen hotels. Lights in the hall way and staircases were completed turned off after 10 or 11pm… I know conservation is a virtue, but at a hotel, seriously?
If the price was half as tagged I probably would consider give a 3 star, but for what it costed, it was far from acceptable…
- Cindy (8/5): - Everything was good except the futon was too hard to sleep on. Too thin and feels like sleeping on hard ground.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lake toya view, dated hotel. - Hotel is old and dated but the lake view compensated for it.
Onsen is old has natural spring water but is murky.
Check the timing of the fireworks at the promenade.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good view, Lake side, cheap price - Very good choice if you have limited budget. Price is more affordable comparing to other hotels
Dinner is delicious. There is free bicycle for guests but only 2 bikes available.
Staff rarely speak English but they are helpful. Necessary details are provided in English. That s not a big problem.
Try to avoid smoking room if you are sensitive to smoking smell. It's too smelly. (There is no non smoking choice for me at that time)
- Sin Sze (8/5): - Good spot to view the fireworks at night, but the meals(dinner and breakfast) could be skipped.
- Jason (8/5): Wonderful view of Lake Toya - We drove a rented car around Hokkaido, and like most regions outside Sapporo, there are ample free parking lots right in front of Toyako Onsen Hokkai Hotel.
The hotel is a little old, but it has a lift serving all floors. The room and toilet were clean, and we had an awesome view facing into Lake Toya. Between the hotel and the lake was a long pavement when we saw many locals take a stroll or jog.
The futons were already prepared when we checked in.
We experienced the fireworks happening right at Lake Toya by our windows. We were told it took place every night during this period.
- Ji (10/5): Nice hotel with great view of lake - The receptionist are very helpful on our requests on taxi arrangement, dining restaurant suggestions and prepare the room ready for our sleep
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice view from hotel. - Nice view from hotel. In the evening you could see the fire works display.
- mays393 (8/5): A room with an amazing view! - We had a Japanese style room facing an amazing view of Lake Toya. The room was spacious and futon beds were surprisingly very comfortable. And above all, the staffs were super nice and helpful.
The only down side was the “super thin wall” between rooms. We could hear everything (except whispers, of course) from the room next door.
- CHWEE LENG (10/5): Great Service, Great View - The room with Lake View was awesome. Woke up to picture perfect view on the last day. The check in was fast, service was good, and the room spacious for 3 pax. The onsen was also very good. Breakfast was acceptable but not great as the food is not hot. They also recommends great restaurants for guests to go to.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel is just oh the shore of Lake Toya, very traditional Japanese style onsen (hot spring) hotel. It is located around 10 mins walk from the bus terminal, the pavements on the way aren't very smooth, beware if you have a luggage.
Its onsen is very nice with an indoor bath and a lovely outdoor bath.
They also provide Japanese style buffet breakfast, which is pretty good.
The only downside of the hotel is the is has a slight smell of cigarette everywhere, probably won't be too comfortable for those who don't like it.
- Lyna0976 (8/5): Beautiful View, Quite Far from Bus Station - We chose this hotel since it’s in the affordable price range around Lake Toya area. We stayed for one night during our trip to Sapporo. How lucky we were to be able to get a room with lake view.. It was Beautiful 😍 I fell in love with the beauty of the autumn folliage around the Lake.. and the serenity of the Lake itself. One downside though it’s quite far from the bus station.. we had to drag our luggages for 15 minutes to the station. Onsen was great, nobody was there when I got into the onsen, probably because it’s 10 pm at night. 😅 overall, quite nice eventhough it’s quite far from the happening place and the firework.
- Anna (8/5): Lake Toya Trip - The area is wonderful and it makes a stay in any hotel so much better, you can spend a month in Lake Toya and it won't be enough. Now, about the hotel, it is very dated. They keep it fairly clean, although bathrooms are so old, they can't be cleaned any better. The room is huge we had Japanese style that's good for 4 tatami mats. The onsen is even more dated and worn out, yet for all of you Japanese bath lovers, it's an onsen with a small outside and big inside bath, the sauna is super hot. The breakfast was very unexciting, small selection and nothing was fresh, probably the worst breakfast we had during 10 days in Japan. The staff is nice like most Japanese, but very limited English.
I would most likely stay somewhere else, they have dozens of hotels in this area, but only a few listed on Hotels.com.
- snowapple (8/5): Not bad - Hokkai hotel is situated at one end with the Toyako-onsen area. It is one of the hotel with a more affordable price range. Pick a lake view room for a beautiful view. Buffet breakfast is not bad. We didnt use the onsen on site so couldn't commend much.
- christinaf695 (10/5): Amazing lake views in a spacious Japanese-style room - Staying in this hotel was the highlight of our Hokkaido road trip. We loved the spacious, Japanese style room with amazing views out on Lake Toya. The location was perfect as you can start one of the hiking/biking trails nearby or drive to the mount Usu rope way within 20 minutes. The outdoor onsen was very enjoyable - so peaceful and quiet with views to Lake Toya. The hotel also has a little shop downstairs with snack food and drinks. We would definitely come back and regret not staying longer.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Local ryokan - Quite local ryokan which the receptionist not really speak English but they are still quite helpful. Onsen area is old. Abit pricey tho. The rest are ok
- Awa-mori (8/5): Great location, value for money, especially if you are traveling with kids - Excellent location at one end of Lake Toya; contrary to expectations and some reviews, we found this a good thing as it is away from main hotels and the crowd yet bang opposite the lake. Our room had lake view and from what we saw all rooms come with lake view- the view is fantastic! Room itself is Japanese style (Ryokan) but very neat and tidy. Great advantage of having toilet and bath in the room, especially if you have children. From hotel lobby you climb down a few steps to enter the lakeside park- the stretch of land all along the rim of the lake which has beautiful greenery, benches, etc. Fireworks that begin at 8:45 pm were a big attraction for us. This hotel is not ideal if you plan to view from hotel room. But walk for 5 mins into the lakeside park and you get great view anyway. We did not opt for breakfast or dinner so have no comments other than saying breakfast smelled good in the lobby :-) Overall we would recommend this over and above the big hotels in the area and better than other Ryokans due to the facility of toilets + bath in the room.
- corliss82 (8/5): Nice view, nice food but abit old - Stayed 2 nights during our winter holiday. This hotel is abit old, but they have nice view of Lake Toya. The onsen is clean but abit run down. Nice traditional set breakfast and dinner. Good location as it's near to Lake Toya, restaurant and petrol station.
- Chee Seng (8/5): Good overall experience - Service by manager is excellent. Food is average. Location for viewing fireworks is not so excellent as hotel is located to extreme left of lake. But can walk to view fireworks
