Guest Reviews
- Erica (9/5): - Food was beyond amazing and 100% worth the price.
- Dominguez (10/5): -
- SHIGKI (8/5): -
- Fahad (9/5): - Location and facilities are amazing Check out time and check in time
- jeanpierre (8/5): -

- Isaac (10/5): Luxury onsen experience with private bath and top-notch kaiseki dinner - The view from the room, the private onsen in the room facing the river, the modern facilities and amenities of the room, the facilities of the hotel, courteous staff, he kaiseki dinner. I paid extra for the luxury and everything was beyond expectation There was only one small glitch in the otherwise excellent service: when I arrived to check-in the staff was trying to get someone who could communicate with me in English. They didn't explain that and I had to wait more than 30 minutes before I had to ask what's going on. Meanwhile, guests who arrived later than I were being attended before me. In the end the lady who attended to my check-in spoke to me mainly in Japanese anyway

- Ferric (9/5): Superb -
- Lai (5/5): The porters r helpful. - They never change the menu. We had the same food for breakfast n dinner. Cleanliness
- Frantz (10/5): An authentic, tourist-free and reasonably priced onsen with great food and top notch service. - Food was excellent, baths were clean, hot, and had a pretty view. Amenities were stocked, and the staff went the extra mile. Nothing
(9/5): Superb - Good location, beautiful onsen view, and delicious foods~! Staff are nice and friendly. You should experience this hotel.

- Mark (10/5): Our 3 day stay was wonderful and met all our high expectations. The staff could not have been more helpful, superb locat - The outdoor baths or rotenburos right next to the river were wonderful. We were given the room exactly as expected, very satisfying stay!
- Lwinthein (10/5): mountain view with clean comfy spaceful traditional tatami room - Spacious Room, Delicious food , Open-air sauna with view.
it was giving all its best for the value. Can't even believe we got this with such a good deal. some of the foreign front-staffs are not providing very polite service to non-japanese guests(could be just my case), make me feel unmatching with the place's vibe and value. With this peaceful and traditional atmosphere, we are expecting the Japan's politeness at its best. Hope they can treat customers with more politeness in the future.
- Alfie (10/5): Very friendly staff and comfortable stay - Good location and abundant facilities Nothing
- Natalja (10/5): It was great! I’m grateful that we were able to go on this trip :-) - It’s an old, well maintained property. You can hear the river outside. It’s very beautiful!
- Zulhilmi (10/5): Lovely boutique ryokan experience - - Serene and less touristy area for ryokan.
- Endless streams of local food and dishes to try on, focusing on gunma's specialty
- Very helpful staff even with language difficulties - Private ryokan is under renovation but not mentioned during the booking process
- We struggled to have important conversations on how to travel in/out
- Y (7/5): Good - Onzen which is next to the river is so nice. Dinner/ food is just ok.
- Nabila (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (1/5): Bad - Nothing I wanted to cancel the booking without penalty but was too late.
- Zur (9/5): Amazing Japanese experience, great food beautiful open bath onsen to the sound of the Shima river - Stay for four nights not disappointed at all. It was around January. Everything is Snow White magical atmosphere the hotel is located in a small town. There are nearby restaurants. I took the full course so I had breakfast and dinner every day. The food is amazing Japanese traditional style I took the Japanese style room. It was comfortable and spacious. Really nice view of the river sitting in a cozy room enjoying my green tea was an amazing experience. The open bath was great. There are two open baths and they change around the evening. It is just amazing to sit outside. It's snowing listening to the river water this is why I booked this hotel, it met made my expectation on highly addressed renting a car because of the remote area
- Florencia (9/5): Superb - Onsen and views
- Warunee (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (10/5): Wonderful - Baths were lovely. View was lovely in the snow. Easy bus access from Tokyo
- Stamena (9/5): Superb - Great view from my spacious room onto the waterfall ( l love the noise of the water, but it is not for everyone especially during the night), the onsen was beautiful with night illumination onto the forest, dinner and breakfast was delicious Nothing
- Danny (7/5): Good alternative to visit, if you want to see spirit away motivated ryokan. - Private onsen in the room was great. Food was not so great. We ate dinner and breakfast and both were course meals, but the taste was not so great compared to different ryokan.
- Toshiko (6/5): Overall it was fine - Onsen was good I really enjoyed. More space needed to put cosmetic things.
- Jim (9/5): Superb -
- Jeanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johanna (10/5): Amazing stay, great memories :) - The whole place is beautifully made up. Traditional furniture and decoration, presented in a very clean and decent way. The atmosphere is super peaceful and we found the place to be spotless. The dinner and breakfast were Teishoku sets and absolutely delicious and filling, while satisfying all flavours. The outdoor baths where absolutely stunning, right next to the river and with view of the forest behind. The futons where really cozy and comfortable and the Yukatas provided where comfi as well. The Japanese style room is equipped with hot water for tea, two low tables and one with high chairs and while we had dinner staff prepared the futons for us. We will keep this amazing stay in mind for a long time! :) The english level of the staff could be better but it was sufficient to understand everything and get the important information :)
- Laura (9/5): Amazing staff and peaceful setting - The onsen was amazing and the highlight of our stay. The staff were so friendly and helpful. They really made an effort to accommodate us even though we do not speak Japanese. The river next to the hotel makes it so relaxing and peaceful. The hotel provided instructions for us on how to use the onsen, as it was our first time. The pillows were not very comfortable.
- Varga (10/5): Exceptional - The reception is very kind and helpful. Felt very homey right after entering. The baths are amazing, managed to try all 3 baths.
Will come back in the future for sure!
- Raman (10/5): Awesome. - Nice open onsen baths, awesome river, beautiful nature, good rooms.
- Amber (8/5): Our stay was enjoyable and very relaxing overall. The sound of the river flowing was wonderful. - I liked the onsen on both levels 2 and 7. They were large, clean, and private. The temperature was excellent and the facilities were sufficient. I felt that the lights were too bright in the dining hall for patrons in the 'less expensive' rooms making us feel of secondary value to the hotel. I didn't like that we had to walk through the more pleasantly-lit dining room to access the brightly lit dining room.
- Hill (9/5): Relaxing getaway from the city to a riverside paradise. - The food was really good and the meals were large, so worth the price. The room was beautiful and clean, and staff were kind and helpful. The bath locations and temperature had variation, to meet all kinds of needs. Location itself was beautiful as well and the locals were friendly, definitely recommend walking around. There is a small town, dam, and a beautiful lake upstream of the river as well as a couple small shrines along the way. As a foreigner I wish the bathing process and the food was initially explained a little better to me, but I figured it out pretty quickly. Regardless the staff were patient and kind with me despite the language barrier.
As a side note, there are lots of dragonflies and other insects around the property being that it is right next a river. Personally, they never bothered me but if you don't like insects, don't go outside of the cities in Japan!
- Gitta (8/5): Relaxing retro stay - I like the atmosphere. Totally retro place. 70ties style. After some days the meals repeated themselves
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ka (10/5): Exceptional - Tranquil, beautiful setup with Indoor and outdoor onsens. Bus stop right opposite the hotel takes you back to the train station. Would definitely recommend Breakfast and dinner could be better, but already good enough for the price
- Dmitrii (7/5): Good -
- Simon_loh (9/5): Very nice and affordable riverside ryokan - Room is extremely spacious, with a toilet, bathroom and wash basin at a separate corner. There's a big fridge and electric airpot. Lightings are adequate, and just enough power sockets to use. Wi-Fi connection is good. Its hot spring is big, with some outdoor ones facing the river, very relax to dip inside, enjoying the river view and listening to its water gushing sound. Meals are in the form of multi-course dishes, served at a common dining area. Very satisfied with all the dishes. All staff are generally courteous. It's actually not that far to walk to the central town area. The bus stop is located right outside of the ryokan, together with a convenience and liquor store which opens till 9pm. Check-out is until 11am which is great. Though we stayed on a high floor, the view is not that good, with a balcony ledge that blocks the river view, and an instruction stating not to go out onto it. Toilet space is very tight.
- Jarintip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Takiko (10/5): Exceptional - Traditional Japanese Breakfast, I enjoyed it. N/A
- Artem (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tan (9/5): Value for money, highly recommended 👍 - Someone waiting for your arrival at the entrance.Very welcoming and good service. Dinner and breakfast are good too. Not at the moment.
- Gabriel (9/5): Superb -
- Tabea (10/5): Relaxing quite place with wonderful view - The Onsen with the river view is really fantastic. Rooms also have riverview and are quite large. We had kaiseki meal for dinner and breakfast and it was great to try all these diffrent things and be neither to full nor hungry afterwards. Very beautiful landscape. I went with my japanese Partner, who also enjoyed it very much.
The Hotel employees knew that a foreigner would come and had someone who spoke english (which was not necessary since my partner Steaks japanese but I appriate the effort). The buses come only once in a few hours on a monday which was very inconvient. But the location is in the midfle of the mountains so that's catch.
It might be little difficult to get there with no japanese. So people should keep this in mind and plan in advance.
- Riley (10/5): A dreamlike retreat in the mountains - The location was gorgeous, both the ryokan and the surrounding areas. There's a luxurious main lounge with small shops and restaurants that almost seem like you're wandering through a tiny town. There are multiple public onsen with views of the river that seemed close enough to touch. The room itself was quite spacious with a nice river view, a kotatsu, complementary tea and an electric kettle, a private toilet and shower, and more. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both delicious. Also, the proprietress did an entertaining picture show performance of The Mermaid and the Red Candles.
- Colin (9/5): Great service beautiful Ryokan Hotel - Calm location right next to river. Onsens were beautiful. Grear services all round. Some English staff and bit of Google Translate means everything sorted very easily. Food may betailored to local Japanese. While nicely presented and they did vary menu if you staymore than one night, we found thefood to be somewhat salty and bland. Quality of food was excellant though, just the taste.
- Nick (10/5): Cozy, comfortable, secluded, relaxing. - The setting is stunning - views out the lobby window are like a painting and the sound of running water will put you to sleep. The food was amazing as well. Generous, multi-course meals for every meal. Both Onsen are great, but the outdoor pools are particularly excellent. And it’s close to Sekizenkan so you can go for a walk to get your Spirited Away snapshot, but I’d rather stay here. Nothing - it was great.
(10/5): Exceptional - Location is great
- Tran (9/5): Superb -
- Timothy (7/5): Solid Ryokan to relax at - The riverside onsen was amazing. Staff were very welcoming and accommodating. Story time with the land lady was fun. Spacious room, comfortable futon. Kotatsu in the room was also nice. Was my first Ryokan experience, and I was satisfied. The wifi was pretty slow, TV in the room is probably over 10 years old. Food was good, but not to my taste.
- Adella (10/5): Exceptional - the onsen. Oh my god, imagine enjoying outdoor onsen just beside the river!!!! With snow falling too… best onsen experience ive ever had.
- Natasha (9/5): Very enjoyable - Great service
Gatutsu Little old but comfy
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - A traditional onsen resort in the cutest little town. We stayed as a group of 6 in 2 rooms. Food was very traditional Japanese and was always set menu. There was so much no one went hungry even if they were picky. The onsens were beautiful with open air sections on to the river. It was all beautiful
- Sally (10/5): Treat yourself to luxury in a gorgeous town - We loved everything about our stay here. The room, meals, onsen, staff, facilities and location were excellent. I wish we could have stayed there longer. There were no issues.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional - Staff was really eager to help and show us around
- Sari (8/5): Very good -
- Stella (10/5): Beatiful riverside hotel with its own charm. - Beautiful property next to the river with a small waterfall. Onsen overlooks the river. The female owner takes a lot of pride in decorating the hotel and read story at night to the guests. I have no idea what the story is about but I enjoy listening to her pouring out her heart telling the story. The traditional breakfast and dinner were delicious. I highly recommend this hotel. None.
