Guest Reviews
- globaltraveltheworld (4/5): Horrible experience - don’t even think about it - First time here and we aren’t coming back. Staff is disengaged - no pleasant greetings and no friendless it’s clear they are just going through the motions. I had a horrible experience in the spa. Massage therapist clearly was not trained and her version of a spa was grinding against the bones of your back and neck. She also forgot just decided not to do any upper leg massage on the backs of my legs. Wiped my feet with a wet towel before finishing but not the soles, while is the whole point so you don’t slip. Massage room also had a loud vent near your head on the massage table so it was like your massage next to a vacuum cleaner. No apologies or asking if they could do anything when I do them the massage had been less than pleasant. They just states their price and said that standard gratuity was a 20% tip would be automatically added to my bill. Dinner at Sisters was equally disappointing. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits which was a pile of mushy glop with raisin stuff cornbread. A fried egg on top of breaded shrio and mounds of cheese piled on that. Weird and nothing like what was described on the menu (which also said it had andouille sausage - which was never seen in what came to the table).
- P660HDjoshm (2/5): Horrible Management/Customer Service/Communication - I rarely leave negative reviews, as I want to share positive experiences for businesses instead of bad. I booked a night for new years and had to cancel due to a family health issue, the staff would not let me just cancel as it was within the no cancel window. I get that, they offered me the opportunity to rebook before April. I responded to the email with a date of March 7th as a possible rebook. Silence in the response from the Hotel. Fast forward to March 6th and I get an email from the Hotel with check in directions. I email back saying I am caught off guard by this because I had never received confirmation of a rebook. 8:30pm I finally get a call from the Hotel. Mind you I sent the email at 10:30am. In the email I sent the screen shot of the original email with the cliff hanger of no response. I was assured that they had called me twice. They had not. I was originally told that they had rebooked me on the 26th, when I hadn't even sent the rebook date until the 28th. No phone calls during the time frame and the excuse was the email probably went to my spam, even though their other emails came to my main email. Resolution was to cancel my stay, which was for a night, the cost of $325, and the opportunity to have that as a credit for the next year. The communication from the Hotel to the customer is beyond lacking and cost me for their inability to respond to emails in a timely manner. It was apparently my fault I hadn't checked my spam folder, called the hotel to follow up on if they had actually rebooked me and I was flat out lied to when they started trying to tell me about the phone calls they had made. As a fairly well versed traveler in the US and abroad this is the worst experience I have ever had with an establishment I havent set foot in. I would recommend looking at the areas other offerings, such as VRBOs
- 759juliannel (10/5): Awesome wedding venue and accommodations! - Wedding. Beautiful suites Reasonable rates Beautiful ballroom We hosted the rehearsal dinner and bridesmaid luncheon Shelby was absolutely amazing and worked so hard-she does need more help tho
It was a fantastic weekend and I would recommend Martha Washington to all for a venue or get away weekend!
- paulaP110PV (2/5): Terrible Experience over Thanksgiving; Would rate a ZERO if possible - We spent over$1500 over the Thanksgiving weekend on a suite at the Martha. The heat in the rooms (bedroom and sitting area) did not work. When the staff gave us space heaters, they blew the circuit breakers.
We kept the staff apprised of the situation. When we checked out, we were told we would get a credit on our bill. We received no credit.
Since then, we have sent several emails and left messages for the management to contact us. NO ONE HAS RETURNED OUR CALLS!!!! We are now 3 full weeks from the end of our stay and NOTHING in response from the management.
We love the Abingdon area and will visit again but there is no way you should stay at the Martha!
- Happiness25961221466 (8/5): Not what I expected - It was a family trip and we were expected much more from this hotel. Unfortunately service is not as good as we were expecting and especially in the restaurant.
- teknoge3k (8/5): Good hotel but no real breakfast option. - We stay at The Martha each year and love staying there. The one draw for us is the hot tub. We love relaxing in the outdoor hot tub each night when we get back to the hotel. The rooms are nice and spacious, the staff is super friendly. The hotel is also very clean. You can tell it's historic. My biggest complaint is the breakfast, or lack of. Your only option for breakfast in the hotel is an omelet, a croissant, or scrambled eggs. Neither my wife nor myself like croissants or omelets, so we were pretty limited on our breakfast options. It also comes with yogurt which is... meh. So if you're used to hotels with decent breakfast options or even continental breakfast options, you may want to skip the breakfast that the hotel offers and go to a restaurant in town for breakfast. If the restaurant at the resort would give people options, I would give it 5 stars. Even if it were simple options such as bacon, biscuits, gravy, etc each day. The set menu with a single option is a major flaw I think they have.
- U3111OEhelenh (10/5): Very good - My family of eight had dinner at Sisters at the Martha’s on Friday evening. We had a semi private room in the dining room. Our drinks and dinner were all delicious!
Marissa, our waitress, was awesome. Would definitely go there again!
- rickyc575 (10/5): - Had dinner and drinks at their bar and our bartender, Nikita, was the most knowledgeable bar keep we have had in the south. We asked if she was from Russia and she said Nyet....Suspicious but ok... She made us everything we asked and the drinks were perfect. A very warm, outgoing, funny, and professional attitude. We will certainly be returning and requesting Nikita to take care of us.
- Escape39319426955 (10/5): Exceptional service and amenities! - We have been visiting The Martha for years and are so impressed with the upkeep. We love that we can drive up and leave the world behind. There’s no need to get back in the car until we leave - everything is at our finger tips, from three meals services (lunch service is new) to a fitness center, spa, indoor pool, boutique, outdoor (amazing) jacuzzi, putt putt, pickleball - not to mention many other food options, shopping, the creeper trail, and the Barter Theatre within walking distance. The management is exceptional as well, and will do all they can to ensure a great stay!
- Voyage00856199249 (10/5): Hidden gem! - Really cool place! Very welcoming and a great and friendly staff. Reasonable pricing decent food. Abingdon is a neat older town the retained a lot of charm. Facilties are pretty nice at the Martha with a decent gym, pool and Jacuzzi. Definitely worth a visit!
- K4253JKnatalieb (2/5): Disappointing customer service - Horrible customer service. Horrible communication.
I accidentally left my corporate card in my room and was promised it would be mailed out the next day and the tracking number be emailed to me, I even left my personal credit card information to pay for the shipping.
Since my job depends on being able to access this corporate account, it was important that this was time-sensitive matter. I left an email, left a voicemail, and called the property 5 different times. I was given the run-around, no one had answers for me, and no one apologized.
I had to call back the 6th time to talk to the Bellman Manager. He finally went to UPS and they had never sent the package. This was 7 days later.
I work in sales and hospitality and this was such a disappointment and a detriment to my job. I ended up paying the shipping fee myself since no one at the property offered to cover the cost for the hassles of the situation.
After paying over $350 for the one night stay, the customer service was lacking to say the least.
-I found out the sauna was out of order after the front desk staff told me it was an available amenity.
- davejS8951VK (8/5): Overall good, not so great room - Overall, the hotel is very nice. The gym was excellent, and the breakfast was good. I had room 211, and it was not particularly inviting. In the two beds, you could see the box springs, and the furniture was spartan. I cannot figure out why they chose a pedestal sink, but you will have no room for toiletries. My friend's room was much nicer. I would suggest requesting a room in the older section.
- neildB1772DB (2/5): A major disappointment! - A stay last year was canceled by the hotel due to their own plumbing problem. The stay this year was unable to occur because of the hotel failed to return my multiple calls. I do not believe that this is a reliable nor dependable property. I would not advise wasting my time at the Martha.
- MarvinL517 (10/5): Wonderful Holiday at The Martha - We had a Wonderful Stay from December 26 to 28, our fifth time here. The staff was very courteous, warm, friendly, and helpful.
Our Room at the Governor's Suite was perfect. The fireplaces were lit, and we felt we were living or staying during another Era of the Century.
Special thanks for our arrival, Brook at the Front Desk, very helpful and Warm.
Tonya the Geuests Services Manager, is incredibly knowledgeable about the Inn and the Town of Abingdon.
The Sisters Restaurant was amazing. Our Server, Nikita, was very detailed, warm, and knowledgeable, and the Manager, Willie, was so gracious and helpful.
We will be back next year.

- pattipS612NY (8/5): Plastic glasses - My main complaint is that the room had plastic glasses and only 2 , certainly this lovely in. Could afford real glasses. . Also the only coffee available was , for us, a walk down a hall, and down a flight of stairs which was quite a hike for early risers in our pjs. The room was lovely.
- laurierU2471PK (4/5): Bring lots and lots of money; lower your expectations - What an overpriced mediocre hotel. My friend and I booked a double for about $380 total per night, way above my price point but I went along my friend's wishes. The location is right across the street from Barter Theatre, very convenient, but NOT worth the money. Upgrading is needed; there was peeling paint on the elevator ceiling. Our room was ok, but the glassware was wrapped plastic cups. PUHLEEZ-for THAT money??? Nice shower and linens, no tub. The breakfast was inferior to anything I've had at Comfort Inns or Holiday Express's. NO fresh fruit, a lame small muffin/sweetened yoghurt combo, over-cooked eggs and one sausage and one bacon slice served up on a cold plate. Serve-yourself coffee. To add insult to injury, the "server," whose sole efforts were bringing us the miserable entree, came by at the end of the "meal" to have us record a tip for him on our room charges. Gauche, uncouth, and unearned. To add to the class and graciousness of this pit, there was was a note on the hotel's TV channel informing us that if we brought our own drinks out onto the veranda we would be charged $15 per drink. Lesson I've learned: read other reviews, do homework and don't go along with something just because someone wants to.
- jweAVL (8/5): Our second and not last trip to The Martha - This was our second trip to "The Martha", combining our stay with a show at The Barter Theater and dinner at The Tavern. It was as good a we remembered. We planned this trip before Tropical Storm Helene hit and devastated much of western North Carolina where we live, so this was a very welcome respite. The setting is lovely, the staff is friendly, and the room spacious. There is information on what the hotel has to offer on the TV in the room, but I was surprised to not also find some kind of information book in the room to review and also a layout of the property as there are many levels to the Inn. I took advantage of the great indoor pool and outdoor hot tub, and we enjoyed a lovely, included/complimentary breakfast the following morning. The Barter Theater is just across the street, so very convenient and the restaurant where we dined just a short walk down the street. The only issue we had is that after returning home a charge showed up on our credit card statement from the Inn we didn't recognize. I called and found this was a charge from the in-house restaurant Sisters. I noted we had not charged anything to our room from the restaurant and only went there for the breakfast and I left a cash tip. The front desk person said this would have to be resolved by the restaurant and there was nothing she could do. She would inform the restaurant. I was advised to wait a week and if the issue was not resolved to call the restaurant. We will wait and see but I was surprised this could not be resolved quickly. We shall see.
- teknoge3k (6/5): Good place in Abingdon! - This is a nice hotel in Abingdon that's convenient to walk to the Barter Theater, and a few local restaurants in Abingdon. My review was borderline between a 3* and a 4* but I cannot give it a 4* because of the housekeeping. I had to go to the front desk twice to request extra towels and soap. Housekeeping just doesn't show up unless requested. I can understand if they are short staffed or super busy, but TWICE I saw a housekeeping girl just leaning against a wall on her phone. I think her phone was more important than the guests' needs.
The Sisters Restaurant on-site provides free breakfast for guests. However it's a set breakfast so you have no options, only what they offer for the day. The service is super, super slow in there as well. The food itself was good though and the service was friendly, just slow.
The hotel does have a 24/7 pool and hot tub. However the pool is enclosed, and there are no lights other than the lights in the pool so it's very dark. I tried every light switch and nothing turned on the lights in the pool area.
We arrived about 45 minutes early (3:15) and they adhere strictly to the 4pm check-in time, unlike other hotels. So at 4pm, there's a ton of people checking in and you will have to wait. Most hotels allow you to check in early as long as the room is ready. This was odd.
We will return to the Martha next year to see if things are any better for check-in, and the housekeeping. Hopefully it is, so we can return again. Otherwise, we'll seek another hotel in the area.
- elizabethmH1939GV (10/5): Step back into history with this classy, well-maintained hotel with LOTS of amenities. - The Martha Washington Inn is a gem. Situated centrally in the lovely old
town of Abingdon, VA, with lots of things to do. We enjoyed walki with rockingng around, amazed at the architecture as well as the cute shops and the delicious restaurants. We had dinner at The Tavern the first night. It was originally the towns overnight inn and tavern for stagecoach travellers. Having many other "lives", it serves a fabau;ous restaurant now. I had the fresh North Carolina trout. Breakfast next day was at the Martha, where we stayed for 3 nights. What a joy and great find this is! Reasonably priced and includes a wonderful, healthy and hearty breakfast, and a free cordial of port after dinner on the front porch with wicker rocking chairs and sofas. Second night we ate dinner at the Inn and used our $25 off coupon towards our meal!! Can you believe that? The indoor pool has a retrablel sunroof and unique designed two-layered hot tub with falls from the top level to the lower one. We highly recommend this Inn for all 4 seasons. We were here from Richmond for grandson's Little League tournament!
- RandyF528 (6/5): The grand lady has fallen. - Having stayed at the Martha several times in years past, I had fond memories of the hotel.
Alas, they seem to have changed a lot and not in a good way.
Breakfast was formerly a fabulous affair, ordering from a menu and the number one item was the world famous cheese grits. No more. Now it’s this is what we have. Take it or leave it.
The room was hot. Staying in the 300 suite, the most expensive suite, the thermostat would only turn to 68 but the room temp never got below 73 and during the night would go up to 75. As a fan of cold sleeping, this was concerning. I did bring it to management’s attention, and they seemed to be concerned but nothing could be done. It was June. It was 90 outside. It’s an old hotel. I understand all that. I just believe their system needs a major update.
Supper at Sisters. The website and literature advised that the dress code was business casual. Not t shirt and gym shorts. Which were abundant. Either enforce it or do away with it. Again, it’s not the fabulous hotel of yore.
Interior is a bit dingy and shabby. Minor compared to the rest.
The bell men were efficient and helpful. Rachel at Sisters was an excellent server.
The shower has issues with water only coming out of the handheld wand and not the shower head. A small thing. But still…
Sadly, unless a major overhaul is done, we will not return.
- S1105QNmarks (10/5): Historically significant Hotel/Inn - I believe this was my 7th stay at the M Washington. I really love the place, location and staff. However, I have to give it a very “weak” five star for this visit. I didn’t get my requested room ( reservation made in early Feb.) said the bathroom floor was getting repaired. The steam rooms were being replaced and the putt putt course was closed due to scaffolding for work on windows and some quaint outdoor hallways were also closed due some sort of water issue/repair. That said the pool, hot tub, and courts were all open. The staff were great. Hopefully, they will get the construction completed ASAP.
- shabaron (10/5): Beautiful historic hotel and a jewel of a town - The property is stunning and dates back from the 1700’s. There are reports of hauntings there which makes the trip extra fun. A wonderful employee Anthony who man’s the desk overnight gave my sister and me an after hours tour of the spectacular ball room and filled us in on interesting history of the house. The pool is also amazing here.
- MarvinL517 (8/5): The Martha Inn Christmas could do better in communicating requests - We have stayed at the Martha for many years and have always loved the character of the historic property, the service, and the Food and Beverage. This is our sixth visit over the years.
We made reservations before Christmas this year and reserved two nights for the 24th and 25th, 2023.
We also made reservations for The Sister's Dining Room for Christmas Eve on the 24th at 8:00 PM and confirmed with the guest services.
We arrived and checked in to room #402 and were disappointed with the lack of light throughout the room, no headboards on the queen-size bed, the Shower drained very slowly, and the heating had no temperature control. We also had to take two flights of stairs to our room; we were not asked if we had to take stairs. I asked if we could review other rooms and was told no other rooms were available. (I found out later that other rooms were available as the occupancy was 35 %. The front desk at our arrival was not helpful. )
We arrived at Sisters for our 8:00 PM Dinner reservations, and they had no reservations for our 8:00 PM Arrival. Fortunately, the Hostess was able to make room for us, and we had a delightful dinner with a fabulous server named Sarah; she was exceptional, and our menu items, Prime Rib, and Braised Short Ribs, were Fabulous; this was the highlight of our stay, compliments to the Chef.
The rest of our stay was excellent. Breakfast for both days was excellent, and Karen, our server, was delightful, courteous, and very service-oriented.
We will continue to revisit The Marthaust wish we had a choice of another room for our stay.
- tiger9415 (10/5): A very enjoyable experience - I booked a “Barter Theater” package for the weekend as a surprise getaway with my boyfriend. The hotel is lovely and the spa is wonderful! They did a great job making the couple’s experience unforgettable.
My only complaint is the morning server at the restaurant was very unfocused. She was very nice, but she didn’t follow up to make sure we had gotten our breakfast. She made us to-go beverages and wished us off without realizing that we never got our food. I had to ask the manager to check for us.
An overall great experience, but the breakfast service at Sisters could be better (the server at dinner was great!). The rest of the hotel and spa staff were fantastic!
- steelers2512 (10/5): Wonderful stay. - The room was exceptional. It was spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable. Bathrooms were nice. Toilets were amazing. (I know, weird to rave about toilets, but trust me). Check-in was a breeze. Parking was ample and close. Hotel was decorated for Halloween and it was not over the top and tastefully done. Can’t recommend enough.
- angelabD4421DW (4/5): Beautiful old girl falling into disgrace - Beautiful old hotel but poorly run. Not very clean. Our room had a lamp with a shortage; tacky grommet curtains; damaged wall paint; exposed box springs; bugs and cobwebs; near speaker of hot tub so not quiet. I expected a lovely clean, period style room. We were overcharged $500. However after returning home the manager readily took care of this. Our meals were quite good. I love this old hotel and would like to see it receive the care it deserves.
- C662UJnancyp (6/5): Went here years ago and nothing is the same.... - We went here for a walk about and everything has changed from the town itself to the hotel. This place used to be nice and clean but in recent years it has just gotten worse and worse. The mold is out of control and it really bothered my friends allergies. The food is awful. I will give it 3 stars for sentimental value but that is all.
- lwakabr (10/5): Short but sweet - This is a beautiful historic hotel. We arrived very early but since our room was ready, we were able to check in early. The room was beautiful. We explored the hotel and were planning to enjoy the spa and restaurant. While exploring the Town we received a phone call about a serious family emergency and decided we needed to leave right away. The hotel staff was very understanding and comped our room (it was barely used). We were very grateful to them and look forward to returning when we can fully enjoy all they have to offer.
- Bethany (10/5): A wonderful stay - very relaxing - Room was comfortable and quiet. This is a very elegant hotel and felt pampered during our stay.
- Gerald (10/5): - If those walls could talk! So much history in this beautiful hotel. I loved the display of historic artifacts on the walls. It really helps connect the history of the women’s college to the current hotel. We so enjoyed our stay. The pool is wonderful! And, the creaky old floors in the lobby—love them!
- Naomi (10/5): Wonderful stay - Great place with lots of ambiance. Our room with canopy bed was very cool.
- Amanda (10/5): Beautiful hotel! - Beautiful hotel! Staff was friendly, hotel was very clean and absolutely beautiful! We enjoyed our stay very much!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great place to stay. - Loved the place. Also very friendly and accommodating staff!
- jeff (10/5): - Absolutely the best value in a property of this caliber.
- Lisa (10/5): Great place for a trip with friends - This was our second trip to The Martha. We had a group of 4 couples. The facility is very clean. The staff are always asking how they can help. They are very friendly. The owner even took time on several occasions during our stay to visit with us and chat. The dinner was excellent! Breakfast was the standard continental breakfast. We enjoyed the hot tub and our group had a blast playing putt putt. I love the little courtyard outside of the dinning room. It is beautifully decorated and peaceful. If you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground floor room. We worked off our great food walking up and down to get to our room. Parking is very convenient, safe and spacious. The beautiful large front porch is a great place to relax while waiting for friends before walking down the street to enjoy the rest of town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very comfortable bed, tastefully furnished room. semi-private balcony with rocking chairs. Pleasant staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Food was delicious at Sister’s. Enjoyed complimentary port after dinner with the owner. He was delightful, and extended our checkout so we could return to hotel after bike ride on VA Creeper Trail.
We will return to The Martha.
- Camilla (10/5): Lots of atmosphere - Wonderful stay with lost of atmosphere- very nice facilities - we enjoyed both the pool and a mini-golf game. If you have extra time The Virginia Creeper trail is highly recommend as well as dining at the Tavern.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Didn't like having to walk up stairs to get to out room. Stay on 4th floor did not have elevator to 4th floor.
- Lorie (6/5): A little disappointed - This was a special stay us, a mix of business and pleasure. Our room's TV didn't work- the porter tried to fix it but it still malfunctioned. Our room didn't have glasses. You have to get ice from the receptionist. The breakfast was included but was only packaged foods and hard boiled eggs! So disappointing at such a fine hotel. We have more opportunities to go to Abington, but don't know if we will chose the Marth Washington.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cute
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 150 year old resort with a rich history that has a wide variety of offerings for your enjoyment, on and off site. We happened to arrive at a time when there were some unexpected facility issues. The staff was gracious and accommodating in making sure we were able to enjoy our visit to "The Martha".
- Gregory (2/5): - Short staffed. Slow checking in process.
No restaurant service, closed.
No answer calling front desk.
Generally rundown condition. Sad!!
- Priscilla (6/5): Valet the only reason to stay - We had to change rooms due to the mildew smell in the first was awful and affected my allergies. The second room was much better however nothing had been dusted/cleaned. Countertops had crumbs and “rings” from old drinks on them. We had to ask for towels and TP three times. Finally got the towels but had to get our own TP. Love the history of the place but the $ to stay here- it could be much better condition and cleanliness wise. Valet guys were amazing though!
- Gary (10/5): Great, as always - We always enjoy staying here. Especially the pool and hot tub!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Elegant historical decor. Clean and well maintained. Close to the Creep Trail, Barter theatre, and downtown. On site restaurant was very good. Enjoyed the hot tub and the hotel grounds.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great hotel, give it a 4.5, front desk staff needs some training, they were very polite but just said enjoy the facilities, but we didn't know what the facilities were.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice..wonderful staff.
- Breanna (10/5): - The city of Abingdon and The Martha Washington Inn and Spa was absolutely amazing. If you are looking for a place to relax and just enjoy the peacefulness of a "small town" feel, this is definitely the place for you.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a nice stay there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Love the Martha Washington Inn!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved this place—beautiful, historic building that is updated and clean. Wonderful front porch, good service. They made accommodations for our bicycles.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wonderful Dining at Sisters
A great staff overall, hotel, spa and restaurant.
- Lori (8/5): Lovely - Easy and very nice check in. Lovely area for coffee in front of fire place or on the veranda. Gardens were beautiful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Lora (10/5): Lovely stay at an historic hotel - This hotel has a lot of character and history. Built originally in 1832 as a private residence, it has been converted nicely to a hotel. Spa, saltwater pool, Pickle ball and tennis courts along with a miniature golf course. We took advantage of everything. Lovely Abingdon on the trailhead of the Virginia Creeper trail. Would love to stay here again!
- Katie (10/5): - Had a great time! Restaurant was excellent and spa was wonderful. Highly recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel, spa, and Sisters restaurant were all fantastic. The staff really cared about providing top notch service and ensuring we enjoyed our stay and Abingdon. I would go there again in a heartbeat. The grounds were immaculate, with plenty of options for outdoor seating. The putt putt course was a neat touch. We spent plenty of time on the deep front porch with drinks or coffee from Sisters enjoying the view. The spa was a fantastic experience, and the services were high quality.
- Kelli (8/5): - A lovely hotel with lots of history, beautifully maintained. The bathroom and shower were completely updated, and the room was comfortable although an in-room coffee maker would have been great. There were two single serve coffee makers in the lobby, but only one was functional. The electrical outlets in the room were so old that there was only one outlet in the room that we could charge our devices without the chargers popping out. The public areas were very nice. I would have given five stars if I didn't drink coffee or didn't use electronic devices.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We enjoyed this historic hotel. The outside porch and gardens were great.
- Winifred (8/5): The Martha during covid - The place was amazing and historic. We are still dealing with covid, so keep mind that everything is still a little different. It did smell a bit musty, but the room was clean and it was very nice to sit out on the porch in the big rocking chairs during a gentle rain. Miss having coffee hotel rooms. The staff was nice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a beautiful inn with a charming feel. The room had everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Pleasantly surprised.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rich in history. Great place to visit. Restaurant on site is wonderful.
- Wendy (10/5): - The staff was friendly and kind. The property is beautiful with lots of history
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Historic charm with clean modern amenities
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Extremely clean, history-rich place with a great pool, gym, and restaurant. I only wish the restaurant stayed open later than 9PM.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very quaint historical setting. Loved the original sitting room and library. Wonderful outdoor sitting areas
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful Historic Property - Beautiful property, lots to do but unfortunately not all available due to Covid I suppose. Spacious rooms and bathrooms but the beds - ooof. Very uncomfortable. Overall, would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hoping for more attention to detail - People come for the historic aesthetic and although prices continue to go up for staying a night, the property is not in good shape. The wall paper is peeling, the carpet buckling and even the elevator was out of service during my visit. We continue to pay a resort fee although there is nothing during COvid that makes this a resort. Even the in house restaurant had a minimal bar snack menu.
- Terry (10/5): - Very nice beds could have been a little better overall two thumbs up
- Linda (8/5): Love Place to Stay & Visit - Overall, The Martha was as expected - a beautiful 'old' property with lots of history. Nice sized rooms with comfortable beds. Unfortunately, Covid affected our stay, so not really the hotel's fault - room and hotel amenities affected. All this being said, I would definitely stay here again, hopefully during a more 'normal' time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - If you're looking for a town with lovely streets, a hotel with a storied past, rooms that suggest staying at a vintage country estate, and restaurants nearby that offer outside dining, Martha Washington is currently a deal. The staff is paired down, but tries to be helpful--including finding a room on the 4th floor after they missed the email from Expedia "because they didn't look in the right email folder". If you want the Hampton predictability, you'll be disappointed, but if you want a memorable stay in what could be a slightly time-worn great aunt's estate, this will provide that--and you'll be happy you tried it.
- Taren (4/5): - For the price of the room, they offer no fridge, microwave, or coffee pot (which they said they offered). The carpet was discolored with marks all over the walls. They give you 3 pillows for 2 guests. The restaurant is overpriced for portions. I recommend going to the hilton and saving money and staying in a nicer and cleaner establishment.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - beautiful old property with unique public spaces; great restaurant staff
- William (10/5): Excellent 2-night stay - We were very comfortable with the social distancing and cleanliness. Very good restaurant. Friendly staff.
- Michael D (10/5): reat hotel - Amazing old hotel with all the grace and service one would expect
- Shirley (10/5): - Loved the size of the room and upgrade they gave when they saw my husbands disability. Great old charm/
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Full of character. Not the same type of hotel. Nice change. Rooms aren’t close together either so you can’t hear people above you or walking by your room.
- Rhonda (6/5): - When walking by the outside ponds yesterday afternoon ... there was a very large, dead rat laying on the sidewalk. That was not good to find before dinner.
Then trying to put that behind me, we went to dinner thinking we would find a large selection on the menu. It was not a good selection! We ended up eating a $15 hamburger that was cooked too long with burnt bacon on it. Acid Refux cause a very restless night.
Typically, we love staying there. But this may have been our final visit.
- Sherry (8/5): - It is a beautiful inn located in a cute historic town . Everyone was very friendly. The “free breakfast” was a joke, just coffee and soggy muffin. I really would have expected better from such a nice place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Intimate and interesting, service was top notch and restaurant was 5 star!
- CharlesEldridge (10/5): - Lots of history complete with the best and latest amenities!
- KATHY GASKIN (10/5): Wonderful experience at the Martha Washington Inn - The Martha Washington Inn and the Barter Theater was the last leg on our journey and it was by far the place we stayed. Although the inn does not have the amenities of the Greenbriar, the service and accommodations were superior. Bed was very comfortable and room was beautiful. The Sunday morning breakfast was wonderful and the staff was great. Would definitely recommend. In fact, planning to bring family for a visit to the inn and Barter theater.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was great as expected. The smallest details were taken care of without exception.
- Becky (10/5): - The Martha is just steps away from the famous Barter Theater. So very easy for theater and concert goers.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Our room smelled musty and our mattress was uncomfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our stay at the Martha was delightful in every way. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating and friendly and our room was lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Just Perfect - From the moment we arrived in the driveway, we were welcomed by polite staff, check-in was the easiest of any hotel we've ever booked, and the room was clean & comfortable. It's close to several great restaurants & shops, as well as the iconic Barter Theatre. Overall, a perfect experience!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Under staffed during a wedding with breakfast service and running out of a simple item tomato juice and serving Bloody Mary mix without advising guest of this Spicey replacement until drinking.
- TJ (10/5): - Awesome place! We had such a wonderful and relaxing time
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was so welcoming and kind. We watched the holiday parade from the front porch. Breakfast was very good. Great spa and hot tub. A two minute walk to Barter Theater.
- Kathy (10/5): - Excellent staff, fantastic restaurant and beautiful room!
- Vanessa (10/5): - Love The Martha. Hot tub and wading pool beautiful and Victorian enclosed pool. Walk to Barter Theatre. Priceless
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Such historic charm! This property is old and creaky in the best possible way! It is decorated well, nothing feels old- the beds and bathrooms are all updated, and it’s very clean. Typical of a bed and breakfast, there wasn’t an ironing board or mini fridge in the rooms, though they had everything I needed when I asked. Beautiful property, and a great pace to explore. Breakfast was good and the bar/restaurant area is lovely. Wish they had the fireplace on when I was there. One thing to note, there are not many dinner options on Sunday and Monday nights as the local places are closed those days. All in all it was a wonderful stay.
- Alexander (10/5): - Beautiful decor, friendly and professional staff and excellent restaurant. The “Sisters” restaurant served a delicious dinner and breakfast. Nice variety of dishes.
The grounds of the Inn are quite beautiful and majestic.
You really could not ask for anything more. We will definitely come back just to spend another evening here and see another production at the theatre across the street.
If you travel and enjoy first class conditions, this a must go to destination.
- A Blanton (10/5): Historic Abingdon and hotel. - Wonderful little town in the Virginia mountains. Hotel is nice even if a little shabby, but everything works.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was beautiful, historic and atmospheric. The service was excellent. Because we tend to arrive later in the evening, it would be nice if the lounge remained open past 9:00 pm, but I understand there is probably little demand.
- Ellen (6/5): Disappointing anniversary stay - We were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary, have dinner at Sisters and see a play at the Barter. The hotel is beautiful and we were happy with ur room. Dinner was not up to par. The filet for $39 was salty from too much gorgonzola and sickly sweet from the compote or relish that was on top of the gorgonzola. The vegetables were very skimpy, a few thin slices of potato and 3 skinny asparagus. Big disappointment. The fire alarm went off at 3:30 a.m. It was a false alarm which ended up freezing the elevators so we had to carry our luggage down the stairs. No bellman or porter in sight. We did see one young man walk by to deliver sheets to a room, didn't ask if we needed help. Breakfast eggs were over cooked but otherwise good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice hotel. Love the atmosphere. Food was excellent.
- Kathy (8/5): - The reason I put the hotel staff down as pleasant is because of the bellmen (if that is still the right title). They stood around and watched me load and unload things, even carry a HUGE suitcase down a flight of stairs, versus offering assistance or really taking the case himself. I’m in good shape for 50, but would have appreciated the help!! Also, we weren’t told breakfast came with the meal when we checked in so we didn’t get to take advantage of that until the last day!
