Guest Reviews
- MARK (2/5): Disgusting - The room had mould, artex was falling off the wall the whole room was disgusting
- Chad (10/5): My third stay at The Royal - This was my third stay at The Royal Hotel. The beds are really comfy so I slept like a log. It is an old building and has lots of character. The hotel is near a supermarket, town and local shops. I will definitely be staying again. Thanks to everyone at The Royal hotel
- KEVIN (8/5): - I only stayed one night but it was comfortable, quiet, close to amenities and the staff were pleasant, nice people .
- Gershom (2/5): - They are racist
- Michael (4/5): Horrible - Staff in the pub were great but everything about the hotel side was horrible. Surfaces were sticky , carpets really badly stained, everywhere smelt of mould, walls were crumbling, no hot water, cold water tap on sink didnt work, bed was clean but lumpy and the headboard was filthy worn and stained. Mould and rust in the bathroom, bedside lights didnt work . If I'd brought bedding I'd have chosen to sleep on the floor of my work van!!
- Gavin (10/5): VFM stay - Great value stay for the night. With everything you’d need provided.
- Mark (8/5): - People working at the Royal were great. The hotel was a little dated and the room was missing a few bulbs for the lights.. it served our purpose and was in town close to everything we needed. Spent every night in the bar area, drinks and food were good prices..
for breakfast go to the Blue bell inn…
- Miss C (2/5): Discusting - The room was disgusting there was ppl smoking weed in there rooms uvcould smell it there was mould all in bathroom we was kept up all night with a couple fighting an crying i have a recording widows was borded up blood on walls the pictures on advertised page was deffo not the same as place wen we got there i asked for refund as it was a disgrace an was told no id never go there again an id tell others not to pay what thay charge im very very dissatisfied an upset it was very traumatising
- saffron (8/5): Good price - Nice place clean staff are friendly, could do with a revamp as had trouble with the shower. Over all it was good price, comfortable beds
- Sean (8/5): - Helpful staff. Freshly prepared cooked breakfast.
- Timothy (6/5): Ok at best - Most staff were great but one particular woman was rather rude when we were double checking our sleeping arrangements. We booked a room for 3 with 1 double bed and 2 singles on arrival we were told it was just 2 doubles, we was happy to suck it up but the lady we spoke to was very aggressive and even said she was going to cancel the booking because she only saw it on the day despite booking 5 weeks prior. Rooms desperately need a refurbishment but did the job for a boozy stop over.
- David (2/5): This hotel could not be much worse. - I was not very happy staying at this hotel. The door to my room for the night was very scratched. Some of the wallpaper in the room was peeling. The hot water tap in the en-suite bathroom sink was falling off. I slept in my clothes because I was not sure how clean the bedding was. I was told before I went upstairs that breakfast would only be a continental breakfast because they were having work done in their kitchen. I did not go downstairs for breakfast. I think that this may be a hotel for the homeless or for immigrants. I will NOT choose this hotel if I ever go to Scunthorpe again.
- Robert (8/5): - Fine convenient and affordable
- Carol (4/5): One night - Friendly welcome, but room was very tired, paper torn on wall, stain ylunder rim of toliet, bathroom, mark round toliet stand, marks round tokes in shower/bath. Bed was the most uncomfortable bed i have ever slept on.
It needs a overall. This is a excellent area for bath hall.. pub is lovley. But not the rooms. We spoke to others that had same experience.
- ian (10/5): - I like staying at the Royal, as it is convenient for me. The rooms are clean and the pub grub is good as well.
- Mark (8/5): Royal - Really lovely helpful staff. Food quality 6.5 out of 10.
- Robert (10/5): - Excellent value in a wonderful town.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It's a tired pub, which we were aware of so knew it wouldnt be 1st class.
Let down by dreadful smell of cigarettes in the corridors to the bedroom though. Clearly used by smokers who dont respect the rules - but likewise, it was quite stale suggesting frequent and not frowned upon.
Our room was through an additional door and this side of the door had hardly any evidence of cigarette smoke and once in the bedroom it was a fresh room with clean bedding - phew!
Unfortunately constuction work outside began at 7:20am on a SUNDAY!! (Not the fault of the hotel)
- Jill (8/5): - How was day was okay we came down from North Yorkshire because of a family christening one or two things wrong with the room but it’s a room where we could sleep
- Richard (8/5): - There were some maintenance issues that the staff said they had been waiting over 3 months to get fixed via head office
- Rute (8/5): Only one thing missing - Booked a room for a couple of nights for myself and my son as a last minute break to visit some family. The room itself was nice and warm. However, when we check-in not a lot of information was provided and the website does not state accurate times for breakfast which made us miss breakfast on the first morning that we had already paid for. Other than that, we've had no issues at all and the staff were very friendly.
- Skye (10/5): - Lovely spacious room, nice staff, didn't find anything wrong with the hotel
- Ðavid (10/5): Excellent hotel - Tidy and hygiene was brilliant friendly staff very comfy and relaxing definitely stay again highly recommended
- Marian (2/5): - Nothing like photos. Sat on the bed and then headboard fell off. Bathroom has damp and mould. Whole room was disgusting so did not stay. Quick enough in taking the money on arrival but won’t see it back for at least 10 days!
- Darren (10/5): - My stay was very good , the staff were really friendly and made me feel at home
I'm not one to complain but the beds could have been a little bit bigger but that's just my preference like a queen or king bed as a double bed between two you can barely move but other than that everything was spot on
- Stuart (6/5): - Very dated bedroom and tiny tv, the shower was terrible no power at all and just dribbled out.!!!
- Antony (10/5): Very enjoyable - Good value for money. Good place to rest your head. Staff fantastic. Will continue to stay there.
- Peter (10/5): - Very close to everything.
- Dave (8/5): - Room was nice and warm, staff were friendly
A bit dated property but comfortable
- G (8/5): Nice boozer - Stayed for work good price cheep beer. Food looked good at a good price didnt try it though as was knackered. All staff and patrons were very friendly and welcoming
- David (2/5): Very disappointed - We arrived after a 3 hour car drive only to wait 20 minutes for someone to check us in !! Room very tired with bulbs missing and poor decor and mould on the bathroom ceiling. Rusty light fittings and badly worn headboard on the beds.
- Colette (10/5): Business trip - Very much budget accommodation, the decor is faded and tired, but, for the price, it was great. Spacious room, quiet, air conditioning. Decent pub grub. Comfy bed.
- Mark (8/5): - Good value for money.
- Debbie (2/5): Awful - We booked this family room as it stated a double bed and two singles. We were with our two grandchildren a boy age 15 and a girl aged 12 1/2. Therefore single beds required. When we checked in we were told it was a bed and sofa bed. When I said no it’s singles they said we don’t have any. I said when booking it states that and their answer was it’s not up to date.
The reception is hid away on side of basically a pub/resturant. It is dark and definitely needs refurbishing.
When we arrived back from our event there was no parking as the pub was full. It is situated on a main road by traffic lights so no parking on the road. We had to park right up where the staff kitchen area was. There should be parking clearly marked for people staying there.
It is somewhere I will never stay at again and anyone going to please double check what you are booking. I wish I had.
- Tim (6/5): Only OK - Small room and tiny bathroom. Insecure door locks
- Margaret (10/5): Good location - Great location, lovely breakfast
- Brian (8/5): - Breakfast was spot on, breakfast chef easy to get on with.
- Robert (10/5): Lovely staff - The staff are fabulous, a wonderful greeting. Thank you.
- Wayne (2/5): Avoid if you like to sleep and have breakfast - Dreadful, huge amounts of noise from inside the hotel, walls like paper, floors that transmit the vibrations of people stomping around and doors slamming, was woken up at 4am
on arrival i checked at reception cost and time for breakfast and was told £9 and 08:30, this was repeated later by bar staff.
0830 in the morning told very rudely by manageress? no breakfast, staff training day, and when complained about noise and disturbances was all but told tough.
I will be complaining directly to green king and requesting a full refund for the stay, it totally ruined the reason i was there due to lack of sleep. also the toilet was ridiculously close wall and bath, just crammed in the small bathroom
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Been a couple of times. Very handy for the Baths hall venue.
- John (4/5): - It was difficult to communicate with the management. It was cheap but the rooms were very small. There was no soap and shampoo and it seemed very difficult to get that. We finally got soap. No shampoo.
- Sayma (8/5): Basic but good! - The Royal Hotel is good enough. We come to Scunthorpe to see family and need a place to stay and the Royal hotel does the job. No frills, inexpensive and you get what you pay for. The bed is comfortable. The family room is spacious enough. It's a little dated but comfortable enough, staff are friendly and we've stayed here a couple of times and will continue to stay here
- Philip (10/5): - The welcme was good roomqas perfect and clean the food was brilliant
- Chad (8/5): Humble for an industrial town - I enjoyed visiting my home town. This is my second stay at The Royal hotel. I remember looking at the hotel as a teenager because the rock bands that visited the town would stay there lol. It's a humble place. It's Scunthorpe
- Robert (10/5): - Good for a few nights. Clean warm and friendly staff
- Jonathan (6/5): - Nice enough hotel and bar. Did not like tge fact I was told payment had gone out for my room and it had not. Went out on the 30th. Also not happy when I got back after loading out with my band mates over the road and the bar was shut. Doubtful will stay again.
- D (8/5): Great stay - Good value, clean and friendly. Food good.
- Nicola (10/5): - Lovely staff and excellent service.
- Rob (8/5): - Everthing was excellent apart from matresse. Very old.
- Matthew (4/5): Confusing stay - Room not as described on Hotels.com with a king and a pull out sofa where a double and two singles expected. Hotel noted this was an issue with hotels.com as they do not have any rooms of this type.
Helpful staff under the circumstances but sharing with a wriggly 5 year old was not ideal!
- martin (6/5): Nice people shame about the building and not cheap - Very helpful people in a poor building.
- David (8/5): - On checking I went to my room and there was no bulb in my over the bed light. This however was rectified within 5 mins.
My only complaint would have to be that, in my room, there was no bedside table. Meaning that there was nowhere to put my spectacles or book at night and to put a drink.
- Thomas (4/5): -
- janet (4/5): - Very old and worn, needs updating
- Glynn (8/5): Ok stay but probably not the best value for money - Staff were brilliant all through Only disappointing thing was I’d booked a room with a double bed and ended up in a room that had two singles so wasn’t the best comfort but I arrived later in the evening and was so tired so didn’t go back to reception but wished I had as didn’t get the best nights rest Bathroom was somewhat tired and shower hose leaked but managed at least water was hot
- Ian (6/5): Very tired rooms - Stay was ok handy for the visit to the baths hall, the hotel reception hallways and room I felt were really tired and in need of refreshment.
- James (8/5): - I enjoyed my stay, not the first time I have stayed here, but nice tha the receptionist remembered my face (not sure if that is a good thing). Nice to be able to have a bath as well. Only observation, other than the loose tap, was the glass shelf above the sink, that had one thing missing, the glass shelf !!. Prices were good and the breakfast was also good.
I will be staying there again
- Sadanand (10/5): - Staff are good and quick service. Shower and heating are good..
- Jameels (8/5): - GOOD PLACE TO STAY WITH ACCESS TO SEVERAL IMPORTANT PLACES
- Robert (4/5): Basic room - Cheap hotel, so expect the facilities to be the same. Very dated indeed, with a funky smell in the bathroom and rusty sink/bath. Somewhere to sleep only, not a room to hang around in and relax.
- Gloria (6/5): Long wait to check in - Bad checking in, bar man couldn’t do it as wasn’t trained & had to wait over an hour for the manager to arrive!
Room ok, breakfast ok
- David (10/5): - Very comfortable room very cheap dinning in the daytime & evening
- Jerzy (10/5): - Very good
- Martyn (6/5): Could be better - Needs updating and very noise until 4am
- Michael (6/5): A day in Scunthorpe - It was ok. Heater in the room wasn't working so was given a radiator.
- Victoria (8/5): Great little place for a couple of nights. - Last minute decision, found this hotel, accommodating and staff were lovely, especially the lady on the breakfast shift.
Couldn't hear any noise from the pub downstairs.
- Michelle (4/5): - Very poor and not very clean
- David (8/5): - Staff very friendly, locarion great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Check in was very efficient and friendly, my stay was good value for the money I paid
- Verified traveler (6/5): Getting what you pay for - Can't fault the friendliness of the staff but the rooms themselves are very run down. You really are getting what you pay for.
- Jim (8/5): Visit from Cleethorpes - The pub facilities are 5 star and the manager is one of the best. The upstairs accommodation is very basic and in need of an upgrade but for £40 a night was clean and good value with the added bonus of the entitled discount in the bar.
- Leason (10/5): - Excellent stay nice place and staff stayed there many times and will do so in the future great team good bar excellent food
- Jamie (10/5): Cheap and not nasty. - Reception staff excellent and bar staff also great.
Rooms very warm and comfy and not a great deal of noise apart from around 7am.
Great place to stay.
- chris (10/5): Hotel stop over made easy - Staff where very good from the reception to bar to chiefs, all where good
- Nigel (2/5): - Despite phoning for 1 and a half hours to report a delayed check in, no one answered the phone or the number on the late check in at the premises!!
- Simon (4/5): Disappointed - Friendly staff, pub downstairs. What more could you ask for? Now for the bad bits. Mattress massively sagged in the middle so was very uncomfortable, only one light worked in the room, may seem trivial but only one battery in the tv remote so it didnt work and the double glazing barely kept any of the noise out.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Check in was easy, the room was clean and comfortable the bathroom dito, with nice towels.
The meals in the bar were good. all in all a very pleasant place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice clean, comfortable quiet room. Nice shower plenty of hot water, I would recommend and use the Royal again.
- Angela (10/5): Great place to stay. - I always stay here when I come to Scunthorpe. It’s central the staff are friendly and the food and drinks are very good.
The supermarket is next door if you’ve forgotten anything too which is handy.
- Angela (10/5): Be back soon - Love staying here. Always friendly perfectly located for the town and free onsite parking is just great. The rooms are always exceptional.
- Julie (2/5): - Walked into the room looked around and walked straight back out! Handed keys in at reception didnt even stay the night. Total waste of the money paid plus 70 pound travelling expenses. NEVER again.
- Andrew (10/5): - Excellent manager and staff
- Tracy (6/5): - The rooms were very dated and not overly clean, saying that, the bed was very comfortable. There was quite a lot of noice on the Sunday night from the pub below. There were very pleasant staff and one in particular who didn’t crack a smile at all. My husband ate in the restaurant with our 2 children while I popped to town, he suggested I find something to eat while I was out as their food was not great. The best thing about the hotel is the fact that it is almost opposite an Indian restaurant called ‘Megna’ where we had the best Indian food we had ever eaten.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Hotel was not suitable for us. Room needed some better cleanliness attention, smelt unpleasant.
We did not stay and have been told we will get our money back, staff were apologetic.
- steven (10/5): - Nice and chill out time over the new year for me and the wife. Brilliant breakfast on both days. Very welcoming manager would use again thanks.
- Chad (8/5): Pleasant stay - I had a pleasant stay at the royal hotel.
There was a function held downstairs on the Saturday and music played up until 10.30, which I didn’t expect.
Having said that, I would stay again, as it is value for money
- Bonifacio (8/5): Dream House - I am pleased to stay in the Hotel. The staff are so helpful and pleasant. The room in this winter is warm and comfortable. The property is clean and situated in the heart of the town.
- Zamimpilo (8/5): Goo service - Very good service, although we got 'tricked' by hotel.com app cookies to book Royal Hotel scunthorpe instead of one in Royal Hotel Hull. Spent weekend driving up and down hull and scunthorpe
- David (10/5): My trip - Great hotel situated in great area and food in bar was excellent value
- richard (6/5): lovely staff - tired accommodation - Basically a sports pub with accomodation. Staff individually lovely but very stretched . Whole place could do with a makeover as pricey for what it is.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Decided to stay here as it was cheaper than Travelodge/Premier Inn. Had our wedding reception here back in 1997 when this was a much better hotel. We didn’t check in until 9pm so ample time to get our room ready except this wasn’t the case! The room we were allocated was not as described - we reserved a family room which said it would have 1 double and 2 single beds supplied. Room consisted of double bed and a small sofa bed. No bedding for the sofa bed had been supplied, had to go back down to reception to request this. Room itself was very dated, floorboards and bathroom door were extremely creaky! There seemed to be a lot of contractors staying that required early morning wake up calls - this would have been ok if there had been phones in the room but there wasn’t! These consisted of staff knocking the room doors to wake the occupants except the occupants seemed to sleep through it so they had to knock a few times!! Next time we stay in Scunthorpe it won’t be here - will definitely pay the extra money to stay elsewhere!!
- Ijaz (4/5): Won't recommend - Arrived late and was told that we should have phoned property if coming after 1030 pm. We did not have this intimation though.
We were harrassed for not getting entry. Lady Staff was quite rude with no consideration.
Not 3 star hotel at all. Very old building. Perhaps 1-2 star. Not worth of the price charged in Scunthorpe.
Small room with small bathroom
Very hot room with no fan available at all
Was threatened to leave the room by 1100
Breakfast staff was very good and responsive. Breakfast was good though amount of food provided was just ok as there was no buffet.
- Ali (2/5): - Wouldn’t touch with a barge pole
No cooling or portable fan provided as it was against health and safety policy and outside temperature was 30 degrees Celsius
One of the most uncomfortable nights that I experienced
This hotel should be removed from Hotels.com listing
- Verified traveler (6/5): - At £40 a night for 2 people, i would says its value for monry. Comfortable but sparse room. comfy bef. However havind ordered fi ner, that was a disaster. 2 meald out of 3 were incorrect. 1 came back corrected but cold. Wouldnt eat there again.
staircase and la dings badly in need of decorating
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Close to venue for concert. Tinnest double bed ever! Didnt sleep a wink. Staff lovely and polite. Breakfast for £7.99 not inpressive. Sorry
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was very good and spacious . Bathroom was ok but not up to the standard of the room. Staff were very helpful and all taken in to account a good place to stay
- Alan (2/5): Rude Staff - Staff were very rude when checking in, i arrived at 13:50 to check in at 14:00 and was told i had to wait until 14:00. when i questioned had the cleaners finished i was told by the staff the rules are the rules Pal.
Never Again will i stat there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - nice hotel drains a bit smelly, but other than that an enjoyable stay staff were friendly
- Stephen (8/5): - Good service and friendly staff
- Mark (8/5): Decent VFM, but not luxury - Stayed overnight for a business meeting.
Staff were all very friendly and being in a Greene King pub meant some decent beer (although sadly the Abbot was off when I ordered) and the food (dinner and breakfast) were both pretty decent too, especially for the price.
Handy for the Baths Hall if you're there for an event and a big Sainsbury's next door proved handy for me.
It's a short walk into town, although it's a pretty ordinary and not very pretty part of town where the hotel is. It didn't feel dangerous, though, if you're of a nervous disposition. I came by train, but I would have felt happy leaving my car in the car park (as many had).
My room was looking a bit tired with some stains in the bathroom and tatty paintwork. It was, though, clean enough and I slept extremely well, so I would say it was decent VFM if you're looking for something like that in Scunthorpe.
