• DenelleK (10/5): Wow, just wow ! - We were on a 21 day road trip and this was the best place we stayed. It was better than all of the Best Westerns, Days Inn and a few independents we stayed at. Parking right at the door, good heater, good bathroom with two sink areas. Nice carpet, great weather stripping on the door. Light and bright old fashioned decor, good sized room with a nice table to eat or work at. The only thing I hope they improve would be the size of the TV. Breakfast bag included a muffin and a very tasty bear claw. There are coffee pods in the room. This motel is family owned for generations. It was also the cleanest place we stayed. Just a super nice place and very reasonable.
• Galeda (8/5): A genuine vintage motor court on Route 66 - My husband and I were travelling across country and wanted to stay in vintage lodging along Route 66. We chose the Sunset Motel, and we were not disappointed! The property is in a “L”-shaped motor court design and was opened in 1959. The original motor court has been maintained, with attractive landscaping and many art pieces evocative of Route 66. Attention has been paid to the property’s original appearance, and vintage elements have been kept and lovingly maintained (e.g., paneling in the rooms, the tile bathroom and sink, and the mid-century furniture and lamps). At the same time, necessary modern elements have been incorporated (the individual heating/cooling unit for the room [“mini-split”], modern TV, microwave and fridge, and low-flow toilet) which all worked well. There are charging stations for EVs in the central parking area. We especially appreciated the thoughtful elements like the rubber duck in the bathroom, Peet’s coffee for our coffeemaker, and chocolate kisses on the nightstand. There are plenty of bed linens (including extra blankets) and towels and washcloths for the bathroom. Our room had a nice set-up, with a sink in the bathroom as well as second one in the adjacent vanity area. The water pressure was a little low, and the temperature control for the shower was fairly touchy, but the plumbing was otherwise functional. The beds had very soft mattresses, which were great for my husband but not firm enough for me. The motel’s cinderblock construction kept our room quiet despite being right on Route 66 (just off I-40), and we didn’t notice any highway noise. The TV’s operation took some figuring out; choosing “menu” on the remote finally gave us instructions for the system. The operation of the room’s heating and cooling unit was also somewhat confusing, despite instructions posted next to the remote on the wall. It would be nice if the proprietors could provide simple instructions in the room or on the website regarding details for guests (e.g., how to get ice, operation of the TV and HVAC system). We know that extremes of temperature can occur in this area of the country; we stayed here during a temperate time and were comfortable, but we cannot fully comment on how effective the heating/cooling system would be for any given room mid-summer or in the dead of winter. All the exterior walls appear freshly painted, and the central parking area is clean and well-lit. The motel has easy access to local restaurants (be aware that all dining establishments in town close between 8 and 9 pm). Also be aware that, while travel sites state that the motel offers a “free breakfast,” the hotel’s website does not state this. Guests are provided with a gift bag with 1 pastry and 1 clementine per person, and there are coffee and tea available in the room. If you are looking for a genuine vintage motel on Route 66, we recommend the Sunset Motel!
• sandrabM2039CD (10/5): Hospitality at its finest! - I believe we were checked in by the owner, she was absolutely sweet and hospitable! She checked us in and sent us to our room with a delightful carry out breakfast for the morning. The breakfast was bakery, muffins and little cutes ( mini tangerines) The room had a cute little rubber duckie at the tub, a nostalgic clock and clean, inviting feeling to it. The hotel is at an easy location just off hwy 40 a bit. Quiet, tucked away from traffic noise yet easy enough to get back on the road again. Thank you for the wonderful stay and special little touches you’ve added to make it such a friendly stay! We will definitely stay again when passing through for a night stay over
• Navigator14164086649 (10/5): The perfect stopover! - The motel is immaculately retro. Every aspect was perfect. We were given a continental breakfast to enjoy in the morning. Don’t forget to say hi to the rubber ducky on the bathtub. We would highly recommend this motel. We will be back.
• Jeffrey (10/5): - An overnight stay on the way west. This is the only motel in 2400 miles of historic Route 66 that is still run by the family who built it. Their commitment to your comfort is as good as you'll find. A good alternative to staying in Albuquerque if that is not your ultimate destination.

This is a boutique style motel so it was unique with its own special touches, vintage western decor and truly fit the classic Route 66 vibes I would expect in the “blink and you miss it” town of Moriarty. The “good night kiss” Hershey’s kisses in the room as well as the little rubber ducky on the bath towels were adorable and appreciated! The bedding was soft, beds were comfortable and the cleanliness was impressive given the age of the building. I would definitely recommend this motel.

• Franklin (10/5): - It was clean and quiet. Check in was fast and access to the room was easy. We were on a road trip and appreciated a fast in and out, no hassle experience at a reasonable price. We like the old school privately owned hotels that are well kept like Sunset. Back up to the door and haul your junk straight into the room. No dragging coolers through lobbies and elevators and hallways. After all, we didn't fly half way across the country to waste time looking at hotels, did we? Breakfast.... well, that's not a breakfast where we come from. We had to hit the cooler and food stash for breakfast that morning. Still, we'd stay there again.

It was clean, quiet and you have parking spot designated for your room which makes it super easy to carry your bags in to your room as it's right in front of it. The owner is so very kind and even made things right as my husband I messed up on the check in day when we booked ( it was for the next day ) and she took care of it and even gave me a pair of ear plus as I forgot to pack mine. Can't say enough about this motel from 1959... Cute rooms, cute landscape along with a bag with fruit and danish upon check in... A to go breakfast or after dinner snack.... We will be back... Many more times.

The vintage chairs needs new cushions, unknown it they where ever replaced The blinds are easily knocked off so be careful but they are easily put back on We had a muffin, bear claw and 2 oranges in our welcome bag. Just leave tbe key on the dresser and head on your way

• Elizabeth (6/5): - I wish people would be more truthful on these reviews. When people say retro, what they mean is it's old. The staff was fine, but to be rated at a 9.1 is a big stretch. No ice machine exept when the office is open, the breakfast is nothing but a pastry from like a gas station and a piece of fruit. In our room there was a left over cup of soda in the refrigerator. I'm giving it a 3.5 because it was adequate for a one night stay, but nothing to write home about.

They were happy to accommodate us with a late check in when we called to discuss timing of arrival - around midnight as we were traveling through. Most other hotels in the area were much higher prices with not so nice reviews. I’m glad we found this little family hotel. My only complaint would be that it’s full size beds, not queen. There is a larger than normal hotel refrigerator and a microwave in the room. We would definitely stay again if in the area! This truly is a gem!

The little extras really set them apart, from a snack bag, to the little yellow duck or hershey kisses. I didn't worry about locking doors, even. Truly like stepping back in time, in such a good way. If you are traveling Route 66, give them a try. You will be glad you did! ❤️

The room and bathroom are in keeping with their original Route 66 style but spotlessly clean and comfortable. We slept well and really enjoyed the pastries in the breakfast bag which were freshly baked and much better than most chain hotel breakfasts. We definitely recommend staying here for a delightful slice of Route 66 nostalgia!

• L9610NQlauried (10/5): Quaint, quiet, and convenient on Route 66 - I rarely write reviews, but I just had to say something! From the first phone call with Shaunna, the motel manager, to the convenience and cleanliness of this place, every moment was perfect. We called from the road and Shaunna was kind, helpful, and reassuring. We arrived after hours and found our cute little breakfast gift bag with oranges and fresh baked pastries, two chocolate Hersey's Kisses on the nightstand, and a rubber duckie on the edge of the bathtub displayed in our room. For a motel that opened 66 years ago (on route 66 - seriously!), it was cleaner than many newer hotels! I was stunned! We were able to pull our truck and trailer right up to the door of our room and unload it late at night. You have no idea how much my husband appreciated that convenience! And then the little table and chairs right outside our door was great for the first cup of coffee. We very much appreciated the quaint, personal touches. This was a perfect stop and we would be thrilled to stay again. Thank you, Shaunna. And although we didn't get to meet Mike and Debbie Pogue, thank you to you as well, for keeping the charm and integrity of the motel, as it was intended.

The second generation family owners take great pride in this Route 66 jewel. Ive stayed here eight times and I always look forward to the next visit. Just a short drive from Albuquerque, i recommend the Sunset when visiting the “Duke City” too. Stay in quiet, safe, affordable Moriarty and make Albuquerque a day trip; you won’t regret it.

The front desk staff was friendly and beds were super comfortable. There was a nice small courtyard and I would much rather stay in a place like this over the other standard options by the highway.

• David (10/5): A 1950's Luxurious Reminder - Staying in a Route 66 motel takes one back to the 50's. It's a fun and excellent reminder of what they had back then and what we have today. In those early years a sign that said "We have TV" was a very big deal. It was a very peaceful and quiet stay. I slept the night through. Thank you Sunset for a wonderful stay.

• Robert (8/5): Passing thru - The room was small but clean and adequate for a night's sleep. Front desk clerk was very nice. The bed was not comfy for my husband and I. The biggest drawback is that our bathroom had no heat at all. It was too cold to shower in there.
• Sage4U-please (10/5): Timeless and excellence - Stopped in here a few times oh my an old motel, which is a classic everything is an excellent condition. The bed is so comfortable everything you could want and so so clean, which is my pet peeve. This will not disappoint. You been in the family since the 1950s it’s generational for sure. The people are so pleasant and willing to go to any length for you so kind genuinely. They even have their breakfast fruit and pastries which are divine. Welcoming warm and a perfect location.
• Chris (10/5): - Friendly from first contact, wonderful dog relief park, comfortable beds, lots of hot water. We will use this hotel again!
• JDP1477 (10/5): A New Favorite - I've stayed at several of the old Route 66 motels, and I've got to say that the Sunset Motel in Moriarty, New Mexico is my new favorite! The rooms are good sized, and some have the original blond oak furniture. The motel is an "easy on, easy off" of Interstate 40. I had a great conversation with one of the owners, and learned a lot about the property, and a little bit about the family that has owned and operated it since it opened in 1959. Well worth the time to talk with her. And for those who have electric vehicles, they have four EV charging stations. The only downside is the rather wimpy shower - not unusual in the vintage properties. All-in-all, would highly recommend the Sunset Motel.

• Allen (10/5): Consistently Excellent - Smart, friendly staff & management. An awesome authentic midcentury facility that is spotlessly clean. The rooms are true MC but the mattresses are comfortable. Ive now stayed here 6-7 times and its consistently excellent. One of my favorite Route 66 motels.
• Shirley (4/5): - Didn’t like the heating unit,didn’t keep our room warm. The parking for our room number was in a corner,and had a hard time getting in, the toilet was only about 18’ off the floor,hard to get off,and no handrails in bathroom. Bad experience.
• Valerie (10/5): - My family traveled to NM from Missouri and they had the absolute best experience. The woman I spoke with on the phone to inform that they would be there after reservation, was absolutely amazing! She was very sweet and respectful. Nice and accomodating. Thank you soo much!!
• michellegraceb2025 (10/5): Clean, Historic and Friendly Place to Rest - One of the friendliest and cleanest hotels we’ve stayed at. They pay attention to little details and make you feel at home. They provide a breakfast bag with oranges and pastries, Hershey’s kisses by the bed and rubber duckies for the tub. Nostalgic, vintage and well taken care of, the owners take pride in keeping this property historic yet maintained. They are so family friendly and love kids. It’s convenient being able to park in front of your room. We lovingly call this place “The Cozy Cone” like from Cars after driving down Route 66 through the desert. Multiple times it seemed like we were driving through Radiator Springs with all the beautiful rock formations on our way here. There was even a tow truck parked out that looked like Towmater. Ha! We will be back to visit again.

• Steve (10/5): Great value, great people - This is an excellent and charming little hotel, and a great value. Tucked away on the historic Route 66, has a lot of history. Very comfortable, nice folks at the front desk.
