Guest Reviews
- Hutcheson (7/5): Enjoyable and if would return - The atmosphere and staff were fabulous. The windows wouldn't open .
- Chris (6/5): - Location Too noisy till the doof doof stopped at 4am
- Dresshti (7/5): -
- TURNER (6/5): was short and sweet! - The food was great, and all the staff looked to be enjoying themselves working as a team, from the kitchen staff to the bar staff. well done would be nice to offer ear plugs on the nights the doof doof music plays till 3pm to those staying there, we all like to party and have a great time, but some had to get up early and play sports. etc.

- Prabu (1/5): A filthy, cockroach-infested hotel with smelly water and used soap – completely unsafe - location is good. I chose this hotel because it was shown as suitable for families, but that turned out to be completely misleading. I understand it’s a “bar hotel,” but if you market yourself as family-friendly, you must meet basic family expectations. Unfortunately, this was a very, very worst experience.
Where do I even begin?
Used soap was given for guests – unhygienic and unacceptable.
German cockroaches everywhere – not just one or two, but a full infestation. Right next to the coffee mugs, a whole family of cockroaches with eggs was staying. If room service actually cleaned every day, how could this go unnoticed?
Smelly water for both shower and face washing – it was unbearable and made us feel dirty after trying to clean up.
For families with kids, these issues pose serious health risks. Children are more vulnerable to allergens, bacteria, and respiratory problems from cockroach droppings. The used soap and foul water can cause skin infections or worse. A holiday should be relaxing, not a fight for basic hygiene.
My strong suggestion: if the hotel cannot maintain minimum cleanliness, they should restrict stays to adults only (18+). But honestly, no guest should be subjected to this, regardless of age.
I went away for a holiday to unwind, and this hotel made it one of the most disappointing trips ever. Save your money and your health – avoid this place unless they completely overhaul their cleaning and pest control.
- Jordan (8/5): Short sharp n pleasant - Good pub It was good
- Vanessa (7/5): -
- Spong (9/5): - Cool hotel . 2nd time there .
- PetA (3/5): - Location Stuffy room
- Zhaoyan (7/5): -
- Paul (7/5): - This was a cheap and cheerful option compared to other accommodation in Newcastle...and in a great location. The pub downstairs has a super friendly vibe with a restaurant too. The shower room facilities are basic and could do with some refreshing but given the price it was not a big deal for me.

- Jason (10/5): Perfectly situated budget hotel close to Newcastle CBD area. - I just needed a bed to stay in for the night while passing through Newcastle. Perfect solution for that, but obviously not exactly luxurious. You get what you pay for and this was great value for $$ It was all exactly to the expectation of what I paid for.
- Scott (9/5): - The chicken wings were amazing.
Walked in off the street we were in our room about 10mins later very easy very quick.
- Peder (2/5): - Svårt att hitta ingången. Dörren vid hotellskylten ledde in i en spelhall. Fick gå till baren för incheckning. Kuddarna i sängen luktade surt. Ett bottennapp. Boka inte detta hotell.
- Gary (4/5): - Location is great for what we required. Staff were friendly,
Great little old pub but the rooms could definitely use a little TLC. Grout in bathroom and shower were terribly mouldy.
A couple of the bed base slats were broken allowing the mattress to sink.
Blinds and windows were difficult to open and close.
- Jack (7/5): - Staff was helpful. Bed was comfortable. Bar was busy but room was relatively quiet. Toilets seemed a bit run down. Shower was constantly running, could not seem to turn it off.
- Jason (5/5): -
- Mitsumi (7/5): - Good location. It was good to have Aldi nearby. The room was clean enough. Very noisy. There were a kettle and a few cups, but no coffee or tea which was sad.
- Joel (5/5): met our expectations - location/staff beds / bathrooms

- Stephanie (1/5): Go for a drink - but don't stay the night - Great location, friendly people, mostly friendly and helpful staff (apart from the manager on duty that night).
Lovely old pub vibe. The electricity on the accommodation level stopped working at 8:30 pm. Staff tried to fix it but couldn't. When I asked, I was advised that an electrician had be called. That was around 10 pm. No further updates were given to the numerous guests staying that night.
The power didn't come on all night - so no light, no phone charging, NO AIR CON on one of the hottest summer nights. Trying to find the shared bathroom in a pitch-black corridor was near impossible. I also require a CPAP and couldn't use it as it needs electricity.
When I requested a refund, it was bluntly refused. Not happy.
- Brad (8/5): - extra charge on top of what i already paid
- lisa (10/5): -
- Gay (10/5): A great venue & location - room clean too! - Relaxed & cool -
- David (9/5): -
- Jaya (10/5): - Great location, amenities were fine, the food is excellent and it was all so easy to check in and out. The staff are exceptional!
- makaydee (1/5): Everything is broken - Good location Staff were rude, tv and fridge and window were broken in our room. Shared bathroom with all of the rooms, one toilet and the lock was broken so you couldn’t shut the door when using it.
- Wijesinghe (8/5): -
- Theophile (4/5): -
- Wanlapa (8/5): -
- Nick (1/5): Never again. - Nothing room smelt like cigarettes.
Window didn’t work.
Bed was dreadful.
Bathroom has a tremendous amount of black mould.
Very unclean all around.
- Anthony (3/5): Below par accomodation, old, dirty showers - Staff friendly Very old room, shower grouting black(dirty)...staff great but mangy old room....
- Romane (6/5): - La localisation La clim ne marchait pas
- Haynes (7/5): it was a really good place for one night - the view from the room and the comfiness of the beds and the nice bathrooms and the staff were really helpful and nice when checking in to the room so really happy for a one night stay 10/10
but other than that the room was good the fridge wasnt that great but was still good and the aircon didnt work but we had the fan so was still good there was a quite a bit of noise late at night coming from downstairs but it was a friday night so that was expected and it wasnt that much of a big deal once we were asleep
- Katherine (9/5): -
- Jan (4/5): Decepcionante - Baño bueno Muchísimo ruido en la noche hasta muy tarde. Incluso pasada la hora de cierre del bar. Las camas estaban viejas, gastadas y eran incómodas. El baño no tenía jabón de manos
- Andrew (8/5): - Location late check in
- Rhonda (7/5): - Location and staff Noise
- Gay (10/5): Cool, relaxed vibe - Central to everything
Hotel was good - pub was great! -
- Ian (9/5): All good - Great old fashioned pub Nothing
- Paget (10/5): -
- Sharp (8/5): For access to Hunter street ( street parking only) it was perfect. We liked the old memorabilia and - Clean sheets , comfy double bed and good hot shower. Aircon and a fan . The old hotel Atmosphere downstairs in the evening. The eating area looked great but we could not use it as had other commitments. The window was not able to be opened- looked like something was broken on it . There was no table to rest things on- the jug was on top of the mini bar. - which would have been helpful .
- Matthew (9/5): Great place to stay - Location, price Parking was the thing that was a little bit of a hassle
- Aislinn (1/5): - Friendly staff Extremely dirty with bugs everywhere in the room
- Therese (10/5): -
- Narelle (9/5): -
- Ursula (9/5): Good pub to stay over - Great pub, good room
- Kathy (4/5): - I like the location, it is easy to go to bus stop and some cafes The fridge and kettle are dirty. There was a cockroach in the bathroom
- kerrie (6/5): -
- Gagan (1/5): -
- Savanna (5/5): - The cleaner was very nice and helpful, and we liked the location. The room and bathroom was very dirty and old.
The shared bathroom only had one toilet.
- Belinda (6/5): -
- Sanghee (1/5): - Maybe just location Hard to find parking in the street near the accom
And cockroach keep coming out
- Kym (8/5): Central pub accommodation - It’s convenient and central The staff didn’t tell us much, didn’t let us know about meals or breakfast, where to leave keys etc
- Francisco (5/5): - The staff was nice and the place is central. The rooms made me feel like I was in an asylum. They were very monotone, white and blue.
Worst part were the sounds and music from the bar in the lower floor. Difficult to sleep.
This would maybe be ok if the place was cheaper.
Also the bathrooms helped to make you feel like you are in an asylum.
- Dan (1/5): - The location and the people who are working in the stuff I saw 7 cockroach in the room, 3 around the sofa and 4 in the mining fridge.
Unfortunately I forgot my charger in my room the last day, I have been sending mails and messages , no body answer.
- simon (8/5): - Good sized room, comfortable beds, clean. Great value if you just want a place to sleep for a night or two
- Julie (5/5): -
- Paiva (9/5): - Location is very good, it is in the centre.
- Tim (8/5): -
- Andrea (8/5): Close to my family who love in Cooks Hill - Position Could do with a new fridge. It was old and didnt work well.
- Deidrie (8/5): clean & comfortable. Friendly staff and an excellent bistro. - The rooms are old but nice and clean as is the linen. The beds are comfortable .The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. We have stayed here before and have no hesitation to stay again. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed our stay very much. It is also close to Newcastle Racecourse which is why we were staying. Can't say there was anything we didn't like
- G. (7/5): -
- Gaye (7/5): - Great location. Friendly staff. Excellent menu especially for GF options. I'm too old for stairs after a day of walking around
- Dianne (8/5): Great stay - Position Nothing
- Kelly (10/5): Great place to stay - We love the Commy. Super friendly staff, nice rooms and a great location. Plenty of free street parking close by to.
- Heather (6/5): Affordable pub room - Location to CBD and venues.
Bed and linen comfortable and clean.
Staff very friendly Rooms need fumigation.
- Nikki (3/5): -
- Adventures For My Sanity (6/5): -
- Jessay (7/5): -
- Fran Spinelli (4/5): - The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They let me check in a bit earlier. The place is also quite central and the main city attractions and beaches are accessible. Public transport is available nearby. Unfortunately, the room was not cleaned properly, especially the bathroom. The toilet and shower had not been cleaned. As the accommodation is above a pub, there was a bit of noise (expected, but please be mindful is you are sensitive to noise).
- Uday (5/5): Just decent for the budget, but can be better in terms of cleanliness. - Location was close to NEX and spot on ! Roaches in the rooms. Rooms looked clean but smelt bad.
- Ann Maree (10/5): Wonderful ! - Excellent bed ! Very clean and felt very safe.
- Phillip (9/5): Great value for money for short stay requirements - Location
- James (6/5): Pleasant overnight stay - The room was comfortable and spacious. There was an air conditioner but no control for operation, lucky i didn't need to use it. The water temperature and pressure were great.
The Beer on tap was superb with great atmosphere. The window has to be propped open with the dust bin to allow fresh air. the ceiling fan worked well though. The Bathroom was really in need of attention, Mould, flaky paint and rust stained floors weren't appealing.
- Lukas (8/5): The charm of Newcastle! - All good. It‘s not a 4* hotel. But it‘s unique and nice to stay over night.
- Russell (8/5): Perfect for a short trip to Newcastle. Great staff, good food, great beer & a huge TV in the bar. - Great pub room. Excellent dining, atmosphere & Guinness downstairs Room smelt a little smokey when i arrived, but all good after opening the window.
