Guest Reviews
- MassimilianoG801 (10/5): Great value for money, central location, friendly owner and management - Tucked in a central location in the downtown of Chania and very close to both the harbour and the KTEL station, Mme Bassia is an affordable accommodation with staff and a owner who are very friendly, speak a good English and do their best to meet the need of their customers. The housing is essential but good - my room was clean and WiFi worked well. There is a common kitchen equipped with tools you can use to prepare a breakfast or a simple meal, and every room has its own fridge. Mme Bassia is a very good option to stay in Chania unless: 1) you or one of your group has troubles going up a staircase - the one giving access to the rooms is very steep; 2) you or one of your group has problems sleeping; Mme Bassia is located in the centre of Chania's downtown and there are many people out and about until midnight - 1 am, even later than that on Fridays and Saturdays, which means that the accommodation is in a noisy area. If none of the above applies to you or one of your companions, then Mme Bassia is an option to be considered as in my opinion it really offers great value for money.
- AliCrei (8/5): Great value for money and perfect location - We have just got back from a week stay in Chania and stayed here. I was a little dubious as there are some poor reviews and it seemed almost too reasonable for the location! We were pleasantly surprised though! Lovely big room with a balcony, such an easy walk down to the harbour (less than 5 mins) and really lovely people running it. The only reason I knock a point off is that the bathroom was unintentionally a wet room and this drove us mad! Great stay though and value for money was amazing.
- Alice (8/5): Excellent value for money - Great location and lovely big room with a balcony. Friendly owners and regularly cleaned. Bathroom could do with updating but otherwise fantastic value for money.
- rhionaghr (8/5): Nice room in a great location - Situated in the heart of old Chania town, the rooms are a stone’s throw away from the harbour.
There is one big flight of stairs to get up to the rooms. We were on the top floor so there is also a spiral staircase to lug bags up as well. Cute little kitchen to make tea on the main level. The shower in the bathroom only has a handheld shower head and no holder on the wall mount it. The shower curtain is quite fragile and the pressure varies greatly as does the temperature.
It’s a great place to stay for location for walking around the old town. The owner/manager has a shop downstairs and is very attentive to our needs and making sure the cleanliness was up to our standards.
For the price it’s a good place to stay.
- Jude (10/5): Perfect ! - Perfect position in the heart of the old town of Chania - we had a delightful room with a small balcony and the value was incredible. Highly recommended.
- 423oddh (2/5): Avoid and inform the police - As usual we used internett and our creditcard as we ordered this about 45m2 big room, with a separate kitchen-corner and our own balcony and bathroom in Mme Bassia. But as we arrived we got a room, less than 20 m2 big, without our own balcony and without kitchen. And the room itself was unpleasant and obvious not a room for rental according to the normal standards in Crete. We claimed immediately, but our host - let me call him Mister N. and not with his real name - did not see any problem at all.
We told him exactly what we had ordered and paid for,but he had no interest in the facts. So we had to call Booking.com;they chequed our order and spoke with Mr N and called us back and told us that our host was wrong and that they would block the payment to him.
As we than were about to leave the hotel, tired, angry, swet and disappointed,I told Mr N that I would write about his scam on internett. But his behavior continued:He threathend us and said that he therefore would keep the money we had paid in front of our arrival. And made repeatedly movements with his handy,as if he was able to do so.With a smile on his mouth he disappeared behind the smoke of his tobacco.Who knows what this delusional man had in his pipe?
At least,it was a great relief to get away from his crazyness and his hotel..And it is a nightmare to think about what a host like him could be able to do with the key to our room in his pocket.
The scam in Mme Bassia did cost us some ours of work, headache and we also grew afraid because of this very abnormal behavior.Lies, menace and scams:That is not what you want to meet when you are on holiday. But,thanks to Good, this is not normal on the very charming island of Crete - and the rest of our holiday was just fantastic.
But Mme Bassia:Avoid, avoid, avoid - and feel safe and happy instead.
- GEORGE (8/5): Great location - Nice property very central with great service
- seriously_fussy (8/5): Authentic, friendly and great location - On arrival we were not too happy. We were allocated a room on the first floor that looked nothing like the room on booking.com. The bathroom was dire with just a small shower with no separate cubicle and which flooded into the main room after use. We made a complaint to staff and were moved to the top room accessible by a spiral staircase. This room was much better. It was bigger and had a seating area (which the other room did not). And the bathroom was better although still small and no separate shower cubicle.
The balconies on these properties are small and it is a squeeze to fit two people comfortably. Air conditioning was great and the room cooled quickly (much needed after a day out in mid 30 degree temperarures).
So the room is ok. Well-furnished and clean. And the cleaner was always very friendly and the room always exceptionally cleaned each day.
The big plus with this place is the location. Located down a narrow street in the old town - and really quite authentic and charming - and very close to the main square and the huge numbers of bars and restaurants in the area. Excellent location!! It can get a bit noisy with music and revellers at night so probably not the place if you want peace and quiet. But after all, this is located in the heart of the old town and one would expect such hustle and bustle.
The property owner is very attentive and always keen to help make our stay a pleasant one. He owns the shops beneath the property and was usually always available.
So i would say this is value for money. It is not 4 star accommodation but it is in a 4 star area. So we would award this place 4 stars overall on that premise (but only just).
The bathroom was the real disappointment to us....but it was functional (at least in the second room allocated to us). I would advise you to contact the property in advance of your arrival and request the room on the top floor (It is much better).
All in all we recommend this place.
- helenw354 (10/5): Right in the heart of the old town and great value for money! - Stayed here for 3 nights and had a lovely spacious, light room with a small balcony overlooking the pedestrian street below. Very clean and tastefully decorated, bathroom a little compact and the shower was a bit of a challenge as it did tend to flood the bathroom but it all added to the experience. Great location just off the main pedestrian road to the harbour and also right by the main market. The owner was very welcoming and in fact gave us a better room than we had paid for as he had to fix something in the room we should have had. Room had a fridge which was useful and there is a communal kitchen if you need to borrow cups, plates and glasses etc. We didn't have breakfast there but plenty of nice places nearby that do and one place recommended by the accommodation gave a 2 euro 50 discount so we had a massive english breakfast for 6 euros.
As the street is pedestrianized it was quiet at night and had no trouble sleeping although you sometimes get woken by the nearby church bells around 7am.
Would definitely recommend to others as felt right in the heart of things and yet the price was excellent value for money.
Only slight note of caution is that taxi's can't get right to the accommodation but only a short 2 min walk to where they can drop you off/pick you up. We did order a taxi to the airport that didn't turn up so leave yourself time for a plan B!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - In pieno centro (zona pedonale), accoglienza ottima e camera molto pulita.
- NSGALBUTTEMT (10/5): Great Location! Great Stay! - We stayed at Mme Bassia 4 nights and everything was great! For us, the location was perfect, less than 5 minutes from the bus station and tucked into a side street so noise was not really an issue. About 8 minutes walk to the port and boardwalk. The building is very old and has been nicely decorated. Our room had a little balcony overlooking the street. There is a rooftop sitting area and a common area if you wish to prepare a light meal. The owners have a shop below that sell natural cosmetics and local items, and are always on hand if you need anything! For the price, we were very pleased, and would definitely return when in Chania again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hyggeligt. Tæt på alt. Venligt personale. - Ingen luksus, men god beliggenhed, bekvem afstand til alt. Værelset ok, Dejligt med mulighed for at lave kaffe/the i lille køkken.
- 134belindaa (10/5): Excellent stay - Great access to the harbour and markets. The room was cleaned daily by lovely lady xx Quiet in the evening as only walking traffic. Would stay again. The bells are early but part of the stay. The shop underneath is the landlord so always available
- Lessica (8/5): wonderful stay - Owner is friendly and accommodating, allowing us to leave luggage there till evening departure, Location is central , room is pretty and clean . One minor problem is the draining system is slow , water accumulated in sink and shower. Will love to return.
- lne1981 (8/5): Good value for money - Excellent location, practically inside the old town of Chania, comfortable and clean rooms and friendly staff.
A quite large public parking location is located in close proximity (although somewhat hard to discover).
- 754anastasiad (6/5): Excellent location - In the heart of the City - surrounded by shops and restaurants. 5' from old harbor.
Old building with very small bathrooms and not the cleanest place I've been... nevertheless great price for this location!
- KeithandV (6/5): Loved it last year didn't this time - Last year we had a really nice room, this year another room wasn't so good. The bathroom had a shower with nothing to stop the water from covering everything on the floor, toilet etc. We had to work hard at not letting it seep out into the bedroom. The biggest problem was the lack of adequate shutter to block out light through a high window, consequently we woke very early with light streaming in. There was a shared seating area straight outside the same window so we had an interesting time listening to other people's conversation. The last straw was the church bells which rang out loud and clear before 7 and then 8 etc (in the morning). We gave up and moved on the next day. To be fair, all the people working there were very nice we were just disappointed to have such a bad night's sleep.
- Kang (6/5): Madam Bassia in Xhania, Crete -
- Pancake761 (10/5): Excellent - Lovely room on top floor. 1 double and 1 single bed plus a pull out mattress under the settee. Shower, toilet, fridge, a/c, hair dryer and free use of communal kitchen--tea, coffee, fridge, microwave. Turned up on spec and room was spotless. There was also a tiny balcony with 2 chairs and a table overlooking a pedestrianised street. Very quiet in the room at night considering it was so close to a lot of restaurants and bars. Would definitely recommend.
(Please excuse the unmade bed. That was as we were leaving!)
- ioannis (10/5): Polu orea filoksenia - Polu orea kai omorfo meros
- Stefano (8/5): - Very nice location and frindly guys.
The room clean.
I suggest this rooms to people that love to stay few days in chania
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Simple accommodation friendly staff good value
- Juday_Ibe (8/5): Absoultely lovely! - Girls holiday.
Staff were lovely, breakfast was at one of the restaurants they're linked with (Red Bicycle) - lovely variety! Placement of hotel is great, lots of stuff to see and do near by. They even have a small terrace, which was lovely to sit in whilst we relaxed.
Would come again!!
- 301odiles (6/5): Nice room, nice host BUT there was a rat in our room - Upon arrival at the hotel, our host (who was very nice) presented us our room. At that exact moment, a rat ran from the hallway, across my feet and my partner's, and disappeared into our room... We were disappointed that the host tried to laugh it off, and called it "a big mouse!". After a quick inspection under the beds (with the rat nowhere to be found), he recommended we shut the windows and the balcony when absent, just in case. Not very comforting!
We thought the room was very nice and the hotel very conveniently placed, but we would have appreciated a gesture from our hosts as the presence of a rat reflected poorly on their establishment.
- LyndaC232 (4/5): Disappointing service - We booked for 2 nights and arrived to be told that there had been an error with booking.com and we needed to change rooms for the second night. There was no error and it transpired after questioning further that they wanted to move us because they had recurring customers coming that always used the room they had allocated to us so we would need to shift to facilitate their preference. Not ideal as we were on a bus at 6am the next morning to hike the Samaria gorge and didn't want the hassle of packing up to shift at this time etc. They did in the end let us keep the same room for two nights. Also on booking.com this hotel appears in the list of hotels that offers parking. It does not offer parking. Try your luck with a park on the back streets a few blocks away is not offering parking. This should be amended on booking.com so that it does not come up as an option that offers parking. A younger girl working at the hotel was also extremely rude to us, talked over us and claimed we must be used to 5 star hotels when questioning the parking yet this hotel was the most expensive hotel we had stayed in and we had travelled all around Crete. I don't like assumptions being made about me and her manner was extremely rude. Apart from this the hotel is in a great location, the more elderly lady was lovely and understanding and seemed embarrassed by the younger girl's behaviour yet unfortunately her English was lacking to fully participate in the conversation, the wifi signal is excellent and the rooms are nice. Note there is no hairdryer and the shower is a wet room (no picture of shower on booking.com).
- loisya (10/5): The best place to stay in West Crete - Very good welcome and pleasant people managing this place. The place is well-kept.
Bedrooms are clear, clean and simply decorated, with charm.
the bedrooms overlooking the road are a little bit noisy in spide of the double glazing. Nectarios makes its best to enjoy your trip.
The shop at ground floor is full of good products. I recommend the organic cosmetics.
Thank you for this good moments.
- LondonGreekTraveller (10/5): Lovely old character and charm - We have stayed at Mme Bassia's several times and each time are completely charmed by the character and comfort of the rooms. It really is lovely to open the wooden shutters and sit out on the balcony overlooking the pretty little street. Location is perfect, just a few minutes from the harbour and all the tavernas of the Old Town Nectarios and Alexandria are so friendly and welcoming and are extremely helpful with suggestions of places to see and places to eat and drink.
Very highly recommended!
- gregorys585 (10/5): Very clean, helpful & centrally located - Mme Bassir guesthouse is truly a gem of a find & certainly one of the better ones in the area (& I would know as I had been through a few of them in my search by foot). I certainly had not read any reviews so knew nothing about it beforehand. Nectarios the manager is very hospitable & happy to help whenever he can (ask him about good restaurants nearby & you will not be disappointed). The room we had at the very top (you have to walk up a wrought iron spiral staircase) was very spacious, had its own balcony & was very comfortable. The guesthouse & its rooms are cleaner than clean they are spotless & are cleaned on a daily basis. It's location makes it easy to find, it is central both to the old port & to the bus station making it ideally located. A lot of work has been put into this place to make it was it is & they have done it well. I cannot recommend it more highly.
- citygirldc1 (8/5): Basic Accommodations in a Great Location - Very steep staircase to the "reception" area and the rooms, so be warned about that.
The biggest negative is that there is no reception, hence the quotation marks. We arrived after about 20 hours of flying and were absolutely wrecked. I could not wait to take a shower and lay down on a bed. There was nobody in the reception area, but it instructs you to ring a bell if there is nobody there. So we rang it. And waited. And rang. And waited. Finally, after about 20 minutes, I was on the verge of hysteria and went down the stairs to see if anyone in the little shops could help us. It turns out the little shop two doors down to the right when you are facing the Mme. Bassia door (a kitchen goods shop) is the reception. Is there a sign telling you this in the hotel? No. Is there even the slightest possibility the people in the kitchen shop will hear the bell ring? No.
Once we actually located the reception--PLEASE PUT A SIGN INSIDE THE HOTEL, MME BASSIA!!!!--everything went smoothly. They had our reservation, our room was ready, and we were given our breakfast vouchers. The staff was very friendly and tried to be as helpful as possible throughout our stay.
Our room was on the first floor (second floor American) facing the shopping alley, which was a bit noisy but closed down by 10:30 or so. We had a nice little balcony. The air conditioning was effective, though it dripped condensation and we had to use the trash can to catch the water all night. The room was clean. The mattresses were thin and fairly uncomfortable.
The bathroom is very basic, with no separate shower stall, just a shower handle and a drain in the floor. But it is clean and the water is hot.
We pre-paid for breakfast, but the hotel does not actually offer breakfast. We were given a voucher for Kentrikon at the end of the alley. At first I felt grumbly about this--the point of paying for breakfast in the hotel is that you don't have to leave the premises--but the breakfast was *fantastic.* Get the waffles, you will not be sorry. They serve breakfast until noon so you can roll in quite late. For the day we left very early and hiked the Samaria Gorge, the hotel and restaurant worked together to deliver our breakfast the night before.
The location is excellent. It is inside the tourist quarter, only a few blocks from the bus station, and an easy walk to the restaurants and cafes on the water.
I wish I could give 3 1/2 stars. The reception problem really soured me, as I think you can tell, particularly because it could have been solved by a simple sign saying, "If there is nobody here when you arrive, please visit the kitchen store two doors down." If you have a bad back the beds will not do you any favors. But overall, I do recommend it, particularly for its reasonable price for the location.
- pollyd570 (8/5): Wonderful and convenient - We stayed here for 4 nights and found the rooms charming and the staff warm and helpful. I injured my foot and was on crutches and they made an extra effort to make sure I had everything I needed. We will be back!
