Guest Reviews
- Joyce (10/5): Huge improvement - The room I was in looked recently decorated certainly not in need of a makeover like last year.
However what makes this such a great place to stay is definitely the staff. They are friendly and efficient, the restaurant staff especially appeared to enjoy their work and happily engaged in banter with the diners alongside doing their job well
- Lawrence (8/5): - A bit run down.
- John (10/5): Castle - Just a one night stop, but all was good, would certainly stay here again. Great location for our trip to Galashiels.
- laura (6/5): Mediocre at best! - The room was large but looked quite basic on furnishings, but the bed was very comfortable. The corridor leading to our room smelt of damp which wasn't pleasant. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast & dinner. Breakfast was quite good in my opinion. At dinner the rules weren't explained to us (how to get a drink either from the bar or self service water dispenser). We felt the staff weren't particularly friendly & the company tshirts they were wearing weren't appropriate for the dining room. The 3 course meal wasn't of a very high standard & the pork roast reminded me of a ready meal & the food served wasn't a good quality & the staff didn't seem to care if we were happy or not. The communal areas were nice in presentation but I would not stay again nor recommend this hotel or chain to others. We found the stay to be a disappointment.
- Hayley (8/5): - Need to be clearer about chiefs specials. You have to order in the morning but this is difficult in the first day.dint mind the set menu but it should have the chefs special on the printed nenus.also the fireign visitor's dud nit gave the menu in their language which caused problems. Quiet entertaining for us but not the visitors. The staff looked after us and it was in a great location. The bathroom needed overhall. It was all very clean
- evelyn (8/5): - The staff were really helpful and responded positively to our request for a quiet place to meet in the evening and provided fresh milk in our rooms.
- Jordan (10/5): - We only stayed a short time due to our tight schedule, but we loved every second we did spend here! The property is gorgeous and the hotel is located in such a quiet area with no traffic. It's great for when you want to be close to Edinburgh without being right in downtown. Perfect escape from the city!
- Gail (8/5): - A bit run down, needs updating but clean, good service, friendly staff
- Bernadette (8/5): - All The hotel staff are very helpful and obliging.
They were efficient at meal times in a very full restaurant
The room was tired but very clean.
We had an enjoyable stay.
- David (4/5): Needs a refurb - Desperately needs a refurb and a good clean I stay regular throughout the country and although the service was good the hotel is in desperate need a journey into the 21st century.
- Michael (8/5): - Our double room was huge, but very dirty. The restaurant food was not worth eating.
- Diane (2/5): - Unfortunately we could not check in as we could not stay…When we arrived at the Waverley Castle hotel were told no dogs were allowed. It was pointed out to us that it was in the T&As. As we had stayed there before and enjoyed our stay with the dog we did not feel the need to read the T&As. We did not know that the hotel had changed ownership.. And as suggested to us about leaving dog in car was not an option for us as dog thefts are common and could not risk that. So we decided to look for other accommodation which we found couple of miles away who were very welcoming of us and our dog..
- Thomas (6/5): - Run tap for 5 mins before hot water came through if at all. Noisy motor for frudge cooler running all day.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Shambles - The evening meal and breakfast were both delicious. The hotel experience itself was shabby and shambolic. Got an mail when I was on the way telling me that they had been unable to charge my card and therefore to contact them as my booking was in jeopardy. Arrived and asked WHY they had been trying to charge my card? It was a pay-at-property booking with hotel.com. Their muddled up answer was nonsense.
They then took payment by asking for card details as they had no card machine and said they didn’t give receipts. I insisted and got one e mailed the next day.
They then showed us to a room with a badly stained carpet - and paper thin walls which resulted in a very poor night sleep. We were told breakfast was 730 to 930 and when we went to Reception at 9 am we were told it was finished. When I queried it they checked and apologised for their mistake….
We had breakfast and then checked with Reception that we had to vacate the room by 11 am as it said on our booking.
“No … you have to be out by 10” we were told.
We left and a couple of hours later I received a phone call from them. Phoned back, and they had no idea who or why I had been called….
My overall impression is of a complete shambles. Great hotel if you don’t mind them randomly charging your card, randomly phoning you up for no reason, and randomly change their published times for things.
- Catherine (6/5): - Enjoyed our stay. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful. The room was spotless. The hotel overall however is much in need of an upgrade. The carpets, paintwork etc, very tired. Well situated for walking from the hotel along the river Tweed and further afield.
- Sandra (8/5): - Lovely people and great location. The building is spectacular but a little worn and tired. Can't wait to go back once the renovations are done!
- Patsy (8/5): Enjoyable stay - We couldn’t get WiFi in Room 1 so I asked if we could change rooms which was arranged. The rooms were clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. We were disturbed by loud music at about 8 pm one evening which we thought at first might be a Christmas party but when my husband went to investigate he couldn’t see anything, the barman told him that it was probably coming from the kitchen, it stopped after about an hour. Breakfast was good except for the poached eggs. The staff were friendly. I would definitely return a to this hotel
- Karis (8/5): - Friendly staff, excellent food. Room was a bit basic but did the job however got woken up by noisy at 5am!
- James (8/5): Good value for money hotel - Just returned from a 3 night stay. Hotel is a little dated but clean we had room 4 on the ground floor which was nice and spacious although no central heating instead we had 2 small electric oil filled radiators which only managed to heat room.
Dinning room for breakfast and evening meal had No heating and was freezing. Think every guest commented on it being so cold. Remember you get what you pay for and this hotel is definitely good value for money. I would return but only in the summer months
- Rowan (6/5): - The property was a bit tired needed some work done on it internally. But it served the purpose local to the BGH.
- CLIFFORD (10/5): - We had 4 double rooms for 4 of us working near by for one night. The staff were friendly and everything was clean and comfortable so perfect value.
- Peter (10/5): - Excellent and unique experience
- Derek (6/5): - Bit dated rooms but comfortable for a night away
- Peter (8/5): - Check in
Service
Food
All excellent
- William (8/5): - Very clean and warm bed and pillows not comfortable. But on a whole excelent value for money
- Chris (10/5): Nice stay - Nice place to stay missed front entrance first night as the entrance from the road was not lit
- Fraser (8/5): Ok. - Lovely big hotel in need of refurb. Lovely staff, room was ok. Bits of carpet worn out. Decent price. Great location. Breakfast was small but adequate.
- Eiry (8/5): - Good value for money. Parts of property showing ware. Would be helpful to have light on sign on entrance.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was basic, old fashioned condensation windows, but probably due to age, breakfast was nice, suppose only bad thing was there was no hot water, so could not have a shower, another guest was mentioning this problem. As i was only there 1 night i did not complain
- Jeannie (10/5): - Yvonne the receptionist was very helpful. I also enjoyed Jordan the barman and Michael the waiter who made us most welcome, all in all we had a great stay
- Helen (6/5): - Property impressive however is a bit tired the room we had was clean but dated toilet needed upgraded
- Helen (8/5): - Booked this for my Mum and Niece who were visiting from England. Clean room that was on the ground floor so easily accessible for my Mum who has a disability. The room was very spacious with sufficient heating and shower gel provided in bathroom. Lovely and quiet with dining options if needed. Staff were very helpful and friendly which was great as they made my Mum feel very welcome. Thank you.
- Bev (8/5): - .
- Lesley (8/5): Lovely Stay - Had a lovely comfortable stay! Staff very friendly!!
Had dinner and breakfast and both were very tasty.
- ROBERT (10/5): - very old hotel with lots of history , excellent breakfast , dinner staff was overwhemed on the second night of our stay . apart from that very pleasent stay .
- Omar (4/5): - Poor heating in the room. The shower not strong enough and poor water stream. Not up to my expectations
- ian (8/5): - Great location and perfect for river walks. Not luxurious but a practicle hotel
- WILLIAM D (6/5): Not as good as hoped. - This hotel needs some updating as everything seemed a little "tired" - especially the room.
Whilst the food quality was fine, the offering was not terribly exciting and presentation could have been better.
Range of food at breakfast was OK but not kept replenished quickly enough and there were only tinned tomatoes (Ugh!). It was only on the third morning that we realised that fried eggs were available on request.,
With a couple of exceptions, the staff were not very friendly or communicative.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Pleasant stay - Enjoyed stay at this hotel, Well organised, staff helpful, large rooms with kettle and coffee machine.
- Krzysztof (8/5): - Nice and friendly staff. Good filling around. Love pet friendly approach. Bar and restaurant on site.
- Walter (6/5): - Adequate.
- Michael (8/5): Comfortable stay in Melrose - Nice public areas, rooms needing upgrade, comfortable enough, terrible view to rear from bedroom, excellent breakfast.
- Richard (10/5): - The welcome by staff was excellent and service during our stay was very good.
The property has been neglected over recent years and attention is needed before it is too late. In the bathroom of Room 23 it was not possible to shower as the switch on the taps could not be moved.
Meals were well organised and the menu choices were OK. Table service was excellent.
- Peter (8/5): - Bit dated and windows don’t open and radiator doesn’t work, but it was clean and friendly
- Jack (6/5): - Bedroom was right beside a noisy late night function
- Steve (10/5): Comfortable base - A comfortable location for touring the area.
- Marc (8/5): - The check-in was friendly and the room was clean and comfortable without being plush. Breakfast was fine, but I would have liked a selection of eggs, rather than just scrambled.
The staff were friendly and seemed happy.
In general the hotel was reasonable value for the money.
It could do with a bit of freshening up, especially with the carpets.
Only complaint was that we would gave liked to check-in an hour early, but there would have been a £10 charge.
- Marian (8/5): - The shower pressure was weak. Otherwise the hotel was just as we expected.
- Arthur (8/5): - Quick, easy, friendly check in & out. Yeah, the decor could be refreshed/revamped, but the room was clean comfortable and functional.
- Bien (6/5): - I like the gardens. The property is tired and needs a renovation. Wallpaper is peeling off the wall. The shower drain is clogged and I have to wait 10 minutes to clear the dirty water and wash my feet with clean water again before i step out of the shower.
- Gaby (10/5): - We had a great stay there
- John (6/5): - The hotel is tired and in need of some tlc.
However, the age of the building and the number of rooms would make this difficult.
It was quite good enough for a one night stay.
- Jon (10/5): Great characterful hotel - Great place to stay, yes a few areas are a little run down and tired but other areas are lovely and charismatic which I will take any day over a bland big chain run hotel, food is good and the staff are brilliant ,very quiet and lots of places to sit and relax with a drink.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great value hotel for a long weekend - A great weekend spent at the Waverley Castle Hotel. Fantastic location for Kelso, Melrose, Galashiels, Peebles and more. Great breakfast and friendly staff.
- JONATHAN (8/5): - Good
- Russell (10/5): - Thank you for our stay. We found the hotel clean, pet friendly and convenient.
- Andrew (10/5): - Great for travelling stop off
- Malcolm (10/5): Well worth the price, very comfortable. - Ideal location, dated but comfortable hotel, and good price for the situation.
- Helga (10/5): - Staff is very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is nice and quiet and the breakfast is good. Parking is easy but the hotel is also right on the Tweed Cycle route which makes it easily accessible by bike also. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Ian (8/5): - The Waverley Castle exceeded my (fairly low) expectations, as the room was clean, quiet, comfortable and contained everything I needed. The wifi worked well; the shower was fine if slightly lacking in pressure, and the heated towel rail was a boon. The hotel itself contains long winding corridors that look a little shabby. Reception was friendly and efficient. I paid extra for the breakfast which was not really worth it, as I'm largely veggie, and there were only scrambled eggs, tinned tomatoes, baked beans and potato cakes. However there were four possible cereals, juices, plain yoghurt and small bowls of fresh fruit salad, as well as toast (and prepackaged jam portions). The area is quiet, with the hotel set well back from the old main road, my room was on the side with a good view of a rather scruffy lawn (and plenty of rabbits).
- Brian (10/5): - Friendly efficient service in a fantastic setting. Property was in good condition with clean airy rooms.
Dining was cramped with tables set very close together but this turned out not to be a problem for us as the adjacent tables weren't occupied when we were eating dinner or breakfast.
- Richard (8/5): - Very helpful and friendly staff.Building a bit tired and some inexpensive tlc needed(same colour ballroom lights)window cleaning.
- David (8/5): Value for money. - Wonder looking building from the outside, unfortunately the interior needs a little work. The room was clean and adequate for our needs but the shower cubicle was so small that it was difficult to turn around in it, the shower adjustment stuck out about 6” from the wall making it even smaller. The staff were all really helpful and a credit to the hotel. Breakfast was buffet style,
The Games room was in a right mess, the pool table was uneven and the cloth needs replaced, the dart board and surrounding wall was another area that needs a major overhaul, the TV didn’t work and the games were very dated. The walls were riddled with dart holes. Needs to be shut down and revamped. Some of the stair carpets are thread bare on the edges.
A good place to base yourself for sightseeing in the area.
Would I stay there again?
Yes I would as it offers value for money.
- Kenneth (6/5): - A bit dated young staff one night stay very warm heating on in July??
- Vicki (10/5): - From arriving at the hotel until leaving the hotel the staff were amazing made our stay very welcoming always someone to help if needed the room was amazing very clean & comfortable would definitely recommend anyone stay here the price was fantastic the size of the room was very a generous size the scenery around was fantastic I would again definitely recommend
- Alan (6/5): - Hotel needs an update. Room was drab(not welcoming at all), marks on walls, woodwork chipped, dusty and ripped chairs. Bedding/towels were clean though and room was large with comfortable bed. No privacy screens on windows on the ground floor room. Wouldn't go back-was glad it was just 1 night!
- Ross (6/5): - .
- Annette (6/5): - It has to be accepted that this is an old building and large, without a huge team to maintain it, it is only reasonable that it is a little tired and worn looking in many areas. The dining room and bar have obviously been renovated and are both pleasant to spend time in. The good was alright, breakfast was enjoyable and plentiful. We ate in the restaurant two nights out of our stay. I couldn't rave about it, but it was ok. Found it strange though, that an average piece of sticky toffee pudding was served on a large plate, with no accompaniment. It did taste good though. Some cream or ice-cream would have been nice. The staff were pleasant enough, mostly consisting of young people, and were helpful enough. Would we return? This was our second visit, having been many years ago, but I'm not sure we would rush back.
- Donna (8/5): - Just back after 2 nights stay.
Room comfortable however the bathroom is very dated and in need of refinishing.
Had the 3course dinner both nights. Food was delicious but small portions.
Very dog friendly.
Lovely walk to the river at the back of the hotel.
Overall we had a good stay and hope to be back soon.
- John (6/5): - Cold shower!
- Elisha (8/5): - A lovely night stay in a twin room, with an extremely comfortable bed. Wouldn’t recommend to a perfectionist who likes everything prim and proper as areas of the hotel are a bit rough round the edges, however did not affect my stay one bit. Staff were warm and welcoming and the steak was absolutely beautiful. Breakfast included a great selection, both hot and cold. The restaurant settings were maintained to a high standard and very well staffed during my stay. The bar had a great selection of drinks. It was so convenient to not even need to leave the hotel. The only shame was that last orders was called at 9:45pm when it’s advertised to remain open until 12am. Either way, a lovely stay had and would definitely return again. Thank you!
- Jordan (2/5): - Manager is very abusive I told him that the room he gave us was dirty and he proceeded to shout at me. I told him to stop shouting or I’m going to start recording. I have our in complaint to Expedia. Travelled 6 hours to stay here and I’ve never regretted a break as much as this. No veggie options in the breakfasts terrible hotel I would really stay away
- Noreen (4/5): - This looks like a lovely building from the outside but the hotel needs a very big update inside. Our room had such an uneven floor that we were afraid we would fall during the night.
In the restaurant the tables were about one inch apart which made us so uncomfortable we only ate one meal there.
- Claire (8/5): - Lovely old building.
Clean.
Friendly staff
A bit tired in places.
Decent breakfast
- June (8/5): - It was clean staff where cheery would go again a bit to warm on level 1
- Paul (8/5): - Hotel room was small but was sufficient
Could do with refurbishing the rooms
- Edina (10/5): Consistent - Great and consistent, especially front of reception,restaurant/catering team and the cleaning services.
Well done
- Raphaela (8/5): - Very nice hotel with friendly staff! View is amazing!
- Susan (10/5): - This is a great “no -frills” hotel, a friendly, clean, tidy place, with access to many wonderful places to visit .
A train station almost right next door , if you fancy a day in Edinburgh without your car. Lots of walks and beautiful little Border towns. Staff are friendly, attentive, and food is good for the price. Have stayed many times, and will do so again in the future.
- Sue (4/5): - I cannot recommend this property. The general condition was very tired. The bathroom basin was badly cracked, the bedroom ceiling was festooned with cobwebs, the shower was ineffectual, the view from the window (Room 305) was depressing.
- Tracey (6/5): Stopover - Had to wait in an unattended ballroom for breakfast because we had the dog, took ages for staff to come, had to walk round the corridors to bring breakfast back. The radiators in the corridors were so hot it was boiling. Its a shame this place could be great and as its up for sale hopefully someone will buy it and make it nice inside again.
- Susan (4/5): - Nice grounds. Reception on arrival helpful. Very dated/shabby interior. Breakfast staff asked me to wait outside as I was 3 minutes early, then when I entered they sat me at a table with another gentleman (I was a solo traveler) in a dining room with approximately 100 empty tables, moving me from the table I had chosen. Felt very uncomfortable. Ate and ran!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Castle under siege. - Comfortable stay in hotel that is within easy walking distance of Melrose centre (Abbey/shops/parks/sports grounds) and scenic walks beside River Tweed. Meals were reasonably priced and pleasant enough, although the number of staff (many obviously not too experienced) was not sufficient to give good service to the high number of weekend clients - leading to unfair pressure on the established crew. Excellent all round entertainer on Saturday evening.
- Jane (10/5): Great hotel - Beautiful hotel in gorgeous setting. Couldn't fault a thing
- RS (10/5): Waverley Castle - It's a great location. 10 min walk to town.
We were there for the 7s. Was good to have the choice of being in the brilliant choas and to get away it in the centre of town.
Our room. 306 was massive. Well done out. Breaky magic for the price.
Pizza.on Sat night was a life saver.
I'd got back definitely.
- Barry (4/5): Disappointing - Disappointing old hotel. Terrible shower. Food was also disappointing.
- Glenn (8/5): great value - service was fantastic. Some areas are a little tired but overall it was very good. Particularly good value too.
- Duncan (6/5): - dated
- Verified traveler (10/5): Borders trip - Have stayed here numerous times when going to see family in the Scottish Borders. Great little hotel , no frills, what you see is what you get . Super staff, friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit.
- William (8/5): Value hotel - Basic room but clean and functional
Good good in evening and at breakfast
Good for price
- Dianne E (6/5): Not the best stay but not expensive either - I'm guessing you get what you pay for a comfortable bed and food in the evening was lovely, breakfast was non descript the food was overcooked, the service was lacking ( none of this have you stopped here before, or can i explain the breakfast we were simple sent to a table) my main issue was the room didn't appeared to have been checked before we booked in, we had cobwebs, a wardrobe with pealing veneer and a bin in the bathroom which hadn't been emptied. We were also outside some time because of a (Thankfully) false alarm with the Fire Alarms, when the alarm went off we evacuated into the car park and waited patiently, not one member of staff came to see who was outside, no one took control until a gentleman arrived by car went quickly into the building - I'm sure that goes against Fire safety precautions, a short while later he emerged to say it was a false alarm and asked for patience while staff checked the whole building again as the alarm would not reset, We were allowed back in with the alarm silenced but not reset, thankful this was sorted within 30 minutes or so, if it hadn't been i would not have stopped as i couldn't have slept knowing there was a faulty fire alarm.
- Ian (6/5): Give it a miss. - Not great, mainly the condition and cleanliness of carpets, the amount of dust/ cobwebs and mould.
- Elaine (6/5): - Staff were friendly and helpful. Property need updating.
- Dr JI (8/5): Adequate - This is an old building with much charm but it looks tired and needs refreshed. My room
was cosy and plenty of hot water but the large stately dining room was fairly chilly. Staff were friendly and helpful.
- Gill (2/5): - 2 night stay as helping parent move house. Superficially, the single room looked ok when I arrived after an 3 hour drive. Unfortunately I had no sleep due to the mattress having a protruding bedspring right in the middle. As it was very late, I suffered until 3am when I gave in, wrapped the duvet around me and tried to sleep on the floor. I got about 4 hours broken sleep. There was also no running hot water from the shower and sink. I reported it to the cleaner next morning and I was told the mattress would be replaced. It wasn’t. An extra duvet was just put on top of the mattress and it was very hot to lie on. Again, I had to go down to reception after stripping and getting into a cold shower, dressing again and report no hot water. The receptionist came upstairs and tried the shower. I was told there was a problem with the pipes next door. Eventually, he managed to get the hot water working. I cannot see how this hotel will survive if they cannot get the basics right. Painful mattress and a cold shower and I paid £79 for the privilege? I should receive compensation! Absolutely dreadful. Do not go there. You have been warned.
- Martin (8/5): - Stayed one night on business. Was pleasantly adequate for the purpose. Room was cold as was the water reaching the bath & shower. Food was really tasty and worth the money
- Sharon (10/5): - Lovely hotel very friendly .
Nothing too much trouble.
Beds and food very nice .
- PETER (10/5): - We had a Superior room which was great, large room, big bay windows on top floor. The room had been recently refurbished and was well equipped. We didn’t use the restaurant. Staff very friendly and helpful. Looking forward to going again!
- Padraig (8/5): - The hotel room was a little too warm at night. However, the staff were very welcoming.
- P (2/5): Nice building but our room was unacceptable - Didn’t stay. Saw the room and left due to the condition. As no other suitable rooms available we had no option but to leave.
