Guest Reviews
- Bhavik (8/5): - The hotel itself was the personal residence of the governor, and has been very well maintained and restored. You did feel like you were in the British countryside. The team were helpful and extremely attentive. The location was quiet and serene, next to the Hill Club and close to the Grand Hotel, and walking distance to Victoria Park and Lake Gregory.
- Kim (8/5): Recommend - Loads of old world charm set in lovely gardens. Hot water was slow.
- Ishrat (10/5): Living in the history - Living in the history.
- Ellie (10/5): Gorgeous Bungalow - Beautiful Bungalow. The grounds were impeccable. Fantastic tree. Also fantastic location, if you want to visit The Grand Hotel for a meal, or high tea, which is next door Nil
- Frank G (9/5): - Good overall. Well located next to prime attraction. Polite and friendly staff. Owner doing his best to make the stay comfortable. Good food and breakfast.

- minyan (10/5): - This is a very cozy and nice hotel during our trip. The bungalow sits on the gentle hill slope, with nice lawn and garden. The building has a long history, yet it is renovated like a new one while keeping all its historical feels. Basically it makes you feel like staying in a authentic and neat English garden. The living room and dining room is all very cozy, and also our bedroom. And importantly, the staff there are really nice. They are so warm and welcoming, always had a smile on their face. So it's really relaxing to stay there.

- Mathijs9208 (8/5): - + lovely staff who made us a breakfast package.
+ the cottage is beautiful
+ the size of the room and the bed - Bathroom outdated and a bit mold.
- Jeffrey (8/5): - Wat een prachtige accommodatie op een prachtige locatie. Heel bijzonder om in zo'n historisch gebouw te slapen. Slaapkamer was erg fijn, mooi onderhouden en het bed erg comfortabel. Ontbijt was erg goed, erg uitgebreid.

- nanthini (10/5): We went around 2.00 pm to check in . I fell in love with the old charm and the cottage look garden. Staff was welcoming - Location , ambience and the service. It is beautiful cottage . Old English style . Very relaxing Nothing
- nanthini (9/5): Enjoyable snd relaxing place . Beautiful place . Breakfast is simple but delicious food. - Very nice property . Maintaining the old charm . Beautiful garden. Matching decor to highlight the property age.
Staff are friendly and accommodating. Nothing

- Leon (7/5): Good - The flair of and old English cottage makes you feel like nobles from another century. Super friendly stuff that prepared a big breakfast The bath was moldy and the fan/ac in there made a sound that didn’t go off, even with turning off the light.
- Victoria (10/5): Well worth a visit, would not hesitate to recommend this hotel - Fantastic property with excellent staff in a lovely location. Our room was spotless and looked out over the manicured lawns. Nothing
- Karar (10/5): Location , staff, environment - Excellent
- Deborah (10/5): Charming historic cottage with beautiful flower garden in quiet part of town -
- Beth (10/5): Wonderfully welcoming old world charm! - We had an amazing time at Hill Cottage. It is a real hidden gem. Nestled behind the Grand Hotel, it gives the same old world charm but with a wonderfully personal touch. The team really seem to enjoy what they do and want to give everyone the best experience possible. Our son particularly loved the lively badminton matches with the staff who went out of their way to make him feel like family. He was so sad to leave. If you are looking for somewhere to stay that offers warm welcomes, big smiles and a touch of old world charm, Hill Cottage is for you!
- Anusha (7/5): Good - We stayed at hill cottage mid december. The location and the cottage is lovely, the manager was very courteous. The room we were first assigned didn't quite match the images in the booking description but we were the last two arrive on a day it was full booked, so we were given a better room the next day once it was available. However, the geyser in that room wasn't working and we went back and forth from the first room, so it felt a bit underwhelming experience wise even though the cottage as well as the location were good. There was also another big group, the dinning area is small and the other group was loud and there were kids running around. Not the the hotel's fault at all but it was noisy and you had to put up with it.
Breakfast was a decent spread, however they could at least use a hotbox for items that are freshly made. It is a cold place and leaving it open, things go cold rather quickly.
You also need to inform them well in advance for dinner, like in the morning I guess. We weren't informed of this beforehand and dinner on the second night really fell short.
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely charming place with friendly helpful staff. We stayed with our 15 month old and the cot and high chair were great. Nice location to just walk to everything.
- Roslyn (8/5): Very good - Lovely spacious rooms. A small property, away from busy areas. Our room was very close to lounge area, so very noisy for an early night when rising at 4.30am.
- Udi (8/5): Very good - Located in a nice area close enough to the center
Nice rooms , clean and organised
Friendly Team willing to assist Take minutes till Hot water arrived
Shower isn’t clean enough
The team make Barbique party inside lobby so all room became smoke
- Michael (9/5): Peaceful and well taken care of. - It’s a small personal hotel, the breakfast was especially delicious and copious. If other hotel guests are quiet, it is very quiet, but if other guests are loud, you hear them.
- Elizabeth (5/5): Passable -
- Renola (10/5): Exceptional - The property is beautifully maintained and still feels original even after it had been renovated. The location is very calm, the rooms are spacious and offer everything you need.
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful property with spacious, clean and comfortable room and bathroom. Located very near to other hotels offering high tea. Breakfast buffet was delicious. Staff were very friendly and happy to help with any queries.
- Dace (10/5): I wish music was played during breakfast -
- Pip (8/5): Beautiful rooms in a beautiful building! - Beautiful building in a beautiful setting! The gardens are very pretty. Staff were super helpful and breakfast was delicious. Our room was much bigger than expected with a super comfortable bed! Just that the walls/doors are a little thin so you can hear in the hallway etc. but really not a big deal!
- Anthony (9/5): Superb -
- Leslie (10/5): Family friendly and with great guest interaction. - Gobi the chef cooked the best chicken curry and a separate potato curry for breakfast. which was spectacular.
Also eggs, bacon and sausages were made available and everything was deliciously fresh and prepared to perfection.
- Vladimir (9/5): Great relaxing and restfull - The location was just great. Close to centre and park, beautifull scenery arouns Small tv
- Kitty (8/5): Lovely property and staff - Lovely heritage building. Friendly helpful staff. Good breakfast. Location close to centre, free parking. The front door was constantly left open and it's cold in this town!
- Jessica (9/5): Great place for a short trip - It’s historic and is close to town The floor was dusty and it’s a little expensive.
- Marko (9/5): An overall great stay with good breakfast and comfortable clean living space. Great location. - Very clean and nice surroundings/location. Great internet. Peaceful. Attentive host and great breakfast for the price. Other than breakfast the price of the food.
- Hacılar (9/5): Superb -
- Cyril (10/5): Cute little cottage, comfortable , great and friendly staff! - Cute little cottage, comfortable, great and friendly staff! N/a
- Liran (9/5): Superb - The bed wasn't that comfy for me BUT it is personal !
- Dhanushka (9/5): Superb - It was a wonderful stay and the staff were super friendly
Superb location and the place had colonial vibes Absolutely nothing to dislike
- Jessica (7/5): A good night’s sleep! - A very comfy and big bed. No glasses for water, I had to use a tea cup. The wifi wasn’t brilliant.
- Natasha (9/5): Very conformable stay - Lovely property with very large comfortable rooms and extremely friendly staff. They kindly prepared a take away breakfast for our early start the day we went to Horton Plains. Quite expensive
- Yoram (10/5): perfect - all perfect nothing
- Nawel (8/5): It’s ok to stop doff a night on this region - The style and the architecture, is different and belongs to the British style, the rooms are specious, even the bathroom. Big beds The rooms are a bit smelly, and the isolation is very bad you can hear everything
- Anne (5/5): Passable - The hotel is well-located in the city center, making it easy to access services and restaurants. The outdoors are pleasant, and the staff is friendly. The room is clean, and the bed is comfortable. The rooms are unfortunately very noisy, ours was located near the reception and there were no noise rules applied to customers. The staff lacked of professionalism when it came to responding to complaints (we raised three times that other customers were making loud noise late in the evening, drinking and smoking indoors that we could smell from our room). Nighttime noise disturbances are frequent, and the bathroom shows signs of mold.
For the price, there are much better options available.
- Susan (9/5): Lovely historic stay - recommended! - Great location in the canter of town, beautiful building with long history, gardens beautiful, friendly helpful staff Our rooms were at the back with no view - but only a minor quibble
- Daniel (9/5): Superb - Great location, comfortable bed, friendly welcome, nice gardens. Go for high tea and hangout at the Grand Hotel right next door for a room twice the size and half the price. Reception area is a little awkward with large advertisements for activties to do in Colombo.
- Syed (10/5): Exceptional - It was great experience staying in Hill Cottage. Location was great. Staff were exceptionally welcoming and very caring. Breakfast was superb.
- Mahmood (8/5): Very good -
- Daniele (9/5): Superb -
- Barton (10/5): The Cosy Cottage - The amazing welcoming staff from the Manger down. Nothing is too much trouble including taking you to the Doctor and arranging medicine. Its like a home away from home. I had to ask for a correct adaptor plug and this was provided on 5m
- Alwis (6/5): Pleasant - Very nice calm environment
- Hiran (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location Nothing
- Kanimolly (8/5): Very good - The staff, the laid back surrounding Loud noise at night (other tourists)
- Eapen (9/5): Superb -
- Hadi (10/5): awesome - it was awesome ❤️ thank you , we stayed there 3 night with my family, all the room were clean and the staff were kindly 😍
- Ushnik (9/5): Superb - Excellent colonial style property with huge lawn.
Room was spacious, well equipped and clean.
Restaurant was very good. None
- Marion (8/5): Traditional English style house - Easy walk into town. Comfortable room and accommodating staff. Pretty surroundings and a good night's sleep. Couple of power cuts, easily resolved. There wasn't really a front desk as such so we didn't arrange breakfast (included) and went out instead. Staff were friendly enough, just not very visible.
- Sandra (7/5): Nice hotel in a good location - Good location, nice breakfast & very spacious rooms. We booked a room that said to have a minibar, but there wasn’t one. No daily housekeeping - I assume you can ask for it but for the higher price category I expected it or at least for them to offer.
- Mordechai (9/5): Very nice cottage in the Tea Hills of Nuwara Eliya - In the midlle of the tea fields hills of Nuwara Eliya very nice cottage very near to The Grand Hotel, where you can have the best Ceilon tea in a beautiful surrounding.
- Muhammed (9/5): Amazing stay. Would love to visit again - The location, architecture of the building, the well kept lawns. Improve the variety on the breakfast
- Aditya (9/5): Totally worth it. - The location of the property is good. The property itself is too good. Very helpful staffs especially Siva. The breakfast spread is also very nice. They did pack our breakfast for the second day that too very early in the morning( we had a train at 6 am to catch).
- Patrick (10/5): Beautiful stay - Amazing cottage set above Nuwara Eliya
Incredibly friendly staff who regularly served us tea in the immaculate gardens
Beautiful room maintaining the original decor style that would have been present in this cottage
Easy to walk into the centre of Nuwara Eliya
- Jan-maree (10/5): Excellent - Everything was fantastic
Highly recommend
Staff were so so accomodating
Excellent
- Salma (10/5): comfortable stay with the best location. - Big, comfortable room. Nice location.
- Ludovic (9/5): Friendly cottage and staff, great location - It is a very cute cottage in a beautiful garden. Our room was very spacious and the bed was good. Breakfast buffet had all we needed and they offer eggs as we please. The staff is very friendly and help with everything you ask them. The location is also great. It’s next to the Grand Hotel (which is great for its bars and restaurants) and close to Victoria Park, the Post Office and the Golf Club. The bathroom can use some small maintenance to fight the aging it has undergone.
- Chris (8/5): Stayed here before and would stay again. Great location - Lovely old colonial building. Comfortable rooms and good dining room. Lovely gardens Nothing
- Miriam (9/5): Great place to stay, excellent location, cosy - Loved the quaintness of the Hill Cottage, still had a heritage feel to it but on a small scale. Loved the decor in the common area and rooms were spacious. Bed was comfortable and huge in size. Location was excellent, walking distance to The Grand (and its great restaurants), Hill Club (right next door) and the town centre. Breakfast was good but if you were staying there for more than a day, variety is a bit limited. Kettle with teabags and water provided in the room. The staff are great, very friendly and helpful. At night, the street leading to the cottage is pitch black so feels a bit unsafe, some street lights or lamps at the gate entrance would help! could offer a Tuk tuk for guests arriving at the train station. Wifi had really dodgy connection in my room. Had to keep going to the communal area to reconnect. The lighting in the room was a bit inconvenient e.g no button to switch off light by bed (except a switch that turns off all the power which is not helpful if you want to charge your phone), There is some noise early morning (as breakfast is being prepared), esp if your room is by reception as mine was.
- Michael (9/5): Excellent choice in a great location - This is a lovely place right next to the Hill Club. A terrific location and a lovely room. More English than England. A big room with a comfortable bed. A good breakfast and lovely staff. The shower pressure was very poor - especially the hot water. But it was OK once it got going.
They do not service the rooms. We stayed three nights and not one refresh. Why? Your guess is as good as mine...
- Serena (8/5): Very good - The property is very pretty, great location in a very quite area. Only 10 minutes walk distance from the center.
- Rozana (10/5): It was a one night stay and we really wanted to stay in this beautiful home for much longer. This location will definite - Frank and other staff were very attentive and made us welcome. Home from home.
Thank you Frank.
- Saminda (9/5): cozy and comfortable, great location. Typical colonial bungalow with garden. -
- Steaderz (9/5): Beautiful authentic colonial house - Beautiful old colonial building repurposed into hotel rooms. Rooms exceptionally large, lovely authentic furniture with ‘the’ most comfortable bed! We arrived earlier than planned so had a temporary room for the first night - there was a hot water problem BUT the designated room after that night far more than made up for the first evening! Outstanding staff who were very attentive and most helpful.
- Reddy (9/5): Superb - Staff was attentive. Value for money. Breakfast was good. Good views
- Helan (7/5): Good -
- Ei (8/5): Considering the location and price this is a great accommodation. - The location was good, and the ambience of the place was amazing. There were not a hair drier provided, and although they gave me one when I asked for it the drier wasn’t working properly; only cold air came out. As the weather is chilly in the area I wish I could dry my hair.
- Nd (9/5): Superb -
- Nicola (9/5): Well Worth A Stay - The location was excellent, quiet but only a few minutes walk to the main area. The 200 year old building and gardens are beautiful and well kept. Very comfortable bed, huge bedroom with nice furnishings. Friendly staff. Good breakfast options. The bathroom could do with a little bit of TLC and better ventilation as it made it difficult for drying towels.
- David (9/5): Lovely property in a great location - Lovely property in a great location just a short walk from the centre. Lovely garden and very helpful staff. Rooms are a good size and have very comfy beds. There is little soundproofing so we could hear noise from other rooms on the corridor that seemed to be amplified by the corridor, but not a big problem.
- Liudmila (10/5): Old-world charm - Unique building in colonial style in a very good location (center of the city is very close, however the hotel is surrounded by nature and very quiet).
Staff is friendly.
- Fathima (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moumita (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mohammed (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jj (8/5): Great staff, lovely welcome, friendly, comfortable and great location - Great!! Bathroom was a little tored
- Elena (8/5): Very good -
- Sujeewa (10/5): Exceptional - It was an absolute service from the start to finish. Especially Very friendly staff, comfortable rooms, calm and quiet atmosphere, walkable distance from town center. Nothing.
- Prasad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (8/5): Very good - Location is superb, quiet and far from busy traffic. Amazing garden. Historic building with charme. Staff is very friendly and attentive. No hot water during the night. Bedside switches actually switch off the entire room (including all plugs). Floor was dusty and had hairs from previous occupants.
- Aleksandra (9/5): Superb - It’s a gorgeous old cottage with so much charm and and beautiful garden. The staff was very nice and happy to make an extra step to help. As it’s an old building, there were some problems with hot water and it can get cold in the room (but it was rainy and very cold outside during my stay). Very good breakfast. Overall I loved this place, there was something magical there.
- Jinger (10/5): Exceptional - Cute place, I love it!
- Chen (10/5): Exceptional - great british style cottage
big room
comfortable bed it is very cold at night, even it is July😰
- Ulrike (9/5): Superb - Marvellous garden and villa in old english style behind golf court next to the faboulous Grand Hotel .
Very nice staff, good breakfast and nicely decorated rooms. we like the old style and enjoyed the spacious room and the quiet surrounding.
- Sandra (6/5): A nostalgic charm and great location - need to sort out the hot water situation... Please...!! - Great location and nice authentic place to stay, the homeliness was nostalgic and charming
Breakfast was OK, nice that we had in the garden as the sun came out
Convenient for great walks, The Hill Club and the Grand Hotel The nostalgic charm was blighted by NO hot water in the bathroom - on a rainy cold day/evening - it was very hard to enjoy a freezing cold shower...
Additional breakfast offer (eggs etc) would be good to display on the buffet table
- Sajidh (10/5): Excellent property with a lovely garden and landscaping that will help you relax and unwind. - The property, location, garden and landscaping, the service and ease of checking in
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
