Guest Reviews
- François (9/5): - Le service, la propreté de la chambre, le confort du lit, la gentillesse et l'amabilité de notre hôte.
- Donna (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed our stay here. The host was very accommodating and we had some very nice conversations. Thankfully she spoke english. Breakfast was excellent and with variety during the week. The neighbourhood is quiet and the neighbours friendly. Between the hotel and the city center there is a local market to walk through. We enjoy this Couleur Local. In the evening the market is nearly empty and it looks scruffy but not deserted. A lot of taxis drive through this street. My husband and I felt safe and the host emphasised it was safe. The room has a comfortable bed. And best of all, a fridge. There is no hot water but saying that the shower was luke warm with good water pressure. In short a good price quality and welcoming place.
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- R (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kimberly (8/5): Great spot for a few days. The hosts are lovely. - The breakfast was delicious and abundant. 10 - 15 minute walk to the centre which was a very nice way to explore the city. Not much anyone could do but you needed bug stray outside at all times. The roosters start their chorus quite early which could be bothersome if you’re a light sleeper. A refrigerator would have been helpful.
- Paul (9/5): Superb - We really enjoyed our stay and stayed an extra night. The room was comfortable and the staff lovely. The rooms are motel/chalet type rooms in the garden and we enjoyed having breakfast looking over the garden. The AC and fan worked very well. We were able to park our motorcycle inside. Thank you. This was absolutely not a problem for us as we have become used to only having cold water in the bathroom. Truth is that you need it! It is a 15 minute walk into the central square. It is a very lively and entertaining walk past the Mercado - we loved it; others might want something more sanitised.
- Danfer (8/5): Very good -
- Zeledon (9/5): Superb - She was so friendly and a really nice person!
Made me feel like home!
- Catherine (9/5): This family run hotel added so much to our wonderful experience of Granada Nicaragua. We will stay there again. - Cool and comfortable. This hotel has the most friendly staff I’ve ever seen. They were extremely accommodating and kind. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and each room had a refrigerator.
- Abdielhiram (10/5): Great place in Granada. - Very Personal attention and very courteous lady who took care of us.
- torillv811 (2/5): Avoid Bed bugs - Bed bugs, chickens and dogs barking all night. Will not recommend this hotel. The area is not a nice area, trash everywhere in the streets. The owner and staff were nice, but the bedbugs hot worse, we had to getsom cortizon from the farmacy to get the swelling and eased the itching.
- Chelsea (10/5): Exceptional - The staff was wonderful and we had a great time staying with these lovely ladies! The AC unit in the room was awesome and with a short walk to town kept us out of the hustle and bustle of Granada.
- Patrick (9/5): Very nice hotel in the middle of a local neighborhood. Very friendly people - Perfecto
- Janie (10/5): Good value, clean, airy room, garden courtyard, delicious breakfast. - Clean rooms with high ceiling, good air on and fan. Comfy bed, good shower. The courtyard was a lovely green oasis, and the breakfast was delicious - then eggs are very fresh, laid by their in-site chickens! The hotel is funded by Spanish and Dutch groups to support women working. Secure parking. Can’t think of a thing!
- Torill (4/5): Bed begs - Terrible area, felt very unsafe and trash everywhere. The breakfast is ok, but the rest is just a bad experuence. My bed was fukk of bedbuds or flees. I had big bites all over my body. The chickens and dogs barking all night. Will not recommend. Bed bugs!
- Aimee (5/5): Location felt unsafe with very loud chickens from 5am - The room itself was nice and the bed was comfy The location. I can't stress enough how unsafe we felt on our walk to/from the hostel. It was our second place in Granada so we were used to the city but this was WAY out of the tourist zone. We thought it was only a few streets back so would be fine but I really wouldn't recommend staying here, particularly as a solo traveler. As we walked from our first other hostel, we had to change our route as one of the roads said you could walk down but it was actually a dead end. When we tried to reroute a local firmly told us that we should not go that way, which felt because it wasn't safe and we didn't want to take the risk. We then re-routed a third time through the local market and felt incredibly unsafe and uneasy about having all our valuables on us and phones out as it was like a maze to navigate.
It may be safer to walk down Calle Atravesada but we didn't risk it. Taxi is $1 per person to central so an alternative but we'd read that there are lots of unauthorised taxis that were unsafe so be warned.
They have chickens and they are loud from 5am so that's fun.
- Duncanwierman (9/5): Excellent Stay, Safe Area, Good Value and Breakfast - Host was great. Property is an 9 minute walk to town. Very safe. Good Breakfast. The bed could have been softer, but thats not a biggy. I think there not being any hot water is just how it is in Nicaraqua. It gets hot outside, so probably should enjoy a warm shower anyway.
- Mary L (4/5): - We did not stay, as the neighbourhood was in a slum, very unsafe
- Peter (8/5): Very good - Super nice accomodation. Little garden paradise in the city. Comfortable bed. Very nice host.
- Nick (8/5): Very good - The hostess/owner of the hotel.
- Flubber (10/5): Exceptional place with great staff - Our stay was outstanding! Great staff, they made us feel at home right away. My partner was a bit ill when we were there and they took excellent care of everything and were flexible with breakfast- and check-out times. The breakfast was exceptional including fruits and a traditional dish that varied every day. The room itself was spacious with an extra bed, AC, and bathroom. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood just outside of the city, a 10 minute walk to the city center. The bus station for busses to Rivas is just two blocks away.
- Egbert (9/5): Nice, super friendly people, great experience! - Very nice owner/manager lady and staff! Good breakfast, OK mattresses, somewhat noisy A/C but effective ceiling fan, parking on premises, nice building and garden
- Tristan (10/5): Excellent place near town - Lovely host and incredibly clean. Breakfast was also delicious. Nothing
- Jamila (5/5): Friendly Hosts. NOT the Best Location. - Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Cold shower. The neighborhood is not the best. It's far from the main Square of downtown Granada.
- Guy (9/5): Superb -
- Ollie (1/5): WARNING: DO NOT STAY HERE. SCAM AND SAFETY CONCERNS - Breakfast was nice. The owner is deliberately tricking you. It states states that AC in included. It is not, she charges $9 extra per night. We contacted booking.com and they confirmed that she cannot charge us more than the agreed price but she did anyway. We thought maybe it is a mistake and she could change the advert but she openly admitted to us that she knows it says AC included but it brings customers in and she has run the stats to say that most people either don't notice or aren't able to cancel because there is no option. If you are reading this after you have booked, if you contact booking.com, they can arrange to cancel your booking for free. She is dishonest and makes no attempt to hide what she is doing. Shameless and it soured our whole experience.
There are other reviews confirming this also.
Basically she is using the Genius programme to hook you in and then adds the price on through AC, even though it states that it is included. We received a 27% discount because we are Genius level 3, then she added 30% on to our bill for AC despite booking contact her saying she cannot do that.
If for some reason you do stay here, DO NOT WALK HOME AT NIGHT. It is 25 minute walk from centre, south of the city in a local neighbourhood and we were very nearly attacked one night by a man. Thankfully we managed to get in a taxi quickly and get away but don't put yourself in danger. There are no street lights after a certain point and it's sketchy.
It's also dirty and full of cobwebs.
There are better and cheaper places that are in a safer location.
- Victor (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing staff who really went out their way to help you! Nice Nicaraguan breakfast and comfortable room. A little way from the city center and the WiFi didn't work in my room.
- Chad (10/5): Great value, great staff, would stay again - Beautiful property, amazing and helpful staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds not a huge fan of the roosters that live there crowing in the morning, haha
- Silvia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Edmundas (10/5): Exceptional - very friendly host, great value
- Anni (9/5): Feels like home - This hotel has a homey vibe- the hosts live on site. I was received with a glass of cold lemonade and pastries. The room was nice, comfy bed. The host was incredibly kind and helpful- my backpack broke and she helped me sowing it. Incredible kindness and they were always happy to help. The breakfast was wonderful. The only downside is the location. Although it's 10 minutes walking from the centre, it goes deeper into the local neighbourhood and I was worried of walking alone at night. If you're with someone you should be fine. If it wasn't for this, I would give a rating of 10.
- Kenneth (1/5): Bad -
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were brilliant, so friendly, couldn't help enough and their advice was invaluable. Great breakfast too. Cold shower but ok, not freezing.
- Gizela (6/5): It is a good place to stay for the price. But a bit far from the main plaza - Breakfast was EXCELLENT.
The host (when we checked in) and next morning hostess and waitress were wonderfully friendly. We stayed because of the warm welcome we received. I highly recommend the staff.
Again, excellent customer service.
Muchas gracias :D The room we stayed at was clean, but a bit cluttered.
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I arrived and it did not look like it was in a safe part of town and didn’t feel safe as a solo female traveller or that I could park my bike safely.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Disappointed stay inaccurate info on website - The pictures on the website are a complete misreprentationof the reality, the accommodation is in 8 cabins in a small back garden of the main building, which is in a very poor and dirty part of town 20 minutes walk to the Centre, the bed was not queen size, there were no toiletries, even when requested, cold water shower only, tv was a 12 inch portable on a cupboard, there was no free coffee or water fountain, but water was given when asked for, the only plus was a fridge in the room, but not recommended at all.
- 57reg (8/5): Great little gem - Super little gem 10 minutes from city center. Seven small cabins with green courtyard. Double room with fans. A.c. extra. Not Hyatt but I did not come here to be in north America. Very friendly staff. Fridges in room .
- rossano (6/5): - Hotel confortevole e piacevole ma posizionato in una zona sporca e lontano dal centro
- 461greg (10/5): clean, quiet hotel away from city center - The owner was extremely helpful as she was fluent in both English and Spanish. Coming from Costa Rica we did know our way around Granada and the owner explained all the attractions and went as far as writing out the directions and transportation to take in Spanish. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very affordable and delicious. Service was quick and efficient. If it was not for the owner we would have missed our return transportation to Costal Rica. She communicated with the shuttle company and arranged pickup nearby. She went the extra mile and took us out to the connection point. I would definitely stay again at the hotel and recommend it to other visitors.

- StephanieNGng (10/5): Support local business! We loved it! - What a great experience! We LOVED being hosted at Casa Barcelona - a quiet, peaceful, welcoming, safe place. The hotel is run by its founder Yexira, and Nicaraguan women. The rooms are more beautiful in person than the photos on this website. Every aspect of the hotel is cared for: the rooms, the property, the beautiful gardens in the courtyard, and of course the guests. Breakfast AND COFFEE are DELICIOUS. We loved being away from the chaos of the Parque Central but having it close enough to walk to (about 10 - 15 minutes). The neighbors are friendly (give them a smile and a wave) and there is a delicious restaurant down the block and around the corner. We felt safe and accommodated at all times. We would definitely stay there again in the future.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Stayed 3 nights and hotel owner spoke English very good and she was nice to chat with. The owner was eager to help us with finding things to do in Granada. We ate breakfast for $5 and the food was very tasty. The room was basic which we had thought it would be but there was a strong musty odor and the bed blanket and pillow seemed to be always damp/wet. The shower had only a trickle of cold water.
- Floortjeopreis (8/5): Lovely quiet place to stay, away from the crowds - Casa Barcelona is a lovely guesthouse with rooms surrounding a garden which is obviously well tended to. The room was good, spacious enough (if you stay as a couple and don't have the extra bed it is very spacious), with great mattresses and a good ceilingfan. Cleaning could be a little more thorough, but nothing for me to worry about (main things like bed, sheets, toilet were very clean!).
They are in the process of doing up some of the rooms, which should help with small problems such as calcified shower heads.
The breakfast is big, no matter what option you choose, and well prepared. The city centre is about 10 minutes away on foot - a walk you can easily do (also on your own) until about 9, 10pm. I loved the fact that we were not in the middel of the madness and would definitely stay here again, also because the owner was very helpful!
- adolphcr (8/5): Very convenient place! - It was a nice place based on the price, just 10 minutes away walking from downtown Granada, very quiet, not all the rooms have A/C and some of them need a little maintenance. They have security cameras around, good WiFi and common areas to rest if you want.
- 699wesw (10/5): Very happy - We stayed here for two nights.
Very tranquil Oasis amidst the busy streets of Granada.
The owner and her nephew were very kind, helpful and eager to please.
The food was great, and the rooms were very clean and comfortable.
We enjoyed our stay and would come again next time we are in Nicaragua!
Thanks very much and keep up the great work! :)
- jenny (8/5): Nice hotel, comfortable and quite. - The experience was good. The rooms were clean, there was an extra charge for A/C which is totally worth it since the heat is strong. The staff was always friendly. Great place to relax and disconnect if you want some peace and quite.
- Joanna123456 (10/5): Very well run, clean and reasonably priced hotel. - I love the staff, they're so friendly and helpful. The hotel is a short walk to the centre of town but that means you will experience the market! Our room was clean, bright, spacious and comfortable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
- keiko (6/5): 親切なスタッフ - 歩いて5分以内に湖があり、レストランも多いです。早朝出発の為食事が取れなかったので、リンゴとヨーグルトを用意してくれました。
- for-or (10/5): Quite and friendly corner - I have spent 3 night in Hotel Casa Barcelona and very much enjoyed my stay. The room was clean, great wifi service and very friendly staff. Yexira was very helpful and helped arranging a taxi to the airport, her uncle have made some home remedy for me to treat my mosquito bites.Stayed with a friend and we the walk through the market every morning was part of the experience. At night it is better to take a taxi back here but this would cost you about a 1$. No hot water but I got used to it after traveling in Nicaragua for two weeks plus the weather is hot. Comfortable bed and very quite at night. Over all I decently recommend staying here if you don't mind not being a little off center.. Thank you very much.
- Enrique (10/5): Great place to stay, Very confi staff. - Clean room, friendly staffs, offers bike rentals and tours.
- sophie (8/5): La tranquillité - À 10 minutes du parc central à pied, endroit chaleureux, bon service.
Tranquillité.
- 150ghadeerq (10/5): Nice clean and quiet - I experienced a very comfortable stay at this hotel, very clean, great garden and sitting area.
Its in a quiet area in Granada, owned by a very nice helpful Nicaraguan family, the staff were also very good and punctual.
Great price for great comfortable stay, Ill definitely stay here again.
Thank you buena familia
- U246MBmariad (2/5): Bad choice - This hotel shouldn't have any stars with the service they offered
The room was very poorly clean and the bathroom don't have hot water or a window just a hole in the wall
The room was not clean even when we left the keys at the front their response was "you didn't ask for it"
Internet never work in 2 nights
The area is really unsafe and lots of homeless around
- Verified traveler (6/5): unsafe location, terrible customer service - The hotel is fine and the rooms are clean but the location is far from the rest of the hotels and we did not feel safe walking to/from the hotel to downtown. The hotel's gate was always locked with a big padlock and there were lots of security cameras which wasn't comforting to see. We're also pretty sure we woke up to gun shots one morning. When we told taxis where we were staying, they said "Oh..."
- Jena (6/5): Middel - Morgenmaden var dyr og elendig. Området er ifølge lokale et usikkert kvarter.
Lå tæt på centrum, fint staff og ok værelse.
- 521mirjamg (8/5): Very relaxing and quiet place - We stayed 2 nights at this hotel; the employees were very friendly and helpful with planning our future journey.
The rooms were very clean, the beds very comfortable and very quiet enviroment. It is a perfect place to stay if you are looking for something romantic and relaxing
- adamsM8295QO (2/5): Never Again. - My wife and I used to love this place. We stayed here on our honeymoon and were treated like royalty. I´m sad to say that our experience this time around was the complete opposite and we will not be staying here again. The staff displayed incompetence and when we let the owner know, not only did she defend her incompetant staff, she insulted my wife and compared her to a snake.
We originally reserved a room for 3 nights. My wife is a native Nicaraguan from Masaya. We decided to drive up early and called the hotel to see if a room was available for a 4th night before the nights we reserved. We spoke with a staff member and after asking several questions to make sure there were no hidden fees, we were told the rate and it was to our liking.
When we arrived we were not met with a friendly greeting like in the past. The woman at the desk didn´t say anything at all, even when we said hello. I was surprised to find that the rate we were to be charged was not what we were told over the phone and I asked for an explanation. The lady we were speaking with was the same lady we spoke with over the phone. She was at a loss for why the rate was different and couldn´t explain and didn´t seem to care. She called the owner to see why, but the owner couldn´t explain either. We asked if my wife could speak with the owner and as soon as my wife was handed the phone, the owner hung up. This happened 3 times and as the frustration mounted, we just accepted the higher rate. Mistakes happen and if the rate was properly explained and an apology was given, this would not have been a big deal.
The next day, we spoke with the owner in person, who explained why we were charged more than we were told over the phone. She never apologized and she did not honor the rate discussed on the phone. She spoke to me in English and used a metaphor comparing Nicaraguan women (my wife specifically) to snakes. Her attitude and tone were attrocious and the service was the polar opposite of what we received on our honeymoon. Needless to say, we were disenchanted and offended. Everytime we saw them for the rest of the stay, it was awkward.
The room was somewhat clean. The maids obviously didn´t look under the bed as there were lots of dead insects and candy wrappers from people who stayed there before us.
We asked for a room with air conditioning and the only room they had with air had 3 twin beds. We thought this was perfect, as my wife´s sister was coming into town and we thought she could crash in our room on the third bed. We asked the lady at the front desk (the same one who gave us an incorrect rate) if it would be an extra charge and she said yes, but she didn´t know how much. She refused to contact the owner to check for us. Other family members traveled with my wife´s sister and they were going to get their own room, but the woman at the front desk told them she didn´t know if they had any available rooms or not. Surprised by her lack of knowledge and impolite demeanor they decided to stay elsewhere.
I wish I had something nice to say about this place, but the entire stay was a trainwreck. The rate is cheap, but I´ll happily pay double in the future to a hotel that doesn´t treat us the way we were treated. I still can´t believe they compared my sweet wife to a snake.
- mvb1826 (8/5): Exactly what I expected. - My two children and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and were very happy with it.
Room: The room was pleasant and clean, and we found the fans were amply sufficient to keep the oppressive heat away. Nets on the windows, lots of storage space, and a closet that locked. The shower had only cold water as an option - not super cold, so entirely manageable and in fact very pleasant given the heat! The lighting in the room was dim, however, making reading difficult. Our room was at the very back and was quiet except for some minor sounds in the mornings.
Reliability: The staff had our reservation and the room was ready for us. Note that we forgot our backpack in the reception area for an entire day - the staff called us to advise and then handed it to us, with all its original contents, when we returned.
Grounds: Well kept, clean, pretty. A large and pleasant area near reception where breakfast is served and where one can lounge/read.
Parking: Tight, but available.
Location: The hotel is situated about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and, to get to the centre, you have to walk through a street and market area that has not been sanitized for tourists. We didn't mind this at all, and simply took a cab after dark.
Services: A good breakfast is served at a reasonable price. For an authentic Nicaraguan experience, for dinner try the restaurant at the top of the hill about two blocks away. Good fish dishes! You can ask the hotel to have your laundry done.
A good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
- tina1886 (6/5): Good stay for one night - We booked a room at Casa Barcelona by phone, but when we arrived the girls at the reception were very suprised. It looked like they weren'r used to welcome guest. After a hesitating start we eventually got a room and a welcome drink. The room was small, but had everything we needed. It's not located in the most beautiful part of town, but is near the buses to Granada. In the evening we met the woman who is responsible for Casa Barcelona and she greeted us in perfect English. Breakfast is not included and expensive, so it might be a good idea to eat elswhere.
- 917katherineh (10/5): Wonderful, tranquil stay! - We stayed at Casa Barcelona for 3 nights. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk to Central Park & you get to walk through the Mercado, which we really enjoyed. As this was a hot time of year we paid the additional $9 per night to use the air conditioning (well worth it!).
The room was clean & cool, with plenty of big trees and a lovely garden surrounding the rooms. The staff are only too happy to help & provided us with plenty of information to see Granada ourselves, as well as accessing tours such as to Masaya Volcano, Laguna de Apoyo & the Mombacho Cigar Factory.
Thank you for having us! :)
- Bferencz (10/5): Fantastic Stay at Hotel Casa Barcelona - We traveled to Granada as a family. My 9 and 2 year old daughters and wife loved being in this sweet little off the beaten path hotel. It was quiet, safe and walking distance to the center of the city. Breakfast in the morning was perfect and the staff was very helpful. Clean, comfortable and highly recommended!
- nismmathias (8/5): Great, inexpensive hotel - We stayed here for 5 nights in May. Really lovely little space with a shower, bed, safe, wifi and A/C. It's a couple blocks from downtown which cuts down on noise. The staff couldn't be friendlier and were very helpful. The whole space feels very safe and secure, they keep the gate locked at all times and someone is always around to let you in and out.
- NicolaF743 (10/5): Peaceful and comfortable - I was really impressed with this small, friendly hotel. I stayed for 2 nights - having stayed previously in a more expensive hotel in Granada, I wasn't expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised.
The room was spotless, set in a lovely garden courtyard. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've stayed in in a hotel. And though the water wasn't hot, the shower was powerful and good.
The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was lovely, with a large selection. It was peaceful and very comfortable overall, with a nice area with chairs and hammocks to relax after a busy day.
Do be aware that it is not in the centre of the city. You have to walk past the market, across the small stream and walk a bit through the outskirts to reach it. The blurb rightly says it's a ten minute walk to town. Worth having a light of some sort with you if coming back late - one night there was a power cut on the surrounding streets when I was returning and I had to find my way through quiet streets in pitch dark!
- Kara (6/5): Average - I would not recommend. The room smelled damp and the bathroom smelled like a urinal. The tv did not work. We asked how to turn on the AC and they said it was an extra $10 per day. Staff was helpful and location was walking distance to city center.
