Guest Reviews
- Darrell (10/5): - Clean room, nice peeps! Close to many amenities... Enjoyed my stay...
- Cesar Alonso (10/5): - Great service and location, our room was renovated, very clean and comfortable.
Will be back. Thank you!
- Gregory (2/5): - Uniquely bad. No toilet paper in one of the rooms, shared toilets unclean, no towels, air con broken so no sleep. not sure where all the excellent reviews come from. More a bad hostel than a pub hotel. The bar manager checked us in and he was nice but got to be the weirdest experience of a hotel ever. Dont bother believing the good reviews. Avoid!!
- Aceyork (10/5): - All the staff are really nice! And the property is so cool too
- Ruitian (2/5): - There were no check-in instructions, front door was locked and they didnt pick up phone calls.
- John (8/5): - Honestly my only complaint was that I had to park in the street
- Erin (6/5): - Go in with low expectations. Knowing its a hostel is important. Its NOT a hotel. Light in room but no lightbulb. Tag left on blankets meaning they hadnt been washed. No outlet in bathroom so dont expect to use a blow dryer or straightener. Tv was setup. But the cord didnt reach any outlets, so we were unable to use it. Nice room just wasnt ready for ppl to be staying in. Unfortunate, but did the job.
- Mason (6/5): - Eh. No mystery about the place. Good bed, fun vibe. Wear headphones.
- mahadev (10/5): - best
- CHERI (8/5): Unique Atmosphere! - The best part was the character of the place....it had a great vibe from the Blues on Whyte club downstairs. Was exactly what I expected.....great location to stay a night or two. Not a luxury resort but was a pleasant quick stay. Staff were great and check in /out was easy.
- Stephen Joseph (8/5): - If you are in to experiencing the Edmonton nightlife then this is the hotel for you. Many restaurants, theaters, shops, bars, and markets within walking distance. The hotel itself is an older building, the rooms are small, shared bathrooms, and no air conditioning. It’s located on a very active street so be aware it could be noisy (especially if you open the window). But if you are OK with that I highly recommend this hotel. The hotel was very clean and the bed was comfortable. A fan in the room would have been appreciated though. There are no other hotels in the immediate area so if you want to experience the neighborhood this where you want to stay.
- Susan (8/5): - Love the location! and it was so fun to spend the night dancing and just go up to the room!
- Rowen (10/5): - Staff were amazing! Gave us upgrade and told us good place to park. Convient location
- Lucas (10/5): - Good place to drink
- Viktoriia (4/5): - Damage deposit haven't been refined yet. 2 weeks since I stayed there. Trying to reach out to front desk several times. No luck.
Room clean. No washroom in the room.
- Maddyson (2/5): - Gross
- Susan (8/5): - The rooms are small but clean. It is a great place to stay if you want to listen to the music and not worry about traveling home.
- Dallas (10/5): - Clean room, very accommodating, friendly staff
- Craig (8/5): - We booked a room here because we wanted to check out some live music and didn't want to drive afterwards.
The room was small but clean. There were shared bathrooms and showers. No food service but, lots of options very close by.
The music was great and the staff was very friendly.
We live quite a ways out of town so, this worked out really well for us.
Would definitely do it again.
- kevin (10/5): - Good place to stay after listening to music
- Leroy (8/5): - The room was a little hot. Everything else was fine.
- Rob (8/5): - The rooms have been updated and there clean, they are small however its an older hotel. The carpet in the hallways needs to be replaced or a shampoo cleaning. Over all it was a nice experience.
- Rejeanne (10/5): Best date night EVER - We had an absolutely BLAST!! We danced all night! It was our fist time spending the night and we’ll be back many times!!! Best Blues bar in the city!!!!
- Cassandra (10/5): - All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Heather is a gem. Would definitely stay here again!
- Fiona (8/5): - Staff was friendly but getting into hotel was confusing
- Hannah (10/5): - clean amenities , friendly staff, super convenient access to the bar downstairs and whyte ave, it’s quiet after bars on whyte ave close down for the night
- Ali (10/5): - Better than i expected
- Anton (10/5): - I came to town for a Metallica concert and stayed at this hotel. After the concert, when I returned to the hotel, I was pleasantly surprised by a bar on the first floor. There was an amazing party with live music, and the musicians were playing incredibly well, very professionally. I went to bed after 2 a.m. I'm glad I chose this hotel.
- donald (8/5): - Heather and the security staff were most accomodating. They gave me a larger room with 2 twin beds while some plumbing repair was made on my original booked single room for one person. Adjacent to the renovated hotel was a great blues club -Blues On Whyte- which was a free access to Saturday afternoon jamming AND a free blues performance at night. Also - the access to the Whyte Ave. shopping district with a myriad of ethnic restaurants and shopping boutiques was a wonderful and walkable experience. I'm going back soon as I can...
- Lori Ann (10/5): - The staff were very friendly, loved the posters and murals.
- Carl (10/5): - A classic Edmonton music venue.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was small but very clean and comfortable. Great location to many things and walkable!
- Angel (8/5): - They need to clean the washrooms!!! Are dirty
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disapointing - Stain over on the carpet, loud music with vibrating walls as my room was right atop a inside underground pub.
Shower/toilets were hairy and floor wasnt clean (hostel style, share amenities)
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The gentlemen at the front basically acted like we were inconveniencing him by showing up to get our room. He had no manners and was more concerned about his videogame streaming than his paying customers. The bedding was stained and the mattresses were not comfy at all.
- Pamela (2/5): - Absolutely nothing. The funny service check in lady, absolutely rude, no manners or nice speaking to the customer
- Joe (6/5): - Located on the most popular street in all of Edmonton. Lots of places to eat and lots of entertainment. The night we stayed, blues player Kenny Wayne Shepherd was performing downstairs.
- Ariel (10/5): - Great venue downstairs for music and drinks and very friendly, helpful staff. Newly renovated from our last stopover here. Definitely the best location for the price if you are not too fussy.
- Jamie (8/5): - Cheep, close to everything, very friendly staff, clean, comfy beds and blankets
- Julie (8/5): - Great as always!! Thank you!!
- Ryan (8/5): - Was a decent place to stay for the cost
- Elma (8/5): - The bar has excellent blues music. The room is what to be expected for an old hotel. The location is great for things on or near white avenue
- Anastasia (8/5): - The Commercial Hotel offered exactly what I was looking for! Great staff, Amazing location, and a place to sleep and shower with a reasonable price tag. Not the cleanest or newest, but definitely a great place to crash within walking distance from all amenities. 100% would stay here again.
- Joshua (2/5): The Worst Hotel Experience Of My Life - The worst hotel experience of my life. The filthiest room, the worst amenities, I really cannot explain how horrible it was. Left after 3 hours. After traveling 15 hours I really tried to stay here so I didn’t have to switch hotels at 4am but it was unbearable and the switch was made. Got charged for a night and extremely pissed off. DO NOT STAY HERE!
- alan (4/5): - cold, shower or toilet didn't work had to fix them our-selfs.
- Ivan (2/5): Shockingly bad customer service and denying mice - There was a mouse in my room 217. And because I do not smoke and requested non smoking room, the owner of the hotel wanted to raise my rate to $85 stating that is an upgrade. I thought non smokers and smokers were treated equally. Apparently Not. They canceled my room service because of the mouse and because i argued with the owner about the rate. I said i was only going to pay the agreed rate of $50.58 instead of $85. Next morning she canceled my reservation but she took my money.
- D.BBB (8/5): - Great Blues Bands that perform. Great stage sound and patrons
a really inclusive welcoming community. Look forward to the next time,
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The customer service was absolutely disgusting and terrible. 0/10 would recommend. The rooms also looked like they were barely even cleaned.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Not worth the price, dirty rooms, no internet.
Regretted it when i first step in the room.
- Esmatullah (4/5): Check before u want stay here! - Honestly, I never imagined that such dirty hotel exist in Edmonton city. Believe me or not can not walked with bear feet in rooms floor because of dirty carpet. My wife couldn’t sleep because drunk people always waking in the corridor and was making sounds.
- Delia (2/5): - Although my room was a non-smoking one, the smell of cigarette was so strong from the vent making me a practically a second hand smoker which is as dangerous as being a smoker itself. On the website, it was not clear that bar operates on the day of my stay and I was not able to sleep until past 2pm. All I wanted then was a good night sleep which I was not able to have. I ended up being grougy the next day for my conference. Not a very good experience.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Its better to pay extra and stay somewhere better - Worst hotel ever!! The room was not clean, the blankets were old and torn, the carpet was very dirty. The lobby and the rooms were smelling as well. We had to take shower after checking in to a new hotel the next night as your body was itching after sleeping on the bedsheet.
The mattress was also dirty from the bottom. Never again I’m staying in this hotel. Cant believe they charged me $95 for the night. A motel would have been cheaper and better option.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Paid for damages already done to room that wasn't what I was told I was getting like missing a bed .weird stains .I did make a mess and there was one spot if red on sheets but when I went today Nytgubg I was rudely threatened Nd made to feel I was asking a scene by ever disagreeing. Not cool I own my mistakes . So a guy in the full swing of chemo therapy and raddiation paying cash daily looking to stay about ten days isnt even worth the respect of hearing there side or evrn letting him talk. Needless to say the chain of events has me miss an important part of my chemo cost me alot in inconvience time and mostly dignity as the cancer treatment has me moving slow as I am. Alot of pain . I felt small as if I was doing something wrong by wanting to have my side heard . Hoke thing embarrassed me in a time I already feel different and sick. tto bad cause I don't need a fancy classy joint to be happy but the manager coukdnt make me stay at the Ritz Carlton pent house suit . Litterally so rude ill never even goto the.bar out fear of seeing her again!.
- EDUARDO (6/5): Stay alone o couple not for families - Is a good place to stay a short time is a common shower room
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I have always wanted to come and stay at this historic hotel. My nephew and I were here for Grey Cup weekend and location was absolutely perfect for everywhere we had to commute to via Uber. The rooms were very basic but very clean and showed that the cleaning staff have pride in their work. The folks working at the front desk are very pleasant and accommodating as well.
- John (8/5): - Great place and location for the price. Checkin was 3, got there at 340 and no parking available. should not state free parking if all the Blues on Whyte staff and people park there and no spots. However on weekend there is additional parking in rear of hotel for 3 dollars for 24 hrs.
- Dawn (10/5): - Staff are really friendly! It’s my first time visiting Edmonton, have no ideas about location for food, staff told me where to go and how the food is. Nice!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The room looked like a crack den. With baseboards randomly missing. The smoke dector was dangling off the wall. There were some bugs onbtye floor. We actually just left.... they wouldn't refund the room but it wasnt worth getting bedbugs
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very noisy, no hot water, floors creaking, ants in bathroom walls, no Kleenex, rugs were disgusting, one chair, no hangers, overall was not worth the sty. To many stairs. One plug in. Would not recommend to anyone.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Front attendants never pick up the phone or attending at the front desk. We had to wait quite a bit for every time we needed assistance.
- Jacey (2/5): - Dirty, getto, drug addicts hanging out in the hallway. Burn marks on the sheets. Smelt bad. Not a proper lock on door. Rust in the sink. Just overall one in a life time experience because I’ll never be back. I’ll pay the extra and go down the street.
Ps. Pain in the ass sharing a bathroom. In the morning the women’s sink was filled with hair and dirty towels in the ground. Didn’t even wanna use the “shared” shower, would mostly likely get warts..
- Sushi (8/5): - It was cheap and better than expected. A few issues but good if you are on a budget!
- Verified traveler (6/5): good stay - it is good to stay in commercial hotel.
- Chevy (6/5): - The hotel is a land mark from the past it is old how anyone cant understand that befor they come there i dont know. Its a place to sleep. But thee magic is with the music that the other hotels dont have now im a musician and quit afew of my friends have played there from edm and van mabie one day ill play there.its not fancy its rock and roll and da blues thanks sean.
- Eryn (10/5): great atmosp;here great staff - awesome highly recommended
- Randy (8/5): - Was a little smaller then expected. Would have liked to have a bathroom in the room.
- Doug (10/5): - The property is old, but still very comfortable. The staff were friendly and rooms are decent.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Tv didnt work in 214 got moved to 216 ,got clostrifobia, the bed and dresser is right in front of door, tap drips constantly ,HOT water, what a waste, all it needs is a new washer or rubber,im sure its been like that for a long time. Then got moved to 221 ,much better but couldnt use the tub ,hot water tap was so tight couldnt move it ,yet it still dripped. Took shower in the shared bathroom ,water spews everwhere ,floor was soaked when i got out. Bad drainigeproblem, tub had 3 inches of water very slowly draining. Carpets r gross in all the rooms , if your going to spruce up a place ,you should start with the carpets. It really makes a difference. The nicest thing about your place is the morning gal at the front desk. Went out of her way for me ,was so pleasant and showed that she cared about the client. Should be employee of the month.
- Sheron (2/5): Terrible experience - Everything was terrible here. Firstly very bad smell from room. Sheets were not changed. Plenty of hair on sheets. Very noisy so hard to sleep at night. When I came back at 10:00pm doors were closed and staffs were doing something. I am not mentioning here what they were doing. Only positive thing it’s cheap. Not recommended for families. It’s terrible.
- Maya (2/5): Not good to book in summer time - The parking area is hard to locate. We stayed on the 2nd floor and it was so humid and hot, we asked for a fan but they did not provide us any. I wasn't able to sleep all night.
- Navdeep (4/5): - There were soo many ants in the room, no fan available. It was soo hot inside.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good for cheap accomodation - Staff friendly,if you are looking for a bed to sleep in with no frills cheap, this tne one for you.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room really small, no washrooms or shower in the room, you've to go a public one in the hallway and they are dirty
- eve (2/5): A place were you go to die! - The staff were great, the hotel was awful as you walk up the stairs to the top floor your lungs and your chest start to tighten because the air is so heavy with possibly smoke and drugs and heat.I use my (house key) looking key to open my door and it opens with barely a turn and looks like its seen a lot of screwdrivers jimmying it open. Room looked clean but took me shoes off and my feet stuck to the carpet, not a huge surprise i guess because by this point i realized i was staying in a glorified crack house. Unfortunately it was to late at night to do anything after the long drive i just endured. I checked the bed bonus no bed bugs, turned on the TV oh wouldn't work well it wasn't plugged in so i found the extension cord and plugged it in the socket hoping not to burn while i slept because it was pretty discolored. Woke up at 6;30 am because of the heat also good because parking is free on whyte ave.it is insanely expensive and they state free parking well 20 stalls to 63 rooms doesn't add up. Overall I feel like I need to get tested and I do not think this hotel should be on any site being promoted I would have rather rented a tent and slept outside.
- Dave (2/5): Old and Uncomfortable - Relatively run down, the room we were given was super small and had no air conditioning or air flow. Located right above the building ventilation for both the lobby of the hotel and the adjacent bar, we heard nothing but industrial fans outside the open window. The ridiculous temperature of the room made it nearly impossible to sleep comfortably on the bed that felt like it was a good romp away from disintegrating into a pile of rubble in the floor.
We had to "borrow" a fan from the hallway just to sleep semi-comfortably. The light above the sink (no washroom, which is shared in the outer hallway) was like something out of a horror movie with the flickering and unreliability. Good luck having sex on the bed that creaked and banged with a headboard that got more action than most of the people staying in the hotel.
I cant, in good conscience, recommend this hotel for anyone who wants the small comforts of home like a private shower, bathroom or the ability to sleep comfortably. Unless you just spent the night binge drinking at Blues on Whyte and just need a place to sleep it off, please, for your own sanity...stay somewhere else.
- Ahmed (2/5): A real bad experience - I was lucky to visit this hotel alone without the family, going Edmonton to finalise zen few things over the weekend. This was my experience.
1- check in and check out were fine and fast. No complaint.
2- Area was nice full of life and activities.
3- Room was the worst room I ever stayed in.
A- the room was smelly and even after I left, I still have that bad smell in my nose.
B- the room was not clean at all.
C- very hot room with no air conditioning
D- No house keeping at all. I was going down to the front disk to take fresh towels every day and accumulate dirty towels on bathroom floor.
E- You can not sleep at all. Saturday 3:30 am, a lady with very loud voice (could be the manager, not sure) collected many men and other ladies and kept talking to them in hallway in front of my room in a very loud and non considerate voice till 6 am. They kept going and coming and everyone was speaking and laughing slowly except her that had a very bad loud voice. No way to sleep. If I did not have something very important very early Sunday and wanted to avoid any delay, I would call the police for them.
4- Staff were totally non friendly
Conclusion; not a return and not recommended
- Annie (4/5): Old building, good location, needs improvement - Location was good. Building is old and needs improvement. Can do better on housekeeping.
- trevor (8/5): 2 day stay - Needs a good cleaning close to many stores bars etc
- Robert (2/5): I'm not sure why Expedia promotes this hotel. - I arrived to find a rundown hotel with a friendly front desk. When I got to my room I found it ice cold, the heat wouldn't work. It was a terrible room and I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
- Gerry (8/5): Great bar and live music - It was Avery thing I expected as this was not my first visit. Will stay there every year.
- Margo (8/5): Hotel Middle of Old 1902 1912 restored buildings - Experienced well kept, miscellaneous boutiques & food shops. First for the eyes
- Chris (6/5): Good location, poor renovations, good staff - The good:
* Staff was friendly upon check in and all throughout.
* Only one staff member pushed the door open at night like he was being inconvenienced and almost hit me with the door (given he was under a lot of pressure, but should control himself)
* Location is excellent if you want to experience Whyte Avenue
* Star bucks and Second Cup across the street if you are an early bird like me and like to read or work on your computer
The bad:
* I was in the 2 queen bed non-smoking room and the air conditioner is not sealed properly and cold air was coming in all day and night. I am not a contractor, but I know that a little bit of caulking to seal this is all that was needed, but whoever installed did not do, so this tells me the person who did the renovations wasn't very skilled or cut corners. Also, bath tub when you stepped on it made a noise that made you think it was going to fall through the floor. Also, bathroom door would not lock because someone had painted the hell out of it, so it would not close properly. This again is a simple fix, but not done.
* The bar downstairs has some sketchy people at night. As soon as we walked out the door, a lady had been hit by someone and police were being called.
* I gave the woman bartender $50 for two drinks and she gave me change for $20. I think she thought I was drunk and did not know what I gave to her. Therefore, she was trying to rip me off. And then I confronted her and she said, "Oh yeah, sorry" like she didn't know.
- Yohann (6/5): Commercial - Good for single person stay. - I went alone to write an exam in Edmonton. So I tried to stay in a cheapest hotel I can get. For the price we give this is an excellent choice for single person stay. I don't suggest for family stay here.
- Jo (8/5): Clean and pocket friendly - Located in a lively area, a nice record and book store across the street and great dining out options meters from the hotel. Great helpful staff and there was an awesome blues band in the bar the night I stayed there. Will definitely use again next time I'm in town.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Did the trick for a night out on Whyte Avenue! You get what you pay for, but the location is superb.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - If the hotel had set the right expectation at check-in then I would have given them a better review. This is not a hotel but rather a hostel or at the very least it should be called a motel. For the price tag it’s understandable why it was in the condition that it was. The unpardonable sin that this hostel committed in my view, was giving us a room that had NO heating in the middle winter (-10 Degrees Celsius) !!!and the front desk personnel knew about this but failed to divulge such important information from the beginning. I need not say more
- Garrett (6/5): Hotel - Friendly staff however upkeep was poor, not clean, all furniture including bed was old, beat up and dirty.
- rezi (2/5): worst place ive ever been to - a pure embarrassment to all hotel establishments in Canada
- Verified traveler (6/5): Blues on whyte
- The attached bar makes it worth the stay if you are looking for a night out and not close enough for taxi
- Julie (8/5): - it was good, quiet, i will be back to stay
