- Elizabeth (10/5): a beautiful, calm Ryokan that’s genuinely worth cycling too! - Genuine Japanese experience. Beautiful Ryokan. Lovely staff. Delicious food. Japanese dinner and breakfast both included and served in a private dining room and both exceptional. Highly recommend.
- Robert (10/5): enjoyed stay at traditional Japanese hotel - Lovely welcome, beautiful courtyard, enjoyed the experience of the shared bathroom, lovely bedroom. Had a great sleep as part of out Shimanami Kaido cycle experience

- Nick (5/5): Run down and expensive - It’s a charming old building and the staff are pleasant It is very run down - stained carpets, walls, and ceilings. Very much in need of some basic upkeep. Compared to other ryokans we have stayed in it was in poor shape and the meal was not especially good. Very basic bath (no shower or bath in the room we stayed in) without especially nice shampoo/soap and other amenities. Slow WiFi.
Quite overpriced for the quality you get. I don’t know why this is considered a 3 star hotel.

- C. (9/5): Klassiek Japans onderdak, vol sfeer!
- Dominique (10/5): Don’t hesitate to book! - This was our 3rd time staying at the Suminoe Ryokan. We enjoy the whole experience; the thoughtful and caring staff + management, the beautiful house+bath+garden and surroundings, along with the delicious meals, without forgetting Setoda and its iconic temples, Ferrara marble and sea views. Many thanks to all the staff!
- Boris (7/5): - Traditional Japanese hotel.
Good service. Felt expensive. Also for traditional style.
- Karolis (9/5): -
Wifi was slecht. Hotel heeft achterstallig onderhoud.

- Dana (10/5): - The spacious room was very comfortable. With everything we needed for a wonderful stay.
- Raz (10/5): An hotel with amazing traditional vibe - The atmosphere was incredible, great facilities and amenities, staff was very friendly and the place looks amazing.

- rhian (10/5): Peaceful and best Ryokan we have stayed in. - Quiet and peaceful with lovely garden. Rooms were spacious with original features.
Great food and Onsen too.
A real taste of timeless Japan!
- Janet (10/5): Amazingly wonderful - Everything was perfectly amazing from the beautiful garden, our room with a view of the sea to the multi-course delicious dinner. Highly recommend!!
- Rene (9/5): Heerlijk verblijf met voortreffelijk eten - Rustige serene omgeving Geen minpunten
- Michael (8/5): -
- Joseph (10/5): - Booked on super short notice but staff were so welcoming and kind. Traditional ryokan with super comfy futons and a wonderful onsen. The garden is very relaxed, and there are 2 smoking areas if that’s your thing!

- Loriel (6/5): Interesting experience with highs and lows. - Wonderful onsen, the breakfast was truly superb, the staff were very kind, the location was fantastic, beautiful garden. The room was spacious. The small bathroom (toilet only) in our bedroom had a terrible smell, like funky moldy socks. I ended up only using the toilet in the hall and begging my traveling companion to keep the door to our toilet closed because even opening it for a moment would waft the funky smell into our room. The hallways are not air conditioned (like many other places in Japan) so it was sweltering just to walk to our room. The carpets were old and had stains. The garden might have once had waterfalls and little streams but it was all dry during my visit (maybe to prevent mosquitoes?).
Rien.

- paul (10/5): Exceptional!! - Old traditional Inn with a beautiful garden in the courtyard and views of the waterfront. Lots of common areas space.
Our room had a garden view, was spacious, futons and pillows very comfortable. There is a good size fridge, a toilet, and a convenient sink for wash up and set all toiletries. Everything works well, wifi etc…onsen was very nice as well. The whole place is very clean and quiet,
Breakfast and dinner are served in a room and you can enjoy the view of the garden if you leave the doors open, the food was very good, traditional Japanese.
Fantastic location, basically across the street from the ferry we took for Onomichi. And by the bike path. The Main Street starts around the corner.
All the staff is wonderful. The hostesses are incredibly kind, fun and caring, they will assist you with anything. They picked us up at the Setoda bus station, we were grateful. You can rent a bike nearby.
Also I forgot my iPad on the JR train, they took the matter in their hands and I got it the next day!!
We spent 3 nights and it was great. We will definitely come back if in the area again. Nothing
- C (9/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): -
- Arn (6/5): - The rooms were spacious and the futons soft. The dinner is traditional Japanese food. I realize that for Japanese, this may be a great donner. For westerners however, the flavours are a bit too much.
Also I felt like the price was too high for a ryokan.
- Brenda (9/5): Nice, clean, everything you need - Nice room, Good Onsen, Meals were lovely Japanese style. Staff was attentive when needed. Everything was good
- Peter (8/5): Aanrader.
- Ron (8/5): -
- Hoang (10/5): -
- Lee (9/5): A thoughtful authentic welcome experience. - Great hospitality from the hosts. Amazing facilities and location and food and experience. I loved the team. Nothing.
- Judith (8/5): Authentic Japanese ryokan with gardens - Traditional old Japanese building with rooms set around a beautiful garden. Both breakfasts and dinners included lots of little bowls of delicious fish, vegetables and other healthy treats. Staff were formal and people ate in rooms only with fellow travelers so no socialising for solo guests.
Niente
- Ken (10/5): Excellent stay at traditional Japanese Ryokan - Excellent location next to ferry terminal and cyclin route Nothing to complain about - but is an older, traditional property
- Petra (8/5): -
- Jörg (10/5): -
- Virginie (10/5): - Heerlijk gegeten!
- Ken (9/5): Wonderful stay at a traditional ryokan along the Shimanami Kaido - This was a stop during our multi-day Shimanami Kaido bike tour. Conveniently location 1 min walk from the ferry terminal (one of our party came by ferry from Onomichi).
This is a very conventional and traditional Japanese ryokan - long established so the facilities, while updated and modernized, maintains most of its traditional features. The gardens are especially wonderful and worth spending some time to explore. The public baths are a little dated but clean and very well maintained.
As expected, the meals are typical ryokan-style, lots of local ingredients and preparations, the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
The staff were especially helpful in every way. One of our party was on foot (not cycling) and required assistance navigating local buses and taxis to some remote areas. The staff went out of their way to set up a suitable itinerary.
Highly recommended! Nothing we did not like. Note, however, this is a traditional ryokan and may not be suited for everyone, especially cyclists seeking a different kind of adventure. Some of the stairs and corridors are narrow and there are no elevators.

- michael (10/5): I will alway remember this night in Japan - It was a great authentic ryokan
If you want to experience the old ways then this is for you
The food was well presented and plenty for both dinner and breakfast Just had a little trouble with the beds but i believe this is what a ryokan should be like
- Cynthia (10/5): -
- sarah (10/5): Highly recommended place to stay for a traditional Japanese experience, beautifully presented food and awesome view from - Fantastic location on the waterfront. Beautiful view from our room. Traditional building built around a Japanese garden. Staff were very attentive and we were served an incredible dinner and breakfast in a private room. Wonderful experience. Nothing
- Thomas (9/5): -
- François (9/5): -
- Martin (10/5): - We stayed at this traditional ryokan after cycling from Onomichi on the shimanami kaidō. Our stay was delightful from beginning to end. Communication was easy and we selected a dinnertime (18:30) ahead of our arrival, which allowed us to arrive in good time to bathe in the shared bath (opens at 16:30) overlooking the garden, before taking in the sunset from our room with a beer.
The ryokan is easy to miss, as there is no English signage that I saw, so use Google Maps and look out for "住之江旅館". However, from the moment that we entered we were greeted warmly and with good enough English to put us at ease.
We are vegetarian (which we communicated in advance) and the meals, dinner and breakfast, were imaginatively and inventively curated around our dietary preferences. If you like Japanese food, then this is a wonderful culinary experience.
We were sad to leave after only one night. Nothing!
- Anthony (10/5): - Suminoe Ryokan is located in a great spot by the sea around halfway through the Shimanami Kaido. The included meals were delicious. I would recommend staying here if you're looking for a legit ryokan experience to break up your bike ride.
- James (10/5): One of our favourite stays anywhere in the world - Extremely helpful and hospitable staff. We were arriving late but they still managed to accommodate us. Beautiful room overlooking the sea. Delicious dinner and breakfast Nothing comes to mind. Others may complain it’s not a new building but it was super clean and charming
- Nadine (9/5): -
- Andy (9/5): -
- Alice (8/5): -
- Shiang-Chun (9/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): Don’t miss an opportunity to experience the hospitality in this ryokan - The history, its location and the most comfortable futons - the best night’s sleep.
- Rachel (10/5): Perfect, peaceful taste of Japanese hospitality - It was perfect - beautiful, clean and with a gorgeous sea view. The food was delicious, the onsen very relaxing and the staff were very hospitable (and helpful arranging for my bags to be forwarded to my next accommodation). Thank you! Nothing
- Yasuhiko (10/5): -
- Mariona (10/5): -
- Suzanna (10/5): Traditional japanese accommodation & food- fabulous. -
- Arne Martin (10/5): Meget behagelig Ryokan i fine omgivelser - Meget fint opphold.
- Bryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rebecca (9/5): Traditional experience in a charming old-fashioned inn with communal bathing area. - The staff were charming and full of care. They didn’t speak English but conversed via translations te apps, explaining everything. The traditional meals served in your own private dining room were amazing. The garden was lovely. The onsen was also a good size. The view of the inland sea was excellent. Next to the room we had a lovely seating area to look at the view. The yukatas were crisp and comfortable and you can eat breakfast and dinner wearing it. The traditional pillow was rather tough going!
- Sangho (8/5): Very good - Nice neighborhood, traditional rooms, variety of restaurants, very nice staff No reservation available in hotel's restaurant. In one of our two rooms, the sleeping mats were VERY firm.
- Dominique (10/5): Don’t look further, this is the place to be! - + Genuine atmosphere and service
+ Delicious, healthy, outstanding food
+ Serene and beautiful garden on the back side of the property
+ Serene and beautiful sea view on the front of the property
+ The staff truly cares about your well being
+ Both management and staff go out of their way to help you Nothing. Everything feels right at Suminoe Ryokan.
We hope to return, it’d be our third time.
- Celia (10/5): Ryokan stay - Loved the traditional Ryokan experience - hospitality, culture/food/onsen/views/peacefulness. We were doing the islands bike trail and I’m sure that soaking in the onsen helped my aches and pains! 🚲 Nothing!
- Ella (10/5): Exceptional - Incredible garden and a great stopping point along the shimanami kaido!
- Joel (10/5): - Beautiful 100 year old ryokan with a nice garden and a simple but nice onsen. The staff kindly got larger yukatas for my wife and me and they were very classy looking. Beautiful setting right by the water. Convenient to restaurants and shops.
- Stephanie (10/5): Exquisite dining experience and serene atmosphere in a memorable location - The meals provided were wonderful! Beautifully presented, fresh and locally inspired. Some of the best seafood we had during our trip! The small details were much appreciated by the host. The atmosphere was serene. We loved the garden and the sound of trickling water from the onsens in the background.
- Lumsden (8/5): This 400 year old full service Ryokan will sooth your tired muscles and feed you well. - This is a 400 year old Ryokan so full
History. The Onsen was hot and very nice. Our traditional Japanese room we loved. It has a lovely garden. The staff are super. It’s a 400 year old Ryokan so shows its age in spots. It’s not brand new.
- Aaron (8/5): Great place to stay but a small bit pricey - Nice, historic Ryokan. Friendly staff which gave us a personal touch to our stay, clean place, and really nice garden inside. Food was good too. Food was good but nothing too amazing, maybe I expected a bit more given the price. Some of the facilities look a bit dated too, but was still nice. Pillow may be a bit too hard for non Japanese
- Eileen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wu (10/5): Fantastic! - Thanks for the hospitality and generous assistances.
- Wendell (10/5): Exceptional - The property is beautiful. The meals are fabulous.
- Rhys (10/5): Exceptional - Relaxing
- Roger (8/5): Very good -
- Clare (8/5): We were very well looked after. - The service and food were excellent. The room was lovely, bed very comfortable except the pillows which were hard. Onsen and garden were lovely. We visited the temple, art gallery and museum and some restaurants in town. The pillows!
