Guest Reviews
- Robinson (6/5): A quiet and handy stopover - Good breakfast, pleasant staff
- kathryn (10/5): - Helpful and friendly staff, very clean and well appointed establishment.
Fabulous breakfast with lots of choices, lovely dining room. Bedroom very spacious and comfortable.
Almpe car parking, convenient distance from the town of Dumfries and a great base to explore all that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer.
Would definitely recommend staying at The Caledonian.

- Sylvia (8/5): Good value for money and breakfast was wonderful, everything and more you need. - Good location for trips. Good pubs and Italian restaurant 2 min walk away. Also Chinese takeout shop 2 min away. They do not have dinner restaurant at the Hotel but did not matter. Very friendly staff and very clean room. There is no night security or staff on site. There was someone trying to get into my room in middle of night. At least they left. Would be good to get security on site inthe night.
- Michael (8/5): Just good value in a great spot - Great location, good parking and fantastic value for money.
The self service breakfast was one of best I’ve had in a budget hotel.
Room even had iron and ironing board For the money? Nothing not to like.
- David (7/5): Very good value for the money and the breakfast was better than we expected. - We could not get the shower to work!!!
- Caroline (7/5): Nice hotel, would stay again in a different room - Good location. We’ve stayed before so knew what to expect. Staff are very helpful and rooms are clean. I think maybe we were above the kitchen this time, we were woken up at 6.30am by music playing below us (room 8).
- Ian (7/5): Very good breakfast. The road noise would have been a big issue if we had been staying longer. - Good breakfast.
Very clean room. The en-suite had no hooks to hang clothes/towels.
Road noise was an issue right throughout the night.
- Sadie (8/5): Nice stay - It was clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly. Easy to check in and out . Very comfortable bed. The stairs but it was old building . Was dated in places .
- Fiona (7/5): I would recommend to my friends & collegues. - Comfy, clean but good do with towel rails in bathroom & new shower fitting as these were either missing or hard to use & old. Location, staff were lovely. Great parking & free WiFi is a bonus now a days.
- ian (10/5): Great value and breakfast - Excellent location with a lovely room and facilities were great breakfast is excellent and price excellent Nothing
- Catherine (4/5): Disappointing hotel. - Good breakfast. Our room was poor and need of refurbishment. Broken window hinges and blinds. Cracked and broken floor tiles (health and safety issue).
- Peter (8/5): - Lovely staff at breakfast which was excellent for hot food. Coffee was also good. No rail or hooks in bathroom for towels!
- Adrian (7/5): Tired, but okay - The hotel was okay, very tired, but fine for a night’s stay. The shower was nice, but the cubicle was small.
Staff were lovely in the breakfast bar. Being woken up in the very early hours by a drunken woman shouting in the car park, then continuing to do so in the hotel, banging on the door of a neighbouring room. Her behaviour was no fault of the hotel, of course, but there is clearly no staff managing guests.
- Alastair (7/5): Good clean basic accommodation not far from the station. I'd be happy to stay there again. - All very straightforward Nothing
- Shirley (10/5): Excellent facilities & location, free parking. We have stayed 3times here when visiting dalscone par - Excellent location & staff were lovely. Room was emasculate & the breakfast was amazing Nothing
- Ron (8/5): -
- ian (9/5): -
- stewart (7/5): -
- Burdock (8/5): - Staff very friendly. Good amount of parking Could do with a restaurant on site for evening meal
- John (9/5): Great wee hotel. Not far to town centre. - Breakfast was very good. Plenty of choice to set you up for the day ahead. Room was small but comfortable.
- Linda (8/5): - Room was comfortable but not very big nice and quiet and quite near to town Bathroom too small especially the shower breakfast was a little too restricting not enough space for buffet and too dark water for tea was lukewarm but the food was tasty enough
- Arun Singh (1/5): It’s not a hotel. - May be just the free parking Everything, the rooms are tiny with a portable toilet installed.
Noisy, smelly, uncomfortable bed.
I had a really bad headache after staying there for 2 nights.
- jilly (7/5): -
- Karen (7/5): Cheap and cheerful but in need of a spruce up - We liked the location, just a ten min walk to town. Parking was easy. The bed was comfortable with nice bedding. Breakfast was generous and tasty. Our room, number 3, is in desperate need of refurbishment. The fixtures and fittings are falling apart. Only one of the big windows had a blind. No hooks anywhere to hang coats or towels or dressing gowns on. Tiny towels.
Tinned fruit salad! Awful coffee!
- Cleary (10/5): Great two nights stay - The location was great, the bed was comfortable, one of the best nights sleeps that I've had in a hotel and the breakfast was lovely. Basic hotel with limited facilities but absolutely perfect for our needs
- Derek (7/5): - Excellent breakfast We used to stay here frequently until 2018, there used to be a nice bar and restaurant, it appeared that this was being run down as the bar had no draught beer and limited other stock and the restaurant no longer exists.
- Lindsey (7/5): - Friendly welcome and good breakfast Bar closed very early
- Steven (10/5): -
- Tustin (4/5): -
- Clive (6/5): Ok - Car park and easy to find Had to ring from reception
No one at property
- Andrew (8/5): Great value, quality hotel - The twin bed room was comfortable and warm which was welcomed as it was cold during our stay. All the basics were there and the tea / coffee facilities had plenty of options. The staff, as always, were friendly and welcoming, the buffet breakfast was exceptional and my nephew, on his first trip with me, loved the variety and choice available. The hotel itself is not far from the town centre and one of the main large supermarkets, the train station was also a short distance away. Upon entering the room the floor just near the radiator on the left felt as if it was flexible and there might be a hole there when we stepped on it, there was an ironing board available but unfortunately no iron.
- Nicole (7/5): I had a lovely time, thank you :) - Breakfast was good and even had haggis! Room was a little shabby
- Thomas (9/5): -
- sammy (7/5): - Location Room clean and tidy Restricted bat opening
- Jennifer (8/5): -
- jai (8/5): -
- Kirstie (9/5): -
- simon (7/5): Good - Overall very good for the price. Decor a little dated & bathroom could do with updating but clean & comfortable.
- Douglas (10/5): Very good - Hotel value for money Bar no draught beers cans over priced
- Agnes (5/5): Disappointed - Didn't enjoy breakfast. Cleanliness in bedroom and bathroom.
- harry james (10/5): -
- Lesley (10/5): Comfortable, clean and warm. The hotel is a little dated and tired looking, but the staff are very f - The room was comfortable clean and warm. Toiletries in the bathroom. Excellent breakfast in the morning The room and bathroom was dated and could be doing with a little upgrading, but for an overnight stay it certainly did us fine
- Frank (6/5): - Clean and tidy Nobody on reception had to call a number to be told key was behind desk
Didn’t see anyone until breakfast next morning
- Susan (10/5): - It was nice spacious clean and nice little extras tea coffee hot chocolate biscuits sweets lux soap shampoo and shower wash TV towels and the breakfast was a buffet really freshly made
- Rachel (7/5): -
- Diane (10/5): V enjoyable - V clean.
Gave extras in the facilities.
Central to restaurants.
Staff were all nice and friendly Nothing
- jennifer (8/5): - The room was clean and spacious and had everything we needed.
The bed was nice and firm.
The staff were helpful .
The breakfast was excellent.
overall great value for money
- Robert (9/5): Friendly staff and great breakfast - Clean rooms
- Dale (9/5): Excellent value, clean, comfortable and will definitely stay again when in Dumfries. - Breakfast was very good. It was buffet style but it was all very hot, very well cooked and plenty of choice. There were cereal, fruit, juice and yoghurt choices too and help yourself bread to toast. Well done. The only downside was that it wasn't in the heart of the town although the walk wasn't too far and I felt perfectly safe. For anyone arriving in a car this wasn't a problem but if anyone had walking issues it wasn't teriibly convenient for the heart of Dumfries.
- Gus (8/5): -
- Sonia (8/5): Love this hotel, stayed in room 7, very comfortable, great breakfast , room and linen very clean - Beds comfy, room and bathroom clean. Well stocked tea/ coffee/ biscuits etc. Breakfast was delicious Room was quite cold in the evening and couldn’t get the heater mounted on the wall to work
- Joe (9/5): - Very comfy and friendly, a great breakfast, and incredibly well priced.
- Angus (9/5): A good choice - Price good good location clean and shower and tv worked well Bar closed
- Sharon (5/5): - It's central to were we want to be When checking in I thought the guy was quite rude the door was locked and the bar was closed when I was under the impression it was open during check in hours
- Jim (9/5): -
- Carolyn (9/5): -
- julie (8/5): Great value - Good location, easy to find, friendly staff, clean room. Good breakfast. Excellent value for money Nothing
- Graeme (10/5): -
- Blurton (8/5): - Great amenities and great sleep. Usually at most hotels the beds are way to soft. The biscuits and hot chocolate were a nice touch. Nothing not to like!
- Graeme (8/5): Caledonian is a central located clean , friendly welcoming Hotel , ideal for short or longer stays. - Room was comfortable , clean , Decor was good , Bathroom situated in the room is excellent. Hotel clean and welcoming .
Breakfast was a buffet style help yourself with an excellent choice of hot and cold food .

- james (9/5): Had a lovely stay, great staff, very clean and one of the best breakfast I’ve ever had, we’ve stayed in 5 star hotels an - Very clean, great staff, good location, breakfast was best great…😋 For the price can’t complain about anything.
- Richard (10/5): Cale-bonga - Easy access to town centre as not far, great location, amazing, bar price is fair, bed is comfy, lobe the Scottish breakfast especially it being a help yourself and the hotel is amazing as staff are welcoming, helpful also friendly. N/A
- Inglis (8/5): - Location. Price. Facilities dated.
- Sharon (9/5): Excellent value for money, good all round stay - Excellent value for money, old furniture, but spotlessly clean, lovely biscuits, plenty of tea and coffee, breakfast very good, plenty of variety. A bit out of the town, 5 minute drive
- Andrew (10/5): Magnificent stay at a quality hotel. - The room I booked with a double bed was larger than expected and very comfortable. The room was well decorated, had plenty of light from the two large windows. the two seater sofa was so comfortable and a welcome relief after a day of walking. The bed was so comfortable that I fell asleep in no time. The staff from checking in to leaving were exceptional, helpful and so friendly, the interaction with the guests gave the atmosphere of such a welcoming place. The buffet breakfast was excellent and had a good choice for all tastes and the main thing I already miss. As for value for money it was marvellous and was better priced than some of other hotels and accommodation in the same area. Compared to the previous times I have stayed the level of quality and professionalism has increased significantly and I cannot say enough good things about the hotel. Cannot say a bad thing about the place.
- Tina (8/5): 1night in Dumfries - Location perfect. Easy 10min into centre
Stayed before and will stay again.
Shower powerful.
Light and airy room.
Hotel having update (breakfast good) Bedroom was cold in night. Heating didn't come on til morning. (Woke early hours chilly)

- Susan (9/5): - Staff were lovely. Was in a good location not too far from the centre of town. The room was spacious and clean. The breakfast was great with a good choice. Great value for money. The room was dated, and the carpet has seen better days.
- Stephen (2/5): - The staff, and breakfast The room was cold the bathroom was freezing the radiator in the bathroom wouldn't work, I complained and was told to use the electric oil filled heater in the bathroom? Water and electricity?
- Fiona (8/5): Good value - Clean Breakfast was a little stewes
- Sharon (9/5): Good value, provided extras that more expensive hotel do not ! - Spotless clean, value for money!!! Staff friendly and efficient x Only double bed, although not your fault
- Ashley (10/5): -
- Daryl (5/5): Great mattress on the bed but unfortunately the paper-thin walls didn’t help. - The bed was very very comfortable and the room was huge
Breakfast was buffet-style and the choice was above average No restaurant open for evening meals
No bar open
Unfortunately the walls were paper-thin so heard everything from adjacent rooms.
- Gordon (8/5): Will come back - Clean and tidy
Breakfast good Heating needs to be replaced in bedroom
- Hayley (10/5): -
- steven (8/5): - Breakfast was great Bedroom was freezing tiny beds
