Guest Reviews
- Randy (8/5): - Nicely restored and modernized hotel within walking distance of downtown dining and river walk.
- sheryl (10/5): - beautiful area
- Verified traveler (4/5): Traveler - Service was non existent
No one there when we arrived to check us in
No one answered the phone at the number that a sign said to call
No one attending to the breakfast bar
- Carson (2/5): - Worst meal ever
- Leslie (8/5): - The staff could have been friendlier. I needed ice, and the only way to get it is to ask for it at the front desk. They have to go get it from the kitchen. Both times I asked for it, they seemed a little put off for me doing it.
- janette (6/5): - Dining was over rated. Both food and efficient service. But friendly.
- Gary (10/5): - I always enjoy staying at the Historic Grand Union Hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Return Trip Did Not Disappoint - 2nd trip to Grand Union. Despite bad weather had a great stay. Incredible step back into history in a 140 year old historic building. Great pillows and towels! Nicely renovated and maintained. Again, their restaurant may be the highlight of our stay!
- Sheila (8/5): - we had a delightful 3-day, 2-night stay in fort benton, both nights at grand union
- Elaine (10/5): - The historic building on the Missouri River at the headwater of navigation, the friendly service and the walking path highlighting the history of the area made me excited to return next year!
- colleen (10/5): - Friendly, helpful and accommodating staff!
- AARON (8/5): - We celebrated my husband retirement at the hotel. It was perfectly done and we were very pleased with our evening and stay. Would do it again.
- Tom (10/5): - Great place even better people
- Arielle (10/5): - What a gem! We enjoyed good food, cocktails, history, coffee, and river views! Can’t wait to have an excuse to come stay again!
- Genevieve (10/5): - We love
fFort Benton...the Grand Union was clean, neat and friendly...we were sorry the dining room was not open but maybe next time. We had a lovely one night there.

- Sarah (10/5): A lovely stay - Our room was absolutely beautiful. It was clean, quiet and had an amazing view of the river. Sarah, the lady who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. The bed was very comfortable and the jetted tub was a bonus. I will absolutely stay there again. A wonderful way to spend an anniversary.
- Judy (8/5): - The hotel is very lovely. The food was fantastic and the service was great. The bed was a little less than comfortable but everything else was amazing. Would recommend staying in this lovely hotel.
- Andrew (10/5): - Sick history. Fire food. 100 percent would go back.
- Cynthia (10/5): - very quaint with a lot of history! Great view of the sunrise over the river.
- Zeke (10/5): - There is so much history here, a great walking trail along the Missouri River and the fall colors were really showing off. The restaurant was amazing. We had a suite that looked out on the river, absolutely gorgeous.
- Marie (10/5): - It was like stepping back in time 150 years but with modern amenities. Very well maintained and beautiful, right on the river. A quiet oasis..
- Marilyne (10/5): - This was an old hotel and over priced but since it was the old game in town you had to pay.
- Brian (10/5): - Beautiful restored old hotel on the Missouri River in a quiet little Montana town. Doesn’t get much better than that
- Bennie (10/5): - Beautiful
- wendy (10/5): - Room is cute. A fridge would be nice but not sure where to put it. Easy check in and out. Great linens and bath supplies. Good coffee and fancy muffin in the morning. The restaurant is very expensive, food ok and wait staff excellent. It’s right in town with wonderful location on the river. Love the history of the hotel and Ft Benton.
- Patti (10/5): - Friendly staff, clean hotel…food, grounds, room and overall appearance fantastic! Will definitely stay here again!
- LANA (10/5): Beautiful Historic Hotel - Enjoyed our stay in this beautiful historic hotel. Great service, clean, comfortable beds, and lots of history around it.
- Christina (6/5): - What we liked was its history and its location along the water. Didnt like the lack of attentiveness of staff, and over priced for the experience. It wasnt a bad place, we liked it, it was probably the best in Fort Benton. It was not worth the high rate.
- Dorota (10/5): - Beautiful room and food in restaurant was very good. Very nice hotel.
- Jacqie (10/5): - This hotel is so charming! It gives you the feel that you’ve stepped back in time, but has all the modern conveniences. Getting a jacuzzi tub was a special surprise!
My husband was celebrating a big birthday year, and I could not be happier with our stay!
- robert (10/5): - The Grand Union was a great example of an old western hotel. The restaurant was great too
- Tassie (10/5): - We had a great stay at the historic Grand Union!
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Quaint and old fashioned, staff was great
- Amy (10/5): Historic Digs - Really cool historic hotel, beautifully restored. The restaurant is expensive, but they have an outstanding chef. We had one of the best meals we've ever had from California to Chicago and beyond.
- Kathleen (10/5): - This is a beautiful, well maintained historic building. Very lovely stay.
- Catherine (10/5): - Rooms authentically and tastefully renovated. Spacious room, comfortable bed, nice amenities. Restaurant with ambience but too expensive for meals provided. Staff friendly and accommodating. Would stay here again but look for dining elsewhere.
- Mary (10/5): Sleep where you are steeped in history - This is a charming historic hotel with a wonderful, friendly staff. The dining room is pricey, but the meal was delicious. The Grand Union is walking distance to all of Fort Benton's amazing historic sites and museums.
- Richard (10/5): - Beautiful character hotel. Staff, and local merchants are all very friendly… A real small town feel.
- Louise (6/5): - We were excited to be staying at this historical, steamboat-era hotel in a typical Western town. However, our stay did not meet our rosy expectations. The room, looking out over main street (noisy at times), was small, dark and awkwardly laid out. The small bathroom was not updated for a while, and dark. And everywhere, there were little notes to remind guests that they would be charged for damages to towels or sheets or whatever. It did not feel welcoming and fun - and kind of dusty and not sparkling fresh. Coffee and a (delicious) muffin were served for guests in the morning, but the Lewis and Clark room where you had to go was dingy and again, dark. Our biggest problem occurred when we tried to have dinner at the hotel's restaurant. We had reservations and a great waiter, but after two hours of waiting we finally received our entrees and then one of them was inedible (all fat). We were not charged, but all in all the dinner was a total failure. Kitchen was completely overwhelmed. This was to be a special occasion stay for us and it really did not materialize.
The back patio overlooking the river was lovely.
- Russell (6/5): - My disappointment was pretty minor. I have stayed here before, and I love Fort Benton and this hotel. But for as much as they charge, customers should expect more than basic television. All I wanted to do was watch the NBA Playoffs, which was on TNT, and I couldn't get it. And those little coffee pots you normally find in hotel rooms are not expensive, either. But overall, I still love staying there.
- Marc (10/5): - Beautiful City, not many dining options on a Monday. Wish the museums were open. Union Hotel is so nice!!
- Steve (10/5): - Wonderfully restored historic hotel in a beautiful rural town on the Missouri River.
- Patricia (8/5): - I love staying at this Hotel. However, I was very disappointed with the restaurant this time. Not up to it's standard.
- Brandon (10/5): - The history
- kathleen m (10/5): - wonderful heritage property, very comfortable beds, super location, great restaurant
- Phillip (10/5): - History of the property and surrounding area.
- Cari (10/5): - Beautiful hotel!
- Katherine (10/5): - It was escape to the past.
- Valerie (10/5): 6th Anniversary - We had a fabulous anniversary stay. The view, the building, the river & walking path are amazing. Dinner had beef. In the past was minimal & not so good. Excellent dinner, did not like the presentation of meat plopped on mashed potatoes. Nothing to accompany. Anything else is a charge. Appetizer of mussrls was tasty but literally microscopic to find the mussels
Felt the dining room had improved but overpriced. Muffin breakfast was completely inadequate for a diabetic.
- Sierra (10/5): - Lovely stay. Great dinner and brunch. Clean room.
- John (10/5): We Will Return - Everything from check-in to check-out including cleanliness - staff - dinner in the restaurant and coffee and muffins before we left was PERFECT!
- Harlan (10/5): - Beautiful properly, lovingly maintained or restored. Fine service, excellent restaurant. Try the roast bison.
- Suzanne (10/5): - It is a beautiful and historic hotel. Our room was very clean and well-maintained. It was very quiet and comfortable. We love this hotel!
- Danette (10/5): Our stay here was fantastic - This is a beautiful hotel. The saloon and restaurant are wonderful and our room was fantastic. The staff are friendly. We loved our visit to Fort Benton!
- Dennis (10/5): - very Nice would go back
- Amy (8/5): - It was a great get away and a perfect location. Parking was a little cramped up for a bigger pickup but we made do.
- Ledean Marie (10/5): - This unique historic hotel is a must see in Fort Benton. The room was well appointed and the bathroom clean. The pillows could be better, though.
- Nancy (10/5): - Lovely historic hotel right on the river
- Michael (10/5): - Such a treat to stay in a piece of history! The old charm is all around and it’s special. Great ac, and a great steak in the hotel’s restaurant.
- Mark (10/5): - Excellent experience. The Montana history comes alive being in Fort Benton. Wonderful
- David (10/5): - Beautifully restored property Lovely view of the Missouri River from the tables in the back yard.
- Barry (10/5): Great old west hotel! - Wonderful spot on the river with a great restaurant. Felt like I went back in time! Service was excellent and the price was reasonable. The owners were around and very hospitable
- Richard (10/5): - This is an amazing location along the Missouri River. The hotel is an excellent condition, and has beautiful grounds along a river pathway. Staff is exceptionally professional and courteous.
- Ila (8/5): - The hotel itself is well kept & the light fittings etc. are like they were back in the early days, but they look new. We assume there has been some considerable expense to update, but still be authentic. The bed was very comfortable, the elevator was fast & efficient & we felt that much caring went into making the rooms set up, pleasant, orderly & comfortable. The area around the hotel is amazing. It’s lovely to watch the river & enjoy the scenery around it. Parking was a bit of a problem for us as there could have been spaces available if two motorcycles had not parked so far apart they took up 3 spaces. It seems someone at the door of the hotel could remedy that problem during early check in hours. I guess a small frig in the rooms would take away from decor but it surely would have been nice to have a place to keep drinks cool during hot weather. We found it a bit inconvenient to have to get ice from the restaurant in the hours they are open. Over all……I wish we could have stayed longer. One nite us just not enough to enjoy all of the ambience there is in the hotel & surroundings.
- Claire (10/5): - The hotel was absolutely beautiful! It was clearly lovingly restored and feels grand. Just like stepping back in time - but with amenities! The dinner at the on site restaurant was wonderful, staff was friendly and the room well appointed and comfortable. It is situated right on the riverwalk - with outdoor dining and an easy stroll along the history trail. Had a wonderful stay!
- Doug (8/5): - The windows in the room were very dirty.
- Heidi (10/5): - I love the history of the building and the feeling of going back in time. I appreciate how they have kept the history of the building and it is an easy walk out their front door to see the town's history.
- James (10/5): - We love the history, setting, rooms, and look of the Grand Union Hotel. Our third time here and would love to have stayed longer.
- Lee (10/5): Grand Union Hotel, Ft Benton - Elegant historical and well kept hotel. Evenness of the floors are a little wonky but expected for its age. Beautiful setting, wonderful food and a great stay.
- FL (6/5): Think Twice. - First, the hotel wouldn't take a $100 gift card our kids bought us. The clerk at the desk had an attitude of not my problem and if you don't like it, LEAVE. I stayed anyway after driving over 300 miles to get there. I was happy leaving after 3 days there and I didn't spend any more than I had to in that hotel. No meals, no extras, nothing. Then I called HOTELS.COM only to get someone that could barely speak ENGLISH and was no help at all. Not happy at all with the Grand Union or Hotels .Com
- Brent (10/5): - Historic Hotel in Fort Benton is a bucket list stay for anyone who is a history buff. The restaurant is fantastic.
- Jesse (10/5): - Old, beautiful building on the river. Warm rooms, lovely complimentary soaps and lotions. Very quiet. Highly recommend
- Pat (10/5): - The Grand Union is a lovely hotel. I felt cozy and welcome from the minute I walked in the door. I spent two nights and got the best sleep I have had in a very long time. It is a hidden gem in Fort Benton, Montana!!!
- Alina (8/5): - This hotel is beautiful and the historic aspect is what draws me. It's also in a beautiful area with a rich history. Unfortunately the chef they had when I stayed there 8 years ago is no longer at their restaurant, and the current chef, although good, is not nearly as talented as the previous one.
- Timothy (10/5): - We had a great time visiting Ft. Benton capped off with wine, dinner and sleep at the hotel. Continental breakfast next morning was more than adequate as we prepared to visit more of Montana. Staffing levels however did not allow serving us outside with beer and wine on a beautiful September evening…darn it!
- wendy (8/5): - old old historic property... also a little long in the tooth
- Bruce (8/5): - A very nice historic hotel right on the Missouri River.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Old style hotel with much of the feeling of a hotel from Lewis & Clark times. Many updates, very comfortable. Plus great restaurant for breakfast (free) & stupendous dinner choices. We were here twice this week, one before & once after our canoe/camping adventure. We’d definitely stay here again should be ever be out this way again.
- Art (10/5): Repeat relaxation. - Very clean and friendly. We have stay at least once a year for at least nine years. Always comfortable and peaceful. Nothing like ending a nice day with a cold drink or hot coffee on the patio by the river.
- Victoria (10/5): History at its best - real & comfortable - Long wanted to visit and expore Fort Benton, the historic terminus point for Missouri River steamboats bringing resources into the US and Canadian west. The Grand Union Hotel provided me with a beautiful and comfortable room and a charming buffet breakfast. I would happily stay there again.
- will (10/5): - I loved the historical nature of the building, its been well maintained and the food was fabulous. Great stay
- Ricardo (10/5): - The antique nature of the hotel was so nice and it smelled old but not musty at all. The restaurant was first rate because of the combination of great food, great service, and sitting on the back porch with a view of the river. It’s not very far from Great Falls and it’s definitely worth the 40 minute cruise!
- Alen (10/5): Alen - This Hotel has a rich history that is worth checking out. Kinda expensive for what it is. We loved it and would stay again.
- Dellasue (10/5): - This is an awesome historic hotel, had a great continental breakfast.
- charlie (10/5): - .
- Chris (10/5): - The staff and room were amazing as well as the continental breakfast in the morning. The evening walk along the river front with all the historical information was a real treat. We will definitely visit again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Always such great personalized service... above and beyond ! Thank you Cindy and Orion !
- Larry (10/5): Superb experience! - What an amazing experience, staying at the Grand Union in Fort Benton! The free "continental" breakfast was much more...eggs cooked to order, fresh fruit bowl, homemade chocolate muffin, orange juice and coffee. SO happy we stayed here.
- Patricia (10/5): - This is a beautifully restored historic hotel with a fabulous restaurant and bar. The breakfast is to die for. Staff is super courteous and accommodating.
- Laura (10/5): - Such a character full property which has been lovingly cared for and restored keeping the original features, such as saloon doors in the dining room/bar.
- Rita (10/5): Grand Union Hotel is wonderfully grand! - Wonderful! Perfect in every way!
Gracious hosts, beautiful old world ambience!
Friendly little town too!
- Craig (10/5): - The Grand Union is a step back in history. Beautiful and well maintained. The Chef is fantastic.
- Melissa (10/5): - This historic property has been lovingly restored to it's past grand state. We will be back for sure. The restaurant had fabulous food!
- David (10/5): - The Grand old lady is in pretty good shape for being over 100 years old. Very nice (modern) rooms, good staff, great food and beautiful setting along the Misouri River.
- Bob (10/5): - beautiful restoration and its history
- Kathleen (10/5): - The hotel was a wonderful step back in time.
- Cheryl (10/5): - I really liked our room and the view of river. I did inquire for a box fan
I used the auto fan in room from thermostat but it kept Turing off.
Suggestion
Coffee available early
Better continental breakfast
Overall
A very nice stay
Lovely town and museums
We were disappointed that the interpretative center was closed on Saturday
- Kelly John (10/5): - Clean crisp hotel with friendly staff.
- Evan (10/5): - Nice place. Too bad they didn't serve dinner on Tuesdays.
- Stephen Louis (10/5): - Historic hotel restored to its original glory.
