Guest Reviews
- Nicholas (10/5): Great value, great food and great hospitality - We stayed for three nights and really enjoyed our stay. Mihonseki is a small but very interesting fishing village with a lot of character, the beautiful Miho shrine and fascinating daily shinto ceremony. We stayed in the annex which is about 5 mins walk from the main hotel - a bit like staying in someone's old house, we were slightly sceptical at first but soon settled in and really enjoyed it. The food in the main hotel (breakfast and dinner) was excellent, with the dinner focused on local crab, fish and seafood. The staff were very friendly and polite and we would come back without any hesitation. We very much liked the old fashioned character of the place. Possibly some people might prefer somewhere more shiny and new.
- Mark (10/5): - Very friendly. They also accommodated eating allergies.
Lovely quiet location. Nothing
- Alshee Chen (10/5): -

- Laura (10/5): Unforgettable - The staff were above and beyond, made me feel like home. This is the real Japanese hospitality. I can’t thank them enough to make my time perfect there. I wish I can come back any time soon
- Thomas (10/5): A beautiful interlude, if you'll allow it to surprise you. - First of all, shake the idea that you're in Matsue. That may be what it says on the address card, but the experience is completely different. You're sandwiched between the mountains and the sea, and the city is far away. You're in a quiet, private little slice of rural Japan where the sunrise breaks silently over the wharf and the black kites steal the castoffs from the fishermen on the rocks. If you're very lucky, and very still, you may hear an osprey hunting for its breakfast before the larger boats rumble to life. The old man who waits for you in reception greets you with warmth and enthusiasm, and what strength time has stolen from his hands has not yet abandoned his smile, which betrays the pleasure and pride at the history he sustains in this small Inn which is older than my country. Wake early, and travel just a few minutes along the coast to the small lighthouse where you can sit in silence and admire distant Mount Daisen, a prominent silhouette even from across the Sea of Japan. Any criticism I could offer completely misses the point of why you're here. If you want to be at the heart of the urban bustle, you wouldn't have traveled to distant Shimane. It only breaks my heart that rural Japan is struggling against the current of modernity and the poverty is becoming evident as more opportunities leave to set up shop in Osaka and Tokyo.
- Anthony (9/5): A wonderful Japanese experience - Perfectly authentic property overlooking the bay in a remote area of Shimane. Hosts are wonderful, food is wonderful, bathroom refurbished and has excellent water pressure.
Sunsets are breathtaking. Saw a submarine passing right in front of my room. Nice to stir in the morning to the bells on the fishing boats returning from their early morning haul. Nothing.
- Xavier (8/5): Nice isolated place - The localisation The smell of fish in the room, but disapperead quick.
- Janet (9/5): Authentic charming fishing village. - Our most Japanese stay, with very friendly people and a great waterside location. Would have enjoyed the balcony in better weather, and the fishing rods. The shrine, virtually next door, was magical at dusk, with us only 2 other people there. An unspoilt little village. They evening meal was amazing, all fish, but not for me. My husband ate quite a lot and the Japanese family eating at the next table loved it. We then had all fish for breakfast which we didn't eat and felt a bit bad about that, as such an effort had been made by our lovely hosts.
- Maxine (10/5): Authentic Japanese hotel, wonderful food, excellent staff, comfortable lodging.we were housed in our own house down the - We wanted to get off the tourist track and boy did we! Beautiful spot at the end of a peninsula. Probably should have rented a car, but that was our mistake.
- Anson (9/5): A highlight of our tour of the Japan Sea coast - A wonderful Riokan in the tiny fishing town Mihonoseki. The breakfast and evening meals were delicious sea feasts. The room large with separate sleeping and day sections and a great view over the fishing harbour. There is a wonderful shinto shrine Miho which is important in the area without does the excess crowds.

- Mike (10/5): - Hello People,
If you want to visit the Fukumankan in Mihonoseki, so you should have a car also!
Its a small village, no conbini!
Busses comes, but not so often.
The food is 90% fish! You should love fish!
A kind Familie does own and work in the Hotel, the experience was amazing !
You need maybe 2 days for the walkingway in the mountains and the village !
So enjoy the Fukumankan !
Big Thank you :)
- Kem (10/5): - Loved shrine next door, nearby National Park, and fishing out front.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional - It’s a lovely place in a beautiful area and the owner is very kind and helpful. Totally recommend
- Sophie (10/5): Exceptional - What an amazing stay. The perfect small village Japanese experience. The staff were so welcoming and the location was beautiful. Day 1 we explored Mihonoseki, day 2 was an easy drive to Yuushien gardens, Matsue Castle and the Adachi Museum of Art. Traditional rooms with a view over the bay. The dinner and breakfasts were outstanding...a must if you love seafood! We highly recommend staying at Fukumakan - it has been a highlight if our trip!
- Grant (10/5): Fantastic family run Ryokan - Stayed 2 nights, great room with sea views, quiet and relaxing fishing port, excellent traditional Japanese sea food for breakfast and dinner, lovely family run Ryokan-make sure you visit the temple next door to watch the ceremony-held twice a day-highly recommend
- Carlota (5/5): Mixed - Historic home, owner was friendly and professional, responded right away to requests and change of plans Annex was different than advertised, this house was located behind the public toilet with now water view and not really equipped to comfortably host guests, broken lights etc, insuffient heating as tempertures dropped.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - The meal was very delicious and the view from the room was very good~~
- Wise (10/5): Great value hotel - Clean and spacious beautiful sea-view room with balcony, great shower with brand new bathroom, nice and friend staff, free private parking, excellent crab dinner, super value, will come back again.
- Roy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (10/5): Opened up my sliding doors and watched the fishing boats pull in at 4:30am in total quiet. Special. - Absolute waterfront over quiet fishing port. Accommodation next door to large temple complex with morning and afternoon ceremonies including female dancers. Great walks from front door to lighthouse and through mountains. Host drove me to and from airport and to train station for a trip to Adachi. Overall best place I stayed after travelling one month solo. Dinner was spectacular. Bill Evans in the background, wonderful seafood, wonderful view. A really peaceful place where you could do as much as you like or not. Three nights not enough to completely wind down.
- Matúš (10/5): Exceptional - Family accomodation with excellent value on beautiful spot. Fantastic sea food and very friendly approach. Wholeheartedly recommended. Thank you!
- Andrew (10/5): Wonderful! - The view from the room was stunning. It Made for a perfect place to really experience this beautiful part of Japan and try the local seafood. I was also impressed by how English friendly it was for a more off the beaten path location. I got to go out on a boat dropping some fishermen off to an island which made for a highlight of my trip thanks to the owner of Fukumakan. Nothing.
- Michael (8/5): No doubt about it, the location of Fukumakan is just fantastic. A lovely quiet fishing village, non-touristy, with a vie - The location is brilliant, room was comfortable, staff and host were great, food was good. The meals were mixed, some very good, a couple less good
- Laura (10/5): The traditional Japanese coastal trip of a lifetime - Beautiful setting, so clean, comfortable and spacious, staff were so friendly and helpful, we had the best time! Nothing
- Sandra (9/5): Superb - Everyone at the hotel was lovely and looked after us very well. Lots of seafood for dinner and also breakfast, and both were generous. Our room had a sitting area and a great view of the harbour. In addition to our private bathroom, there was an onset style bath, which you can use privately with your partner.
- Sharon (10/5): Special stay in Mihonoseki - We stayed. In the annex of the hotel. It was very comfortable. The staff are very hospitable and friendly, with attention to detail. Staying at Fukumakan is an experience of the best of traditional hospitality in a seaside village. We had half board (breakfast and dinner), which was traditional and plentiful. We love seafood, so dinners were perfect for us. We appreciated that dinners were different on each night. Pick-up and drop-off at Sakaiminato station was also appreciated, as was information about the festival, which we were lucky enough to be present for. Nothing. We loved our stay.
- Marouan (9/5): Superb -
- Neen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michaelplumley (9/5): Superb -
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Roberto (10/5): Exceptional - A real discovery: Mihonoseki is a special place, a fishermen's village away from everything and still quite convenient to reach. I stayed at one of the Fukumakan annex houses. A beautiful old Japanese house, perfectly maintained with all conforts one might need. Lovely views of the port from the first floor.
Breakfast and dinner are also a special treat in Japanese fish cuisine.
Highly recommended
- David (10/5): Best of travel - Proprietor and his staff are outstanding. The most interesting surroundings and “real Japanese” feeling of our trip.
- Geoff (10/5): Perfect stay in a lovely village - The authenticity of the host, our house and the town of minonoseki
- Geoff (10/5): Authentic Japan in a tiny fishing village - Mihonoseki is authentic Japan, and the owner and hotel are very much part of this town. We stayed in an annex which is one of the houses three minutes walk to hotel. Large house easily fits four, well equipped. Breakfast and dinner both fantastic. It’s a bit out of the way and would best suit people with a car, but a perfect place to base ourselves for a few nights.
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful place - It’s simple and traditional friendliness, the view, the location.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are incredibly kind and accommodating. The accommodation itself was absolutely beautiful; because I am traveling with my pet, I was in the Annex, which exceeded my wildest dreams in terms of comfort and privacy. The town is a small seaside area in a quiet bay, with a gorgeous Shinto temple and absolutely beautiful historic area. I can't wait to come back once I'm better at Japanese, I suspect there's much more to be discovered in this area!
Oooh, and oh my god, the food! I went for the half board, and was absolutely blown away by the variety, quality, and presentation of my meals. I am so grateful for my time here. Everything was incredible.
- Lorenzo (9/5): Superb - I loved the location, the owner was also kind enough to take me on his boat which was extremely fun! The public bath is super relaxing. All the staff was very kind!
- Michelle (10/5): magical atmosphere and delicious meals - wi-fi, comfortable futons, fresh air and close to the sea, exceptional seafood, nice bathtub, big hot water dispenser for tea, nice snacks the window to the bathroom did not close all the way. it might be broken?
- Ross (9/5): enjoyable hotel in the hills - no shoes on/shoes off. centrally located. welcoming, friendly staff. no cafes open nearby, had to drive 15 mins to nearest food and stock up for 24 hours. if we didn’t have a car we would have been very hungry !
- Danny (8/5): Very good -
- Peter (10/5): Charming and relaxed in remote village.. - We got a beautiful and newly renovated old house in this charming village. Breakfast is good. A bottle of hood sake as welcome gift was most appreciated. The house has a view on the harbour on both levels. There is a sound system and a selection of Jazz CD’s to play. We got shuttle service to the train station. Nothing that makes it less than a 10.
- Lev (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Ms (10/5): - Hotel owners very friendly and helpful. Meals, breakfast and supper, delicious. Environment quiet and comfortable. An enjoyable stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good and quiet - Service is great and food is ok. Overall it is a good and quiet hotel to stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- CHUN TAI (10/5): - Warm service! Provide the pick-up service from JR station.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A perfect place to relax and enjoy traditional Japan. Beautiful scenery. Great staff. Excellent food. Japanese style rooms, some with incredible views.
- guidoAntwerp (10/5): What a gem! - Mihonoseki is a quiet and small fishing village. Staying here was a relief after visiting the bustling and crowded Japanese big cities.
We stayed 3 nights in the annex of Fukumakan Hotel and enjoyed a perfect sleep.
The annex is a separate house, about 100 m from the main building.
The owner and his family are very service minded and extremely friendly .
The breakfast and diner are a real feast!
We feel extremely lucky that we could stay at this place.
- anneue (10/5): It's like being in old Japan with modern conveniences - Kama, the host, is amazing--always making sure that every wish expressed or anticipated is fulfilled. He upgraded us to a harbor-view 200-year-old spacious Japanese home that we loved. We loved the quiet of this little "hamlet", away from the city of Matsue. Our traditional dinner and breakfast were very abundant, especially with the fresh seafood that his boat gathers every day.
- ckm818 (8/5): Base for Sojourn to Oki Island - It's impossible to fly to Yonago Airport and embark ferry to Oki Islands Geopark on the same day. That's why we picked Ryokan Fukumakan.
A great choice to stay overnight in the vicinity of Saigo port. Seafront location with chance of coastal walks if you have energy.
We even received an email reminder from the hotel one day before arrival, reminding me to book the dinner at a very reasonable price. Don't miss the chance to have onsen at the family room; we love that way of recharging ourselves before our Oki Islands adventure.
- Jan-OlofO (10/5): Fantastic Ryakon excellent service - This is my best Ryakon experience in Japan! I have not visited any hotel or Ryakon in Japan with this service level it was exceptional. If I could give it six stars I would do that.
I ordered a room with shared bathroom I received a complete house with kitchen, micro oven, fridge and washing machine. There was bathroom with shower and toilette included in the facility. There was a small TV and a table with four chairs. Upstairs was the sleeping area sleeping on the floor typical for a ryakon. There were air-con system for both down stair and up stair rooms with great capacity. You ca easily cool a room down to 20 degree Celsius if you want. Really appreciated during the hot Japanese summer. There was no WIFI in these building one has to go to the main building for this service but it was available free of charge.
I had ordered the breakfast and dinner program. I can tell you the food was absolute excellent. Breakfast can be Japanese or more traditional with yogurt, fruit, toast actually how you would like to eat breakfast! Dinner was everything the sea could bring to the table and a glass of wonderful sake. I did say the food was excellent it is also substantial. You will eat a lot at this place.
The couple running this place are very service minded and friendly. The manager took care of my car problem calling the car company and sorted out all questions with the insurance, to do that my car had to stay at the Ryakon. The manager drove the to the ferry terminal for the Oki Island ferries and picked me up a again when I returned in the evening. At dinner time in the evening the car problem was solved while I had a nice day at Oki Islands. I do recommend a visit at this nice Ryakon you will more than satisfied.
- SHINAE (10/5): - It was the best experience ever!!
- BBSabina (10/5): Beautiful traditional ryokan - My sister and I really enjoyed our stay. The view from the room was stunning. The host was very friendly. The fresh seafood was divine. Would recommend it if you want to get out of the city and relax.
- summ3r (4/5): Interesting apartment, lovely meal, dirty beds. Very disappointing. - We booked the Fukumakan hotel in Matsue online and the process was fast and easy. I confirmed that there would be parking for the car by sending an email and I received a prompt response that parking would not be a problem.
We had booked the Japanese Chalet for 2 persons. When we arrived we were excited to see that it was a small house on the main street facing the harbour, and that we would have the whole thing to ourselves! The hotel owner kept asking us, confirming that we were only two people, and that the apartment was only for two persons which seemed odd. Inside, the house was very well appointed with separate bath, western toilet, kitchen, sitting room with a small television and electric blanket for cold nights, and at the far end the bedroom with two futons. I was a little confused and disappointed because the photo on the hotel's website had advertised a seating area in front of a beautiful, large window looking out over the harbour, and as you can see from the photos I've attached, we clearly didn't have that. Exploring the house later we discovered that the beautiful window is upstairs and the space there was not available for us to use. Evidently that space is only available for bookings of more than 2 persons. That was disappointing.
We had two meals provided by the hotel: dinner and breakfast. Both were traditional Japanese and very good. Dinner was fresh crab, served two ways, along with five other courses plus rice. Among the breakfast items offered were pickled vegetables, soup, some egg, rice, and smoked fish. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and delicious! We especially appreciated our waitress. She spoke English and was very friendly, kind, and helpful.
And now the reasons we will never go back there. I had booked this hotel on the strength of the overwhelmingly positive reviews here on tripadvisor so I found our experience surprising and very disappointing. I was very cold when we first arrived at the apartment and thought that I would warm up under the covers of the bed. I pulled back the quilt to find not proper sheets but 2 brown velour blankets serving as top and bottom sheet instead. "Oh well, no problem", I thought. And then I actually LOOKED at the blankets. Both of them were covered in hair. Long, black hair, short black hair... It was disgusting. (For the record my husband is balding and I have short, brown hair so even if we had slept on those blankets those hairs weren't ours.) I checked my husband's futon and the situation was the same - velour blankets covered in hair.
I reported the problem to the lady at the desk when we went for dinner, showing her one of the hairs I had wrapped in a kleenex, and instead of sending someone to deal with it they gave me a bag with 4 new sheets to make up the beds myself. I'm not too proud to make a bed but I think that for the price we paid I shouldn't have had to make up the beds.
In any case when I went to make up the beds with the new sheets I discovered more problems. The first thing I discovered was that the new sheets that they had given me were stained. Brown, nasty stains. I couldn't get a clear picture of all of hairs and stains but if you look at the picture I've attached of the sheets you get the drift. I don't even want to think of what those stains were. The second thing I discovered was that both quilt covers were stained yellow across the top from age and from where people's hands had been and yes, also covered in hairs. It was gross. What to do? I had already tried to get the nasty sheets replaced once, and because the apartment is across the harbour from the hotel it would have meant going back out late at night in the cold, walking across, trying to explain, and being given yet more sheets. I had been driving all day and I was too tired. I went to bed fully dressed. There was no way I was going to get into that bed in my jammies, and I went to sleep thinking, "EW, EW, EW!"
The next morning the hotel owner apologized profusely for the problem with the sheets but it was too little, too late.
The village is interesting to explore. In the morning we watched the hawks turning lazy circles over the harbour, and the local ladies were very kind letting us watch them hang the day's catch of squid to dry. If you go, look out for the married rocks along the shore just west of the the villiage, and go visit the lighthouse at the end of the point. The coastline all along the way and the lighthouse are magnificent. Just watch out for dirty sheets and hairs in the bed if you stay at this hotel.
- Travel2505 (10/5): Great place & excellent host! - If you want to experience Japanese hospitality and enjoy ancient history of shrines, this place would be highly recommandabele. The host is extremely funny and generous, the lo ;-) dge was very traditional with all modern comfort and the view was very nice. We would certainly come again!
Thanks for the wonderfull memories, greetings from Antwerp, Belgium!
- Edward609 (10/5): Fukuman Takahashi : a marvellous host - Fukuman is an ancient establishment with multiple properties; we took a seaview room with bathroom in the primary house --yes it is not a 5-star- but there is also an ancient and a modernized house. Meals are served in the primary house; excellent, abundant, ultra-fresh seafood .Re. "fresh" : the fishing boats unload directly in front & you can see Mr Fukuman picking and choosing your dinner directly from the unloading bins.
Wonderful walks with panoramic views are the year-round attraction but there is also boating and swimming of course, The totally genuine, totally charming owner is upholding secular traditions in a very personal way--he will provide whatever he can to make you happy and speaks enough English --a rarity in such places. Stay there if the trip is convenient, stay there if it is not --will be back . Edward Luttwak
