I thought they would clean or change the linen in the room. My niece and I had to endure the cold shower before entering the onsen. The staff said they were not prepared for the sudden cold. I was a little taken back since it was already fall/winter.

- Shuwen (10/5): - The Ryokan is very well located and it’s less than 10mins drive to the ski field. The room is spacious for Japanese standard. The Onsen is very authentic and surprisingly quiet. The staff are very friendly and warm. We will return for our next trip.

- Kristine (3/5): Bad experience. Wish we booked a different place. - The location in Hakuba was good and close to the mountains we were traveling to. They have good onsen outdoor/indoor with a sauna, rather small in size, nothing special. The staff knew zero English. There were absolutely no food facilities available. Even though our booking said we could have pay-for breakfast at the facility, they said it wasn’t available. Also no dinner available even for pay. We drove around the city for an hour looking for an open place to eat. All the places listed on Yelp and Google maps as open were not. It was a ghost town and staff was completely not helpful and not considerate of that.

- Peter (10/5): Exceptional service - a home away from home - Best onsen - Horio-san and staff were exceptional- nothing was a problem during our stay - On check out they offered a lift to Escal Plaza when a large maxi taxi wasn’t available - the combined staff helped us pack and waved farewell like a family departure. You will be well looked after. Warm rooms - comfortable beds…After a day’s skiing settle into what is regarded as the BEST onsen in the district. Very good restaurant serves Barbecue and Shabu Shabu - Wide choice for breakfast - very very short 40 metre walk to shuttle bus stop to skifields - Very close to local shops and two other restaurants (Ramen) Ryujin are currently adding a new accommodation wing with a number of new luxury private onsen rooms. Its intimate - private - not crowded. You get very personal service. I plan on returning in future. perhaps the only issue for some people is the location requires catching the shuttle buses to Goryu slopes - Ryujin is close (takes maybe 3/4 minutes drive to reach Escal Plaza) - Buses come 30min and hourly intervals - but dont miss the last bus back from slopes at 5:30pm. In any case taxis are usually easy to call.

Super friendly and helpful stuff- the gentleman let us go to onsen despite we already check out in the morning. The indoor/ outdoor onsen is so relaxing- especially after a loooong day of skiing. Nothing much to be honest, if I must say something then I’d say the breakfast option is limited but it’s no biggie to us.
- ATSUKO (10/5): Awesome place!!! - The inn proprietors were exceedingly helpful, friendly and kind. We felt very welcomed. The onsen bath was beautiful and very relaxing. They provided some nice spa products that I enjoyed. The breakfast buffet was delicious with many local products used. Dinner at the restaurant was colorful and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Rachel (8/5): Nice Onsen and Spacious Rooms - The on-site onsen was awesome and we enjoyed the breakfast at the hotel. The rooms had a lot of space and everyone was super friendly here. It would be tough to get around without a car here. Most of the bars/restaurants were a bit away from the hotel. If you can't sleep on a firm mattress I definitely wouldn't recommend staying here.

We were looking for an authentic Japanese experience and this hotel exceeded our expectations. We were so sad to leave. We used the onsen everyday and enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast every morning before skiing. The location was great, and we will definitely be back!!!!!!!!

The onsen facilities were great and both male and female outdoor onsens available so no need to alternate. The room was big and spacious and very clean. - Chadwick (10/5): Must stay when in Hakuba - We stayed over the new year, and during the January 1st earthquake. This was our first time visiting Japan and we speak zero Japanese. We are so thankful to have stayed at this hotel with such an excellent team. We have done a lot of travel and we mean it when we say the staff at this hotel were the kindest and most supportive we have ever experienced. They had portable devices to translate and allow us to communicate, as well as a great staff member that spoke English! We had many questions with our ski and snowboard gear delivery, ordering taxis, and helping identify a new route to get to our next destination with travel disrupted due to the earthquake that the team enthusiastically helped with. On our departure day we missed our shuttle pick up from the hotel, and Kenji kindly drove us 15 minutes to the Hakuba Valley station himself just in time to make our transport to Nagano! He was a hero to us, and this was just one of the great experiences we had with this accommodation. Also the restaurant and Onsen are excellent!
- William (8/5): A great Onsen and staff made this a comfortable stay overall. - The Onsen being on site was a very nice touch for relaxation. It has a lovely outdoor portion and with the snow on the ground, it is hard to beat. The staff were also very friendly and helped us make multiple reservations including dinner and a taxi to depart. The location was mediocre if you want to go skiing or snowboarding. You can either walk 20-25 minutes uphill to Goryu resort or you can take two separate busses that don’t seem to have a regular timetable. Also, there is not much evening dining in close (less than 15 minutes) walking distance.

- Rebecca (10/5): Amazing onsen and restaurant - The indoor and outdoor onsens were amazing, especially when it was snowing outside. The food at the on-site restaurant was delicious. There was a 7-Eleven just up the road so that was very convenient. The staff were so friendly too! The location was a little hard to get to from the local train station with a lot of luggage, but we made the 2km walk towing our suitcases and ski gear 😉
- Gordon (7/5): Lovely traditional Japanese accommodation! - We really enjoyed the onsen and the friendly staff. Additionally, there is a laundry facility (400 yen) and extra shared toilet and sink area on the accommodation floor (extra toilets on the ground floor as well), which were great to have access to. We did not have a meal option included (as the children don't really make the most out of a Japanese breakfast), but there was free hot coffee and hot water each morning (we brought our own fresh milk and kept it in the refrigerator in our room). We travelled with our three children and bought some instant hot chocolate powder with us. We were able to use the hot water, spoons and cups so the children could also have a warm morning drink at the table downstairs in reception. We were able to pick up some quick breakfast at a 7-11 just down the road. We ate 1 evening meal at the Yakiniku restaurant at Ryujin Onsen. We all really enjoyed this and would recommend dinner there if you are staying the evening The only thing that would have made our stay better, was if all the furniture was fully functional and if there was additional space to hang jackets and wet ski gear. The wall hooks (only 5 hooks with some hangers) for hanging jackets and wet ski gear fell off the wall. This piece of furniture was unfortunately broken when we arrived in the room. Some additional space to hang wet ski gear would have been useful and we ended up hanging our ski gear on the curtain rail instead. The small floor heater under side table, would shut off after about 15 minutes and flash a small error code. This was not really an issue, as after that time, the room was warm enough, but it may bother others.
- Chiong (10/5): This place is amazing. You have to stay here!!! - Honestly an amazing place to stay all around. But what really made it exceptional was how welcoming our hosts were. They were exceptionally kind, welcoming, and hilarious! They really made it feel like a home instead of just a place to sleep. If you’re planning on being in Hakuba, this is the place to stay hands down. Onsen access was just the icing on the cake. The bus stop in front made it incredibly easy to get to the lifts and our hosts actually even gave us a ride to the gondola themselves. I loved everything.

- Anna (7/5): Good - The folks who run the place are very helpful and accommodating. It was extremely clean. While expensive, having an attatched restaurant was handy on the first night. Easy access to the onsen was wonderful, and the onsen itself was gorgeous. We were, unfortunately, next to the laundry room. The toilet in our room was fairly loud taking off the moment one sat down, and flushing it made SO MUCH noise. Please be aware that there are very few amenities within reasonable walking distance of the stay, and that pretty much everything in Hakuba is expensive.

The onsen is a HUGE plus to help unwind from a day of skiing. One of the few that allows tattoos as well. Even my five year old daughter was able to enjoy it. Will definitely be staying again!

I can’t review the fotons , we took the bed option but are room warm with a private bath. The restaurant was grill yourself style, good but not enough for a hungry American 😉. The star was the onsen , 10 or more wash spots, indoor and outdoor pools , individual tubs and sauna . The staff where great , going out of the way to make sure your stay is great.

- Verified traveler (10/5): Hospitality with big hearts! - The team at Hakuba Ryugin Onsen is Fantastic! We stayed four nights over Xmas at this 8 rooms onsen hotel that’s 3 mins drive from Hakuba Goryu ski resort. The staff are big on smiles and enthusiasm, and anticipate our every needs.... little gifts for the kids (everyday!), complimentary onsen entrance tickets for our friends who were visiting for dinner, refill my hot water bottle every time I walk past, shovel snow off our car in the morning, and most awesome was a complimentary room upgrade when they saw that our two kids were not so tiny as to fit into a room with us with two double beds. Food was yummy; traditional Japanese breakfast , and a great yakaniku restaurant on site that’s reasonably priced and good quality. The onsen (public only, no private or family baths) was a real draw to finish up a day on the ski field.

The traditional breakfast was fresh and filling and we loved experiencing traditional food. The Onsen itself was clean and beautiful and not too crowded. A shuttle comes right to the property to bring you up to the base of Hakuba Groyu if you are planning to ski. What makes this place memorable are the staff. They were warm and hospitable. We felt like we were staying with family.
- Lynnie2014 (10/5): Beautiful - We stayed here in January 2019 and it was one of our favourite places to stay in Japan. The staff were so friendly and considerate, we felt like family. The rooms were spacious, very well heated and the futons were comfortable. It has a very relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, delicious and beautifully presented. The Onsen pools were perfect, sitting in an outdoor Onsen while it snows all around is something that was so magical. The big pots were fun. It is something that I look forward to returning to. The beds were comfortable, the room had excellent heating, the staff were all AMAZING! The onsen was beautiful, especially while it was snowing outside. - wheelersgate (10/5): Fantastic! - It's a gem in the HAKUBA! Didn't know that the onsen is actually a public (self service one). Surprisingly the place is very clean and well maintained. Owner is very friendly and helpful. They serve good breakfast and the place is strategically located, there's also a good yakiniku place next door, you don't have to worry about food. It's rare that the onsen allows people with tattoos to enter, though i don't have one, i don't mind at all. This is the only onsen i had been that doesn't show any etiquette signs before entering the onsen too, i find it very casual and relax but i do hope that they'll let the patrons know basic etiquette plus nice should be kept down in the public place. I love this place a lot, especially the onsen, it's by far the best outdoor onsen i had ever been to. I'm missing the place already! Will definitely return end of this year!

Quite a surprise, beautiful indoor/outdoor onsen, yakiniku restaurant attached, easy access to Goryu/Hakuba 47 and Happo-one ski resorts, free parking, wifi was great in the rooms, ice cream vending machines in lobby with heated floors, and best of all very friendly staff with great service.
- Hannahgulu (2/5): Terrible...definitely not a hotel..it's a youth hostel. - Very bad experience in this so called hotel. It is just a cheap hostel with no facilities, just a public Onsen which is welcomed for all outsiders if they paid. The changing area is dirty in the onsen. The room is very noise even at 0300 am. The breakfast time is restricted from 0730-0800. There is no toilet in our room, we have to queue up outside the public toilet to brush the teeth. Horrible experience. It is definitely overcharged for a "hotel"....its cost usd 260 per night. Not recommend!!!!
- LimKH253 (4/5): Short Family Ski Vacation - Main reason for coming here was skiing. Getting here was easy. Shinkansen to Nagano from Tokyo, then a bus ride followed by another short bus ride. Because this was part of a much longer vacation, we had a lot of luggage and ski gear. The last 100 meters to get the luggage into the slope side hotel was a lot of work. The lobby area was filled with smokers which is annoying for a non smoking family. The front desk was also not manned so we had to wait awhile. Eventually we got our rooms that was very tiny but facing the slopes which was nice. The hotel is great for ski in and out. Food wise you have to go next door. Considering we were all here for skiing we had a great time. The hotel was ok quality.
