Guest Reviews
- Roisin (10/5): Snorkelling and rum cocktails in paradise - We loved our 3 nights here with our 6 year old. The accommodation is basic but really comfy. It really is ‘the edge of paradise’. The location is breath taking, amazing snorkelling right off the beach and the nicest and most helpful staff you could wish for who are determined to get in the island vibe. Not for ‘luxury’ seekers who want crisp, 5 star hotel vibe but perfect for people wanting to kick back and relax in a heavenly setting. Loved it all
- JAMES (10/5): - A very special place highly recommend and a experience I’ll never forget
- Louisa (10/5): - We had one of the best times of our lives on this island! Everything was just perfect. All the staff were so welcoming and kind. They prepared the most delicious food for us and even turned almost every dish on the menu into a vegetarian option just for us.
We had such a great time playing games with the bartender Joram – also he made the best drinks and fulfilled every wish we had.
The reef is fantastic – we saw stingrays, sharks, tons of fish, and even dolphins passing by the island one day.
The rooms are beautiful and clean, and we loved looking at the stars from our balcony every night.
We still can’t believe what we experienced during the last five days, but we will definitely be back!
- Lucy (5/5): Not as peaceful as you hope it will be - I really liked the staff, and how friendly they were. Ervin the captain of the boat makes you feel very safe, and the women in the kitchen are just lovely. And Karissa and Manfreddy are always available to speak and help out, night or day. I thought it would be a peaceful island, which is what I wanted. It only has 3 bungalows, so I thought it would be quiet. However, during the day music boats from other islands or from the mainland arrive, so their clients can fish or swim or eat or drink at the bar. So it was not the peaceful experience I wanted, and I left after one night even though I had paid for 4.
- Jeffrey (9/5): Superb - Transfer out with Douglass was great approx 45 min. Island comes into view, an oasis. Greeted with a welcome drink as soon as your feet hit the sand. Bags whisked away to our room, felt like our vacation started immediately. The staff, KK, our chef, every meal prepared to your tastes, delicious., on top of it she is a sweetheart. John, the glue of the island always there for any and everything. Such a treat to learn a little about everyone family etc. Lloyd, kind and respectful. Caught fresh lobster one day snorkeling, he kept the grounds clean daily and made us a romantic campfire the last evening. Always present and helpful. Thank you one and all for an incredible stay on Ranguana Caye. Merry Christmas
- Frederick (9/5): Amazing place highly recommended. - Amazing staff that quickly became friends incredible location!
- Gabrielle (10/5): - STAY HERE! The best experience I’ve had at any resort ever. The staff is lovely, the food is fantastic, and the island itself is right out of your wildest dream. At night, there are noises akin to what you’d hear on a ship, or deep in the woods—which may be relaxing to some and annoying go others. Also, the hot water can be an otter finicky. But trust me, you will not care! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I wouldn’t miss for anything! No other vacation has compared.
- Priyanka (10/5): I have never had an experience like I had at Ranguana Caye. It was the most relaxing trip ever. - I was a little nervous about staying here because, due to it being eco-friendly, the cabins didn't have air conditioning and the stay wasn't going to be as luxurious as some other stays I've had, but I am so glad I took a chance and we decided to stay here. It is a once in a lifetime experience, and you truly feel like you're on your very own private island. We were free to do whatever we wanted whenever we wanted, and the food and drinks were absolutely excellent. Every single thing we ate was delicious. It exceeded all of our expectations. We were able to snorkel and kayak, and my husband went fishing every day we were there (and caught something to eat each day too!). The wildlife is amazing to see, and the water is absolutely crystal clear. The staff was so friendly and helpful, and they're always around to answer questions, check to see if you're hungry/thirsty, or need anything. Allen and Lloyd make our stay remarkable, and we will be recommending this island stay for years to come! I don't believe they have turndown service, which is likely due to being eco-friendly and trying to preserve water/energy, but a little bit of cleaning in the room would have been nice, especially since the rooms get really sandy and humid quick. Also plumbing is non-traditional, so it took a bit of time to get used to the low water pressure and delicate toilets. These are small prices to pay to stay on your very own private island though.
- Richard (10/5): - Staying at this approximately 2-acre Caye/Island was amazing! Great snorkeling and swimming right off the Caye. We saw rays, sharks and all kinds of other sea life. Did I mention the amazing seafood caught by local fisherman and brought directly to the Caye? The lobster was fantastic! All the employees there were super friendly and knowledgeable too. You will not regret your stay on Ranguana Caye!
- Charles (10/5): - Great place
- Julieann (6/5): Not worth it - While Ranguana Caye is pretty, my recommendation is to go somewhere else.
Our first issue was the hot water heater in our room, Man of War. This issue was in another review from 2019, and they still haven’t fixed it. The water was either frigid or boiling hot, and while I appreciated the crew being quick to try and fix it that day, it’s been an issue for several years and should have been resolved before 2021.
Secondly were the lack of screens on the windows. There are screens on roughly half of the windows in the cabana. We had to choose between opening the windows to have air circulation or keeping the bugs away.
Third is the all inclusive rate, which isn’t actually all inclusive. After two nights on the island, we went to get on the boat to return to Placencia, but we’re told we had to settle our bill first. Since we purchased the $150pp/pn all inclusive package, we were very confused. We had unknowingly racked up an $80usd bill in ‘non local’ drinks in those two days. At no point did the host explain what drinks were extra. Our host informed us that they normally tell the guests what is included and what isn’t when they arrive, but they forgot to tell us. My boyfriend paid, but when we got back home we reached out to the hotel to contest this, and they agreed to refund us the $80. It’s been two months since then, and while I’ve received a ton of emails from Ranguana Caye asking us to visit again soon, they haven’t refunded our money.
Not worth the headache
- Wes (10/5): - I feel that everyone should experience staying on a remote island at least once in your life. This is THE island to do so. Be aware that due to local fishermen and almost non existent conservation practices there are very few “food fish” in and around this picturesque island cay. In this writers opinion, the staff made the trip memorable, as such we have decided upon returning next year as well. The food was divine, we ate the local lobster each and every day along with local staples such as fried jacks, plantain and whole fried fish.
- Tony (10/5): - Shadow the island dog and the rest of the crew made my island getaway special! I enjoyed the beach bbq, ample painkillers (of the liquid variety), along with the peaceful night's sleep in my cabana. Truly a unique little island escape.
- Casey (10/5): - I really felt like I was away from it all; after about half an hour or so from Placencia we arrived on what looked like a green little cream puff of an island. Juan and the rest of the team on Ranguana cooked our meals and showed us around the island, including snorkeling on the reef. If you're looking for an off the beaten path eco-lodge, this is the place!
- Weston (10/5): - This is a beautiful, remote island. Amazing snorkeling right off the beach, tasty food and nothing beats the sound of waves to help you get to sleep. If you're lucky, you may see sea turtles hatch on the island!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ranguana Cay is getting away from it all, many come for the day, but it's real serenity is found in the breezey evenings. The food was amazing, but don't expect a lot of choice and enjoy seafood! The cabanas are rustic, no AC, but not too small. Great snorkeling but the island is far enough out on the reef that there is always a current. And Freddy the bartender/concierge is awesome!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We (party of 4) stayed two nights and had the island to ourselves, what a treat! Play Robinson & Crusoe (with a lot more amenities (kayak, paddle, snorkeling) and a truly great staff. Thank you to Freddie for being such a good host and Bar man by excellence. We had the best cook Rowan (spelling?!). Ivan our conch hunter. Great game of dominos guys!
Only one issue the hot water heaters especially in Man of War are very temperamental and can spew boiling water that can really scorch you. So beware! Also the floor of the shower in Man of War needs redoing.
