Guest Reviews
- ELIZABETH (2/5): - Never made it there
- JoAnn (10/5): - I've stayed at the Hotel Guanacaste for 15 years - the only times i have not is when they haven't had a room available- it's my preferred local. It's not a fancy place, but it suits my needs. It is very close to the bus stations and dining choices
- Jessica (6/5): - This is an okay place to stay for one night when arriving in or leaving from Costa Rica. It is very basic and nothing has been replaced in decades, but it is clean and they do their best to take care of the place. The rooms are between two bars, so the partying is loud and continues into the night. The rooms are inside the grounds of one of the bars, but once the bar is closed for the night, the fence is closed and the gate is locked. My friend and slept soundly there and woke early to take a taxi to the airport, to which the lady at the front kindly arranged the night before. An older gentleman unlocked the fence for us and stood guard until our taxi arrived. There were several restaurants we walked to in about 5-10 minutes. I felt comfortable staying with a friend, but I may have felt a little nervous going out at night by myself. I heard an iguana crawling around inside the roof for a minute just before bedtime, but I think he settled down and went to sleep too.
- Michael (8/5): - Although the room was small and simple, it was clean, comfortable, and with good A/C. No hot water but who needs it in 33 degree heat. A bit noisy from the adjacent bar, but no problem with ear plugs. Good food in the attached restaurant. The staff were fabulous - friendly and super helpful and went out of their way.
- Monica (2/5): Gross - This place was gross. Our room had ripped sheets, stained bed cover, a cigarette butt among other dirt (despite a no smoking sign in the room) on the ground. I am generally fine staying in budget places and don’t need much but it was hard to stay in this room. On the flip side, the people working here were lovely and the bar/lounge area was decent/clean. I spent as much time as I could there before I had to go into the room to sleep.
- Karen (6/5): - It is an economic choice.. the price was right.. it was clean and staff was most helpful and the restaurant made it-so. convenient
- Stanislaw (6/5): - We have just stayed twice at this hotel (2 days in the beginning of our trip and 2 days at the end).
You pretty much get what you paid for. The rooms are very basic, but clean.
PROS: The best thing were the guys at the reception. They were very friendly and helpful answering any question we had. The AC worked perfectly and was very quiet, the TV also worked well. The location was excellent. We had the opportunity to meet the owner, Sonia, and she was professional and pleasant. On our second stay, the matresses were more comfortable.
CONS: The worst asset of this hotel was the morning girl at the reception. She was rude, unpleasant and unprofessional. That by itself, turned any experience to bad. A few points to notel: there was no hot water and it was pretty noisy in the night. You can hear everything that is going on outside.
All in all, it is a reasonable place if you need a cheap place to sleep close to the centre and bus stations
- JoAnn (6/5): - I'm a longtime patron of the Hotel Guanacaste. I'm glad to see it's had a recent renovation. My only complaint is that the restaurant/bar next door played loud music late into the night. But it was a Friday night, and I was especially tired from my bus trip. I will stay there again without hesitation.
- Vicky (10/5): - Great place
- Ricky (4/5): - You get the price of what you pay, if you are looking just for a place to sleep and go then this is ok, no hot water, no shampoo and expect bugs and mosquitoes in your room. Close to amenities. Staff was friendly
- Bruce N (10/5): - I have stayed with Hotel Guanacaste several times over the years when in Liberia..
Have noticed many improvements in that time.
The hotel has always been cheap & affordable, centrally located, clean with reliable Wi-Fi.
These are important to me and I will return as long as this is provided 😁
- Roció (2/5): - The room we booked the AC did not work so they moved us to another room but was smaller than original room. The shower had no shower head it had just a pipe coming out of the wall, window was missing and had a plywood board instead, bed was very uncomfortable pillows were soo flat, the ac hose on the wall was so wide the mosquitos came in the room. The outside noise from 3 different bar/restaurant was terrible so loud until it stopped at 2am.
- Natalia (8/5): - Very accomodating staff, cheap clean place for short stay (in transit)
- Terry (8/5): - I really like the people who work there
- Kenry (8/5): - Cannot complaint too much for the price I paid. Nice place and staff was accommodating.
- Manny (2/5): - Not worth the pay
- Victor (10/5): - Good place to stay for the price if you’re in Liberia
- Terry (6/5): - The hotel good for the price. I stayed for a night before going to the airport, and the hotel provided what I need. I liked the location, and the food/shopping options within walking distance.
- Diego (10/5): - Hotel Guanacaste is pretty accurate in what it advertises, it is a good budget hotel with nice staff and owners. We were even treated specially for being returning customers and that is something to value. There is a bar outside and music can be loud in certain rooms, so pack some earplugs if you are a light sleeper, but other than that we were really happy with the experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The place needs someone with vision to take many advantages there are around.
- Brian (8/5): - Was an inexpensive hotel. Nothing fancy but the staff was great. Good place for picking up or dropping people at Luberia airport
- CHARLES (6/5): Hotel for the locals - This is your local Tico hotel. No friles, no bells and whistles very basic but very old. The price is cheap for a reason but it is in a very good location.
- Dragi (4/5): - The bed very uncomfortable just a sponge as a mattress small room cold water in the shower
- Ingela (6/5): - For a one night stay this property is OK. It's basic but it's very close to the bus station as you arrive from the Nicaraguan border and it's also less than 2 blocks from the airport bus stop.
- Onter (10/5): - It is nice
- jo anne (4/5): - Not even a hook in the bathroom or on the walls for clothing. Had to leave bags at the end of the bed in order to get to the bathroom. Room was extremely small. There was a hole in the bedsheet provided. We would have been better to take a bunkbed room to have some floor space. We moved a medal folding chair outside the door during the afternoon in order to move around in the room. Brought it back in at nighttime to use as a bedside table. The folding chairs in the courtyard were filthy and literally had the stuffing coming out of them. The only thing this place had going for it was the cheap price and the proximity to the bus station. We were out the door by 7:15 am.
- cassio (10/5): - Good for short time
- Georgina (8/5): - Hotel was well situated for both bus stations, basic but what we needed.
- Patricia (2/5): - The room I got was extremely tiny. To move around the room, I put bags on bed. This is not a good choice for an older person
- Bruce N (10/5): - This is was my third visit to Hotel Guanacaste and I have seen many improvements from my last visit 1 ½ years ago 👏
This hotel is very safe, quiet, extra conveniently located a 5 minute walk from my TicaBus pickup and drop off point.
The convience food options are steps my the hotel and include McDonald's, Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, Papa John's so many more.
The discount shopping 🛍️ options are endless with several discount Big box and grocery stores literally on the doorstep.
Well done, keep up the great work 👏👍👍👍
I will be back later in the year.
- Megan (10/5): - Close to amenities and Central Park. Easy check in and access to wifi. Cozy for a stop over and friendly accommodating staff.
- Lawrence (2/5): - The staff were decent, however, this is the dirtiest place i have ever stayed. The walls and floors were extremely dirty. The staff cleaned the toilet as i waited to enter, but it was badly stained. The bed sheets were clean.
- Melissa (10/5): - I needed an affordable place to stay before my flight and this was exactly what I needed. It is fair to say that if you are accustomed to perfectly painted walls and high thread count sheets this is not your place. It was exactly what I needed-- a bed to sleep in, bathroom, and convenience of locality. The staff were beyond helpful and the only people who openly spoke the me in this city. Additionally, if you do not speak Spanish and are not willing to learn, this is not your place. Overall, I had an amazing experience for what I needed.
- Robert (8/5): Basics - A basic hotel without the frills I.e. coffee maker, tv that North Americans usually expect.
- Simon (10/5): Great advice from Reception! - Very friendly staff, helped me map my bus route through Costa Rica.
- Line (2/5): - le drap était lavé mais taché
- John (4/5): - Too expensive for what you receive.
- Everlyn (10/5): - Era conveniente por que el bus tiene una parada en el mismo hotel y no tuve que trasladarme con mis maletas a otro lado.
- Martha (8/5): Very good service - The cleanness was good; the condition of the hotel was ok;it’s very basic ; the service was excellent. The staff is very nice , friendly and very helpful
- ira (8/5): Over night stay, catching a flight from LIR - We only stayed one night and caught a flight from LIR. The room we had was very basic but it was good for what we wanted and what we paid. The staff we very helpful and friendly.
- Nathan (4/5): - Got put in a room with a broken fan. Wonder how long it’s been broke. Got a different room but no Wi-Fi. The staff was excellent though.
- Henry (8/5): - Don't expect much for the price
- Brian (10/5): - As always, friendly and helpful staff, very basic but clean rooms and the best bargain in Liberia, helped by a very convenient location.
- Tomasz (2/5): - I am not a picky traveler but this was a horible hotel. Room felt like a prison cell. Dirty. Broken sink, beds on cardboard boxes. The young recepcionist really rude. Do not recomend.
- Rosemin (8/5): - Great for cheap, very basic rooms
- michael (10/5): - Good location, economic
- OSCAR (6/5): - I can’t complain much about this hotel considering the amazing price. We ended up finding a roach on the shower curtain so that provided a quick scare. Other than that, great hotel for the price and location.
- David (10/5): - The place is clean the staff is wonderful the location is perfect
- yadirad493 (2/5): You've been warned ⚠️ - Terrible place.. dirty place
Bars all around.. very loud music..
Nothing there but a bed, a table and shower.. you do have wifi and AC but it stinks.. bed and sheets smell.
Getting there from Liberia Airport is $20 and it's only 13 minutes from airport.. do yourself a favor take bus.. it's $2 per person and bus stop it's only blocks away.. it takes you to airport.. they gave me change in colones..
- Gigi (4/5): - Next to bars, loud, drunks, stinks,
Theres just a bed a dirty broken chair and a floding table with a tablecloth i was afraid to look underneath..shower head water ran like a faucet, no warm water, a toilet an sink.. no closet..
- JoAnn (8/5): - i always stay here when i'm passing thru Liberia
- Candice (2/5): - Gave the Hotel Guantacaste several weeks notice that due family illness I would have to cancel my reservation,
- Joejoe (8/5): - Good Location. next to bus station. 15 min from airport. stores close by.
- Ivan (8/5): - I liked the service, the user-friendly process for the reservation, check-in and check-ou ptocess. It was clean and safe.
Definitely, the pet-friendly option is a great advantage. Good one!
In my opinion, it is necessary some investment in the facilities, for example, to have the rooms well painted, same for bathrooms, improve the beds and install better fans in the non-A/C rooms.
You would consider to re-activate the restaurant service so it can represent a plus for you.
WI-FI would also be a great service for you.
It will be a good option for economic lodging if you need a place where to move to ther places.
- Evan (8/5): Local style accommodation with a smile - George and the staff are very friendly! My room had very strong aircon, however the rooms with aircon are far away from the router so no dice with the wifi. I was told the rooms toward the front of the hotel with fans have better wifi. The hotel is clean, though perhaps the walls could use a fresh coat of paint …but it was clean! For the value, I won’t complain -it was a deal! It is also very secure, and near a couple of great restaurants as well as the bus terminal.
- jimmie (10/5): - Very friendly staff
- Bruce N (6/5): - Very centrally located. No wifi in my room, connected without service, router just needed to be rebooted 🤔 (I had Wi-Fi on my cellphone in case of this problem 😕)
- michael (10/5): - It is a basic room. Could use a reading lamp and a paint job. Otherwise, ok.
- Bruce N (8/5): - Very central and convenient, surprisingly quiet for it central location near many stores, transit & restaurants.
Will stay again on my next visit to Liberia, Costa Rica.
The price is right gor those that just need a bed to sleep & a central location to tour from.
(WiFi was unavailable in my room 1 of the 3 days of my stay, but a 5g connection was available in the lobby/lounge & I had a data plan on my phone so the inconvenience was minor and repaired come clerk shift change) (Signal without internet that simply required that the modem be refreshed and clerk on duty shrugged his shoulders as didn't have the capability 🙁)
- KARLA (2/5): - nothing, the air blew dirt and I could not sleep because of the noise
- Lindsey (4/5): Bare bones hotel in rough area - This is the only hotel I've ever walked out of and found another place to stay. The staff was very nice, but this is in an extremely rough area. Very bare bones in the rooms - just concrete walls and floors, bars on the windows, barbed wire around the property. We didn't feel safe parking the car there, let alone sleeping there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Inexpensive and close to bus station - Inexpensive place not far from the bus station. Not a bad spot for a place to sleep and shower before heading to the border or the Liberia airport.
It is set against a bar restaurant, which potentially in normal times may be playing music into the night, but during these times of covid they only play music until around 10pm.
24 hour reception so you can check out very early in the morning if you need to go to the airport or take a bus.
- Anthony (10/5): - Our bus got in super late but had people at the front dress ready to check us in. Perfect place if you’re traveling through by bus
- Brock (8/5): - This place has character. I felt safe and totally looked after. Friendly staff and lots. of green space on the property....
Not too loud, even tho there are bars and restaurants across the street.
Sure the facilities could use a bit of paint, but if that is your focus than you aren't traveling for the right reasons.
I would come stay here again.
- Wendy (2/5): - Las instalaciones estan muy feas, el valor de la noche esta caro para la infraestructura del lugar, le falta pintura, espacio, ducha, la cama esta fea, no tiene ducha, las paredes no estan pintadas y estan manchadas
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fine if you can't afford more, otherwise pass - This is very basic accommodation (no AC, hot water, etc) which is what you pay for except I found there were three problems. First, no AC is fine but the fan they do have is very small and ineffective. Second, there's lots of gaps and cracks in the walls that make it very hard to make sure mosquitoes don't get in during the night and keep you awake, which happened to me. Finally, the wifi in the rooms wasn't working. If you're looking for a place to spend a night and are on a really tight budget, this is probably fine. Otherwise you could probably go up to a slightly higher price point and get significantly better value for money.
- Mariana (8/5): - Budget friendly property with the basics. Very clean. Staff was great! very friendly and customer service orientated.
- Carlos (6/5): - I found it expensive for the type of room.
For half cost you can have TV and hot water on other places, for example
- NUNO (10/5): - Very nice and friendly.
- DONALD (6/5): - Managers very kind and helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is very basic place for budget sleepover. Staff is extremely helpful to fix You up with transportation (they called SJO-MGA bus to pull off the highway to pick me up in front of the hotel), how to get covid test done, wash your laundry, printing services etc. Hotel is near center of town, nice restaurants and shopping in walk distance.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Smelled like the flowers blooming on the trees, and close to food. Great staff!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I LOVED the all the hotel employees. Martin was amazeing, and made me feel at home right away! More hotel personel should be like him and help people when they have questions and let them know where they can shop, get coffee, and just be very kind and willing! I think he was the best hotel person that i have had the pleasure to meet. Also loved the Gardinia trees in front of my room. Very nice!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It has a very good location. Next to it, there is a bar/restaurant and the food is good.
The gentleman in the front desk was very helpful.
The room could had accommodate 5 people.
It was a cheap price.
The room was not well cleaned. The mattress was old and too soft. We could not stay the night there. However it think that it will be a fair place to stay for someone with a low budget (like a backpacker).
- Steven (6/5): - You get what you pay for. Great for a layover but that’s about it. No hot water, terrible internet when I was there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This hotel is not for a vacation or a honeymoon. It would be perfect for traveler on budget for a layover between flight and bus if they would fix some problems. I was there waiting for my covid19 test results before bus ride to Nicaragua.
Good things:Location is great, walk distance from both bus terminals even if You have heavy luggage. Walk distance from downtown shopping, dining and hospitals, in case You need Your covid19 test done. A bar and a restaurant right next to the property, if You too tired to walk. Extremely helpful staff. They figured out when and where I can get covid19 test done in a minute, washed my shirt and helped me with transportation options and printing without reaching out hand for a tip. Clean sheets in the bed and functioning bathrooms.
Bad things: Rooms haven't seen fresh paint for a while, brush in front of the hotel heavily overgrown and in a desperate need of hedge trimmer, some rooms have A/C units removed and because of that have holes in the ceiling. Swarms of mosquitoes enter into the room from these holes in the night. You can't sleep not one minute! Next time I'm smarter and will plug that hole with towel. Most part of the year You don't need AC in this location, fan is enough. But in my room the fan was attached to the wall and was inefficient.
- Sophie (8/5): Basic but good - Great service and easy to find. Very basic rooms but fine for a quick stopover
- Melinda (6/5): An OK stay - My time there was incredibly hot, and the building heated up as the day went on. Super uncomfortable nights with the heat (no AC, one little fan). Cold water shower. Bunk bed that was comfortable. Funky, disused, "lobby". Cheap though!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The convenience to the airport was good.
The room was very hot and it was very noisy, could here everything!
- ELIZABETH (6/5): - Not so good. Most tourists to Costa Rica would consider it a dump. No TV., fridge, A/C. A clean bed is the best it offers. Location is good— near the bus station, but the floors which have been repaired with concrete, then not tiled, leaves the room looking very bad. Nah!

- Verified traveler (2/5): - There really is absolutely nothing to like about this hotel. It is a mess and rooms are beyond basic. Wifi & AC are the only bonus to this place. Don’t bother - no value for the price! Cold water shower. Stay somewhere else.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - For the price really bad the place it is a mess not happy i will not back thats for sure i could get better hotel for that price in liberia
- Rudie (6/5): - For one overnight I have all basic things. That was for me important. But over all, is was't comfort. Bus terminals are nearby ; neighbourhood have places to relax, enjoy party and beers.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent customer service. I would definitely recommend it for a quick night.
- ontheroadkev (6/5): Great on a budget but beware of live music venue next door - My wife and I stayed here simply to save costs. The rooms are clean enough and sufficient for our needs. No hot water or shampoo supplied for the shower. Bed felt more like a thick foam pad than a real mattress. We stayed on Saturday night and the club / bar next door has a live band that plays until 11pm. So much for getting to sleep early. Friendly enough service from the staff and Okay for the price of $35
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to the bus station. quiet. easy come and go. close to restaurants and grocery. helpful and friendly staff. great value for the dollar and don't pay for what I don't need
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Small, clean and exactly worth what you pay for. Close to bus stations (3 blocks) and restaurants.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very small, basic rooms. The bathroom was in rough shape.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location for what we needed, clean but run down. I had booked the single room, which is basically a bathroom with a bed in it, yes all in one room. It felt a bit like a jail cell, but had everything you needed. The staff were incredibly helpful and the location is super central, close to the bus station. If you just need a place to crash this will do the job, but a sense of adventure will help you get past the rough edges.
- melissa8470 (6/5): Vacation - Hotel was old and needed updating. Tub was dangerous. Drinks were little alcohol unless specified. Elevator was musty smelling. Entertainment was ok. I’ve had worse. Food was ok. Area was remote. Massages on beach were well worth it.
- james (8/5): Good choice for the price - The room was a cheap alternative to stay in the center of town. The room was set up so that the fan drafted in the cooling evening air, The room was small and serviceable. Everywhere was walkable including the bus stations a couple of minutes away. If I am ever in Liberia again, I would stay here.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok for a layover on your way out of town - In a city with few hotels that rise above "tolerable," this one is...tolerable. Clean-ish. Close to bus station and center of town.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The AC could not Cool the small room. There is no hot water. They only give you one towel.
- joe (4/5): - They need to lower the price by half and it would be perfect for the money.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Dog eared dive. If you have no other option stay here. The bed was okay but the air conditioner didn’t work. Extremely uncomfortable temperature and no way to ventilate. The sink sprayed water out of the sink. Quite an experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We thought they had a restaurant on the property. Not so. Very primitive but for the price was no surprise. Air conditioner was a noisy window style.
The plus was it was only a block to the bus station.
Staff was attentive. Very nice young fellows.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great little hostel. Seems safe and fairly clean. No frills but what you would expect for the money.
- Ramón (4/5): Need performance - Poor service, and expensive.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Ronny was great host and completely made our stay feel safe!!! It was clean and had some great visitors !( egwanas )
All the staff and owners were very pleasant, a great basic hostel, close to all the shops and bus terminals , a very safe place to walk around for three Canadian girls . We had trouble with the Car rental place , so Ronnie helped us hire a car and driver. Which worked out great for us, we all three have nothing but praise for this little gem of a hostel .
- Frank (6/5): - This is a convenient place to stay if you are looking for a cheap place to sleep for the night. It's a 5 minute walk to the main bus terminal to get you to other places in Guanacaste like Puntaarenas and Tamarindo. I used this hotel because I had a late arrival from Canada before heading down to Jaco. Next door to the hotel is a great restaurant for food and drinks. They play music videos throughout their TV screens and TVs. The hotel itself has very friendly staff working there. The rooms are tiny and really only meant for the bare minimum of requirements (bed, sink, shower, toilet). If you are fussy about accommodations then this place is not for you. If you don't care where you sleep as long as there is shelter and a bed, then this place works for you. You're not gonna be bringing back a date to this place, trust me.
