Guest Reviews
- Kestra (10/5): - We really enjoyed staying here, the onsen was so relaxing and beautiful. Some of the staff were very nice and sweet, others were kind of rude. Its also very quiet and safe around the hotel so we liked that. It was hard to find a restaurant within 20 minutes walking that was open for dinner, but we met a sweet auntie who told us where to find good food. We will definitely stay here again when we come to Kinugawa
- Ti (10/5): - The hotel room was very spacious and a traditional tatami room style. The view was incredible!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice view room - Change bed mattress, pls
No bidet in the toilet.
- Wai Kheong Mercury (8/5): - Very nice onsen. It looks updated and well maintain.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Average - Too far from the station. Walk with luggage is a pain. The onsen is not that good in compare to the other onsen hotel in the district.
- Cheryl (10/5): - I found this Onsen and an excellent offer from Expedia. I wasn’t sure what to expect at such a low price and some mixed reviews. I loved it here and it exceeded my expectations. I dropped off my luggage early and walked the area until check in. Since it is across the river and a bit of a walk from the train station, it was so peaceful and beautiful away from others. I found a town footpath that overlooked the river gorge, a suspension bridge, and interesting decaying resorts from the economic boom downfall of the 90’s. A photographers’ paradise.
The resort seems to be going through a renovation. The room was very large and had living spaces with tatami mats. Oh yes, your room key opens a wooden locker near reception for you to place your shoes- wear socks. Beds were not futons but mattresses on floor. The mini fridge was great. I didn’t even use the bath in the room because the onsen was clean and wonderful. An outdoor bath looks out on a wooded area and is divine. The shower area has great hair and soap products. I had difficulty finding it at first because the instructions are a bit vague with arrows, but if you look for the out building next to and behind you’ll find it easily. Had to walk on plywood boards placed for the renovation and a rock path up to step so be aware. Yukata and slippers are provided. There are two massage chairs and multiple vending machines. I highly recommend staying here.
- Aik Leng (8/5): - Spacious but do not like the fact there is no restaurant
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- Sukvinich (8/5): - The room is large, there is a convenience store nearby, there is a public onsen to use, it is clean, reasonable price and convenient for those who travel by car.
- Merle (6/5): - Not much assistance when transport was needed
- Micah (4/5): - The rooms was satisfactory but old as the hotel has an 80’s feel to it. Room was kept but we weren’t sure how long it had been since it was used. Our biggest problem was we killed over 15 Japanese beetles flying through the room all night. Harmless but gross.
- Erin C (6/5): - We stayed in a standard room, tatami-style, with mattresses on the floor. The room was large with nice views. The hotel itself feels quite dated and front desk staff are not there all day, which is quite challenging if you want to drop luggage off early, etc. If you are using this as a base for Nikko, it takes nearly an hour by train.
- Christian (8/5): - We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Ootaki. It is Like 15 Minutes by feet from the Station and a Konbini is 8 minutes away. You can walk to many bridges with beatiful views. The Room was clean an very big. We enjoyed the private Onsen every evening (They got 2). Public Onsen ist also accessible for free, but since we got Tattoos we only used the private ones. Highly Recommend this one!
- Ryoko (10/5): -
- HARUKI (10/5): - good
- Rachel (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Ootaki and would definitely return. The hotel is very traditional and gives you a real insight into traditional Japanese culture. Although the staff had limited English, this was not a problem for us and they were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The hotel has lots of freebies as part of their service including combs, hairbrushes, shower caps, razors etc. The onsen was very relaxing and the hotel was clean.
- WING FOO (8/5): - The room is a bit old and need to be renovated.
The air conditioner come with fan only which is a bit warm.
- janine (4/5): - Unfortunately our stay here was ruined by a very rude young man at check in. No manners very rude and unhelpful so would not recommend anything about this place at all. This young man should not be working here. The tatami in room was covered in human black hair (not mine) Very outdated inefficient air conditioning and no washlets in room. Note the two older employees were friendly and courteous
- Cec (8/5): - Although staff doesn't speak English, they are helpful, google translate is good. The hotel is a bit out of the way, there is a 7 11 closed by. The room is nice and big and very quiet. I booked a private bath and it is perfect. For the price i have no issue.
- Alfonso (6/5): Hotel normal. Algo antiguo. Zona tranquila - Hotel antiguo.
- Songsy (10/5): - A classy and elegant hotel. Love the tradition and its cleanliness. It has an outdoor onsen which overlooks the greenery. so totally enchanting 😍
- Songsy (10/5): - Booked it due to its reasonable room rate for a relatively big tatami room. It is a traditional hotel and room is spacious for couples. It's cleanliness is of high standard recommended 👍
- Ho (8/5): - hotel was old but everything was good. only Public bath need walk out from back door from the hotel,
- PHILIP (8/5): - great value. nice baths. big room. a little old, but they’ve renovated the decor, and the price is really reasonable. overall, great if you’re on a bit if a budget.
- Raju (10/5): - I like
- lei (10/5): - The service was great!!
- Marek (10/5): - Out stay was relaxing and peaceful. The staff was kind. Thank you :)
- Michaela (10/5): - The service we received was wonderful. Very attentive staff. The hotel wasn't too far of a walk from the station. The beds, however, were not the best. I expected traditional futons in a traditional Japanese room but instead they had a hard single mattress on the floor. The futon would have been more comfortable. It was nice to have a private onsen but the water was just luke warm in it, but overall I still enjoyed my stay.
- Sara (8/5): - Loved the big room. It was a perfect size for my two kids. We didn’t feel crammed together. Also, we had a nice view of the surrounding area. The staff was helpful and friendly.
- Seiichi (10/5): Awesome hotel - Very nice hotel with huge rooms.
Very fast wifi.
The onsen was a big indoor and nice outdoor one too.
Dont mention about your tatoo and youre ok.
Hotel shuttle bus with schedule cheap
Ride to train station
- david (8/5): - Has privare onsen. Looks old but maintained.
- Justin (10/5): - The older gentleman that checked us in was very welcoming and helpful. The hotel is family friendly. The room was spacious and clean and well kept. We had spring beds which were a little too firm for us and we would rather have gad traditional futons, which is what we will ask for on our next visit.
- Wang (10/5): Cheap, huge room, free onsen - The room was huge, wifi was fast and usable in room. Had no restaurant but the hotel had a little free onsen. Price was cheap.
But the town is not so alive, nearest convienence store was like 10 mins away. And is far from station.
- Dmitry (10/5): - The hotel is located in a very good spot.
There are sightseeing places within a walking distance, as well as convenient stores.
The hotel itself was clean and the staff was friendly. The room was very big and pleasant to stay at, with a very beautiful view of the town and the mountains. There was a bath, shower and a toilet near the room entrance, separated from the sleeping area. The mattresses were very comfortable to sleep on. They also have an option to use a private outdoor hot spring, which is very nice if you stay with your significant other. Although the private outdoor hot spring was for additional price, it was still a nice option to have. If you don't want to use this option, they also have a free of extra charge common hot springs.
I definitely recommend staying at this hotel.
- Stephen (8/5): Nice hotel - Friendly staff, nice onsen.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place is a little walk from the station but don't let that deter you. This hotel is a steal for the price. Their standard rooms are huge! I had so much room to myself. Very different from other hotels at the same price. They have a variety of options when it comes to onsen/baths. You can go to their onsite baths or take a shuttle (anytime within the shuttle hours) to their sister hotel where you can see the river from the hot baths. You tell the front desk at their sister hotel when you want to come back, they give them a call and you're quickly on your way back. The staff was very friendly and answered any questions I had. Although, some japanese will definitely be necessary.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It had a nice Japanese atmosphere, with simple baths and amenities. The surroundings were very beautiful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great little hidden gem - Perfect stay. We will definitely be back again, The only downside was that the restaurant wasn't open, but there is a Lawson just down the road and snack and drinks at reception. They had a local restaurant delivery service on offer -which we did try - but we didn't really enjoy it.
- Hollie (10/5): Perfect Stay - Would Reccommend - Amazing stay and can't wait to return. Absolutely loved the room, the beds were incredibly comfy and the view was amazing. We rented a private onsen and it was perfect. (We also got engaged at the hotel during our stay so it was extra special) Hope to be back soon!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice hotel and services including an excellent onsen. However, this location is not convenient to Nikko, Unbeknown to us it is not actually located in Nikko but in a 20 minute train ride with changes in Kingawa-onsen, a completely different city. Posting this hotel as being in Nikko and only a few minutes from the train station is false advertising. It should be more fully explained where it is and how to get there from Nikko.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice view, clean Japanese style room, toiletries and kimono style pajamas were good. Didn't like that attendant attempted to charge me extra for my 17 year old when Expedia was clear on pricing for three people.
- Calia-Lynn (8/5): - The onsen was nice. Bit out of the way to get to though
- MJ (10/5): - Surprisingly good hotel with charms. It’s a bit dated but very well maintained.
Pro: private osen available
Clean and spacious room
Easy access to train and buses
Con: no WiFi in room, only in lobby
- YT (8/5): - hotel with ok service, but can’t check in after 11PM
- Nick (6/5): Nice onsen - Onsen was great, hotel was OK. A little old and run down, but clean enough. The day time/evening staff were friendly, but the morning staff were not particularly polite or helpful. Strange breakfast arrangement - we had to go in a mini bus to another hotel.
- Maritess (6/5): - the room is okey、and would be better for the staff to more smiles...and more brightness of the hotel...the surrounding of the hotel it was dark…
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great service! Hotel is around 15min. walking from Kinugawaonsen station.
- Shmuel (8/5): A nice hotel, if you have a car - Very comfortable and spacious Japanese style room. A nice spa included. Unfortunately, no Wi-Fi in the rooms, only the in the lobby. Not much near the hotel so a car is necessary. Free parking.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel. Good price. Recommended - Nice hotel. Good price. Recommended
- Verified traveler (10/5): Spacious clean value for money ryokan - Very spacious ryokan and indeed value for money and well maintained. Receptionists are very friendly. Need to converse in simple Japanese. Hotel provides free transport to their sister hotel nearby for onsen at a minimal cost. Will be perfect if they have their own onsen. Overall a very satisfied stay with them and we extended another night instead. Thumbs up!!! 😊
- ratanakorn (8/5): Nice - Goo service and good place
- Sarid (10/5): Excellent - For it was 5 star
- Ivo (8/5): Worth money - We enjoyed our stay. Rooms is very big. Maybe some partes of the building needs sone improvements. If you are planing to go at Niko attractions the hotel is about 40minutes away by train. But overall we enjoy the experience.
- Carol E. (10/5): Wonderful spacious hotel but poor location - Wonderful spacious room with forest view. Unfortunately, it's located a long way from Nikko World Heritage Sites & train station. There is a hotel shuttle to the local train station only in the morning. We had to use a taxi returning or walk uphill for ages. Poor location.
- joshua (10/5): perfect location. a nice hotel - a very good location. service and nice room
- Tan (10/5): - Japanese futon was very comfy ^^ Staffs were very nice even they barely speak english.
Wifi is available at the lobby area. There is a small library for Japanese comic books.
No Onsen at the hotel but there is a service to their sister hotel.
- Mantosh (10/5): - It is a very nice hotel with lush green surroundings. We enjoyed a lot
- ENG XIAN (10/5): Amazing stay! - It's amazing, the hotel is having the private bathes (need charged). The room is big, nice view, and amazing. Love it!
- Penny (8/5): Traditional hotel - Beautiful hotel but very difficult to get to unless you were a local; taxi from Nikko cost $75
- Alastair (6/5): Stay here, use the Plaza, save money! - The Ootaki is an interesting hotel to stay at because it allows you to access the facilities at the nearby Plaza Hotel, which is a short ride by shuttle.
The Ootaki has 3 private onsens, which are ¥2100 for 2 and ¥3600 for 4 people for an hour. You have to book them.
The big onsen area in the Plaza is ¥500 for two indoor baths, an outside onsen overlooking the river and mountain as well as a sauna (from 3-9pm only) AND you can use the same ticket again in the morning - bargain at ¥500!
There is a reading room full of various manga series, but not one book of any kind in any other language. Next to it is a cafe area with seating next to two machines - one selling milk products, the other coffee, etc.
The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable, but the heating is old, like most of the hotel, so it was a bit cold. Perhaps other seasons would be fine.
The eating situation was unusual. They had a breakfast buffet for ¥1600 and a dinner buffet form ¥3500 on a take-it-or-leave-it basis. No other choice. One man at reception kindly took us through their restaurant map and we ended up at an Italian restaurant called Kanon for my birthday dinner. Almost nothing about the restaurant was Italian, not even the music. However, the food was good all round and so was the wine!
The area around the Plaza Hotel was more interesting, and the restaurant looked more interesting.
However, the Ootaki was half the price, so it was a good choice and I would recommend it.
- Victor (6/5): - Overall, i like this place; it gives you the impression that the host would give his best to make your stay comfortable.
This is about the only one hotel i could remember asking guest to take shoe off as soon as you are entering to the hotel lobby; since there were no shoes allowed taken inside, the place was super clean and dust free. I like the idea so no complaint about this!
Also, there was a large LCD given in our room.
Although the restaurant was not on the night of our check-in, there were few vending machines available from ice-cream to cup noddle, cold / hot beverage. In addition, there were two other convenient stores only about 7-min walk from the hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 15-minute walk from Kinukawa Onsen Station, the hotel stands in front of the hills. The staffs can speak English a little but they're very friendly. We got a huge room, the Japanese style. It's comfortable, that's so impressive with the reasonable price.
cons
- no breakfast, no restaurant, far from the convenience stores and restaurants
- the language barrier.
- OzFam (6/5): Sleepy town - The hotel was very clean and the room was very big. However, it did feel very dated. What we were not prepared for was the entire town seem to shut down at 5 p.m. which means no restaurants open at all that we could find.
