Easy walk from the train station and close to the York Minster and the Shambles market. Dozens of restaurants, pubs and shops around the hotel. Cannot wait to go back!
• Emily (10/5): Charming comfortable hotel - Adorable, charming and comfortable hotel. Our room was cozy, bed, pillows and comforter were extremely comfy. We slept great. Loved the skylight in the bathroom. Staff was extremely attentive and helpful. Wonderful location with tons to walk to.

What really made the experience exceptional, though, was the outstanding customer service. • Ann (10/5): - The staff are tuned into accommodating their guests at the hotel and in their restaurant. I had a wonderful stay. The room was newly upgraded, had nice accessories and so very clean. Various coffees, teas and a couple sweet snacks topped it off. The one thing to be aware of is that three are lots of steps to get in and around this hotel. It is a gem otherwise.

However, constant and very loud banging in the area just outside my window kept me awake until past midnight. It started up again by 8 am. This was very disappointing. I would have given a 5 star rating had it been for this.
• Vincent (10/5): - Very historic property which is close to train station and all sites of interest. Overall great service. It should be noted that there is no AC nor elevator do to historic nature of property. Usually not a big deal as it is seldom "warm" in York and there are staff who will assist if one needs help with luggage. Bathroom was wonderful.
• Colin (10/5): - Don't drive, arrive by train and everything can be walked from here. Vibrant city centre location so can be noisy at night. Room standards vary from the amazing to the basic so worth paying more. 4* as we got a basic room night 1 but then they moved us to amazing room! Food and staff were really 5*.

• Shirley (4/5): - Not really what we expected from the photos and description. We booked a terrace room which turned out to be a room accessed downstairs through the very busy hotel pub and facing directly into the pub windows and its courtyard, with the beer terrace above the room. We were told that pub customers are asked not to use the courtyard after 9pm. We asked for a different room and staff were very good at finding us a small double room in the main building, which was OK although storage was a bit limited. If you want to leave luggage, be aware they don't store it in a secure cupboard - it's left out on view in the lobby next to the reception desk (not staffed all the time). We were told it was because it's an old building and there's no space.

• Andrew (6/5): Not 5* and expensive for being in a sound box. - The "Terrace" rooms are noisy during the day with bar customer's using the area immediately outside of the rooms to smoke and talk loudly in groups. This was encouraged by a separating door to the bar being deliberately kept open (using a heavy plant pot) by some staff, even though reception staff kept closing it. Overall, it was impossible to rest in afternoon with the bed just less than some 10 feet away from the noise / smoke coming from outside. With the door open, the noise from the bar was also clearly heard well into late afternoon. Whilst reception was apologetic, and on several occasions closed the door, other staff from the bar kept opening it using the plant pot and, in addition, did not attempt to enforce any of the non smoking signs on the tables. On the raising this matter in the morning on checking out, I was given some weak excuse about some other door? not working / broken for some time and that this was their normal practice!
• Thomas (10/5): - This is a true luxury inn. The building is historic, but updated with modern convenience and beautiful finishes. Very nice restsurant and bar, but walkable to dozens of other venues.

• Wayne (10/5): Great hotel, noisy area at times. - Excellent hotel, great rooms and food. Shame the kicking out time for the pub opposite was soo noisy though. Woke up at 1, 2 and 3am to shouting and fighting.
• Gretchen (8/5): - The positives first. A great central location. Easy walk from the train station. Staff was great. The beds/bedding were very comfortable. Super soft robes and a lighted vanity were great perks. The only negative was the room location. We were in 18 which faced the street (jackhammering going on until 9:30pm). This is obviously not the hotels fault. However, this room is next to the staff room, an office and an exterior door. Every time one of those doors was open/closed/slammed it rattled our door/room. On the Tuesday after Easter, the staff was in and out of those doors no less than 30 times between 6am-7:30am. Unfortunately, no sleeping in that morning. The doors opened significantly less the following morning so it was better but still disruptive. Also, the kitchen is on the other side of the room, so you also had the noise of the carts bringing supplies to it. I understand it’s an old building and noises will be heard, but truly the staff should be more mindful to be quiet when going in and out of the staff/office rooms and the exterior door.

• Alex (10/5): Fantastic hotel our favourite in York. - Fantastic hotel Def our favourite in York, location is amazing and the breakfast is do die for Sets you up for the day. This is our second time in two years at this hotel and we will only stay here. It's not cheap £450 for two nights but at Christmas time....who cares.
• Aaron (10/5): Lovely place to stay in a central location - Had a wonderful two night stay here. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Tassimo coffee machine as well as a kettle and tea options. Dressing gowns and slippers as well as towels. Room was tidied and restocked before our second night, extra milk delivered for the morning to our doorstep. Absolutely wonderful place. We ate here for one evening meal, food was delicious and served in good time. Had a great time.

• Harold (10/5): Definitely worth staying. - Excellent staff, kind, clean and polite; most certainly made you feel welcome. A place i fully intend to go back to. The room was clean, a couple of niggles such as the vanity light not working properly though the staff were straight onto it and fixed within a jiffy. It had been working when previously checked. The breakfasts were excellent value and table service was prompt, very prompt considering some places where i could be waiting 20 minutes. A wonderful spread of continental, fruits, pastries, cereals and juices along with full or part English options. Cups and sauces would be preferable to mugs though. The evening meals were limited in choice, though what they did present was again, excellent and the service i cannot fault.

• dietmar (10/5): Our York place to stay - This is one of our regular places to stay when in York, yes there are lots of other options, here we like the rooms, the building and its history and one of the best breakfasts in York.
• Alice (6/5): A bit of a shambles - I booked a courtyard room, as we both have trouble with stairs. Stupidly i thought it would be on the ground floor. Staff were very helpful and moved us to a terrace room, which was smaller, we didn't mind it was warm, but found there were two steps up the toilet and shower, this was a bit of a problem at night, one night i missed the step luckily i fell on the bed. The step was covered in parcel tape. On last day returned back and the room hadn't been serviced.

• Elaine (6/5): Lovely decor and rooms, but rude and unhelpful sta - The decor on entry was beautiful, but there was no reception staff on arrival. Eventually they turned. There was lots of unguarded luggage, which is concerning. The room was lovely but the outside noise from staff moving barrels and glasses at unsociable hours was disappointing. On departure the front desk refused to store our luggage, they said they had no space. Never experienced this before and it is a real prblem with regard to luggage storage and security.

• Andrew (10/5): - Great hotel with little touches that added to the hotel quality. They provide fresh milk to the room fridge daily to enjoy large range of tea and coffee provided free of charge in the hotel room. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and delicious.
• Tom (8/5): - Lovely hotel, but not for elderly guests as the old building has lots of steps. My 83 year old mother had difficulty walking up the dozen or so steps to get from the street to the hotel then internally as well. The building is too old for an elevator. For younger more spry guests, I cannot recommend this hotel enough. The accommodating staff was kind to move my mother to a different room with a walk in shower as the jacquzzi bath in her first room had too high a step up (compared to a regular tub) for her. If you are not mobility challenged, this is a great hotel in a great location.
• Merle (10/5): - After staying at Deans Court hotel the previous night, it was a breath of fresh air to be staying in a Grade I building (built in 1711) with definite ambiance and antique charm. I definitely WILL be staying there the next time I'm in York.
• Gabriel (6/5): - The hotel is beautiful, we had a room however in a anex little house next to it which was surprising next to the kitchens so the smell of food was quite persistent. What I didn’t like is that on our last day the Hotel did not give us any towels and since we left early to get a train we had to dry ourselves with our own clothes since the hotel tool away the towels we used before and didn’t give us any back.
• Anthony (10/5): - Our family attended a wedding in York and we stayed at Judges Lodging. From desk receptionists Vicki and Aga who hosted breakfast were both great! Character room was large with all the amenities, breakfast was great with a very pleasant staff. I highly recommend staying and eating at this hotel if you visit York.

I arrived early and they held my bags and moved them into my room when it was ready. They offer a full cooked breakfast with the room. I’d absolutely stay here again!
• Richard (8/5): - Fantastic hotel in the center of York, so very convenient for the sight seeing. Parking was quite a trek away and the Park closes its gates at 6pm, so the short cut is not available. No elevator if you need one
• Jie (8/5): - It’s an antique place. No lift, front desk is on second floor, AC is not working, couch is old and dirty, bed base is not solid . Breakfast is good with service staffs, one of them is not friendly, unfortunately. I don’t know why this place rated as five stars hotel
• Lesley (8/5): - I was expecting to be in the old hotel instead it was a modern annex next to bar. Everything was good except the room. Waited a long time to be able to stay in York in the Judges Lodging. Disappointed.
• Verified traveler (8/5): - Really enjoyed our stay. We had a courtyard room which was very clean (aside from the usual shower seals)! We had a courtyard room which was lovely - our only slight negative being that with our room so close to the bar, we could clearly hear the bar staff emptying all the bottle bins late in the evening (past 11pm).
• Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing experience - Positive Points: 1. The location is perfect - right in the city center and easy to reach. 2. The main building is absolutely stunning, a real architectural gem. 3. The tea quality in the room was exceptional, and the thoughtful touch of delivering milk each morning (and right after our check-in) was really pleasant. 4. Most of the staff were nice and genuinely helpful. What ruined the stay: Room: The room was small but nice, with everything we needed. I liked the privacy of being behind the main building, like a small private house. However, the room was a bit dusty, and I even found a pair of socks under the sofa from a previous guest. Not a huge deal, but not great either. The real issue was the restaurant kitchen ventilation. It sends all the cooking smells into the backyard where our room was. From morning until evening, the air was full of food smells, which made staying in the room during the day unpleasant. The air conditioner was either old or broken, it made a loud cracking noise at night, waking us up. We had to turn it off at 3 a.m. to get some sleep. The bathroom/shower was also disappointing: rusty, with broken lights and bad drainage.

• Chelsea (10/5): - This is my second time staying at this hotel. I liked the room I stayed in better the first time, but I was still happy with the old world charm of this property. The breakfast is great and the staff are super friendly. My only complaint was my room was close to where bottles were being dumped into the bin, not a huge deal expect there were some nights that they would be dumping bottles multiple times well passed midnight which would wake me up with the loud crashing.

Quaint little room was a lot of fun and all amenities were thoughtful (umbrellas provided in the room for example) and comfy. Breakfast was reasonably priced and had lots of good choices. Surprisingly quiet at night - they had a patio nearby but we didn't hear a thing from it and enjoyed restful sleep. A great place and we were glad we stayed there.

The bar, the breakfast and the staff are well…. Great We shall return when next at the theatre in York.

Lovely when bells rang. Breakfast was excellent. Only slight difficulty was that there is no lift in a listed building meaning carrying suitcases up and down stairs. (Staff would have helped I’m sure)

Room was expensive for such a small room and no bath. Too many non residents in bar at night and afternoons I think part of the bar etc should be kept for residents. Would stay here again though but not in the same room.
• Adrian (10/5): Great place to stay in central York - Room was lovely, service great, good food. Perfect location.
• George (10/5): - Lovely old period building, very close to the core of York. Very easy to walk to from the train station.
• David (4/5): - This is NOT a hotel for anyone who has a car. It is impossible to access the Hotel at any time as it is in a pedestrian controlled area. It is NOT a hotel for anyone one who has mobility problems. 39 steps to a congested bedroom( designated “character” ) at additional.cost is unacceptable. The room was gloomy &/cluttered with huge furniture and proved to be without any central heating for the first night of our stay. It was the coldest night of 2024.🍾 The staff were sympathetic and eventually found a single electric heater at 9.30 p.m. by which time we had already retired! Sadly an experience NOT to be repeated. An apology & a substantial refund is the very least I would expect.
• sally (8/5): - Very central, attractive hotel. My room was perfectly nice. Only criticism is that the telephone was often unmanned when trying to make contact.
• Jackie (10/5): - The location was great and the building, food and comfort fabulous. I thought it would be noisy being opposite the bar but after about 9pm it was fine…might be different in the summer when folk are outside!
• John (10/5): - Great place to stay when visiting York. Everything within walking distance. Lovely meal in the cellar bar beneath the hotel. Little bit of noise as we were at the front of the building, but to be expected from a period single glazed window. The hottest hotel bathroom I have ever been in, towel rail on full blast.
• Karen (8/5): - Amazing location food excellent especially evening dinning some staff need to smile some what reception brilliant rooms are gorgeous and the outside area perfect for cocktails
• Kenneth (10/5): - Great position in the centre of York, but very quiet. The courtyard rooms were fairly small but lovely and well appointed. Excellent breakfast. Would not hesitate to recommend this accomodation.
