Guest Reviews
- David (8/5): Great location, lovely staff, great breakfast - Room very nice, lovely shower room, nice touch with muddy boot tray! Fresh milk in the room provided rather than capsules, great addition. Breakfast had good choice and well cooked. Evening meal was ok but cost didnt match quality, ok but nothing special.
- Jehoszafat (6/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): - The staff were exceptionally helpful and attentive. The most dog friendly accommodation we stayed at on our Cumbria Way holiday. The rooms were comfortable and the food at breakfast was perfect to get us going on our 4th day of walking. Thank you. Nothing to say.
- becky (10/5): Excellent hotel - We booked this hotel,as we were at a wedding and 5 min drive to the venue.
The hotel was immaculate, the staff so friendly and helpful.
We got upgraded to a family room,WOW huge so spacious.
The beds were so comfortable,10/10
The breakfast was absolutely out of this world delicious, highly recommend this hotel.
Will definitely be back to stay again.
Thanks so much for your impeccable hospitality No car park on hotel.

- marion (10/5): Very pleasant stay - Very clean and well presented in all areas. Also central location. Breakfast was top quality and lots of choice. Everything freshly cooked to order Bedroom was very well maintained and beautifully decorated. We booked a cost double (all that was available) but it was exceptionally small, much more ‘cosy’ than I expected, having to step around each other to get around the room
- CuriousCrab98 (8/5): Gorgeous food and fabulous service! - We had such a wonderful time at The Royal Oak for dinner, Maria our waitress was an absolute star and ensured everything was perfect from start to finish - you could not ask for better service! Give that woman a raise! The food was wonderful, my only complaint would be that my steak was maybe a little bit on the blue side of rare but that’s if I was being extremely picky. We really loved our meal and how bubbly and friendly the rest of the staff were. Maria was so attentive, that when another staff member brought over my bottled drink without a fresh glass or ice, she swooped in moments later and asked if I would like some without me having to flag her down! Maria is clearly a very hard working and thoughtful waitress and I really hope she knows how much she brings a bubbly and warm atmosphere to the pub.
- Robert (10/5): -
- Jessica (9/5): - Lovely rooms and an excellent breakfast
- David (10/5): -
- darreno895 (10/5): Perfect - Popped in for a bit of lunch, staff were very welcoming and friendly, food was absolutely delicious, great prices and great atmosphere
- Alan (10/5): Great stay on our Cumbria Way trip. - Love this pub, great location for the town.
- Charles (10/5): - Location
- Susan (9/5): Absolutely wonderful, loved it! - Great location, very helpful staff (that’s you Sam!), upgraded soaps, lotions, chocolates and cocoa in the room, great made to order breakfast! We booked a cozy room which was a little tight for my 6’4” husband and I. All other rooms are bigger and I would book one of those!
- Jemma (9/5): Perfect location, wonderful staff : ) - Located in the centre of the town, perfect for walking around and exploring. There’s a choice of local car parks or if you’re lucky there’s also some free street parking Not that I didn’t like it but if I was to stay again I would probably request a room that wasn’t near the entrance door as it was a little noisy with people coming in and out.
- Jennifer (7/5): -
- Karen (8/5): Beautiful - Staff were amazing Only 1 thing that spoiled our trip - not sure if there is a laundry room next to room 19 but for hours on Saturday night it was like a helicopter landing - at one point i was ready to go home but about 11pm it stopped - if it was a washer spinning then maybe consider only setting them off in the daytime as it's very inconsiderate considering the price of the rooms - if it wasn't then lord only knows what it was but it was bad . If not for this then couldn't have faulted our stay
- Linda (10/5): Excellent service and facilities will be back - Central location dog friendly and food is good
- Shubham241290 (10/5): -
- Weir (8/5): Apart from meal reservation had a good stay. - Accommodation was very comfortable,a lot of thought put into extras in bedroom eg bottled water sweet treats, tolietries and fridge. Food was excellent well presented Staff were really friendly. Regulating heating in bedroom complicated.Booked a table for evening meal was disappointed with table given, small table enough room for drinks but no more.Customers walking in not staying at hotel were given priority seating. No reservation had been taken note of even though it was made the day before.
- Liz (9/5): -
- Lars (8/5): For this kind of lodging, a little bit more expensive, but also a better/fresh living - Beds, clean room/bathroom, staff and breakfast (except the croissant's) Nothing to note (except the croissant's)
- Fearless54789334382 (10/5): Absolute foodie gem! - Needed a good pub lunch after a big walk and The Royal Oak didn’t disappoint! Decided to go in after seeing the doggy menu outside and how lovely the staff seemed as they were stood outside chatting to passersby. Pretty empty when we first went in but soon filled up. Staff were SO friendly, food was delicious and huge portions and our dog was extremely happy with his chicken mash and gravy for £3! Will definitely return when we are next is Keswick and no hesitation to recommend.
- 159lesleyt (10/5): Lovely food & great staff - Lovely food, great atmosphere and friendly staff.
- Stewart (8/5): -
- John N Mandy (10/5): Great stay would definitely recommend. - Everything about this hotel is fab..great staff, lovely room and excellent location.
- Tony (10/5): -
- Shirley (10/5): -
- E2362QNpauld (10/5): A brilliant place to stay with friendly staff - The Royal Oak is a good location with great food, clean rooms and a great atmosphere and the service was excellent
- Fay (10/5): -
- Leanne (10/5): - Manager went above and beyond to give us advice and help up throughout our stay
- Natalie (10/5): -
- LauW463 (2/5): Those with allergies and intolerances, beware! - The manager said they would get back to us after we provided further information to them, but never did, so I am writing a review to warn others.
If a menu doesn't have any allergen information then staff need to know what the different items contain! I am vegan and intolerant to dairy. I viewed the menu online the night before we booked for lunch for the following day and it looked to have some options that would be vegan. When we arrived, the menu was completely different. Options I was offered as a vegan with a dairy intolerance: halloumi fries, a curry with a tomato butter sauce, caesar salad, and a tagliatelle which contained parmesan. I saw someone else with a soup that looked vegan, so ordered that but asked the waiter to check that it definitely was. I never did get the confirmation that is was.
If I had an allergy, I'd be too scared to eat here, our waited gave me zero confidence in his knowledge of the menu, or allergies and intolerances.
- Julien_gnts (9/5): Personnel très sympa, emplacement idéal, équipements de qualité, le combo parfait pour un séjour de - Personnel très sympa, emplacement idéal, équipements de qualité, le combo parfait pour un séjour de rêve ! /
- Nightingale (9/5): Excellent location and gorgeous bedroom - Friendly, cosy, modern and clean No parking
- W8641NThelenb (10/5): Great stay! - Stayed for my mil 90th birthday! Staff were very attentive and couldn’t do more for us to make it a special time.
Everywhere very clean. Bedrooms very comfy. The cosy rooms are quite small. Can be quite noisy first thing in the morning with deliveries etc but you are in the centre.
Food and service very good. Our dog was made very welcome.
Breakfast was great with a good choice.
Had a great time and would return.
Rob and his team made it a great stay, thank you.
- Hargreaves (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyed it - Fabulous breakfast
Staff very friendly. And very efficient
- Charlotte (10/5): Fab Stay! - Can't bear the location, room was lovely and great size. All the staff from check in to check out were friendly and nice. Definitely stay here again!
- AWinship (10/5): Great Place - Lovely place, great location, lovely rooms, excellent breakfast
- Stephenson (9/5): -
- Guy (9/5): Very happy to stay again, but not on the top floor. - Great position, friendly staff, comfortable bed, superb breakfast and a brilliant shower. Booked late and ended up on the top floor, so having a killer amount of stairs to navigate after lots of walking during the day was disappointing and no biscuits to go with the tea and coffee!
- joanfU835WQ (10/5): Best steak for years - Walked into Royal Oak tonight with our small dog for a meal. Greeted straight away by a lovely guy who showed us to a table in the window with a little corner for the dog. Place was really busy. We both had medium sirloin steaks which were cooked just like steaks in the 70s from Berni Inns and Angus Steakhouses. Best steaks we've had for years.
The staff here are attentive without being overbearing and friendly too.
We've come to this place since 1973 when it was The Keswick Lodge and have to say it has been asthetically refurbed with some of the original photos still on the walls. Nice pint of Thwaites original too.
- Diane (7/5): After a disappointing start had an enjoyable stay ! - Location and Breakfast ! Paid for an upgrade and given a very basic room . Was told the room was one of the best ! After requesting a refund was eventually given a very nice room ! Disappointing start …..
- G4328YCstevenb (10/5): Best time at the Royal Oak - Visited with my dog for one night and had such a good time. All staff were mega friendly with my dog, perfect location, room was so nice with chocolate treats and a treat bag for the dog. Food was amazing !! Breakfast was amazing, sausage for the dog too. Will absolutely return, we had the best time. Thank you. X
- Brittany (9/5): -
- Christina (10/5): -
- 38kirstyt (10/5): Great dog friendly hotel - This is the second time we have stayed at The Royal Oak and it did not disappoint again. We took our 3 year old Lab and he was truly looked after. The staff couldn’t get enough of fussing him and providing him with plenty of treats.
Our room was comfy, clean and well stocked.
We had breakfast included with our stay and we cannot fault the quality or quantity of the food.
The location is very central and a stone throw from lots of shops and pubs.
Definitely a place to stay if you are coming to Keswick!
- 627bb6aff6fb724a8c7a346665a133fb (9/5): Hotel Facilities and cleanliness,Staff ,Location and food served were all excellent. - Lovely clean Hotel in a Brilliant Location with extremely good Staff and a fantastic Breakfast Choice and Main meals menu . No complaints.
- dc994acfaab873a18263f058a52349c4 (9/5): Very good service & staff. - It was right in the centre. Dog friendly and the staff were lovely and made our puppy feel very involved.
The breakfast was lovely. Would recommend.
- 1a04dc467d6e725350d79e7f47ae12ee (9/5): - Small but well appointed room G3elpful staff

- 01e84f7fc0cb735351864be19e05cb80 (9/5): Perfect stay, very welcoming and superb food - Such friendly staff. We were made to feel very welcome. Room was lovely with nice welcoming touches and breakfast was superb. We even booked in for evening meal which was very good. Nothing. We will book here again when visiting Keswick.
- af143432e90e71ce814a8fa8ecb51b37 (10/5): - TOP: general atmosphere, staff, location, rooms, food
- tightlinesrunning (10/5): Our Best Meal by far in Keswick - My wife and I had a fantastic meal. Food quality, price and service were all excellent.Rob and his team made us feel really welcome and made that extra effort to make sure we had a great experience. A special mention for the Thwaites Original Bitter.
- 109db1c62370711968f4519f436efce5 (10/5): -
- Alwyn (8/5): Great location - Perfect location, very clean and well maintained room On our 3rd and last day we had to wait 45 mins for our cooked breakfast to arrive. When it did finally arrive the poached eggs on my wife's breakfast was stone cold. We complained to a member of staff who came and took the plate away, we them waited a further 15 to 20 mins for a replacement but it never arrived, in the meantime I had finished my breakfast a long time ago. We then gave up waiting and walked out of the dinning room feeling very disappointed. We also noticed other people waiting a long time for their breakfast and someone else complained about their food being cold. Not the standard we were expecting as the previous 2 days were excellent
- Ritchie (10/5): Great place to stay - Great location clean rooms and friendly staff
- kieranwQ3315QK (10/5): Impromptu birthday meal turned out great! - We ate there evening of 08/04/2026.
Really lovely attentive staff - to the point where they knew a it was a member of our party’s birthday and they made up a small fudge cake with a candle!
Really tasty, well crafted food and dog friendly, atmosphere was nice you felt like you wanted to smile any everyone and have a chat with other tables.
When you go the lakes it is going to be on the pricier side, but it’s fine it’s worth paying.
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- Hannah (7/5): Gorgeous room and perfect location. - Lovely room decor and comfy bed. Great shower. Nice tea tray and complimentary chocolates. Air con in the room was good as it was needed. The breakfast was awful which was such a shame as our stay had been great until this point and you would expect better at nearly £200 a night. Croissants were so stale I only had one bite. We waited over 45 minutes for our cooked breakfasts and when they arrived they were completely cold and parts undercooked/inedible. A few other guests were sending breakfasts back so the kitchen were clearly struggling. £20 for a dog with no offer of even a water bowl is a bit steep.
- Guest (7/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): Great location with bar and restaurant facilities downstairs. - Good room size with en-suite. Fantastic town centre location. Have stayed here several times.
- Anthony (9/5): - Clean, comfortable, great location and great staff made us very welcome Nothing
- Alan (8/5): Cosy, friendly & great location - Great location to explore from, nicely redecorated, friendly staff, good breakfast, cosy bedroom. Minor quibbles only - main thing is food was a little hit and miss, some was great!
- 929stephenj (8/5): Nice, modern rooms with a good location. - The rooms were lovely, recently refurbished with AC, television with smartphone casting and a good selection of hot drinks plus a kettle. The pod coffee machine didn’t work, and we reported this on the first, second and final mornings. Unfortunately, it still didn’t work. Food wise, the breakfast service was good, but the hash browns had been fried so deeply that they shattered and were saturated with oil. We had dinner there on the first evening. The food itself was good but the service was extraordinarily slow. When we asked about this, we were told that 50 minutes is a normal waiting time for main courses. This is a lot slower than I would usually expect. Overall, a good experience, but hopefully the points for development can be worked on. 🙂
- BadBazza (10/5): - Everything. Extremely dog friendly. Great beers. Amazing pie. Amazing location Nothing
- krishorton (10/5): Couldn’t fault it - Room was perfect had everything you could want. Catered well for the dog even brought him a cut up sausage for breakfast. Breakfast was great and every staff member we spoke to were kind and courteous. Check in was easy. If you’re booking for a nice base in Keswick this is the ideal location. Long stay carpark only 2 mins walk away and £12 for 24 hours.
- Francesco (10/5): Great stay, location and breakfast are fab - Beautiful room, great location, really nice freebies! Breakfast was fabulous Was quite loud, you could hear others in the corridor
- Nick (7/5): -

- Graham Luke (8/5): - Central, clean, dog friendly, nice atmosphere
- Gray (10/5): Brilliant - Stayed before so that says it all See above
- smiler888 (10/5): Friendly Staff & Great Atmosphere - Atmosphere is lovely to enjoy a social drink with friends & family. Staff are very friendly & attentive adding to the lovely atmosphere.
Food is delicious & presented well.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Victoria (10/5): Perfect for what we needed. They were really accommodating to our doggy and the breakfast was fabulous! - Very clean hotel. Fabulous breakfast and very friendly staff. The drain in the shower had a bad smell when we first went in the room.
- Dean (8/5): Good - Good location
- paullC1605BP (2/5): Poor service, poor food and disorganised staff - I don't normally write reviews, but in this case l feel it is necessary. My wife and l went for lunch to find the place deserted with no staff so we sat down and waited. After a while l went to the bar someone appeared and l asked for a menu. Eventually someone came to take our order and went away and then came back again after a few minutes to ask what our order was again. We received our drinks and waited, the food came to the table and they got the my order wrong so my wife started eating her meal which was cold and l waited for my meal to be made, which arrived well after my wife had finished eating. In the meantime the people at the table next to us left because nobody took their order. We then asked for the bill which was wrong we were overcharged and then asked to pay a tip which l refused. I felt the staff throughout were totally disinterested. Although we have been to the Royal Oak quite a few times before - due our experience we will not be going back.
- davidbB6529QW (10/5): High quality and friendly - The hotel has been refurbished tastefully and well. We had a lovely room and good food with great service by nice people. We would certainly go again.
- Elizabeth (8/5): Great stay, but a change of mattress/ bed would make all the difference. - Staff at breakfast were amazing. We were served on both days by the same lady who was very welcoming, friendly & extremely helpful. Her customer service skills were spot on.
We really liked the style/ decor or the room and bathroom which appeared to have been upgraded in recent years and it was very clean.
There were nice extra touches like chocolate truffles with the coffee machine and a bed spray to help sleep.
The toiletries in the bathroom were lovely and locally sourced. The bed was uncomfortable. The mattress needs replacing so much so that my partner had put a pillow underneath to prop it up & not fall off the bed!
We also accept we were in a great location in the centre of Keswick but at times it was noisy through the night with deliveries and waste collection (we needed the window open as the room was otherwise very warm).
- SYLVIA (10/5): Lovely Hotel in excellent location - A lovely hotel with excellent staff in a great location 👍 Nothing it was all good.
- Amanda (9/5): Great, very central place to stay. - Central location, lovely, well appointed room and very attentive staff.

- Allan (10/5): -
- Julie (9/5): - Central location, welcoming
- Aspey (8/5): - The breakfast was delicious and big. Staff were excellent , very friendly and helpful. We would stay there again. The duvet was too big for the bed and very heavy but everything else was fine.
- Explore11278183201 (10/5): Fantastic stay - The hotel is faultless its clean, beautiful decor, staff are lovely and welcoming and very dog friendly. The breakfast again was faultless this is a great location and base I will definitely be booking again soon.

- Sharon (10/5): Such a lovely location. Food great too. - Central but quiet in rooms N/A
- Michelle (10/5): Location location location - Beautiful hotel in the heart of Keswick
Room luxurious with many little extras to compliment your stay

- Mick Serpell (10/5): Great venue right in the middle of town - Very clean, lovely decor, great atmosphere, super food Nothing
- lindop2017 (10/5): Amazing stay! - Absolutely lovely pub right in the heart of Keswick.
Staff really friendly and helpful. Amazing with dietary requirements - gluten free wasn’t a problem here. Breakfast was very filling - gluten free sausages & a sour dough like bread were a first for me. Evening meal was just perfect. If you like a steak, this is a must place to visit.
Room was lovely and modern. Bathroom with the rain shower was just perfect. Complimentary chocolates & a muddy boots tray left outside your bedroom door.
- 472jennah (10/5): Homely food - Really good rib eye and the sticky toffee pudding is lush. The kitchen had closed but the manager went in and made our desserts himself.
- simonr608 (10/5): Great - Good food good beer friendly staff
- lornahmac (6/5): Disappointing dinner - Didn't stay in hotel but booked a table for four for dinner Saturday 28th march 2026 at 7.30.
Service was a bit erratic. Waited 50 mins for our first course which we enjoyed. Then tables who came in after us got their mains before we did. After another hour we finally got our mains. Two of us had steak n ale pie which came with additional gravy that was thin and was like onion water rather than a thick tasty gravy. Pointed this out to the staff and got 10% off the bill which was decent of them.
Don't know if they were just a bit unorganised but don't think we'd go back.
- Daisy (9/5): Can’t wait to return !!!! - We had a fantastic stay- rooms lovely, gorgeous breakfast, friendly staff, the location could not be better The only tiny tiny thing we would say is the shower wasn’t very powerful or hot- but wouldn’t put us off staying again.
- Gary (9/5): - Location perfect, room nice but very hot, breakfast amazing and the staff great
- Jeanette (10/5): - Very central close to all amenities Nil
