Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): - What can we say? It was PERFECT. What a place! And such kind and considerate service! 150%
- dfghdh (10/5): - Pros:
Quiet, pleasant location in a lovely village
Plenty of free parking behind the pub
Friendly staff
Lots of options for walks nearby
Comfortable double bed
Excellent breakfast included in the price
Cons:
The single bed was uncomfortable, with mattress springs clearly felt, resulting in poor sleep
Low water pressure in the shower
- Clifford (8/5): - I really enjoyed staying here - nice room, good food, a skittles alley to play on, and really friendly, accommodating staff. The only issue was that the accommodation can be a little noisy as it faces onto the beer garden of the inn, but I don’t think that spoiled our enjoyment (just something to be aware of)
- Marios (8/5): - Lovely stay
- Lynn (4/5): - Unfortunately the room wasn't ready for us and was very dirty. We had to wait outside in the rain for it to be cleaned as the pub was closed. We ended up deciding to stay elsewhere as we felt uncomfortable staying in such a dirty room. Such a shame as the pub is lovely and the girl behind the bar was very helpful, as much as she could be. It's just the state of the b&b room left us feeling they didn't know we were coming.
- Jade (8/5): - We really enjoyed the pub and the food was nice. The rooms felt quite unclean, floor was dirty upon arrival and lots of dust everywhere, didn’t use the coffee facilities as was covered in dust. Strong mildew smell, however bed was comfortable. The shower was weak and hard to maintain a consistent temperature. Is a very small village which is peaceful. Personally won’t stay again due to smell in room & cleanliness. Very nice host who was welcoming.
- Michael (8/5): Old Inn great place - Lovely old pub in a lovely friendly village. Staff were lovely and friendly and food was great especially the breakfast The last manager (forgot her name!) was really friendly and couldn't do any more for us. Will be back
- Jayne (10/5): - The property was quiet. Just one member of staff, very helpful.
- Christine (10/5): - Leaia was the perfect hostess, lovely comfortable annex room in the courtyard, comfortable beds, lovely bedding, ensuite shower room.
Plenty off parking.
We had a meal at the inn in the evening, walked round the pretty village. Ecellent cooked breakfast.
Would certainly return. Thank you.
- Paul (10/5): - Enjoyed my stay very much, enjoyable evening with the manageress and other guests in conversation, made very welcome, room was excellent and food was very good, sorry to leave.
- Anthony (10/5): - The Old Inn was welcoming, the staff friendly and helpful, and the room comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was exceptionally good.
- Geoffrey (10/5): - I chose The Old Inn as somewhere to stay while exploring Lyme Regis and what a find it was. Happy to both recommend and stay again in the future.
- Gail (10/5): - A very warm welcome from Leah the landlord. Comfortable well appointed room and a very good breakfast included in the price. Lovelly traditional village inn.
- David (10/5): - Lovely country pub with loads of character. Located in a small village, in an isolated, quiet location. Warm welcome from the Land Lady and Scrappy Do. Friendly and helpful staff. Stayed two nights, room clean and comfortable with tea/coffe and TV. Free wifi, useful as there was no phone signal. Ate at the pub both nights, tasty, reasonably priced food. Recomend the Venison pie with a glass of red.
Overall, an excellent stay, definately recommend. Will be staying again when back in the area.
- Delia (10/5): Short Break at the Old Inn Devon - We had a lovely time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was good and tasty. Room was clean and tidy. Lots of things to do in the vicinity. We walked out from the Old Inn to enjoy the local countryside and walking paths leading to part of Monarch's way. It was very easy to get to picturesque places like Branscombe, Sidmouth. Axminster and Honiton. Would come back to stay again. Still lots to see and do.
- Joanne (10/5): - A lovely room with a comfortable bed. Friendly staff and delicious food.
- Paul (10/5): - Great little pub courtyard rooms - quiet & homely - good food
- Angela (10/5): Courtyard room - Lovely room on a courtyard. Very spacious. Lovely comfy double and single bed with quality bedding. Coffee and tea making facilities . WiFi available.
- Nicola (10/5): Looked after like we were family - Amazing stay! Leah and all the staff made our family so welcome the moment we walked in the door. The kids were looked after showing them the skittle alley, darts board and tele, and introduced to all the dogs who they loved! We had plans nearby in the evening but could have happily stayed in the lovely pub all night!
- Sheelagh (10/5): Overnight stay. - Lovely comfortable bed. Very quiet and peaceful. Leah was very friendly and produced a great breakfast.
- Donna (10/5): - Wonderful from start to finish! Beautiful rooms which are set round the back of the pub and are more like little houses!
Felt so safe and slept so well, the beds are like clouds!
Beautiful quaint little pub where we had our breakfast the next day which was cooked to perfection! Leah was very attentive and the perfect host.
The rooms were very clean and had everything you need!
- Tabetha (10/5): - Leah was a wonderful host! My husband enjoyed the full English breakfast and the history attached to the property was fantastic. We had a great time!
- andrew (10/5): - delightful accomodation, charming outside patio, interior of bar and restaurant outstaning, good prices, nice staff.
- Chris (4/5): Family getaway. - The owners were really nice and friendly . Felt let down with the room. Cob webs everywhere and dust around the skirting boards and the bathroom felt dirty and not properly cleaned. We also found a lot of hairs in our dinners inside the pub which was abit disturbing. A real shame as like I said the place was really friendly but could do with a make over and abit more hygiene put in place
- Karen (2/5): - Unable to check in on arrival. Pub was shut. No Wi-Fi or phone signal to contact owner. Left a message. Was notified by a passing lady that village fete was on and pub owner could be there. An email from owner in advance would have been appreciated and a courtesy. Waited outside for over an hour
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We were warmly welcomed into a really lovely room with everything that we needed. Room was clean and comfortable. Food was delicious and plentiful, and kids needs were looked after. We were given friendly and and helpful advice when we asked about where to go fossil hunting. A lovely village too. We even bumped into a lady who was on her way to unlock the church and gave us a tour of the 1000 and 800 year old carvings!
- Barbara (8/5): - Lovely situation. Pretty village. Historic inn opposite the church.
Staff absolutely first class: kind, friendly, helpful.
Comfortable room. Enjoyed our food.
- James (8/5): - Old village
- Kate (8/5): - We stayed in an apartment in the courtyard, which was very comfortable and we all had a great night's sleep in very comfy beds. Breakfast was delicious.
- Andy (6/5): - We chose to stay here for the convenience of having the bar and dining on site at the end of a busy day. This worked on Saturday but when we went to eat at 7pm on the Sunday evening we were told that the pub is closed on Sunday evenings. This hadn't been advertised when booking or even mentioned when on site which was disappointing
- Christopher (10/5): What a gem - Charming old world inn in beautiful village of hawksworth
Bedroom was large with double sofa
Beautiful freshly cooked breakfast
Extremely friendly manageress and staff
Pub is at centre of community and we enjoyed meeting some of the locals
- Peter (10/5): - Very nice room
Country setting
Very nice ,helpful Land lady
Very enjoyable Dinner and Breakfast
- M (10/5): A cosy stay in beautiful surroundings. - We had a wonderful nights stay and wished we could have stayed longer. The room was for me, my husband and daughter and it was plenty big enough and had all the facilities we needed. Leah is a marvellous host and made our stay even more enjoyable. The food was lovely and all cooked fresh to order. Our daughter especially enjoyed having dogs and a cat around to fuss over. The location is idyllic too. And we all agreed that the beds were the most comfortable we had slept in! We will absolutely be back again.
- Sara (8/5): - Excellent Staff and service, very friendly and made you feel at home. Excellent breakfast, very comfortable bed with all you need in a room. Very good break, good location with plenty off parking. Would visit again.
- Robert (10/5): - Landlady very welcoming when we arrived by bike wet and tired. Lovely eveninf meal. Great position opposite historic church
- Ie (10/5): - Excellent all round.
- Anthony (10/5): Such a friendly welcome - We stayed two nights at the Old Inn to celebrate a special occasion in the village. As soon as we arrived we were made very welcome and enjoyed a delicious dinner in the pub on friday night which was full of friendly people.
The food was excellenmt and so we also ate there the second night.
The rooms are very quiet and comfortable, with much to recommend.
- Michael (10/5): Great stay. - Lovely little pub with rooms in quiet location. Friendly owners and food was great.
Would definitely stay again if visiting area in future.
- Anna (10/5): - Lovely room, sweet pub, excellent breakfast and a short drive from a variety of seaside towns and other places to visit. My family and I loved our stay!
- Peter (10/5): - The Pub was convenient for a family event.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great experience :) - Everything was amazing about our stay. Our room was so spacious, clean and confortable. The area was calm, and Jean is so nice and welcoming. I definitely recommend this hotel for families.
- JENNETTE (10/5): - The welcome from the proprietors and locals was incredible. The Inn is in the most picturesque village and Paul and Jacki were brilliant hosts as well as George the dog and Leah their staff member nothing was ever a trouble. Will return if ever back in the UK.
- Laura (8/5): Friendly hosts with so-so room - The hosts at the Old Inn were very friendly and helpful. We aren't giving a five-star review because although the room was very clean it was on the ground floor opening onto the courtyard and it smelled of mildew. On the other hand, the breakfast was delicious!
- Robert (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely place to stay, lovely room/en-suite. Great breakfast and pub food very good. Very friendly hosts.
- lloyd (10/5): - Room was very nice, clean and a decent size. Again the pub & forecourt were very nice & the children enjoyed playing there with their very friendly dog called George. Food was excellent. Owners are extremely friendly, but at the same time very professional. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in the area and our family will definitely return at some point - 10 out of 10
- Greg (10/5): - Top marks on this lovely, friendly Inn.
We stayed in the family room which is clean and has everything that you need.
But the real reason for staying here is that we're welcomed like old friends with hospitality that is rare to find.
For dinner, i had a homemade steak and kidney pie, packed out with goodness.
Will definitely return
- Maureen (10/5): Tranquility - Lovely clean room
Very welcoming
Very pleasant
Nothing was to much
Very accommodating
Lovely food
We will definitely will be going back
- Richard (10/5): - The room was clean, cozy and comfortable.
The breakfast was superb and loved the fresh fruit salad.
We had dinner at the restaurant, it was typical pub style. The hosts were friendly and helpful.
- Conor (10/5): A must stay! - 100% coming back! Incredibly hospitable, very comfortable room, cracking locally sourced breakfast and a pub full of character - not to forget George the dog too!
- Paul (10/5): The Old Inn - Really friendly welcome. Located in a nice quiet village. Lovely modern room, great bed, had a fantastic night’s sleep. Superb breakfast, especially the bacon!
- Alison (10/5): - We stayed for 2 nights in a really lovely, clean, comfortable and cosy room located behind the old traditional English pub. A delicious high quality breakfast with lots of different hot and cold choices to suit everyone was served by Jean who was the perfect hostess and couldn't do enough for us. We also had an evening meal on arrival which was excellent. What a find this was! Would thoroughly recommend!
- Howard (10/5): Highly recommended -
Beautifully maintained, charming inn in centre of a lovely Devonshire village. The comfortable rooms off the pretty courtyard are tastefully furnished in a homely style; the restaurant all oak, sash windows and shutters. Very eighteenth century.
Breakfast and dinner were of a very high standard with some imaginative choices (a crab linguine to die for !).
Jean and Paul made us so welcome. Over the 4 days we were there we enjoyed conversations with them and
leaving was like saying goodbye to old friends. These are people who obviously enjoy running an inn and meeting people. Thanks to both for making our break so special. Thanks are also due to the very able Leah who added to the friendly atmosphere and was a fund of local knowledge.
- Wesley (10/5): - Jean and paul were excellent hosts. Lovely pub and our room was fanastic. Dinner and breakfast was great. When we are back in the south west we will book again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Homely Hotel - My has medical issues, you could not find a more understanding-careing- helpful - family run hotel.
Evening meal 5* room 5* breakfast 5*.
We will return.
Steve & Sue
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location was lovely.
- Paul (10/5): Wish we had booked a longer stay. - This was a lovely stay, Quiet and peaceful location with a family room that was just so comfortable. Even the roll out bed looked good and both my kids seemed to sleep well.
We were well looked after from arrival to departure and everything was clean and tidy.
Breakfast was above anything we expected and such a personal service. Mainly because we usually end up in chain hotels because only need somewhere to sleep through always being busy.
I would have loved to stay for longer and enjoyed the peacefulness, pub and had the opportunity to explore the village and the menu. Kids wanted to stay because of being smitten by George the Labrador.
Thank you for making us welcome and genuine interest.
- Fran (10/5): LOVELY WELCOME - Very comfortable, spacious and clean room. Jean was the perfect hostess making us feel really welcome. We had our granddaughter with us who loved it there and was made to feel very special. The food in the pub is lovely and the breakfast perfect in every way. Nothing was too much trouble. The location is totally away from it all and perfect for a base to visit local attractions.
- David (10/5): Great pub stay in Hawkchurch. - Lovely location, in a picturesque English village. Very friendly and helpfull staff. Good choice of food and drink.
- Philip (10/5): Quiet, friendly Country Pub - This was our third stay at the Old Inn. Hospitality excellent. Our hosts Jean and Paul along with Leah were so friendly. Our room was very comfortable and situated in a very pleasant courtyard. The food and menu was a delight and so well priced. If you are after peace and quiet then you have it. We shall return.
- Carolyn (10/5): Cosy stay. - Lovely overnight stay before fossiling trip at Lyme. Very warm and spacious room and bathroom. Nice touches like biscuits and tissues. Generous breakfast.
- Dave (10/5): - The room was separated in what looks a former stable block. It had everything we needed. Clean and comfortable.
The pub is mainly for dining and was very popular, good choice of food. There was no draft ales on, but bottled instead. Just in case of another COVID lockdown and waste beer.
The breakfast next morning was great and set us up for the day.
Paul and Jean the owners were excellent, very friendly and helpful.
We would stay here again if in the area.
- Janice (10/5): A great welcome in The Old Inn, Hawkschurch - We had a lovely overnight stay at The Old Inn. Jean and Paul made us feel very welcomed and the accommodation was great. We had an excellent meal the evening we arrived and enormous breakfast in the morning. The pub was very warm and cosy and the village a delight. George the resident golden retriever made a big fuss of us, which we loved. We would thoroughly recommend visiting here.
- Sarah (10/5): - The rooms are set around an attractive courtyard. We had a large room which had everything we needed and it was warm and cosy. The food in the pub is excellent and the breakfast was stunning.....fresh and cooked from scratch. The owners are very friendly and we had a great stay. We definitely intend to return...... soon!
- Richard (10/5): - Paul and Jean were very welcoming and we had a delightful two days staying with at the old Inn.
- Lauren (10/5): Loveliest place and owners - Lovely find when we need to stay near family. We stayed with our two year old and they were very welcoming and accommodating and provided a travel cot and brought dinner that we ordered to our room. Will definitely stay again!
- Mark (6/5): Mostly fabulous - Paul and Jean were lovely and the food was great. Location is fab too. The only negatives were that the shower in room 3 was an intermittant trickle and the loo seat was unusually and inconveniently far too small, especially the opening. That I’m sure is easily rectified. Last minor moan was a faint smell of damp in the room but not too bad once we’d opened the window. Other than that everything else was super. A sofa and other comforts.
There is a convenient free car space at the rear which backs onto open countryside. The front overlooks a beautiful little scene of village church and cottages. The othere people in the bar / restaurant were most pleasant and again the food was homemade and very tasty.
A very tranquil, peaceful place to stay with friendly hosts and their big soft golden retreiver out back quietly watching over the place. Most enjoyable stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the owners and great having pub on property.,, definitely need a car to get around as quite a distance from amenities. This was our favourite property so far on this trip
- Verified traveler (10/5): A great find - Really welcoming hosts, great little find, room was spacious clean and had everything needed. Breakfast was delicious in the morning and nice to relax and help yourself. We will definitely be back when we visit the area again.
- Hayley (10/5): Perfect Old inn - Lovely place to stay, beautiful rooms. Continental breakfast, full English available , didn't have time to sample the evening food but very busy pub & lots of people eating; looked lovely. Beautiful village, fabulous views.
- kevin (10/5): Lovely b and b - Excelent band b run by a lovely couple wonderful breakfast will definately return Kevin and debbie
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Owners Paul and Jean are very helpful and welcoming
Room well appointed comfortable, plenty of draw and wardrobe space, with the usual hotel bits and bobs, kettle, hairdryer, iron. The ensuite is fairly spacious, though being of a fairly large build I did find the shower cubicle a little snug. I had a good night's sleep, with little or no external noise. This is significant as the bar/resturarant were closed on the sunday night I stayed here, the rooms are along oneside of the courtyard at the back of the Inn, where there are a selection of tables and chairs as well as this being the access to the car park at the rear, so there is the potential for noise during bar/restuarant opening hours especially during the summer months.
The breakfast was excellent ,cooked to order, ( yes I went for the full English, one of my few travelling weaknesses.) Also on offer were a selection of cereals, toast, bread, cold meats, cheeses, fruit etc.
A word of warning if you use Sat Nav to get you here especially if approaching from the A303 and the east via Crewkerne, as i Did. once you get on to the B3165 stay on it until you reach wareham cross (sign posted before you turn off) before turning towards Hawkchurch, Th sat nav direct route followed very narrow, high banked windy roads with few passing places, the Wareham cross road to Hawkchurch is much wider.
In conclusion I enjoyed my stay here and would reccommend it and will stay here again, when attending courses at River Cottage HQ
- Andy (10/5): Excellent - All good, will stay again. Only slight downside...WiFi in the bar but dodgy in the room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great warm welcome, super breakfast and good food in the evening.
- Halina (10/5): Great week end - Jim and I really enjoyed our break, we were well looked after by our hosts, food was excellent, room comfortable, especially the bed. Looking forward to going again. Thank you X X
- Philip (10/5): Great Village Pub with great food and lovely hosts - This was our second stay at the Old Inn. We used it as a base to visit Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Dorchester. The room, food, hospitality are all excellent. If you want to get a feeling for Village Life and how it becomes the hub of a village then look no further than Hawkchurch and The Old Inn. Great to chat with the locals in the evening and to enjoy the company of our hosts Paul, Jean and Leah. If you want a quiet Village pub and friendliness then look no further. We shall be returning.
- Chris (8/5): Well worth a visit! - Very friendly owners who made our stay a pleasure! Also, fantastic full English Breakfast!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable, warm and relaxing stay, nice continental breakfast included.
- TrudyandDave (10/5): two night stay - We were attending a family wedding in the area. The Old Inn was an excellent choice and Paul and Jean couldn't have been better hosts. We would certainly return if we are in the area again. First class hospitality!
- Caroline (10/5): Comfortable rooms - Clean rooms, well equipped. Owners friendly + helpful. Excellent food in the bar.
- ms rosemary a (10/5): A treat! - A lovely stay in this delightful old inn with a great family room in a courtyard out at the back. Excellent friendly hosts who can't do enough for you to make your stay comfortable! Great food too !! Hope to be back!
- Mary (10/5): Lovely Inn in quiet village - Jean and Paul made our visit very relaxing and enjoyable. The food on the Saturday evening was excellent - we had scallops to start which melted in the mouth. The breakfast was more than adequate and set us up for the day.
We will definitely return for another stay.
- JULIENE (8/5): Good Pub Stay - When we arrived they seemed to have us booked in for another night (incorrect) but made up the last spare room, which was really good. Great size, large bathroom, small shower, but very clean and tidy. Had good night sleep. Great location in a pretty small village.
- J (10/5): - Lovely warm welcome. Nothing too much trouble. Wonderful quiet court yard to sit in. Great breakfast
Excellent
- Sonya M. (10/5): Great service! - Unfortunately, we had to cancel our reservation at the Old Inn in Axminster due to family commitments. I called in the morning on the last day to cancel the reservation, and Paul and his wife were very accommodating and helpful. The VRBO app would not let me cancel, as there was a specific time and day associated with this rental, but the owners said they would take care of the cancellation at their end. Very helpful. Hope to make it to Axminster next visit.
- wendy (10/5): Lovely welcoming country pub. - Warm welcome, very attentive, spacious room, lovely dog, superb food. Would definitely go back and also recommend.
- Jean (10/5): Friendly and welcoming - Really enjoyed our stay here. Ideally situated for getting to resorts but having the benefit of a countryside location. The owners could not have been more friendly and welcoming.
The dinner in the inn is well worth having, we had the fish and chips and meat pie, both really good. We mainly had the continental breakfast but you can have a full English breakfast for an extra charge, the day we had that we didn’t need to eat anything else until the evening!
Tip: If you want a newspaper from the village’s community shop order it the day before as they don’t get in extra newspapers, it’s only round the corner from the Inn
- Katrina (8/5): Lovely setting. - Very nice. Hosts lovely. Rooms charming and well sized, breakfast very nice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely rooms, very friendly manager m staff. Location in centre of village was nice. Secure access was excellent especially with having grand children with us. Booked B&B but was only continential breakfast, English breakfast was an extra charge, which was a little disappointing, but travelled to see family close so breakfast wasn’t required. Overall we had an excellent stay.
- James (10/5): Great stay - Amazing place to stay. Service was outstanding, hosts were incredibly welcoming and nothing was too much. Rooms spacious and homely. George the dog was an added bonus
- Sara (10/5): - Lovely old pub in pictureques, historic and quiet village. Excellent room, friendly and attentive owners and staff. Good food, reasonably priced. Good parking and wi-fi. great location to explore the area
- Gloria (10/5): Set in a quiet country village - Fantastic setting to have a quiet holiday.
Jean and Paul are amazing hosts, nothing is to much trouble for them.
Food is excellent with a wide choice for continental breakfast and evening meal.
It was my husbands birthday on the day we were leaving when we arrived for breakfast there was a card on the table for him.
Information folder in room gives maps and details of various walks in the area.
Would definitely stay there again.
- Lisa (10/5): - Jean & Paul are so lovely and welcoming. We loved our stay here that much that we’ve booked again 😊
