Guest Reviews
- David (6/5): It was tolerable for 2 days stay but will not stay there again. - The onsen was very good with 5 pools at different temperatures to choose from. All the bugs in your room. Very hard beds. The exterior is very run down and needs a lot of work. Limited parking beside hotel.
- Ching Kun (6/5): - Very very old. No air-con. Breakfast is simple. Staff is friendly.
BOOKING.COMで予約したから。
- Vladimir (9/5): - Hot springs were exceptional. Free sake testing/ soft drinks/coffee. Nothing
- Andrew (8/5): Nice Place / Close to National Park - It was close to the national park. I loved the vibe of the small town, rooms were dated but clean. Added to the ambience of the town. The onsen was nice. Parking was easy. Close walk to everything.
- Deog-Soon (5/5): Old glory... - free drink service. the drinks were also in good taste. Building, room interior and most of facilities were outdated. Room was extremely hot, but no air conditioner in the room.
- Masahito (4/5): -
- Saana (8/5): Outdated but charming, amazing baths - Great bathing facilities with several baths, no issue with tattoos. Free breakfast. Traditional washitsu room with raised beds worked well. Lots of parking space. Charming in a time capsule kind of way. Reception (younger man) spoke good English and was very friendly. The hotel is definitely a little outdated and would benefit from some basic repairs. No aircon, but a fan in the room at least. No plugs near the beds as it was a tatami room with beds added.
- Ian (7/5): Good -
- Keng (3/5): Poor - Hotel room size is ok. No air-conditioned.
- Chung Ming (6/5): -
- Wing Sam (8/5): -
- Finn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Esther (8/5): -
- Claire (8/5): Very good -
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ernest (6/5): A quaint property with many memorabilia from the past era - Interesting old world charm Its age is showing in the rooms. The bathroom is tiny. The room door needs careful handling when opening and closing, sign of wear with age. The TV turned on by itself at 4am, a bit spooky.
- Jeremy (2/5): BAD! had to apologize to my family! Not recommending this place at all. Banned! - Nothing much because its a VERY old hotel. Even the phone is a rotary type!!
Very pricey. We came from another area very popular and crowded and this place was just barely $100 cheaper and it does not have so many things and has the cheek to charge such a price! No air-con at all. Thankfully, it was beginning to cool down in early Oct, but still, it was not as expected. Can't imagine hotels still do not have a/c at all.
Dusty old worned out carpets.
The laundry room was in a deep corner of the hotel thats i either being renovated or closed off.
The overall hotel looks worned out. From the outside, it even looks closed or abandoned. :(
Bed was sagging in the middle, and when we asked for extra pillows, they barely had 2 left in their closet.
Its nothing at all like the pictures in Booking.com.
- Alice (8/5): - Property needs Reno
- David (9/5): Good value for money option in Akan-Mashu National Park area - Whilst the public areas reflect the age of the hotel and years of wear and tear, the room I occupied was in pretty good condition. The room was spacious and had all the requisite facilities. It was delightfully warm and cosy all the time. The onsen is a fine facility despite its age and has 4 or 5 baths of varying temperatures. Breakfast was a buffet with a reasonable choice of dishes and started at 6.30, so plenty of opportunity for the quick getaway afterwards. The hotel is also close to a number of pretty decent restaurants. Overall, I enjoyed my 3 nights in this hotel. It's good value for money and a much more affordable alternative than the hotels on either Lake Akan or Lake Kussharo. The only thing I didn't like was that the bed didn't have a headboard which meant that I had to make a workaround so that I could read in bed.
- Esther (7/5): We stayed for 3 nights, breakfast is simple but taste good. Even though the hotel is dated but the room we stayed in has - Great onsen. I don’t feel welcome as a foreign tourist. When front desk staffs were dealing with local visitors, they are lively and cheerful. When is my turn to check in , they just talk like robot . We stayed in room 310, the room is ok, bathroom amenities eg bath and hand soap are all diluted. I used the soap that is provided inside the onsen, they are thick and soapy.
- David (3/5): Past its prime - Fin de siecle air of slow decline, mainly due to lack of maintenance
- Peter (7/5): Good -
- Peter (6/5): Spaceous rooms, requiring some extra cleaning, and also very hot during summer due to no AC. - A good onsen. In the western room the toilet had a smell of old urine. There was dust several places in the whole room.
During the summer the rooms get very hot, and it is difficult to cool down with just a fan. It is also difficult to keep the window open if there is a strong smell of sulphur from the outside. The onsen was good the first time we visited, and not so much the second time where the water temperature was markedly cooler than stated.
- Wan-chung (8/5): - Nice hot springs outdoor and indoor.
- Janice (6/5): Room is spacious. Bathroom is musky cos lacks exhaust / ventilator - Like the natural sulphur bath. Good breakfast buffet. Poorly maintained. Felt cheated cos there is no aircon in the room. Fortunately the outdoor temperature was 18-20, I opened the window to let the cold air in
- Paul (9/5): Classic hotel with FANTASTIC baths, in a cool little onsen-town nestled in the mountains. I dig. - Kawayu Onsen is a lovely little spot - as long as this is what you're looking for - and this is the perfect hotel to stay in if you're coming. I've been to a lot of onsen towns in Japan, some with fantastic waters, some with picturesque streets to wander around in your yukata and geta. Kawayu, though, is a quiet little spot nestled in the mountains with lovely people, a bit of a "frontier" vibe and WONDERFUL waters. The town is centred on a great little ashi-yu (natural footbath) a couple of souvenir shops with a wild-west mountain vibe (hand-carved bear-claw pendants, anyone?) some great restaurants (Inaka-ya Genpei - HIGHLY recommended) and an old-skool sumo museum dedicated to a local hero.
The hotel itself is a bit "Showa-era-poi" and the waters, for which this town is justly famous, are bloody great. I used not dig the sulphuric (eggy) onsens but this place has converted me: it seems, unlike the vast majority of Japanese onsens, the bath water is not diluted at all, and - due to its purity - there are signs all over as to how long you should spend in each bath (there are a variety of temperatures maintained) so as to not be dissolved away(!) I loved it. I doubt the waters actually have all the healing properties they claim, but they certainly put a smile on my face,
This is far from where I live, but I’d love to visit again (wearing my (hand-carved bear-claw pendant)! It's a pretty popular spot, both with tour groups from abroad and with the people of Hokkaido. As a result, the hotel itself was full of families who were (let's be generous here) maybe a little too tired to be able to even attempt to keep their children quiet. But that's hardly the hotel's fault. Maybe I should stop being such a grump.
The breakfast was serviceable but hardly exciting - much like the kind of thing you'd find in a mid-range business hotel rather than what you'd expect in a place looking like this. It was OK.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A pleasant stay - Good location. Spacious room. Very very friendly staff. Highly recommended!
- Shang (10/5): - Very Good view of Lake Toya!
- Thiem huat (8/5): Very satisfying stay. - Comfortable, quiet stay, with free parking facility, and satisfying breakfast (free), and complimentary sake included.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Siew Chin (8/5): - Very good onsen. Ample space for parking. However there are only a few lots just beside the hotel. The other parkings spaces are a stone throw away. More convenient with own transport.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Marcel (8/5): Nice Japanese room, great onsen. - A bit older hotel, but the room is fine, the breakfast is good and they have a great onsen.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- YUK PUI (8/5): -
- Kenneth (7/5): A quiet place in a small town with nice hot spring baths. - Across the street from a nice park and public foot bath. The town is small, so walking distance to everything. Multiple restaurants within five minutes walk. Parking in adjacent lot. Friendly front desk staff. Free sake tasting at lobby bar in the evening. The place seemed dark. Dimly lit hallways and bathroom. No lights at all at the front door (no sign, no lights).
- Amir (9/5): Excellent hotel in kawayu onsen - The staff were superbly helpful, and the room was clean and spacious, the onsen was great. Not having dinner at the hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Cheryl (6/5): - The whole hotel is very dated. It seems like all they did was to renovate the lobby, so it looks new modern shiny, whereas the rooms are left in the 80s/90s era. We had one of the big rooms, with tatami and also a supposed double bed. The bed was not comfortable at all, and way too small for 2 persons. We ended up sleeping on the futons in the tatami section of the room on the second night. Staff wasn't rude, but not friendly like we will expect of the typical Japanese hospitality. The onsen is huge, but really badly maintained. It's a pity, as there is so much potential at this onsen. One thing to note though - many of the hotels/inns in Teshikaga seems to be pretty old and run-down too. So this might just be one of the better ones already.
- MEI CHAU (8/5): Value for money -
- anton (6/5): Rustic hotel with great baths - We could only get a Japanese style room but with two 80+ yr olds getting up and down off the floor was difficult...hence low comfort score.
Room was nicely done but small for 3 with suitcases. Onsen felt very authentic with the smell of sulphur in the air and hot steamy pools
- luxingren (6/5): Good location for exploring Akan National Park - This hotel, which is actually located in Kawayu Onsen rather than Teshikaga, seemed to be the only place open in mid-April - the other hotels were closed. Staff were friendly. We had a wayou double, which is a room with a small double bed connected to a slightly raised area containing tatami mats, low coffee table, chairs and TV (Japanese channels only). Wifi wasn't available in the room, but it is in the downstairs lobby area. The room had poor soundproofing - hallway conversations and sounds next door were easily heard. The room itself was terribly dated and worn out - everything should be junked and furnished again. It seemed OK from a cleanliness standpoint. The all Japanese buffet had quite a few choices, but the quality of the food wasn't very good. The onsen baths using geo-thermal hot springs water were good. There were a couple of different baths, and although I don't read Japanese, my take on the difference between them, besides a slight temperature variation, was that the PH levels and mineral content differed. Parking was free, and next to the hotel.
For a single night, this hotel was OK. But it isn't a hotel I'd want to return to or recommend to others.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Sulfur smell and thin walls - The hotel was pretty run down and our room had a sulfur smell throughout the night because the windows are not fully sealed. Luckily we were only there for 1 night.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Matthias (8/5): - Hotel with clean and big room.
Hotel staff was very welcoming.
Nice large hot spring in the hotel.
Cheap and decent breakfast buffet.
The village around the hotel looks very abandoned, though there are a few nice souvenir shops and restaurants around.
- Verified traveler (8/5): A comfortable stay for adventures around the lakes - After driving through long distance in pitch darkness, the reception at the hotel was truly heartwarming. We were met by one Mr Chiba, who has been extremely helpful throughout our stay. He helped us plan our adventures to the neighboring lakes and mountains.
