Guest Reviews
- Florent (1/5): The most disappointing hotel experience of our trip to Japan. - The private onsen in the room. Our stay at this hotel was an absolute disaster and by far the worst experience we had during our trip to Japan.
For a hotel charging nearly €800 per night, the level of service and overall experience were completely unacceptable. It is not unreasonable at this price point to expect true luxury standards, professionalism, and attention to detail — none of which were present here.
The staff were absolutely not up to the standard expected for a hotel in this category. The check-in process was chaotic and painfully inefficient: it took more than 45 minutes just to check in. Every time we asked a question, the employee assisting us had no answers and constantly had to go back and forth to repeat what their supervisor was saying instead of being properly informed or trained.
The room cleanliness was mediocre at best, certainly not what one would expect from a luxury establishment. On top of that, there was a persistent sewage/drain smell throughout the property, barely masked by an overwhelming amount of incense in the hallways.
To make matters worse, we suffered food poisoning after the very first evening at the hotel, which completely ruined the beginning of our stay.
The hotel also provides very few shuttle services, making transportation unnecessarily complicated, and the reception was unable to book a taxi, which is frankly unbelievable for a hotel positioning itself as high-end hospitality.
Overall, this hotel is absolutely not worth the price and falls dramatically short of what anyone should expect from a luxury hotel experience. Deeply disappointing from start to finish.
- Andrea (10/5): We were blown away with the property. It was breathtaking. - Such a beautiful property. Our room with a private onsen was spectacular. The food and staff was amazing! My only issue was the bathroom lighting. It was to dim.
- Nicola (10/5): Lovely location beautiful surroundings and the most amazing staff - The location and the staff the room and the private onsen The lack of choice related to food for dinner as we can be fussy
- ross (10/5): Tonosawa is magic - Tonosawa is magic. I dont think I've ever slept or eaten better in my life. The staff are incredibly attentive, the rooms are beautiful, the beds very large and comfortable, and a private Onsen on the balcony. The gym is suprisingly well equipped. The spa and massage top quality and very relaxing. The whole experience was pure luxury from beginning to end. We should have stayed 2 or 3 nights. Highly recommended. Nothing. We would definitely like to stay here again.
- giovanni (10/5): Soggiorno eccezionale, struttura di alto livello - Tutto

- Alessandra (10/5): Enchanting experience! - One of the biggest highlights of our visit to Japan. From the moment we walked in we just wanted to absorb all the warmth and friendly hospitality. The private onsen is next level. We were in it every chance we got. We loved everything about this property Nothing
- Xuong (10/5): -
- Megan (10/5): A perfect, relaxing stay - We loved everything! The location was breathtaking. The staff were exceptional. Our room was comfortable and we loved wearing the yukatas to the dining room and around the property. The meals were outstanding, served at a perfect pace and well explained by the table staff. The private pool and sauna were fantastic too. But the main highlight was the onsen tub on the deck (with cold water available to help control the overall temperature) which was always ready and very inviting. This was one of our favourite travel experiences ever. No suggestions of things to improve. Everything essential was provided. It was a perfect stay.

- Viet (10/5): I love this stay. I stayed with my wife and we absolutely enjoyed our visit. - The atmosphere and ambiance was beautiful. The staff made us feel very welcome.
- Sofya (10/5): - This was an amazing stay, the staff was highly accommodating to our dietary restrictions, and made the stay very special in celebration of my engagement. It was lovely to have the private onsen in the room, very relaxing experience. We wished we stayed more than one night
- Katarzyna (10/5): -
- Loretta (9/5): Highly recommend this place for the food and the quietness of the hotel. - It was quiet and private. The dinner was amazing. Although we had to leave early, we got to enjoy our breakfast take away. The outdoor shower section was cold and the breeze came straight through whilst showering. The bath fronted onto a road, so was a little uncomfortable getting in and out of the bath.

- Robert (10/5): - This is a beautiful property. Rooms are spacious and the private outdoor thermal bath is just what you need after a long day of exploring Hakone. The staff of the inn are friendly and helpful. Delicious breakfast with traditional or western options. Can't say enough good things about this experience. Highly recommended.

- Natalie (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, room with private onsen. Easy access to Halone Yumoto and other sights
- Heinrich (10/5): Peacefull property surrounded by woods. Personalized, pampered experience. - -Small, quiet property surrounded by beautiful wilderness.
-Large, comfortable rooms with private onsen.
-Rooms have a lot of privacy, with balconies facing the woods.
-Very personalized service, starting at check in.
-7-course traditional Japanese dinner was fantastic.
-We hired a massage treatment which was top notch. -Staff is extremely helpful and willing to please. However, lack of English proficiency was noticeable and caused some communication issues, even by (low) Japanese standards.
-It is a very nice property, but some design features feel dated (i.e. dark, windowless corridors).
- Arthur (10/5): - This place is amazing. It’s beautiful relaxing and the staff couldn’t be more lovely
- Pedro (10/5): Fantastic in everything, we want to go back! - Where can we start? The food was simply out of this world, both dinner and breakfast. They catered to a vegetarian and were very attentive. The room was amazing, spacious, with all kinds of amenities included, free drinks, tea and coffee, a Bluetooth speaker and of course a private osen on the balcony facing a bamboo forest. Everything was top-notch. We booked the pool/sauna downstairs, and that was fantastic, as well as the gym. We also enjoyed drinks at the bar, including the Japanese whiskey. But the service is what makes this hotel so singular, and their incredible attention to detail; During check-in, you enjoy a welcoming drink, and ladies can choose their yukata style. The staff is so attentive and welcoming that you feel special every time. The location is great and beautiful too, with a bridge connecting the hotel to the main road, which gives a nice touch of exclusivity. There is a bus stop right in front of the bridge, and they offered us a shuttle to go back to the train station after checking out. We highly recommend this hotel.
- Madeliene (10/5): Romantic and private escape - Everything was better than I expected. Very private, food great, staff wonderful, room exceptional. Not a negative for us, but it is fairly isolated. And it isn’t easy to get into town to explore Hakone, but it is a perfect place to relax and experience an onesone in Japan.
- Pamela (10/5): - Beautiful property with lovely staff and great dinner service. Probably the best meal we had while in Tokyo and the most relaxing time as well.
- EA (9/5): -
- MARIA (7/5): Nice relaxing time not sure that is worth the money though - Very nice location, great private onsen Needs restoration, staff are nice but speak very limited english.
Difficulty in communication, staff member accidentally woke us up at 6.45 in the morning to deliver towels that were for another room.
Nice location, great onsen but needs some restoration to make up for the money and staff that can have a better communication in english.

- Deborah (10/5): A wonderful experience that we would reallly recommend - Everything.
The beautiful location, the excellent food, the friendly efficient staff, the quiet relaxing atmosphere. Bathing in our private onsen at night listening to the breeze rustling through the bamboo felt almost magical The noise of the frogs at night! I should have remembered to bring earplugs!
- Koki (10/5): - よかった
- Kirstin (9/5): A tranquil decadent escape. - A decadent and special treat. Everything looks, feels and is 5 star. Our room was stunning and massive and the onsen on the balcony was fabulously relaxing. The kaiseki dinner is not to be missed. Everything we tried was meticulously presented and tasted delicious. The lounge and bar areas were also lovely and the menu quite extensive. If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing escape that still feels like a treat, stay here. There is a spa onsite, we weren’t able to experience it due to availability, but if you’re keen on an extra treat, id suggest booking a slot ahead with the hotel ahead of your arrival.
- Geraldine (9/5): Superb -
- yancheng (10/5): - good
- Trang (10/5): Beautiful, Luxurious Hotel! - This hotel is the definition of luxury. Beautiful lobby and the rooms are ENORMOUS even by western standards. Even the standard rooms are essentially suites. The rooms were luxurious and the amenities are beyond any that I have ever seen. The cost is definitely higher than most but it is definitely justified for the private onsen and spa-like amenities. The staff was so incredibly kind as they checked us in with welcome-drinks, helped us pink out our yukatas and gave us a tour of the rooms and facilities. The only complaint is that since its at the base of the mountain, the buses to get up to Hakone or down to the station can fill up very quickly. I'd recommend getting a taxi, which the hotel is happy to arrange for you. We declined not knowing the buses would be full, which unfortunately made us miss our shinkansen. But if your schedule is a lot more lax, it shouldn't be as much of an issue.
- Holly (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing helpful staff, friendly and professional. Clean and beautiful hotel with amazing onsens. Delicious food (I had the traditional japanese menu) with perfect presentation. Provided Yukata which you can choose the design, as well as hair accessories and face masks. Very luxurious, this hotel exceeded all my expectations N/a

- Liu (10/5): Brilliant - Here’s an English review based on your experience:
**Review:**
The hotel is conveniently located near the train station, with a direct bus stopping right at its entrance. As we approached the hotel, staff warmly greeted us with a bow—a lovely touch of Japanese-style hospitality. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the lounge offered a great selection of complimentary beverages, including alcoholic drinks. We also appreciated the complimentary minibar in our spacious room, which featured a private onsen with a scenic view. The service was exceptional, especially from Zhan, who went above and beyond to ensure a seamless stay. Upon hearing our needs, he proactively assisted us and even checked shuttle bus details despite us not using it. Notably, while previous reviews mentioned language barriers with staff, the hotel has clearly taken feedback to heart: Zhan, originally from Jiangxi, China, delivered impeccable Japanese-style service while effortlessly communicating in Chinese—a standout detail that deserves praise. This thoughtful blend of cultural authenticity and guest-centered improvements makes this hotel a top choice.
- Keith (10/5): Top class ryokan - A private oasis in an idyllic location. The staff are fantastically attentive, the room has everything and the included meals are a true taste of everything you could expect and more
- David (10/5): - We loved the in room onset. It was very relaxing and calm. We were able to get a lot of rest during our 2 day stay there. Thanks.

- Zoe (10/5): Great experience which will - The best food I have ever had and the staff were amazing. They saw on my passport that my birthday was in a few days and gave me dessert with happy birthday on it which was really nice. They saw room is great and I love you can change the temperature of the Onsen so you can stay in it longer. The only thing that could need improving is better pillows but everything else is great!
- Jigglybananabut (10/5): A very high quality place to rest and enjoy the local cuisine. - The breakfast and dinner meals were amazing, very delicious and very filling. The room was gorgeous and the private onsen was perfect. The staff were friendly and facilities were very luxurious. I also enjoyed the spa very much. An extra mirror in the room or a vanity table would be very nice. Otherwise no complaints.

- Kristen (10/5): A bucket list stay! - Amenities and dinner were exceptional. The staff were extremely helpful and went the extra mile to make our stay special. The room was comfortable and relaxing and offered a different side to Japan centered more on the nature and just how beautiful Hakone is. We came for a big celebration and an unexpected change of plans left us asking staff for a great deal of help in trying to accommodate a long itinerary. Staff were extremely patient and helpful in making this happen. They took exceptional care in making sure we had a take-away meal for our very early departure. That day ended up being the most memorable of our entire trip.… We owe our most precious memories of our trip to the staff and we can’t thank you enough! Absolutely nothing!
- Connie (10/5): - I saw some videos on YouTube regarding this onsen hotel and decided to try it. It is expensive, around US$ 450 per person per night. It includes dinner, breakfast and a private onsen inside the room. I had two friends sharing the room with me; the room is spacious and the hot onsen tub is outside on the balcony. The hotel does not have public onsen as every room has its own. The moment we walked into the lobby, the staff greeted us with big smile and courtesy and offered us the welcome drink and snack. We were given some yukata to select and the staff showed us to the room. The kaiseki dinner were so delicious and fancy. We got to choose western or Japanese style breakfast and also delicious. The services from all staff were first class and made you feel every dollar was well spent.
The hotel is about 10-15 minutes by bus from the Hakone train station. The bus stop is next to the bridge and once you cross that bridge, the hotel is in front of you. It is very quiet and secluded from the busy train station. I highly recommend this hotel.
- Laurie (7/5): Our stay was excellent- we felt like what we wanted to accomplish happened - relaxation and a true Japanese experience. - The staff were all incredibly kind and helpful. The food was really good, and we are happy we ate breakfast and dinner there. The room was spotlessly clean and had all the amenities we needed. The onsen was not open for use as they are renovating it. I was not aware of that.
- Karen (9/5): Superb - the presentation of the hotel and the environment, over all is a great experience a little more details can be added:
- selections of snacks or maybe ice cream available after the hot spring
- shower gel and shampoo should be kept in the shower area (i had to run out and fetch coz it wasn't in the shower room)
- a dry stool for us to put our towels next to the open air onsen
- Caroline (10/5): Relaxing stay in Hakone - Loved this hotel!!
- Good location near a bus stop
- Very good dinner and breakfast
- Room was incredible, the outdoor bath was a great experience
- deWayne (10/5): - Liked the private onsen
- Michelle (10/5): Truly a magical place - What did I like...I believe it is what did I loved and still love about this place. It far exceeded my expectations. The location requires taking a bus or taxi if you're coming from Odawara Station, but it is about a 15 min ride. Right when we arrived, a staff was waiting at the front gate to welcome us. From the check-in experience and staff showing us our room as well as going through dinner plans for the night was so detailed and amazing. The room was very big and everything you needed was available. The private onsen tub was impeccable and provided a beautiful view outside. Dinner was delicious and memorable. Every step of our dinner journey was followed with amazing service and a wonderful night with my partner. Breakfast was truly magical and relaxing. We chose the traditional Japanese breakfast and the food was perfect for the day. I would love to come back here During the time I came here (October) season, I noticed the mosquitoes at the hotel were huge. Although I know the hotel is in the mountains, I didn't find bug spray in the room or outdoors near the balcony. That would probably be the only thing I recommend but I have nothing I didn't like about this hotel. Everything was met with beyond expectation.
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional - Calm. Great food
- Sapir (10/5): Exceptional - The room was very big and had everything we needed. The staff was helpful and nice. The food was extraordinary. When we stayed there the main onsen was closed due to construction and they didn’t offer any alternative if you want the experience of a public onsen.
- Shuairong (10/5): Exceptional -
- Emil (10/5): - Great personal onsen experience with privacy
- Patrick (10/5): Perfect and relaxing stay - Beautiful location, helpful and friendly staff
