Guest Reviews
- Wendell (8/5): - This was a rustic motel with nostalgic character from the 40’s & 50’s. The current owners are very accommodating and appear to be serious about maintaining the premises and keeping the nostalgic air. On the edge of town but not out of reach of good ears and groceries.
- Beverley (10/5): Good value - Parking easy, linen and room clean but needs a bit of updating but this didn't spoil our stay. Staff were fantastic.
- Mary (10/5): - Sunset Motel is a great place to stay for the night. Quiet and clean, and the staff is helpful.
- Erin (10/5): - Very cute hotel, looks recently updated. Cute room decor. Beds r very comfy.
- Patrick (10/5): My stay at Sunset Motel. - I went to visit relatives and I have stayed here before. They have clean rooms, friendly staff, and great prices.
- julie (8/5): - Inexpensive laundry on site. Clean indoor pool. Clean room and nice staff.
- Ryan (10/5): - Great staff and rates...clean remodeled rooms
- 748andin (2/5): SERVICE DOG USERS BEWARE; FAKE SERVICE DOG USERS GO FOR IT! - When i arrived, a woman was sitting outside and immediately asked if I was "Expedia". I had my assistance animal with me and she told me I would be charged $10 for it unless I had her paperwork. I informed her about ADA law and she called her daughter (who maybe owns the place) but continued to say that they expect certification for service dogs.
When her daughter arrived, I was already pissed. Her daughter stated the same case and after explaining the same laws to her, she said she prefers it when people bring "the card". I let her know every single one of those cards is a fake bought off the internet and she said she still prefers it.???
Either way, besides being uneducated on ADA law, the daughter was much more pleasant, helpful, and processed me quickly (without the additional charge).
WARNING TO TRUE SERVICE DOG USERS: DO NOT COME HERE. IF YOU BOUGHT YOUR "CERTIFICATION" OFF THE INTERNET, THEY WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU.
There is no excuse for trying to enforce laws that do not exist when ada.gov is free and accessible.
Beyond this issue, I wouldn't dare to shower here due to the shower obviously not being regularly scrubbed, but otherwise it was adequate for the price. WILL NOT STAY AGAIN.
- David (10/5): Nice Motel - Nice motel with friendly staff and spacious room. Great room for the price.
- Jon (6/5): - The room was clean and comfortable. But the door was hard to open due to poor fitment. The door seal was shot and allowed outside air and light to come through. The coffee maker had mold and hard water deposits so bad it took 20 minutes to run 1 cup of water through it.
- Tom (8/5): Not perfect, but fixed. - There were some problems with the room (s). They made it all work in the end and my stay was good. I appreciate that I was able to check in two hours early. The indoor pool looked good and people were using it.
- Holly (10/5): - This was a nice roadside motel. It was clean, the beds were comfy, and the shower pressure was great. The woman that checked me in was super nice. Great value for the price!
- James (10/5): Great stay - It was a really nice motel ro stay at. It was quiet. The staff was awesome. The room was very clean. No complaints about it at all.
- Kimberly (4/5): - This property needs some TLC. It's run down and out of date. The A/C was broken in my room. They had a mobile air conditioner placed in, but it was barely working. It would run for a few minutes then switch off. Each time it cycled, it shook the bed.
- Michael (10/5): - Very nice little motel. I am in Defiance once a month for 3 days . Wish I would have know about this motel many months ago. I will most definitely be makeing this Motel my go to instead of the Holliday Inn. Very nice staff and grounds. Room for a big truck to park and a nice pool.
- CHRIS (6/5): It'll do for a night - Quick, last minute stop. Large puddle outside room, not much for lighting, TV had no inputs. Bed was great, as was rate. Friendly greeting at late hour.
- Mark (8/5): - Price
- Jeremy (10/5): - Wonderful!
- Joanne (8/5): - The indoor pool was nice. They had a pingpong table and large indoor area to sit in. Staff was amazing and nice. Our room was clean, but it has the odor of a dog.
- Holly (6/5): Sunset - Beds were comfortable, but the door didn't seal fully. my daughter got bitten by bugs.
- Kate (10/5): - Very accommodating and efficient. Thank you!
- Kate (10/5): - It’s great.
- FredBueno (8/5): You're going to need a sleeping mask - This is one of those old motels from the golden age of roadside America striving to survive. I have a thing for this kind of place, where you park right in front of your room plus I give them props for the effort.
The room is small but includes the basic amenities; a microwave and a mini fridge plus a not big but acceptable TV. The decoration is kind of suiting for this type of place and the bed was comfortable.
The road noise was way less noticeable than I expected but there were two problems that annoyed me:
They’ve installed LED lights (strong ones) around the entire complex (security thing?) and that doesn’t go well with the curtains of the room because they’re those old style ones with a HUGE gap between the rod and the window. Therefore, you’ll have to sleep through an all night “sunlight” entering your room from the top of the drapes.
The second problem is something that happens in many places; there was no hot water after 9 A.M., so I had to skip shower and have it at my next destination.
- Holly (8/5): - I'll be honest. Sunset Motel is a very dated, humble place. It initially gives creepy vibes and little bit of anxiety. However, the people who run the motel are VERY kind and helpful, down to earth folks. Check-in was quick and easy. The rooms aren't frilly but the BEDS are possibly the most comfortable I've ever slept on. My kids enjoyed the swimming pool. My only true complaints: the shower head was really low on the wall- down to my chin and I'm not tall. The folks that stay here, possible all the time, hang out in the parking lot. Nothing crazy, just enjoying eachothers company with a few beers. I did have to ask them to keep it down, as they we're getting loud around 10:30pm. Overall: Was the affordable option in the area. We were visiting Chimney Rock and Carhenge and needed a place to rest before moving on to Mount Rushmore.
- Dewayne (8/5): - It was great
- K'Lynn (10/5): - Good
- kringekringle1 (10/5): Amazing stay warm and friendly staff! - I'm on my last full day staying here before leaving tomorrow morning but feel as if this place deserves a glowing review! I am in town for my friends wedding and they did their first looks here and they were the most accommodating, friendly people I've met staying anywhere. They let us all meet here with no issues and even helped! Not to mention I've locked myself out of my room a couple times and they have been super nice about it not scolding and actually joked with me about it making me feel less dumb for it. I hope this place finds all the success it deserves!
- christine (10/5): - Spacious and comfortable
- Jay (8/5): Comfortable with nice staff after a long day. - Nice staff that helped when tired with recommendations. Simple room with firm, but comfortable bed. No real extras in the room, but car right out the front door for easy unloading and loading of 2 bikes for text day. Very small bathroom with stained tub that wife didn’t want to use. Had an indoor pool with a large kids pool party going on. Out for Mexican food dinner and too tired to think about relaxation in a pool. Accommodating staff. RV setups in rear of hotel too.
- Dawnna (10/5): - It's an older property so if you're expecting modern and updated not for you. But very clean super nice staff.
- Kelly (10/5): - Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would stay here again and recommend to friends.
- Hal (4/5): - No wifi instructions, password not written on paper or mentioned. Carpets are beyond filthy
- Laura (10/5): - This is an older motel, but kept up well. There is a laundry for guests, the staff were excellent and very helpful. Nice place to stay and good price. I would atay here again if I'm ecer in the area.
- Neil (8/5): - Clean and well priced. Friendly check in.
- Tina (10/5): You won't find better for this price! - This place is excellent for the money! For $55 I got a comfortable bed with a separate sitting area. The air conditioner didn't work great, but if I would have asked I am confident they would have moved me to a different room or fixed it. The service was excellent. I was comfortable, I saved a lot of money, and I slept well.
- Christian (8/5): - The bathroom shower head did not have a way to turn on. Had to use the facet head to shower. Made it very difficult and an inconvenience.
- Keith (10/5): - The Sunset Motel is a good, quiet, economical motel. It is a little older, but everything works like it should. A common difficulty with older motels is whether you have to hunt for outlets to recharge/use the laptop, phones, etc. Not so with this place - they have a few convenient places on the night stand, or reachable outlets by the desk. The bed was comfortable and seemed new.
- JUSTIN (10/5): - Closet spot to stay near local drive in movie theater
- ontheflight (10/5): If you pass through Alliance, you have to stay here! - Pride of ownership is obvious in this place! I was very impressed. A little worried on drive up but pleasantly surprised in the room. Owners have done a very nice remodel job. The bed was sooooo comfortable and the place was very clean. This is a great value for the money. I would stay here again.
- Christopher (10/5): - This is an old fashioned "motel", however one could stay at the Holiday Inn down the street for twice the price and have the exact same amenities.
- Michelle (4/5): - We stayed here because it had 3 10/10 reviews in the last 2 weeks and one 7/10. However, I’d give it maybe 4/10. Property is run down. Bolt on door didn’t work - it didn’t line up with the slot in the door frame and was extremely stiff to turn. Window didn’t latch, but may have been painted closed. One of the beds needed to be replaced - it sagged terribly, while the other seemed ok. The bed skirt on the good bed was torn. There seemed to be some kind of issue with the power outlets. The one between the beds had a very nice power strip plugged into it, but the strip only had power if we jiggled the plug. Another outlet would power a lamp, but wouldn’t charge devices. Possibly brown-out voltage? I don’t know. The bathtub needs to be replaced. The towels are so old I couldn’t tell if they were clean. There were a LOT of flies, but there was also a swatter, which came in handy. The STAFF WAS EXCELLENT. Very friendly and helpful both at check in and the next day when we were leaving.
- Wendy (10/5): - A bit more light around the exterior of the office for arriving at night
- Debra (10/5): - Perfect place for me and the dogs to spend a night on our travels. Clean quiet and plenty of room!
- JayLynn (8/5): - Clean and updated, comfortable bed, fluffy towels, friendly staff.
- bobbie (10/5): Little treasure off the beaten path - Highly recommend Sunset Motel. Friendly staff, awesome room, bed was amazing and room very clean. Will definitely be back. Price was right.
- Tom (8/5): - Rooms were very clean and bed was excellent!
- Robert (10/5): - Older Motel but kept up, clean and was a great price.
- Lucas (10/5): - A nice little hotel for a great price. Theres no reason you should pay 80-100 dollars a night for another hotel when the sunset offers the same rooms and amenities for much less. Love the staff, and the way the business is conducted. Nice little place.
- David (4/5): - The ac/heat didnt work. The peephole had no lens, you could look right into the room. Left after noticing multiple red bite marks on my leg
- Christine (8/5): - Large comfy beds and room. Staff was friendly and even offered to open the pool back up for my kiddos. Could use some updating, but met our needs for one night.
- Margaret (10/5): - The staff was not only welcoming but really understanding of my needs that went beyond just greeting. Made me feel valued and appreciated. It was a real hometown feeling, with none of the sterile corporate being only a number one gets from stays in big box motels!
- Audrey (8/5): - I like this place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room is super cute with a little seating area. The pool was nice and warm and big. Guest laundry was nice, and inexpensive. No complaints.
- Wanda (10/5): - Room needs more lighting. Very clean and friendly staff convenient parking
- Jerry (10/5): - Price was good and rooms are clean and comfy.
- E Carmen (8/5): - The front desk clerk was accommodating and helpful. Two beds were requested and that request was fulfilled. The room was spacious, and internet services good. However, lighting options were limited (no overhead). Finally, additional bath towels were requested in advance. These were not provided until requested again; and bath towels that were initially provided were scarcely enough for one adult much less two.
- Elaine (8/5): - Friendly. Quiet.
- Da (8/5): - The property is dated but staff and bed were great. It had the feel of an old road side motel.
- Warpheus (8/5): New Owners add sparkle to my Go-To Alliance motel - Since 2019 I typically spend 4 nights in the Alliance area for leisure and have routinely used the Sunset Motel for my stay. The property boasts an indoor pool that is attractive to the motel's guests. Ownership transferred in 2021 or 22 to a local family who have made steady investments in the rooms, Wi-Fi infrastructure and the recreation areas. The property does show its age but the staff strives to provide excellent service and the cleanliness of the rooms is very good.
Each room has a flat screen HDTV and the channel selection includes a variety of premium movie channels. There are laundry facilities on-site as well as busy little ice making machine.
If this motel were located in Omaha, Lincoln or even Scottsbluff I would recommend staying at a national chain property. But this is Alliance Nebraska with a population steadily declining from around 8,000. Choices here, whether it be dining, shopping or accommodations, are limited. In this locale, the Sunset Motel (and attached RV Park) provides clean and adequate facilities that are a good value for the money.
- Renars (10/5): - The room I was in was bigger than I expected from that price. Price was reasonable and the staff was amazing. The ladies working there - April and Jackie were super forthcoming and helped any time I needed something.
They even have a pool there which they can open it for you in minutes. For a cheap stay for a couple of days - it was perfect!
- Ivor (10/5): - I always try to use smaller private establishments (as opposed to big chains). Sometimes that works out well, sometimes less so. On this occasion, I struck gold.
The people running this motel have only been here but a short while but they are really friendly, lovely people and they deserve to make a success of their venture.
Go on, support them by staying here.
You won't regret it.
August 2023
- Jodi (8/5): - Our room was clean and comfortable. The hotel could use some paint on the outside and some weeds pulled, but the staff was helpful and courteous.
- Tim (10/5): - Very friendly place!
- Maja (10/5): - Staff was very kind. They had a pool, that looked closed, but they opened it for us, since our children were very excited to have some water fun. Everything was pretty near the property - the supermarket, the dining options.
The place did look a bit outdated, it would for example need some new towels, since the ones we got seemed very worn out.
All in all we had a good stay here
- Glenn (2/5): - The bathtub was stained and the shower curtain was stained and dirty. We discovered tgat under the one bed it was dirty and there was a water bottle that wss partially drank and a beer cap so the floor hadnt been cleaned. There were tons of flies when we entered the room. And they seemed to just keep appearing. The sink faucets do not work properly. It was just all very nasty!
- Alejandra (10/5): - Very comfortable stay! Staff is friendly and welcoming and the room was clean.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Great staff, but the room smelled like a kennel. Complete with old dry dog food along the wall on the carpet. Nasty
- Felicia (10/5): - Me and my family's stay was very nice. The front desk lady who checked us in was very helpful and kind. Our room was spacious and comfortable. I really liked that they themed the room, it made it feel very unique from other places I've stayed, very cute. The kids had a blast in the pool and they even provided life jackets and pool toys. Over all the new owners and management is doing a fantastic job and i would definitely stay again!
- Gilbert (8/5): - It was quit and relaxing
- Thomas (4/5): - Generally an OK stay, until you leave something. They found one, but not the other - ? All we wanted was the pillow cover.
- Shaine (10/5): - The room was pleasant, and the bed was like a cloud. Best nights rest in ages. I arrived late, but the gentleman checking me in was very pleasant. I'll stay here again when I go back through Alliance. :)
- haelieghd2023 (10/5): One of the best motels I've been to. - Got the room as a made up Valentines day surprise. Front desk was very helpful. The room was gorgeous and very clean.the manager even let me stay later than check out. Pool was very nice. All out experience was amazing definitely will stay again.
- David (8/5): - Get what you pay for.
- Cheryl (4/5): - This place needs to be bulldozed to the ground. So old and dirty.
- Rylander (8/5): - Good but very small window and quite dark in the room
- Kenneth (4/5): - we stayed here several years ago and it was ok but not this time. i made the reservations based on previous stay but never again.
- David (8/5): - The young lady who checked me in was very helpful. The room was very comfortable. The overall outside appearance of the facility was pretty bad, but, the service and room was great. A reminder to not judge a book by its cover!
- Yunong (10/5): - There was no airport shuttle at 5am, so the master took me to the airport himself. And I forgot to return the room card back.
- Matthew (2/5): - When checking in, I was first given the key to a room that hadn't been cleaned. Then when I got to a room that was ready, I found that the window (on the ground floor) didn't lock. There was a microwave in the room, as advertised, but the plug didn't reach the wall where it was set in a cabinet, so I had to carry it across the room to use it. And the tub is stained pretty disturbingly. And other areas in the room are in pretty unsightly disrepair.
- Michael (10/5): - Property is dated but very clean. Very Basic room, but coffee maker, fridge, and microwave.
- Keith (10/5): - TV's are big. When a minor issue came up, they sorted it out quickly.
- Mary Ann (10/5): - The property owner was very personable and helpful! He even walks each quest to there room.
- Katrina (8/5): - I like that the rooms are ground level with parking right in front of your room. The gentleman who checked me in was very pleasant and helpful. The bed was very comfortable, I rested well!
I have no actual complaints, just odd observations. There was no coffee pot in the room but there were cups and the coffee packets (napkin, cream, sugar, sugar substitute and straw stirer). The inside of the microwave must have had a serious fire as it was really burned and the glass turntable was altogether missing but it did heat my tea water. The tv only had 1 channel but I didn't mind, I have tinnitus so it was for sound only.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Shady gacility. No one working front desk on arrival. Room in unsafe location. Electrical plugs dis not work. Air-conditioning off so 90 degrees in room. Never shut off until 1:30 am. Told to use back entrance but that had us parking in a trash dump. Around 1:30 am, someone rattled door handle! No ice machine. Frig was like an oven. Bed looked slept in. Do not go here!!! Should be banned.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was convenient and inexpensive, but it was very run down. I believe they tried to keep it clean, wouldn’t even use the shower. The pictures were deceiving
- Michelle (8/5): - This isn’t a fancy hotel, maybe a little run down looking even. However this hotel was absolutely spotless and had the best personalized service. We would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Cobwebs, flys and spiders in the room. Unsafe and dirty bathtub that would not drain. Broken glass in parking lot. Very rundown and should have the health inspector visit.
- Loralee (2/5): Disgusting! - This was the absolutely worst place I have ever stayed. First no coffee pot
I asked for one it was filthy.i had to clean it.microwave was not plugged in so we moved out to heat pizza
It didn't work. The bedspread was soiled. Threw that on the floor. No shampoo or soap. The hair dryer was broken.the curtains we barely hanging.the bathroom was so bad I barley used the toilet
Rusty gross Kleenex box. I have never been so disgusted.i want a full refund on that room
Do not stay there!
- Scott (4/5): - Everything was an extra charge. The washers and dryers didnt work at all
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Old property but clean, liked that there was an RV park on site so our friends with a camper stayed right there. Owner was friendly and even played volleyball with us.
- Kurtis (10/5): Summer Camp Stay - Service was midwestern friendly..an older place that is getting some updating..pool was a huge plus and Victor at front desk was awsome in accomodating my requests. I was only needing a place to sleep and shower..so was not looking for fancy and xpensive. Want to feel like you are a Queen or King, not your place..but if you are an outdoorsy person..it will do just fine.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Couldn't check in. Booking said check in time was until 5am. They sold our room to someone else at midnight and leaving us without a place to stay. Didn't get a room had to drive to chadron to find an open room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice
- Leonardo (8/5): Liked the room so much I slept in. - A clean room with a soft bed, it’s all I wanted and this motel had it.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We found bed bugs under the mattresses and had to leave to another hotel. Pretty sure the indoor pool has been closed for years. The entire place is in really poor condition.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The only light in the room was across the room, past the bed and a sharp-cornered coffee table (I have a long scratch and a bruise from that!) and the first night, the bulb was burned out. I had to use my cell phone to find my way to the lamp, then had to call the front desk. Instead of asking if anything else worked, the worker flipped the breaker, shutting everything off before checking the bulb! Also, the pool was out of service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice stay - The woman at the front desk was very kind.
Although the white sheets had stains on them still, we just used our own blankets.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Room was extremely dirty and the bathroom was disgusting. They also advertised a pool but it was drained.
- Gregory (6/5): - Motel is run down ! Toilet paper doesn’t have a place ! No tissue ,
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Dirty! Everything was dirty and smell bad. The property listed for sale and they don’t care about the maintenance for the building.
