Guest Reviews
- Jane (9/5): Great location, comfy room, unique historic hotel. - Great location I booked a room with a king bed through booking.com, but got a room with a queen bed. The host should correct booking.com.
- shira (10/5): - Lovely place
Clean very comfortable
The stuff is very thoughtful and helpful
Decently will be back
- Peter (8/5): Quiet charming place. - Did not do breakfast Didn't know how to work tv. Not a big deal for me. Otherwise great stay. Lots of character. I would stay here again.
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Shelley (8/5): - Nice stay. Our room was a bit noisy but wasn’t an issue when sleeping which was good.
- Julie (9/5): - The add was deceiving because it listed parking as included but way down in the fine print it said there was a fee. It should list parking available for a fee rather than included. Otherwise, the stay was great.
- Veronique (9/5): - Les clés n'étaient à l'endroit indiqué, cependant le personnel à l'acceuil a pu nous donner les clés rapidement ainsi que la vignette pour le stationnement.
- Wayne (9/5): - Comfort
- shira (10/5): -
- Stacey Nicole (9/5): Cute place. Super comfy - A little confusing to find the door but your staff helped.
- James (10/5): Relaxing, because I was provided with everything that I needed. - Everything!
- Shelley (8/5): -
- Angus (9/5): Great value stay in prime location. - Very convenient location in centre of St John. Plenty of room in the suite to have breakfast, unpack bags etc. Maybe we were being technical dunces, but we couldn’t get either TV to work.
Parking fee is additional.
- William (10/5): I very much appreciated the restoration of these historic buildings and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Highly recommended! - Well located, very clean, lots of character. Loved everything!
- John and Susan (10/5): Excelent location! Would definitely stay again. - The location and nice and updated. Attention to detail, excellent communication with management. There should be a grab bar next to the shower to help with getting in and out of the bathtub.
- Joseph (10/5): Great and comfortable stay close to many shops and restaurants! - Beautiful! Comfortable: great location (except for steps 😂but it was clear when we booked that there was no elevator. Great. Place. Highly recommend Steps
- Harold (9/5): Excellent - Excellent location, lovely room. Nothing
- Judy (8/5): -
- Candice (10/5): Historic building 5min walk from downtown. Beautiful clean room with micro-kitchen and jet bathtub. - I received clear host-less key retrieval instructions by email prior to my check-in It was unclear where to leave my keys upon my host-less checkout and the response to my inquiry about this came after I had already left the property
- Noble (10/5): -
- Miguel (8/5): -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Oksana (9/5): - All was awesome. VERY clean. A piece of a seaview was a pleasant bonus. Like, seriously, highly recommend 6 pillows for 2 people were a little bit too much lol. Joking. Nothing bad, really. Ah, air conditioner was pretty noisy. Check the parking though. We were covered, no complaints (thank you!). But if there were more guests with cars, I don't know how it would be
- Adam (10/5): - Had a great time and the accommodations were excellent. We hope to stay here again.
- Shannon (9/5): Excellent stay in Historic Saint John - Excellent proximity to everything you’d want to do while visiting Saint John. We walked everywhere except the Reversing Falls, and there is a bus stop nearby that takes you directly there. Really comfortable bed, and it was nice having a small sofa for relaxing a bit at the start and end of each day. The Sydney Street location is next to Kings Square, but that seemed to be a hub for small groups of homeless or drug-affected people. We didn’t have any problems or interactions with anyone but I’m mentioning it because it did make my son feel a little uneasy or unsafe, so we went out of our way to avoid that area when walking back to our hotel each night.
- francis (10/5): Bel endroit pour rayonner autour du centre ville - Equipement, proximité, propreté, service
- Doreen (9/5): I had a lovely weekend in historic Saint John and Chipman Hill Suites was the perfect location. - Very comfortable bed, the kitchenette was convenient and well equipped. Everything was great!
- Richard (9/5): Very good room, excellent location. - The room was great, very nicely appointed. The full kitchen was a great addition. There was free onsite laundry. Very walkable to downtown area. Staff we met was excellent. Enjoyed the jetted tub. The floor was not very clean when we arrived, but a quick chat and it was fixed up.
- James (10/5): Another great stay with everything that you need. - Everything was great, again! Nothing
- James (10/5): Great stay, again. We’re staying here again in August. - Everything about Chipman Hill Suites is what you want when you stay somewhere.
- Penelope (8/5): A good location for tourism. Convenient parking across street. - Good location for access to tourism area. No complaints.
- Marion (10/5): - Love this well run heritage accommodation.
- Gina (10/5): Fantastic accommodation! - This accommodation was unbelievable! The kitchen was very well equipped. Bedding and pillows were of high quality. Quiet and safe! Communication for check-in, parking and check-out was excellent!
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terri (8/5): - Very nice property. We had a small suite which was a bit cramped but it had everything we needed including coffee and a good coffee maker. Very clean. Centrally located near the harbour and excellent restaurants. The only downside was a noisy air conditioner but it was hot and needed. We would definitely stay again
- Anneke (10/5): - We found Chipman Hall to be such a cozy and charming historic space. The bedding was very comfortable and we had a restful sleep. The entire space had everything we needed with a little kitchenette and spot to relax.
Note to visitors, the lot behind the hotel is free on weekends after 6pm, as is the red rose lot nearby, as long as your vehicle is moved by noon, the following day.
We loved our stay and will definitely return!
- Kaplan (9/5): Superb -
- Heather (9/5): Beautiful place to stay. - Beautiful, unique old property with nice finishings, lots of room, great beds pillows and towels. Night lights are a great touch!
Loved being able to do our laundry. All the stairs was an issue for the two in our group who had the 3rd floor room to carry luggage to.
- Jameela (10/5): We have already recommended this property to a traveling friend. - Location, appointment, and the remarkable courtesy and professionalism of the staff. Nothing comes to mind.
- Karla (9/5): great one night stay - most comfortable bed!
- Miki (9/5): Superb -
- Rachelle (10/5): Best value for your money! - Amazing room! Clean, comfiest mattress ever, and a jacuzzi tub I did not expect! I loved it all
- Daniel (5/5): Very clean but way too uncomfortable due to the temperature in the room. - The cleanliness and location of the room was I enjoyed the most. The room, suite #5 was like sleeping in an oven. You couldn't open any windows either. Did not sleep much, too hot, dry and uncomfortable. The thermostat was set at its lowest temperature. I think this has been a problem in the past as well because there was a sign right beside the thermostat asking to "please do not turn off the thermostat off"
- Jennifer (10/5): - We had an amazing stay - couldnt have asked for anywhere better!
- Stephanie (10/5): First time stay in Saint John and at this hotel, both were great! - Great location if you have an event at the Canada games pool. It’s next door. The parking option was excellent and easy.
- Gaetan (10/5): Excellent stay - Liked everything about it and location was great for our trip. The property was excellent but the bed was a little to soft. Everything else was super.
- joan (10/5): - outside during the night can hear loud late night drinkers cursing and yelling every night till 2 am!
- Janet (9/5): worked perfectly for what we needed - good location/room/accessibility - room was lovely and vdery clean - loved the kitchen facilities even though we did not use them except for coffee
ALSO: Parking!!! There were a lot of emails going to me before we arrived. If I had been somewhere that did not have internet it may have been a problem - don't know how to solve that.
Emails were very clear and succinct
- Motoko (10/5): Charming Place - The staff at the suites communicated well with us prior to arrival. We didn’t expect anyone in the office because we arrived after office hours. Surprisingly the front desk person, Grace was there to help us check in and carry luggage to the second floor. Our room was clean, cozy and comfortable. There was kitchenette equipped with everything we needed. We appreciated that we had assigned parking spot behind the hotel. The only thing it got attention was inadequate lighting. The ceiling light was too bright and table area offered no light.
- Kathleen (10/5): - This was a nice stay. We loved having a full kitchen, and the bed was very comfortable. We were able to walk to nice restaurants.
- Ania (9/5): Superb -
- David (10/5): - It was really good very great place to stay. Lots to see nearby just a walk away markets and shops.
- Trace (9/5): Enjoy historic Uptown Saint John - The staff were very helpful guiding us by phone into our parking spot and into our room!
These suites have a great location at the top of the hill in Uptown Saint John, the historic centre of the city. We had a great time walking the neighborhood and luckily encountered the Sunday open-air market on Queen Square where we lunched on delicious Nigerian fish & plaintain.
- Ronald (10/5): - You can look at the area as run down and a little seedy, or as working class and a historical district with wonderful architecture. Comfortable accommodations, with plenty of email communication to let you know how to get in and out of the suites (there is no lobby for check in). I'd stay here again.
- Wesley (8/5): - The need to contact property in advance for parking could have been made a bit clearer.
- Betsy (8/5): Clean, nice location, very easy check-in. - Did not have the breakfast. Very hot and stuff hallway, and our room did not cool off despite the best efforts of a small window air conditioner. We suggest looking at ways to increase ventilation in both the hallways and the rooms.
- Bryan (8/5): Nice location to stay in Saint John, but be careful about what you reserve - Great location in downtown Saint John, near harbor, restaurants and historic sites. Well equipped room with mini-kitchen, small dining table, decent A/C. Bed pretty comfortable (if smaller than we expected). We reserved a room described as a "Superior King Suite" on the Booking reservation. However, when we arrived, our room had a queen sized bed, and was not a suite--actually was pretty tight space-wise around the bed (had to move a chair out & back to open the closet door). We talked to the office staff about this; at first they denied any issue, then said it must have been because the instant we reserved they must have had a big group do a reservation. At that point we couldn't switch rooms, but asked for a partial refund based on the room difference. After sending a follow-up email after we checked out, the manager did refund the charges for parking, which was perhaps around what the queen/king difference was. So they did try to make amends, which is commendable. But if I were to reserve again, I would double-check with Chipman Hill directly to ensure I was getting the room I was expecting.
- Richard (4/5): Okay. -
- Cyrus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Suite was everything and more than we expected, clean, excellent location and lots of amenities, will certainly book there again in the future Absolutely nothing...excellent value and quality
- Katherine (10/5): Excellent stay - Very nice room, big bed, stocked kitchenette. Close to Waterfront.
- West (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Clean and all the amenities
- Kendell (10/5): Exceptional - Everything good
- Sanja (10/5): Comfort plus character - Beautiful restoration of old buildings, comfy bed ! Washer/dryer free use was a nice touch !
- Kevin (10/5): - I encountered a bit of confusion in terms of finding the entrance in relation to parking, but one quick phone call settled everything. The front desk worker was very friendly and helpful. The bed was very comfortable and the room had everything a person would need. One suggestion: have a sheet in the closet for people that can’t sleep with a duvet or comforter in warm weather.
- Mark (8/5): - Everything was very good but need more detailed instructions for entry code. The code only works if you enter it slowly as a person working on next building was able to help me get in
- Deborah (10/5): Beautiful historic building in a great location of St John - Beautiful property within walking distance to everything. A little hard holding doors while getting in the front two locked doors with luggage other than that it was perfect.
- Penny (10/5): - Beautiful little spot. Very comfortable. Check-in and check-out was really easy.
- James (8/5): parking big pickups in back and travel woes with luggage - breakfast wasn’t applicable, chats, super friendly Hand written welcome’s were great and found my missing valuables after behind the drapes mentioned a big prayer for staff were sympathetic listening I misplaced WW1 military accoutrements now Australia bound. All good thanks for the stay. Wanted hot bath water arrived later afternoon-wanted warm welcome cookies and hot tea turn a cold afternoon warmer. Too lazy for the coffee maker.
- Laurie (6/5): - It was fantastic - aside from my room being beside laundry - great location!
- Gilbert (10/5): - Very nice room
- Susan (8/5): Very good -
- Janelle (10/5): Beautiful and comfortable! - Beautiful heritage details with all the comforts and a better value than most hotels nearby. We will definitely be back!
- John (7/5): Questionable first impression improves significantly with time. - Large spacious rooms with full kitchen and sofa. Bathroom very clean and functional for tight space. The overall area was pretty run down, but the location within the area was great. Parking spaces were too tight. Bar height table and chairs were not comfortable. The steps up into the foyer and the shallow stairs at the second level turn. Challenging environment for anyone with mobility issues.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Benjamin (9/5): A unique stay in a historic property - Clean, comfortable, spacious room. Perfect location close to everything in Saint John. Great service tracking us down after we accidentally left a bag in the room. Chipman Hill is saving old buildings throughout Saint John, so staying here helps support historic preservation.
- Ilan (5/5): I won’t recommend this place - Not much unfortunately Normally I don’t like to leave bad reviews that could impact people’s business but I totally don’t get the good reviews. Maybe we happened to get the worse suits but - no elevator, the smallest ac that didn’t make any impact and the room was warm, no screens so we couldn’t open the one window we had, furnitures were outdated and seems dirty, bed was too soft, the cheapest toilet paper (we paid for our own one), no coffee shop or any breakfast place in the area, and I can keep going…
- Diana (8/5): Very good -
- Jeffrey (10/5): Fabulous room! - Lovely suite room located in a beautiful old building in Saint John. Fabulously appointed and in a great location. In particular, it has everything needed to cook a small meal in your room. Highly recommend.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Raine (8/5): Very good - The kitchenette was helpful. Couldn’t get the air conditioner to cool the room.
- Jim (10/5): couldn't have asked for a better set up and comfortable room - Very comfortable bed and clean rooms .. It was nice for 2 nights but long term it would be excellent as all self contained. Received a email the day after checking in to make sure i had everything i needed. Nice and friendly people to deal with Parking was close but no option to park car at facility for short term when unloading and loading luggage. Also needed to come back to facility to drop off parking pass after check out
- Patricia (9/5): Superb -
- Ratkovich (8/5): Awesome Historic Place to Stay. - Great location, and a nice room. Clean and comfortable. After booking, I was informed there was no public parking, and if I wanted to park behind the Inn, I would need to pay $10 a night extra. The money is not a big deal, but at $200 a night, I would think that would be included. We had a little trouble finding the room, mostly my fault in not reading the lenghty message I was sent with instructions. The TV volume didn't work with either remote, and the generic instructions did not match our room. Lastly, our room did not have a coffee maker, just a hot pot for water. There were filters and coffee but no actual maker. The office hours are 9am - 6pm, so there is no help unless there are emergencies.
I would still recommend Chipman Hill Suites as the history and location far outway any of our inconveniences.
Thanks.
- Patricia (10/5): Comfortable, Historic property in a good location! - Very comfortable, quiet space with a well appointed kitchenette and access to a washer and dryer. Good location to some sites and good restaurants. There is also a Mall and a Fresh Market close by. The employees on premise were very helpful if needed, especially with directions!!
- Dianne (8/5): - Very clean and super comfy bed.
- Nick (9/5): Superb -
- Manon (10/5): - Everything was great although having an extra blanket would've been nice.

- John W. (10/5): - Loved the vintage decor and very helpful staff!
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional - lovely group of suites
exceptionally welcoming staff- from those we met in the parking lot to the inside staff
- Guy (9/5): Maritime Holiday - Really liked our room. The bed was so comfy and the washroom was roomy. The location is on a very busy street so it was a bit noisy. Thank goodness we packed a white noise machine!
- Geir (10/5): Nice apartments in historical buildings. - Wonderful aparthotel in historical buildings - bang in the city centre. Everything was swell, really.
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paula (9/5): enjoyed our brief stay. - nice location, very pretty. private parking. small room, had trouble moving around with suitcases.
