Guest Reviews
- Tad (10/5): - Amazing Stay at UNPLAN Kagurazaka – A Hidden Gem in Tokyo! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The location is fantastic. Kagurazaka is a charming neighborhood with a unique mix of traditional and modern vibes. It's quiet, safe, and full of great little cafés, restaurants, and hidden alleys to explore. Plus, it's well-connected to major metro lines, so getting around the city was super convenient.
The common room upstairs is quite small and gets crowded quickly, especially when everyone is making dinner or having a few drinks before heading out.
- George (10/5): Amazing area! - Great area away from tourist bs and a great price!!
- Kuan Hsun (10/5): - Excellent for my 3 days of stay. It is my first experience of staying at capsule hotel in Japan. I would like to stay here again for my next trip to Tokyo!
- Ryan (10/5): - Stayed here twice and had a great time both times. The area is nice and the staff was extremely helpful and keeps the place very clean. Didn't try the in house restaurant, but the dessert/parfait operation they run at nice had some really delicious desserts and drinks.
My only complaint is the hostel's towels are very thin and you're only allowed one for the stay. Additional towels are available for rent for ¥200 for the stay, but if you have a lot of hair (or are very accustomed to more plush towels) you may want to bring your own. I will be doing that next time and would definitely stay here again!
- Muhit (8/5): Solid hostel, good value. - Nice, cozy place. The free breakfast of bagels and granola Lia juice, coffee, etc. was a bonus. Friendly, competent staff always busy keeping the place clean. Located three minutes from the Kazurazaka stations Gate 2 in a nice residential neighborhood. Practically next to a FamilyMart with. 7-Eleven also nearby (next to the station), you can get a wide variety of microwaveable and other food nearby to heat up and eat in the small “common room”. Lots and lots of restaurants (hundreds, it seems) are nearby. The lunch sets at nearby Kyourakutei are seriously good. The place used to have Michelin star until recently. Where else can you get lunch like that for $20-30?
- Victoria (10/5): - second time. still loved it.
- Victoria (10/5): - The location is amazing. The room had all I was looking for and all the guests I shared the room with were nice and respectful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Bae Gon (10/5): -
- Jonathan (10/5): Brand new, model hostel in central Tokyo - An amazing deal, with the big bed and a lot of the perks of a full-fledged capsule hotel for the price of a hostel. Everthing is as clean and well-kept as a hotel too--absolutely no hairs in the bedsheets or any of that nonsense. Hostel rules still apply though; towels are rental, for example, and the front desk will close at 11 PM or so. They even serve free toast and hard-boiled eggs + one drink for breakfast!
Note that while close to the station, the paths are rather narrow, and it's a metro station with only stairs. Take care with the luggage you bring.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I can feel comfort although come alone.
Near metro station, 7-11, family mart
Good place
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hostel was a bit too expensive for what it was worth. With a bit more cash per day you can get a hotel that will include all amenities that this hostel can't offer (which is none, because it's a hostel)
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The bathrooms were really well appointed; the beds were comfortable; and the pods were a good size. :) They also allowed early check-in which was really helpful. They had a list of events happening around Tokyo for those who don't have a fully packed itinerary, which made for spontaneous fun.
Sound management is a bit difficult, as the pods have some open space between them (above the dividers); but I suppose it is to be expected with the type of property. Some information on the train station exit would have been great also (especially if there is an elevator option).
Overall, a great experience. :)
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was my first time staying in a Hostel and im glad it was at UNPLAN. Front of staff was friendly and helpful. Overall amenities and cleanliness were superb!
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Zoe (10/5): - I would highly recommend this hostel; the staff are so friendly and easy-going, the bed area is spacious and the shared bathroom is huge. The local area is also pleasant and is easy to transport to-and-from the major attractions within Tokyo. Would come again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Helt grei, rent, hyggelig betjening😉 nære mat butikk og undergrunnen
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is a very nice property with friendly staff in a safe neighborhood.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - 3
But I didn’t like the curtains are short and the sun and the light which you can not turn off bothered me.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- David (10/5): Three bedded room in clean and friendly hostel - Clean, comfortable and friendly hostel in a fairly convenient location for exploring Tokyo.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Clean & convenient - My friends and i stayed in a room for 4ppl! It was just right and so clean! The hostel was close to the station so that was really convenient as well! Service was great and everyone was really nice!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great stay. Great staff. Short walk from the station
- Verified traveler (6/5): MEH - The hostel bedrooms stink like old cheese, in a bad way. Overzealous staff, poor breakfast options. Good area though. 2/5 stars, would not return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice and clean with very friendly and helpful staff but you hear everything your neighbors do in their bunk
- Evan (10/5): - Friendly staffs, great group activities, clean facilities. One of the best hostels that I’ve stayed at.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing place to stay! A must for any visitor to Japan!
- Sebby (10/5): - Staff is really nice and friendly, and they can help you if you need. I only really asked something once because I'm already used to tokyo, but others have asked for help. The only downside, is that there are no lockers. But I didnt have a wheel luggage, just a big 40L trek bag so I kept it with me in my “Bed-cube”. But most people had it outside of their bed and I haven't heard anyone getting anything stolen. They also have like a handy phone thingy that has access to maps and routes, so you can take with you while you stay there and not get lost. I didn't really use it, just tried it in my bed cz I had a data plan on my phone.
- Olamide (10/5): Highly Recommend this place for solo travellers! - Unplan Kagurazaka
+
* Close to metro
* Amazing staff
* Tasty breakfast
* Phone they give is a great help
* Great atmosphere
-
* Lack of space for luggage in dorm
* One guest allegedly stole another guests property so I felt the constant need to check my stuff
- Richard (10/5): - Love the place and the location. I would definitely come back
- Palaks (4/5): no lights in each bunk - Each customers has their own purpose to stay. Other customers need to read something before they sleep but the lights in the room are off at 10pm. How could they read or even check their own schedule or plan for the next day. In other capsule inn like this, its bunk has and all the customers have their own privacy.
Breakfast is I guess too stingy in a way. You should at least add green in it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Can't believe how comfortable my stay was considering the rates! Great value!
- Jeff (8/5): Clean, comfortable hostel - I booked one night to test Unplan hostel out, it was great. Affordable price, clean and safe hostel. The staff are gems, Peter was so helpful with all sorts of info for my stay and travel.
Mini breakfast included, if you're an average eater you'll want to supplement the breakfast they serve.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Stay! - It was a short stay but a great stay. We booked a private room with a bathroom, and it was actually very large for a room in Japan. The room was clean, and while minimalist, very functional. The bed was comfortable, the heat worked, and the bathroom was great too. It even had a small balcony, but it was too cold to spend time on it, but it would be nice in warmer months. The wifi worked during our stay. The breakfast was small/limited, but I don't really want more than toast, oj, and a coffee (I drink lattes, so I purchased one from the onsite cafe/bar). The welcome was friendly and organized, and the check-out was quick and easy too. The area has a metro about 5 minutes walk away, and many restaurants and cafes, but where the hotel is located is very quiet so that was nice. I recommend staying here for a visit to Tokyo.
- m (10/5): Really cool hostelm - I highly recommend this hostel. The Staff was so nice.
- Kenneth (10/5): highly recommended - Genuinely one of the most pleasant hostels I have stayed in. Staff very accommodating and location is good too.
- Verified traveler (10/5): THE best! A hostel nicer than most hotels. - I had originally booked just a couple nights here, and ended up staying almost two weeks. Wonderful, clean, new and fresh. Spacious sleeping bunks with thick, comfy and supportive foam mattresses. Best beds I slept on over a month of traveling in Japan. Really friendly and helpful staff. Excellent cafe/bar on bottom floor, fun hip vibe, even people from the neighborhood spend time there not just hostel guests. The Kagurazaka neighborhood is an excellent hideaway, quiet residential neighbourhood just minutes by subway from all the biggest and best locations in Tokyo. Showers and a huge bathtub, clean bathrooms, laundry, common room with refrigerator, rooftop patio, cool events, everything a traveler could want.
This was the nicest stay of my whole trip, including a number of private hotel rooms that cost considerably more. If you want better than this, you want a luxury hotel suite, and you'll pay 20x as much for it. Take a leap and stay here, you will love it!
- Jennifer (10/5): - The staff was so incredibly nice and helpful every single day.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Awesome hostel - If all hostels were like this I'd be staying at them all the time!
Staff is very friendly, they seem to hire a good mix of expacts that can speak multiple languages. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Each bed space has it's own curtain for privacy.
Common areas are clean as well!
- Katja (10/5): I'd come again - My main concern was if I'd be able to sleep through the night as, you might know, some hostels are quite loud. And I'm a light sleeper. I had no issues here, the guests were all quiet in the sleeping areas, although some forgot the entrance code which caused the alarm to go off (not that much noise).
The hostel is very clean and very modern, beds are super comfy and the overall size of the "cabin" is good. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the only thing I can "complain" about is the breakfast which is small (toast and egg) and only offers ONE drink.
I would definitely stay again :)
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hostel - This was a great place to stay. Staff were very friendly and the facilities were great.
- Maria (10/5): So Nice!!! - We had a wonderful stay at the Unplan. We booked the private family room, but had access to the entire hostel. Everyone was so helpful, and there was nothing that we lacked during our entire stay!! You can't go wrong at the Unplan😊
- Ashley (8/5): Clean & nice ambience - Near to a subway station (5min walk), friendly staff, quick check in and comfy bed. Had a lovely breakfast at well designed lobby, or you can enjoy at their rooftop! Overall amazing stay and will come back again on next visit!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice and comfortable hostel - The matress is very comfortable. You can close the blinds so that no sun can filter through. The shower is big and clean at all time.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The best - This is the best hostel I ever stay in my life, the staffs were nice, the room was nice. I found out on my third night that they got a bath tub in the shared bathroom, it's coooool!!!!
- Walter (10/5): Cross between capsule and hostel - Nice little hostel tucked into a local neighborhood. Close to transport and within walking distance to a few parks and sights
- abner (4/5): - Not recommended for 4 people in one room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hostel was in a great location, close to the subway.
The staff were very friendly and were always more than happy to help with any questions I had.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean - Super clean and friendly knowledgeable staff
- brian (10/5): Very nice for single traveler! - Only the lounge was closed a bit too early to me and a group of roommates was too noisy. Other things are perfect. My room and bed were clean, facilities were new, bathroom and toilet were clean too.
- Petra (10/5): Unexpectedly serene and modern - The hostel is very new and in a good way. The staff is young and seem ready to take the extra time to make your stay more comfortable (although I had no complaints). I was pleasantly surprised to find out there was free breakfast - just make sure you get to it before they run out of bread! (Go by 9.15 at the latest) The beds themselves are decent as can be. There was extra room in the back of the beds for additional luggage space, but not for bulky bags (carry-on sized bag in wheels was fine). Had my own towel, used their shampoo, conditioner and body soap, which turned out to not only smell like juicy blood orange, it also wasn't too bad for my long, dry European hair. Great coffee by the way, I plan to go again.
- Mochi (10/5): Convenient and clean hostel with nice staff - This is a great hostel. My room of 14 (7 bunk beds) was very comfortable, and fairly spacious. During the 5 nights I stayed here in mid October, the most number of people that occupied the room was 7 or 8, and a few nights there was only 3 or 4. There was no luggage lining the walkway to the beds, just a few at the very end of the room, farthest away from the entrance. The room has a connecting door with two showers. The showers take around 5 minutes for the water to get hot, and doesn't change temperature easily, turning the handle a little towards the cooler side or hotter side does nothing. The toilets are not in the room, they are on the same floor though. The room requires a passcode to get in, and each bed has a small reading light and small storage compartment, as well as curtains.
The staff is great, and all can speak English with no problems. They are very helpful, you just have to know where you want to go. They can store your luggage for the day when you check out.
The lounge area is nice, has a trendy cafe vibe, and allows people that don't stay in the hostel to get food and coffee and alcohol. However, as another reviewer stated, don't expect to make friends easily. Everyone just kind of does their own thing in the lounge, looking at their phone or reading. Breakfast is not included, but you can buy it like you would at a cafe. They make a nice and pretty flat white and mocha.
The area is residential. There's a FamilyMart on the street.
- ms. chan (8/5): Walkable distance to metro station - This is the excellent hostel I have been stay.
Walkable distance to station, great staff with very good English speaking. One of the staff can even speak mandarin which is a plus for Asian tourists. The command area in the ground floor is cozy, spacious. A convenient store is just next to the hostel, so I can buy some snake there.
Overall i think it is amazing with this budget!
- TASUKU (10/5): Reasonable clean hostel for foreigners - The room, bathroom and shower room were clean and modern.
I recommend that you bring your eye mask, earplug, and towels to sleep well and take a bath. They sell them at the front desk.
The front staffs can speak English well, so you can consult everything about your stay. Some cheap hotels or hostels in Japan don't have a staff who can speak English well, but you have no worries in this hostel.
- Alex (8/5): - We stayed in a private family room with four beds. The design of the hotel is nicee and quality of service is also good, with lots of English-speaking staff available for travelers who don't speak Japanese. The hotel is located in a residential neighborhood, so be mindful and don't make too much noise at night, but it is located close to a subway station and you access most major tourists sites within 20 minutes.
- CM (8/5): Beautiful facilities - Great facilities, in a quiet neighbourhood. Very close to metro - so easy enough to get to where you need to in Tokyo.
It's quite new so a few teething issues, some staff weren't the most helpful I've come across - but others were very friendly and helpful - though improvements could be made in terms of service - E.g. Calling a cab not just pointing you to the road. Or when you ask for a restaurant recommendation - not just telling you (at 8pm) they all closed, but you should find some open if you try. Fortunately I just went wandering and found they weren't actually all closed.
Also try to avoid staying on the third floor - the shared common room there can have noisy guests talking through till early hours which can be a bit disruptive.
But, despite the teething issues, which should only improve as the staff get more experience it was a good place to stay and the facilities were great. The small annoyances are only part and parcel of travelling any way and can be easily put up with for a few days.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Newly built Youth Hostel and Hotel combo - The hotel is clearly aimed at foreigner tourists just looking for a place to lay their head for a few hours, staff speak near perfect English and communication of your needs is a breeze. General information is provided in good English.

- Anlian (8/5): Nice stay! - The design of the hostel is great. It's also neat and clean. Close to subway. However not much night life. But if I ever visit Tokyo solo again, I will come back to UNPLAN.
