Guest Reviews
- Dawn (9/5): Perfect place to stay for a visit to the lovely market town of Helmsley. - Lovely room in the centre of Helmsley. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Excellent choice for breakfast. Some of the common areas weren’t as smart as the bedroom.
- Philip (9/5): -
- Ben (10/5): Great stay at a friendly, quality hotel in the heart of Helmsley. - Everything! The building, staff, location, room I stayed in, food - it was all really nice. The town is very nice too. Nothing.
- Tim (7/5): Nearly all good... - Lots of character, staff helpful and friendly and great location! Shame about the horrible over-sized TV in the bar.
- Helen (8/5): - Good central location, good breakfast choice, very pleasant staff. Room was smaller than expected for a Superior Double. Parking was tricky, as only 5 spaces in hotel car park behind hotel; alternative was paid public parking in square outside hotel, which was free overnight but would require feeding every two hours at other times. Reception staff helpfully told us of some free parking not too far away which we were lucky to be able to use over our 2 night stay.
- Steven (9/5): -
- Barbara (9/5): - Fantastic location. Nice size room. Helpful friendly staff. Parking available
- John (9/5): -
- Olivia (10/5): -
- Ruth (9/5): Lovely hotel and great value for money. Delicious breakfast - Friendly staff and great location Some corridors smelt unpleasant. Cold bathroom (towel rail off despite unseasonably cold weather)
- roy (10/5): -
- David (10/5): - Everything was great.
- Bridie (7/5): -
- Alan (8/5): Well satisfied - Good location and atmosphere. Nothing to dislike
- Alison (9/5): Lovely hotel in perfect location would recommend - The hotel is in an excellent location. Our room exceeded our expectations it was very large, beautifully done out and comfortable with a sofa in the room and classical music quietly playing when we arrived. There was a good choice of hot drinks in the room. The bed was comfortable and bathroom also very nice. We had a very good meal in the restaurant and the head receptionist greeted us very warmly. We were room only but there was a bakery Auntie Annie's across the road which did excellent breakfast sandwiches. In terms of people and traffic it was a nice quiet room (we had requested a quiet room if possible). The only down side was there was a loud boiler/air con unit or something right next to or behind our room (that could be heard even with earplugs). This provided some sleep disturbance but the room overall was so good that it didnt spoil our stay.
- Alison (8/5): - Friendly staff and excellent meals and comfy beds.Good central location. Unpleasant damp smell in one of the bathrooms.
- Andrew (9/5): Tidy room - Room not near pub Nothing
- Walter (8/5): - The friendliness of the staff, particularly Keith who was outstanding. N/A
- Philip (10/5): - 0
- Newbold (9/5): excellent hotel shall stay there again - my wife and i liked every thing about the hotel the staff were helpful and always happy to help you in any way.
the bedroom room had every thing you needed in it the bed excellent the room very clean and tidy
the dinner at night was one of the best i have had in a hotel for along time and the breakfast was very good to . the only thing that could have been better is the car park is very limited in space i had park on the main road just around the corner from the hotel
- Andre (8/5): quite a pleasant stay bar prices very expensive - Room small but clean had all the facility's required for the price quite abdicate
- Tracy (8/5): Wonderful location, comfortable room and friendly staff - The room was comfortable Bit noisy outside
- Tracy (5/5): Tired and noisy - The feathers is set in a beautiful location a lovely building but a little tired inside. Breakfast was lovely plenty of choice and the staff were helpful and pleasant. We were upgraded to a room that was unfortunately a disappointment. It looked out onto a set of six industrial bins at the back of the property, very noisy extractor fans, staff taking breaks outside the room on the ground floor, large door slamming all the time. Such a shame.
- Terry (7/5): Not be stopping again - Nice to have parking I had real problems with the booking of this place, as I had a mystery payment come out of my bank account to a THE GOLDEN FLEECE HOTEL, I challenged this with my bank who then put a hold on my card which i couldn’t use then and they said they’d post a new one out to me, I then dig some digging myself then and found that THE GOLDEN FLEECE HOTEL were taking payments for this hotel and they shouldn’t have done it, I rang up my bank explained what had happened and they said they’d post a un freeze it but when I tried to use it they hadn’t so back on the phone and after a lot of hassle I sorted it all out. we had breakfast at the hotel the buffet selection was nice, but the so called cooked breakfast wasn’t cooked very well with the bacon on both occasions served raw, mentioned this to the male waiter that it was only been cooked on one side who just shrugged his shoulders and said cleverly I don’t know I didn’t watch him cook it, well I didn’t but it was not cooked. I never had a dinner in the hotel and glad I didn’t because if the chef can’t cook a couple of rashers of bacon, god help him with anything else.
On the last night of our stay we could here music coming from somewhere within the hotel all through the night we think it was one of the radios which they leave on for the arrival of guests but left it on throughout of the night.
- Julie (9/5): Great stay in a lovely friendly hotel - Location of the hotel was perfect. Room was excellent, tea & coffee making facilities, comfy bed & a great bathroom. Everything was very clean.
Delicious breakfasts with plenty of choices. Very friendly & helpful staff. Will definitely return. Parking is difficult on site as there are not many spaces but there is on street parking available.
- Ian (3/5): Location and staff great, however property disappointing - Location Room in need of refurbishment, worn out mattress and black mould in the shower.
Property in need of refurbishment.
- Jan (10/5): It was perfect for me. - Everything was lovely Nothing
- James (9/5): - Room breakfast and staff great, Range of blended whisky. There aren't any.
- Carolyn (8/5): - Very comfy room, clean, well thought out. Fantastic mouseman furniture in the pub. Nice food. Excellent barman The staff in the evening in the restaurant, weren't on the ball, slow to serve and remember part of the order. Check in was very scripted, impersonal. It felt a bit like give us your money and... go...
- Mark (8/5): -
- Johnson (10/5): Perfect - Brilliant staff. Fantastic food and a really good night’s sleep in a comfy bed and quiet room. Nothing
- Steven (9/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): Good - Location great Room very warm throughout the night and no way of regulating the temperature in our room made it an uncomfortable night sleep also room window looking out to bin area not the best
- Roberts (10/5): Great and pub had great food and friendly service. - Centre of town. Quiet at night. Nespresso Coffee machine in room. Bath. Had to have bath as had to duck a bit to have shower. (I am tall)
- Steven (8/5): -
- Kay (10/5): -
- Catherine (8/5): -
- Sally (10/5): Excellent stay - We were three couples doing the Inn Way ( circular walk) so we started and finished at the Feathers. The hotel kindly kept our motorbike for the week. We had stayed the week earlier at the start of our walk and had smallish but comfortable rooms, but the rooms allocated this time on our return were fabulous. Comfortable, ( loved the sofa in ours) spacious, clean, quiet, excellent facilities, warm, superb bathrooms ( one couple had a bath, the others a shower room). The staff were excellent, the service very good, breakfast plentiful. Thank you Nothing
- Yvette (7/5): - Right in the square and handy for shops bars etc and a short walk to the castle Noisy early in the morning and a very small room
- Mike (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff and excellent breakfast. Room was a bit small.
- Matthew (10/5): Enjoyed every moment and the dog! - Such a friendly atmosphere and the rooms fabulous location couldn’t be better!
- Nigel (7/5): -
- Gemma (10/5): Absolutely excellent customer service - It was my husband's birthday so they automatically upgraded our room and put a complimentary bottle of prosecco in the room. The staff were lovely and the evening meal in the restaurant was superb. Breakfast was good with a large buffet range and hot food cooked to order with very good quality ingredients. Staff were very friendly and chatty. Nothing
- Hayley (9/5): -
- David (8/5): Lovely little hotel in a lovely place -
- Kathryn (10/5): Perfect. - The hotel was central and well maintained. The staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was excellent. We had a thoroughly lovely stay in pleasant surroundings with the help of wonderful staff. There was nothing we didn’t like. We had a perfect stay. Thank you.
- Susan (8/5): Great stay in Helmsley. - Great location on the square in lovely Helmsley. Lovely staff. Hotel was lovely but room was very small.
- Neil (9/5): Brilliant stay just what we needed. - Stayed many times, staff always pleasant, rooms clean, location and food excellent. Parking can sometimes be a small problem .
- phil (10/5): - Very friendly staff There was a bit of a misunderstanding over the bill, but it was rectified
- Richard (9/5): Fantastic hotel in lovely town - Staff were really friendly, rooms comfortable and well appointed. Breakfast and evening meal were great. They made my Mum’s birthday really special! N/A
- THOMAS (9/5): VERY GOOD STAFF SO HELP FULL - BREAKFAST WAS GREAT ROOM TIP TOP DINNER NOT SO GOOD MENU A BIT LIMITED NOT TO SUIT OUR TASTE
- Angus S (10/5): Weekend in Helmsley - Excellent spacious room with separate bath as well as shower in bathroom.
Good breakfast, perfect location for exploring the area on foot. (Walk to Reviloux Abbey). Decent free WiFi, welcoming staff. Rooms out back in a separate building are very quiet. Nice restaurant with other options within 5min walk in the town. Parking can be a challenge as there are only 5 free spaces behind the hotel so reservation not really feasible, however, there are numerous places to park for free nearby if you look around and have some patience. (Outside FatFace or on the roadside heading east) Or ample paid parking.
- Harris (8/5): Good - Comfortable, good food (however at breakfast the beans were cold) I was woken at around 2:30 by someone going past the room playing loud music. I was woken early around 6pm by what must have been noise from the kitchen in preparation for the day.
- Guest (9/5): -
- Linda (9/5): -
- chynna (10/5): Gorgeous stay! - Booked 1 night for my boyfriends birthday, I had requested a little birthday decoration for our arrival. Was an absolute pleasure to walk in to a balloon & bottle of prosecco!
Food in the restaurant downstairs was absolutely delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Room itself was gorgeous!
Facilities were great! Tea/coffee, biscuits. Shower gel/shampoo and conditioner provided. Also had ironing board & hair dryer. Nothing I didnt like ! Would definitely book again.
- Denis (10/5): Excellent - We wouldn't hesitate in recommending the feathers, and would definitely book again. - We didn't book breakfast, but we did note other visitors who did and it looked very good quality.
The location has everything you need whether you're B&B or self-catering. Helmsley is a beautiful market town with lots of individual shops and eateries, we ate at 'Spice 4U' 'The black Swan' and 'The Feathers' and can highly recommend all, make sure to take some tasty treats home from the excellent deli in the market square, and a visit to the Castle and Duncombe park is a must. N/A

- Charlotte (8/5): Would highly recommend! - A very homely, welcoming feel but with some high quality features. Loved to bath in our bedroom! Felt very decadent. Some other areas of the room looked a little tired. However, these didn't affect our stay.
- Judith (8/5): -
- john (8/5): Enjoyed our stay - Great location excellent staff.
- Dalton (8/5): -
- Andrew (9/5): - Great location welcoming and friendly staff clean comfortable room great bar and a fantastic pint of old peculiar
Nice breakfast and a good choice
Happy with our stay 🙂
- Carlo (8/5): -
- crinno (9/5): Very enjoyable -
- Dorothy (5/5): - Great location Curtain hanging off light coming through window and bottom of the door, pillows very uncomfortable, small room as two adults and a dog, didn’t eat in hotel as too expensive
- Suzie Akers Smith (5/5): Great location, poor service. - Central location, was good for walks and visiting tourist attractions. The pub side was good, great atmosphere. The breakfast staff were rude and unhelpful. So much so you didn't feel comfortable asking for more orange juice or more toast. They took ages to serve some of our guests and had forgotten to serve 2 of them. I have worked in a customer service environment so I understand what makes it good. Things like answering back, when we asked for more toast we were told they had served us enough. We booked 9 rooms and many of us felt as if we were an inconvenience to the breakfast waiting staff. They also didn't clear our tables in a timely fashion and I was left to move dirty plates and cups to another table to make room. The staff definitely need training in how to look after customers. Pretty poor show. I would stay at the Black Swan again poles apart in terms of customer service.
The evening staff, when asked for a drink at 11.15, were told, no, I have a fxxxxing home to go to. I mean, really.
- Janet (7/5): - Clean and comfortable

- Michael (10/5): - Lovely clean hotel and room. Staff really friendly, food excellent and great location on main square nothing
- sharon (9/5): Lovely would recommend - Really lovely room, friendly staff and nice food Very hard to park at the hotel, the car park was tiny and shut off for 2 days so just be aware of this, although later in the day you can park in side roads or pay to park in the square
- Alfred (9/5): -
- Neil (8/5): PERFECT - LOVELY HOTEL ,GREAT WELCOMING STAFF ,FOOD WAS GREAT AND COSY BAR TO RELAX IN . GREAT STAY FOR BUSINESS ,WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK
- b (9/5): Lovely hotel overlooking the market place - This is a lovely old hotel overlooking the market place. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. We ate two nights in the restaurant and it was very good - and large portions also breakfast was good. The parking situation wasn't great - having been there before expected a large car park unfortunately this has been taken away so we had to park on the road.
- Scarlett (10/5): Lovely stay, we will be coming back! - The rooms were so cosy and comfortable, the facilities were very good. The radio in the room playing classical music is a lovely touch and there are so many great places to explore in and around Helmsley. Along with this, the restaurant is lovely with good food and all the staff were very nice and helpful. Nothing 😊
- jim (8/5): -
- Stephen (4/5): - Location and comfort Poor welcome, no parking for guests, no usable WiFi. Poor cleanliness in bathroom. Limited breakfast choice. Some rude staff.
- Maureen (8/5): Stayed here before nice hotel in centre of Helmsley - Centre of Helmsley Room 21 terrible drain smell in bathroom
- David (7/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Gaby (10/5): -
- Roger (8/5): -
- Neil (8/5): Poor room quality - All the staff were great, funny polite and helpful.
Food was nice. We were given rooms in the cottage at the back. 33 and 32. My wife and I had no33.
The room was tired. Chipped, and old looking furniture.
The room had cobwebs in it. Above and to the right of the TV, above the bath, behind the entrance door.
The bathroom was very tired with mouldy build up around the shower base, and generally very tired and in need of a make over..
I looked in my friends room no32, similar issues and very poor paint job in the bathroom.
These were described as I think superior rooms but they were not.
There was a lot of noise from directly above room 33, very noisy floor boards and noisy TV. Not sure if this a guest room or staff.
Late on Monday afternoon someone was pressure washing the parking area at the rear doors.
However this had not been finished and left as a wet muddy area.
We all realised on Tues morning we had walked through the mud in the dark on returning to our rooms on Monday evening!!!!!!
All the staff were encountered were excellent.
We have stayed at the feathers previously in one of the rooms in the main building with none of the issues as mentioned for room 32 and 33.

- Anthony (8/5): Made very welcome, in my own home town. - All interactions with very friendly staff; excellent food The smallest hotel room we have ever been in – once we adapted to it, it was fine!
- Robert (10/5): - Great location, friendly staff, clean and a good breakfast! Room was on the cramped side.
- Stephen (10/5): One night for my birthday and an evening meal, perfect. - It was a very old and quirky building with many sections and snug rooms N/A
- Kevin (10/5): A delightful overnight stay - Staff were excellent. Friendly and helpful. Lovely dinner and great breakfast. Room was spacious, good shower comfy bed and drinks available. It was all lovely
- Derek (6/5): Unfortunate - Lovely breakfast Heating was off........struggled with wi fi.no one on reception..no one answered phone. We managed to find a member of staff to report the heating problem. He had a look and said he would come back but no sign of him for an hour...My wife found the Manager who had just come back on shift and moved us to be fair.to another room in the end...not a great stay for us at all
