Guest Reviews
- Rory (9/5): - Nice room and clean. Staff were very nice. Good location. We had a lovely stay.
- Andrew (5/5): Good location - Good location. Liked the kitchen and upstairs bbq terrace Although we booked a room with private bathroom, it was separate and down a hallway to the kitchen. It was not cleaned in the week we were there, and nor was the room
- Victor Gabriel (10/5): -
- JEAN PIERRE (10/5): Trop bien dommage trop court.
- George (10/5): - Unique stay as all rooms had personal touches. Loved having access to kitchen amenities

- Loris (7/5): -
- Hofman (10/5): - locatie niets
- Anna (3/5): Mis-sold - it’s a shared apartment. - It was clean. Location is great. This is not a B&B or a guest house as you are led to believe. This is a flat divided into rooms, you are in a shared apartment. There is no bed and breakfast, and certainly no reception.
As you walk into the apartment block, it is clear you are in a residential building with 6 apartments, as you climb to the top and enter you walk past what you eventually work out are locked bedrooms 1&2. As you continue to find bedroom 3, you pass a bizarre kitchen/living area. On the roof we found room 3, with as suggested a terrace but what don’t quite realise this terrace is shared and on arrival we found a lady post-shower chilling outside our room. While we were there, we didn’t know if people were just going to appear outside our room, and rooms 1&2 dont know if they should use it for fear of seeing neighbours in room 3!… a bizarre set up!
Our room wasn’t bad, aircon, good amount of furniture but the bed is certainly undersized for the size of the room. The bathroom is for smaller than a cupboard with a broken shower head hook. The patio door is upside down! And isn’t secure so leaving valuables is at your own risk, whilst there the front door was often open, along with the apartment door.
There is no breakfast laid on, just the use of the shared kitchen- in the fridge were a couple of items which people had been left on others.
This feels like more of a transient stop over flat not a bisous boutique guest house as it sells itself as.
I use Booking.com because i want hotels and guest houses. I avoid Airbnb because it does exactly what this apartment is doing, carving up what should be homes for locals.
We stayed 2 nights out of our planned 5 and moved to the newly opened hotel across in the old town.
The negative comments unfortunately are bang on. A really disappointing booking. A complete mis-sell.
- Petra (10/5): - Entspannt und eine geniale Lage.
Einfach, aber geschmackvoll und sauber.
- Gemma (8/5): A very homely staff at Downtown Algeria - Location

- Micanti (8/5): - Very good the position.

- giorana (8/5): Bella casa in centro -
- Valentina (9/5): - We stayed in the room upstairs with an amazing terrace to enjoy sun and refreshing wind! The room is very spacious and cosy, definitely a comfortable space! The bathroom is a bit small, but very functional and equipped with all you need! There is a common huge kitchen, stylish and useful.
Location perfect, 2 minutes walking from the town center and the docks where to catch the ferry for the islands.
Totally recommended!
- Margo (10/5): Lovely! - The room and bathroom were lovely, there was also a big kitchen that you could use. I give this a 10 out of 10, only the matrass was a bit on the harder side but that is just preference!
- Antonio (8/5): Very good -
- Alan (6/5): An enjoyable stay, but marred by bed-bugs, for which the owner apologised and assured corrective act - Good location, close to waterfront, restaurants, town centre and ferry to beach. Excellent shared kitchen / dining room. We stayed 5 nights in mid June, with temperatures exceeding 30C. The bedroom and shared kitchen/dining room lacked any air-conditioning. Our otherwise pleasant stay was marred by it becoming clear by our last day that my wife had been bitten extensively by bed bugs. We notified the owner by email. The owner promptly acknowledged the existence of this problem and advised that the room had been subsequently treated. The owner offered apologies but no recompense.
- Irina (10/5): Very good! -
- Amoo (9/5): Superb -
- Juan (9/5): Highly recommended - How accessible they were and the easy to follow instructions to check in
- Moktan (8/5): Very good -
- Gillian_onegiantstep (9/5): A nice stay close to centre of town. - A nice stopover on our cycle tour. The room was comfy - we were able to use the kitchen and sitting area to make/eat breakfast in the morning. Note that the stovetop (burners) are NOT available for use. It was quiet and close to everything. Nothing - it was as expected.
- Verna (8/5): Very good - Good location. Restaurants around. A coffee shop down the street for the morning. Kitchen is well equiped and a shared space between several rooms. There is a sitting area but no TV. The parking is on the street and for a cost. Free parking is farther away. There is no lift and rooms are up several flights of stairs.
- Towyn (10/5): Exceptional - The location was perfect, very nice clean and comfortable room. Such good value for the money.
Very helpful staff.
We had a great stay here and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Jane (10/5): We stayed there because our bus was 3-30am and we wanted to be near bus station - Didn’t have breakfast had to leave very early Nothing everything fine
- Kelly (9/5): Nice place. - We had the penthouse suit which was very nice and private even thou the patio is shared with two other rooms. The kitchen as very large and modern with everything you need for a party of 30 people. Location was central and unit was at the back of the building so very quiet at night. The bed is a smaller full bed which was unfortunate for such a lovely unit which could accommodate a King or Queen bed easily. I’m a tall man 6’2” and my feet hung over the end of the bed, width was the minimal dimension for full beds according to google. There is no castle view as indicated in the description as a new square black building monstrosity was built which blocked the view.
This B&B is on two separate floors of which we were on the second floor which had its own keyed access door for security. The problem was the security door utilized an old skeleton key which got stuck in the lock once trying to access the suit and was very difficult to remove due to inserting it the wrong way. The following day someone had locked the door to full security and the lock jammed locking us in and another person out who had called for help. After many minutes I managed to get the door open.
- Cara (4/5): Not a good choice in the heat - Location On the site, it says that the rooms have either AC or fan. We understood that to mean that we would have a cool room indoors. That was not the case. The bathroom was extremely hot and the bedroom had only a ceiling fan. We had to keep the windows open all night and the room is just above the street, so all the noise all night until after 1am and early morning starting at 6am came in and kept us awake when the heat wasn’t keeping us awake. Finding the place was difficult even with the google map and I had to ask 3 shop keepers. Finally the 3rd was able to point us to the location as the sign is difficult to find. Check in instructions said that it was autonomous, but we actually had to knock and wait to be let in. When we did that, another couple was there at the same time. That’s when we learned that we would be sharing one apartment with 2 different bedrooms with that couple. I do not feel the information on the site accurately described this. Our bathroom, besides being very hot, had a moldy look in the shower. I hung a bathing suit over the door and rust got on and stained my suit. We stayed in many other places in the Algarve and this one was quite disappointing compared to all the others.
- Paula (8/5): Very good -
- Peta (6/5): Ok but couldnt recommend to friends - Fine but I wouldn’t call it a guest house. The set up wasn’t ideal for strangers sharing. The upstairs terrace was quite run down. There were 5 flights of stairs to climb to get to the apartment and there was no air con.
- Mandy (8/5): However, I wouldn't stay there again because it was just too loud for me. But if you want to experie - The staff was very nice and provided breakfast on request. There is also a small supermarket right next to the accommodation so you could prepare your own breakfast. The kitchen was fully equipped. There were several restaurants in the area, including for breakfast.
The connection to Tavira Island was easily accessible either by car or by ferry. The accommodation was right in the town of Tavira. As a result, it was a little noisier. It was difficult to find a parking space every evening, despite the large public parking lots, which were almost always full. At night the garbage was collected, which meant you definitely couldn't sleep. Unfortunately, the location is not suitable for a good night's sleep.
The room was very small, so you couldn't even put your suitcase on the floor and keep walking around the room.
- Pamela (8/5): Very good -
- Jakub (9/5): Superb -
- Jordan (9/5): Superb - Location, terrace, price! A lot of stairs to the top with heavy bags, food was left in the fridge from guests before us, air con didn’t work.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Great location,we went with friends and our room was great but our friends was small with separate bathroom and no air con or tv but they paid the same price, great kitchen area
- Vickie (9/5): Superb -
- Kitty (10/5): Great location, lovely property! - Fantastic location and wonderfully decorated property. The shared kitchen is well stocked with glassware, plates, cutlery etc. Great air conditioning in the bedroom and lovely view across the square. Really loved the little touches, felt very homely and clean.
- Sofia (5/5): Passable - The bedroom was tiny, we couldn't move in our bedroom, no TV set, no air conditioner. The websites photos look much better than it is.
- Jasmine (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, once knocked on the main outside door, the lady who greeted us was lovely, once inside after we were taken to the apartment, we were handed the keys no more knocking for us, I would recommend this to everyone, , my husband especially liked the ice maker 👍😃 My husband would have liked a TV as he does like to keep up with the news,
- Jürgen (10/5): - Alles bestens so wie erwartet
- Ljubicica22 (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (9/5): Superb -
- Margarida (10/5): Exceptional -
- Örjan (9/5): Superb -
- Roberta (7/5): Decent accommodation with easy access to downtown - This property is in a great location for wandering around downtown Tavira. The shared kitchen was nice and everything seemed to be clean and well taken care of. The onsite staff were pleasant. The doors had well insulated, newer windows that helped to keep the outside noises to a minimum. The room doesn't actually have a castle view, there probably used to be a view before the new theater was built. Now the castle can only be seen from the *shared* balcony. Even though the "castle view" room is the only one on the balcony level, all guests have access to that balcony; and this balcony is immediately outside the double glass doors for the room. The balcony furniture is not very comfortable to sit for very long, so I guess that can help to discourage other guests from spending too much time outside the room.
The bed was comfortable, but the bathroom was very cramped and it was difficult to get it to dehumidify; we left the bathroom door open with the fan running all day long to try to resolve this. The shower needed a more thorough cleaning, I noticed what appeared to be mold in the shower; probably due to the problems with humidity.
Be sure to sign on for ALL the WiFi's from day 1!! When we checked in we were told a specific wifi to use and we were told the wifi was being worked on. The wifi was awful and we could barely get a signal in our room. After a couple of days I asked about the wifi again and was told to use the other wifi as it used the same password...would have appreciated being updated about this right away.
Parking was ok, even though it was a couple hundred meters away. The lot was mostly full, but we were always able to get a spot during our stay in Feb. I could see this being a huge issue in the busy season with the lot easily filled to capacity all the time.
- Heather (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (10/5): See my previous remarks. - Oh my goodness, loved loved loved it and Tavira! Absolutely fabulous value with an absolutely fabulous room with a beautiful view of a town square. A full working kitchen with everything equipped to make a fabulous meal. I truly loved having the Nespresso machine a few steps from my lovely room. A fabulous value, wonderful staff and an absolutely fabulous terrace which is shared with other guests. I was only scheduled to stay 3 nights, but I added and extra 3 to my itinerary. Tavira and Downtown Alegria B&B are true GEMS!!! I will definitely be back. That I had to leave!!! I could stay a month or more if my schedule would permit it!!!
- Margaret (9/5): Great location - Great location 2 streets back from the river with a nice view of a quiet square.
Lovely continental breakfast.
A special mention to the Indian young man Gircharnjit who was learning how to do everything.
He was very polite & working hard & did his best to make sure we were OK with everything, including offering ideas of where to visit. We didn't dislike anything
- Kellie (10/5): Exceptional - It is a quiet room- but New Years was loud. On a major holiday with a party involved this may not be the place for you. We loved it though and will be back. Some mold in the top floor suite’s shower that needs addressed. Bed small in the top floor suite would be small for a tall couple
- Anonymous (6/5): The service was not up to hotels or other BnB’s - Location Poor to no wifi in the bedroom. Hot water only one of two days.
- Luisa (9/5): I would stay here again it’s a lovely place. Very clean and fully equipped. Staff was very responsive - Fully equipped and very stylish. If I had to pick something I would say Bathroom was a little but tight
- András (8/5): Very good - Kitchen and living room were comfortable.
Location was more than good, even a grocery shop next to it. The microwave was not working.
On the photos from Booking the stove is there, however, was out of order because it is a B&B.
- Lynwen (8/5): Very good - Good location in Tavira and comfortable bed and good sized room.
- Combes (9/5): Superb -
- Estelle (10/5): Very central, lovely decoration and terrace - We loved the central yet quiet location, the lovely room decoration, the terrace, and the service and responsiveness of the owner. We can only recommend this downtown b&b! Nothing
- Kathleen (9/5): Would return to Tavira & Downtown Alegria. - Helpful information given at check-in. Location was great with short walk from train & bus stations & plenty of choice for restaurants nearby. I enjoyed the rooftop terrace every day that I was there & also the very clean shared kitchen & lounge area. Bed was very comfortable. Shower was a little small and did not drain well. Minor issue.
- Linda (7/5): Clean room, comfortable beds and good, safe location of the property - The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The view over the square was nice. There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The location was central and pleasant. There was a peaceful and safe atmosphere in the square outside. The room was fairly small and the bathroom was down the hall and not integral to the room. There were tea and coffee making facilities in the room but we didn't find any breakfast anywhere on the property. We didn't see any staff during our stay. We were not sure whether the kitchen area that our bedroom was adjacent to was going to be used by other guests or whether the rooftop terrace which was accessible from the kitchen area was for our use or for others.
- Rachael (9/5): Overall we had a wonderful time here. It was a perfect base to explore Tavira. - Great location, lovely room with rooftop terrace The air on didn’t seem to work to full capacity
- Anderson (8/5): Very good - Bedroom layout and large bathroom, quiet area yet very close to best beaches and good restaurants. Only fan in the room it can get quite warm. No cooking ware available, only microwave.
- Fred (10/5): Exceptional - Great place
- James (10/5): Super host. Rui went way above to make our stay. - Excellent location. Excellent host Nothing
- Teresa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diana (8/5): Very good -
- Qiyun (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! The location is great! Very close to everything and the room is beautiful and airy and super super clean! I like how it's a room in an actual apartment and you have the proper home-like kitchen and living room feel! You do share with another room I think but because it's in an actual apartment, it feels very natural. The kitchen has everything you need and the fridge comes with ice and cold water! The staff is super nice and even with language barriers, they still try to communicate and be helpful! This is super nice! The whole place abd the area feels very safe! Highly recommend!
- Jaspreet (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marie (8/5): Very good - The central location in the historic town, and the bed was very comfy with good beddings A bit noisy from the restaurant downstairs, but that stopped at a decent time
- Natasha (10/5): An excellent find - When I booked this room, I was expecting there to be other suites on the same floor who shared the outdoor patio. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was only one suite, practically a penthouse! Although other guests could potentially utilize the space, I didn't see anyone using the patio during my entire stay. It felt very private and relaxing! No Complaints. The view of the castle was not quite what I expected but the nearly private patio suite far outweighed anything close to a complaint. Great stay!
- Tracey (8/5): Very good -
- Bram (9/5): Functionally pretty - well decorated and convenient location I never talked to anyone because there is no staff around
- Maia (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (7/5): Good - Close to centre, pretty decor Lady who checked us in spoke only Portuguese so we were not aware our 'private' bathroom was just off a common kitchen and sitting room. Louvred door to bathroom also didn't help. Ants appear to have set up home there as well.
- Eileen (9/5): Excellent Diwntown AlegriaB&B - From walking through the door we settled in straight away . The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. The Kitchen and lounge area are quite spacious and also comfortable.
The location is perfect for the train station ,resteraunts and sight seeing. The WiFi was poor in the bedroom but I feel as though this is not worth mentioning due to the overall experience .
- Alison (9/5): Superb - Lovely apartment! Staff very friendly and accommodating Fantastic terrace with views!! Great facilities, comfy bed and very clean 😊 All good 😊
- Siglinde (8/5): It was a good stay there with very friendly owners. - The room was large and well equipped, and there was a nice private terrace. The bathroom is a little bit small. It would have been nice if the kitchen had a few more utensils, like a toaster, some more wine glasses, and a working stove. Perhaps it works but we couldn´t figure out how to turn it on.
- Mila (9/5): Superb -
- Anaika (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (10/5): Perfect stay. - A very warm welcome from all of the staff. The accommodation was spotless with very comfortable beds. The interior was very quaint and well about and even had a library of books to read. A lovely find, we will be back.
- John (10/5): wonderful place to stay in a very charming town. we would love to return - great location, very clean and welcoming
- Dean (4/5): Uncomfortable - Close to a nice restaurant not clean and in need of attention
- Rachel (7/5): Clean and comfortable, great location, poor Wifi - Clean, comfortable bed, fantastic location WiFi didn't reach the bedroom or communal area that I had access to, contrary to the property description.
- Mcdorman (10/5): very nice property, comfortable bed, nice outdoor space. in all we would stay here again without question. - very comfortable with a deck (not private but nearly so ) just outside our door. our room on the top floor was wonderful. the shared kitchen was also very nice and modern, though we didn’t use much.
- Krishnaja (9/5): Superb -
- Alexandra (8/5): Very good -
- Grace (10/5): Exceptional - Brilliant spot
- Miguel (7/5): Good - Clean, well equiped overall, easy check-in/check-out & contact with hosts, location Did not understand this was a shared apartment (although it was a private room with a private bathroom outside the room), so we almost accidentally entered another guest's room (I think we gave them a scare). Maybe this misunderstanding was our fault, but this information could be clearer in the booking page.
