Guest Reviews
- Harold (8/5): - Staff were very helpful and good snorkelling right out front.
Pick up for whale swimming off the wharf was handy as it saved a trip to those operators
- Muimui (10/5): - Very clean
- alvin (10/5): - Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at MS. Will come back again and recommend to friends and family.
- Nicola (10/5): - A beautiful remote property where the owners are committed to guests being satisfied
- Verified traveler (6/5): - need aircon or side fa not from the top..too strong
- Verified traveler (8/5): - My unit was clean and modern (though without a TV), and the WiFi Internet was reasonably fast and reliable (though data capped at 500 MBytes per coupon; fortunately the staff made coupons readily available).
The host (Mosi) was very friendly and helpful, and helped raise my rating of this property.
Be warned that this area is very limited in facilities. There are only very basic stores nearby (even in the 'main' town). The staff will arrange rides to/from the main town (at $Tonga25 each way); there are some restaurants/bars there. (For a round-trip shuttle from/to the airport, they charge $Tonga120 total.)
(Don't be fooled by the 'infinity' pool shown in the photo; it is just a child-sized wading pool. Fortunately there is good swimming/snorkeling available in the ocean (and kayaks provided).)
- Gina (10/5): - Mystic Sands is a hidden gem. It surpassed all expectations and our family started planning our return trip the second we arrived. Mosi and her staff were the most welcoming and capable hosts I have ever experienced. The owners of this resort won the lottery when they got Mosi! I am half Tongan and wanted a neat experience for my kids’ first visit to Tonga. I didn’t expect the luxury we experienced. We stayed in the waterfront house and were blown away by the views and amenities. Mosi cooked breakfast and dinner for us as an add on to our trip and her meals were amazing and will be memorable for years to come. We were only at Mystic Sands for two nights and will be going back next time for several more. The dock is one of only a few in the area and diving and fishing boats will pick you up right from the dock. We snorkeled just off the dock with the gear at the resort and it was perfect for our 8, 10 and 11 year old kids. The little pool was clean and perfect for the kids when the sea was too rough for swimming since we were there in a pretty stormy week. The only hesitation I have about recommending this resort is that others will find out about it, and it will be hard to book a return trip.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful location, quiet and relaxing
Free kayaks available
- John (10/5): Best Service/Cultural Experience of any hotel!!! - My experience at Mystic sands went FAR above and beyond what I was expecting. I was expecting a regular hotel experience, but it turned out to be far more. Mossy and her husband Maka are the caretakers for the hotel and they took care of us like family from the start. Maka is the driver for guests (including airport pickup/dropoff) and Mossy takes care of breakfast, activity/excursion bookings and pretty much everything else. The hotel has (I think) 5 regular rooms, plus a standalone large house with two king bedrooms. We booked a regular room but Mossy moved us into the standalone house since we were the only guests there. Throughout our stay, my friend and I interacted with Mossy/Maka many times. Mossy is like a mother and has an outpouring of love and kindness.
TIP - If you are there on a Sunday - go to church with Mossy and Maka. The language is Tongan but the experience was spiritual and heartfelt... and the singing is fantastic.
TIP - Remember Tonga is more about cultural experiences... There are not a lot of restaurants/bars/etc., so grab your own food at the market/store. Definitely make sure to have food/drinks purchased before Sunday, as stores are closed all day Sundays.
- Karl Vilhelm (8/5): Great staff - Wonderful staff and lovely setting. Very helpful management.
- Kevin (8/5): - Thoroughly recommended. Nicely appointed and both the staff and the owner really work to ensure that your stay is a good one
- Dominic (10/5): - Very personable people looked after us really well, the location was great and the whole area beautiful.
- Kevin (10/5): Best place to stay in Vava’u - We loved our stay at Mystic Sands, the staff were great and took good care of us. Town is not in walking distance, but the 2-bedroom house has a kitchen so we cooked at home a lot. Mosi can cook meals for you on request.
- Stef (10/5): 1 foot to the beach and the tropical fishes - This hotel is really nice and the view is amazing.
The staff is here for you, all the time with a huge smile and the owner too.
Is was an awesome holidays there
You go to sleep and wake up with the sound of the sea.
You just have to walk to the pontoon for you a multitude of tropical fish
- Chris (10/5): Absolutely Magical - From the time I was picked up at the airport by Maka to enjoying one of Mossi's home cooked dinners my experience at Mystic Sands was magical. Beautifully located right on the water with incredible views of other islands and coastlines. Used the free kayaks often to tour the coastline and the small island a kilometer or so in front of the resort. Took advantage of Maka's island tour as well as the boat tour with Ben and his eldest son Steppa. I had been working in Fiji the prior week and had 4 days/3 nights holiday and had to decide between Somoa, American Somoa, another Fijian Island or one of the Tonga islands. There is a direct flight from Nadi, Fiji to Vava'u, Tonga. Glad I picked what I did!!! FYI - Kjell and Adriana (the owners) were always quick to help with arrangements before I showed up and while I was there. Tongans must be the friendliest and nicest people in the world! FYI - it is 10 minutes from town so hire a car or expect to use a taxi or Maka.
- Jackie & Gary (10/5): Best in Vava'u - Mystic Sands is by far tne of the best places to stay in all of Tonga. The rooms are very comfortable and the kitchen is conveinient. Everyone at Mystic Sands is friendly and helpful making your stay everything you wish for it to be.
Snorkeling is great, there's lots of fish, rays and coral around unlike some places that only have dead reefs or just sand and no fish, Mystic has plenty of colorful fish. The kayak trip to Lotuma is fun and the kayaks are better then most. There's also good snorkeling in this area.
Many Thanks to Kjell, Adrianna, Mosi & Maka!
We'll be back!
5+ stars for Mystic Sands
- Glenda (8/5): Small Resort with Big Heart - Owners and staff make every effort to ensure your stay is comfortable. Quiet and relaxing ambience; bring earplugs though if you'd be annoyed by middle-of-the-night roosters and church bells.
- Verified traveler (10/5): relaxation plus - A great location to have the opportunity to enjoy 'paradise' and , briefly, to feel a part of the local culture.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice little place at the beachfront - Perfect place for relaxation! You can swim all day, because they have a jetty. Wonderful laying there in the evening looking at the stars. Good snorkelling, you can borrow kayaks and snorkeling equipment. Nice and tidy, lovely staff fixing everything. There is not a restaurant but Mosi the fantastic housekeeper can fix a good meal if you tell in advance. The Norwegian owner is supernice.
