Guest Reviews
- aleksandr (4/5): - Price is good.Need renovation.
- Cheryl (6/5): - The owners very nice everything is old school needs updated area secluded
- tomasz (2/5): - The motel charges an unexpected additional fee of $10, which included $3 for parking.
- Kathryn (8/5): - The new office person needs a translation app. He’s not very good at understanding English.
- Jeri (2/5): - Don't stay here!!! They don't honor Expedia rates and charged us a higher fee for the room. I just need a plyti sleep for a couple of hours but the bed was not comfortable, so I gave up and left.
- aleksandr (4/5): - Expect the service what you were paid for.
The cheapest property on the block.
- Carolyn (8/5): - Old
- Dennis (4/5): Sands - An off the path minimalist
- Reginald (2/5): - below average
- jose (8/5): - Place was okay, you get what you pay for.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This is a motel that is on its way to die, like many of the other shuttered motel structures on main street. Room met the minimum needs but nothing else positive to stay. The additional $7 unannounced surcharge for using a credit card above what was on my Expedia total really frosted me. We were one of three occupied rooms in the entire facility the two nights we stayed there if that gives a better indication.
- Seung-Tae (2/5): - Old man at the front desk is a liar. Made reservations for two people, went to check in, he says that we only made reservations for one person and tried to charge us double. Dirty old towels in the unit and the whole motel was completely empty. Best to stay away from this motel
- Junya (6/5): - Very old motel, needs to be remodeled
- Michael (2/5): - We walked into the room and walked out! Did not feel safe. They refused to return my money! Do not waste your time there.
- David (2/5): - The 2nd room was great. The first had a busted AC unit. That's fine, but the manager (owner) insisted it was in order and there is no other room and this is why he does not want Internet orders. After half an hour of fiddling around, he gave me another room...But, "don't touch th AC unit"... I decided not to call him on the accusation. Go where clients are welcome.
- Linda (4/5): OLD - At checkin, said did mot have reservation . Very old hotel and clean but the cleansing agent was so strong, that eyes watered and we debated leaving. It was primarily in barhroom so kept that door closed and kept outside door open a long time. Bed was very comfortable so we slept well. Would not return here. TV nice but failed for a while but after satellite fixed, worked
- Wolfgang (10/5): - Nicht auf den neuesten Stand aber sauber.Sehr freundliches Personal
- Martha (4/5): - I would not recommend this property. The motel clerk/owner was rude, said we only paid for one person (I paid online for 2), provided one bath towel, and the floor of the tub/shower was so wobbly that it was necessary to hold onto the grab bar and shower one handed. The only good point was a very nice Mexican restaurant a couple of blocks away - we had a great dinner but I would never stay at this motel again.
- Paul (6/5): - Sands is a classic Rt66 motel, but it needs a lot of TLC to bring it up from "rundown" to "iconic". The room seemed clean, but the table was sticky. Parking lot is dirty and broken up. Bathroom door had no latch let alone lock. It's located on the highway near the train tracks, so you expect it to be noisy.
On the other hand, the refrigerator was new and the AC worked well, and the price was right.
- Herbert (2/5): Worse nights ever - Had police come bang on my door talking about lord knows what, someone keep opening an slamming the door. Too make it worse the hotels manager keep coming too my room calling as i was trying too sleep. I got sick of it so i left an rather sleep in my truck
- Yann (2/5): - I was charged an extra $15 for a motel fee that was not included in the amount I paid Expedia for the room. Plus the owner was the least agréable person I met in my 17 years traveling in the US….
- joseph (4/5): - Expedia confirmed that my rate was $50 and when I checked out the hotel charged me $60. It is an old and tired hotel in a questionable location.
- Juan (4/5): - Customer service was good excellent !!except the place everything was old it ' needs remodeling!!
- Aaron (2/5): - Nothing
- Carla (6/5): - I booked stay based on being pet friendly. Was told when i checked in they were not. Showed staff webpage that stated otherwise. Staff attempted to overcharge me until i showed confirmation with price booked. It was all very sketchy
- Christine (2/5): - This man was rude, yelling and angry attitude.
Prepaid- wouldn’t let dog sleep in my car.. yelling yelling- unfriendly- refused to give us a room. gonna have to fight the charge -
Rude from the second I walked in- ran me off-knowing it was prepaid.
Don’t go here
- Tom (2/5): - We could not believe the horrible reception we got. He had a list of things you could've do.no eating in room, do not sit anthing on dressers or by tv, so many I can't remember and then he charged me a $20 deposit plus what I'd paid for room. I did get it back in the morning at 7:00 when I rang the bell 3 times. The door to the office was always locked!! I could go on, but it doesn't matter to us any more because we will NEVER stay there again
- Dale (8/5): - Room did not have hot water.
- Verified traveler (2/5): NOT ACTUALLY PET FRIENDLY LIKE THE LISTING SAYS - I never ended up staying after booking. The listing says that it’s pet friendly, but the guy at the front desk said that pets only cause problems and that it’s a $40 non-refundable pet fee. It didn’t seem safe either. There were a few abandoned motels along the way and it was in a very dark area. Gave off the vibes of a very shady place to stay
- Lino (4/5): - Good for a necessity but not for an experience
Very old hotel, they try to keep it clean, but very worn out
- Joseph (2/5): - Booked on Expedia in advance 3 days eatlier. Was told after long drive arrived right before night that room not available after we had Expedia confirmation it was. All hotels were booked in city by then in Grants and no roomsin Albuquerqueor Gallup. Had to sleep in truck with my kids at 30 degrees freezing weather that night before leaving. Do not book there you may be left out in the cold literally.
- Sandy (8/5): - For the price, the property was well kept, unit was clean and tidy, and services were good. I would definitely return.
- Joshua (2/5): - We booked a room a few weeks in advance. Upon arrival for check-in, the property manager told us there were no vacancies left. We attempted to show the confirmation, to which he shook his head & promptly walked away from us.
We went back to the car, planning what our next move should be. No less than a minute past before we heard the property manager yelling at us from outside the car demanding we leave the premises immediately while holding a phone in his hand (presumably threatening to call the police). So we left asap & without quarrel.
It was 1am after traveling 5 1/2 hours from home & all the other hotels & motels in the small town were booked for the night because of the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, NM. We had no choice but to spend a freezing cold, Grants, NM night in a sedan in the corner of a dirt Walmart parking lot. An absolutely dreadful experience & the worst customer service I've received in my life (no exaggeration). There is no guarantee you'll get a room even if you pay & book well in advance. You're literally rolling the dice. 0/10 don't recommend.
- Philip (4/5): - Because we arrived late they cancelled our reservation and then upon arrival, they charged us $20 more than expedia price. The only positive comment i can make is that I slept fine. Otherwise avoid this old rundown dump like the plague.
- Esther (8/5): - Old motel on Route 66. Past its heyday.
- Marian (4/5): Rip Off - The man at check in made us pay more than Hotels.com advertised. He claimed it was because they only had king sized beds vs. The queen advertised. He also made us pay a pet fee when we had a small service dog.
- Susan (2/5): - I requesed an iron and was told they were not allowed. There were black hairs on the sheet, I think they just turn the sheet over and don't wash them! This is the absolute worse motel I have ever stayed in!!!! Never again, please do not stay here I beg you. The area around is very sketchy and one guy was cooking outside his room on a propane grill but I couldn't have an iron.
- Lisa (2/5): Don’t stop at this hotel!!! - The manager treated us like a criminal. Told us not to leave our door open while we were carrying in our luggage because it might blow dirt in there, had signs marking that you could not back your car in, had painted notices not to sit in a cement half wall (I mean, it’s cement…. How are you going to hurt it by sitting on it?) etc. In our opinion, if you don’t like people, you shouldn’t be in the hospitality business!!! The neon sign out front was the only speaking thing about the whole stay. Very disappointing!!
- Eric (2/5): RIP OFF PLACE! Worst experience Ive had on here!! - Ended up not staying after the owner got angry that the price I got on Hotels.com was cheaper than his rate, then tried to charge me $25 more than the price I had. He kept telling me that "He" gave me the wrong price, but didnt say who "He" was, and after I kept telling him it was the price listed on Hotels.com, he started to cuss and say that wasnt right. I said enough and went to grab the piece of paper that I had written all my info on, but he grabbed it and said it was his and that I couldn't have it! His wife then told him to let me have it, but he just ripped it up in front of me and still wouldn't let me have it. This place shouldnt be listed on here, and I would recommend everyone stay away, there are other places. I ended up staying at the Motel6 for $5 more, so check around, and avoid this rip off place!
- Stacy (6/5): - Clean room, nothing special. Man checking acted like had trouble finding reservation, even though I had printed confirmation. Called me by different names. When finally found reservation, immediately gave a higher price. When I said no he asked when i made the reservation..I said in March (for June). He then says the price went up since I reserved. I said no and then he said the price i had on reservation was for one person..even though confirmation clearly said 2. I then said I'll go somewhere else if he cant honor the reservation (even if it truly meant paying more). He finally said I'll give you this price. I'll give you "my" price (what reservation price was)..no one else is as cheap as me.
Once checked in & parked he then told me I had to move over one spot as where i was was not mine. (They were not marked for specific rooms.) Where i had to move over put me coming within inches of a large work trucks bumper. In the AM..car that parked where i originally was had to pull out and wait for me to back out before he could pull back in as i could not squeeze between the two bumpers.
Will not stay here again
- Lon (10/5): Quiet and comfortable. - No frills. Older motel. Clean bed and comfortable! Quiet No coffee maker but had fridge and microwave
- Kathy (6/5): - Very unique property. Owner was more interested in whether we smoked or not over getting us a room. We ordered a two queen room and he said we didn’t…showed proof and he only wanted to argue and charge us more money.
- Christopher (2/5): - The motel is dirty, A/C the loudest I’ve ever heard and across the street from 2-3 train tracks that pass every 5-10 minutes.
- Fred (6/5): Would've been more comfortable in my car.. - Being positive, the bath towel was by far the nicest item in this room, followed by the television and then the microwave, in that order. Then there was a big gap on everything else!
- Gregory (6/5): - Sleep cheap in old facility just over wrong side of tracks. Not for a couple or a family
- Stan (4/5): - Old and rundown
- Benjamin (2/5): Owner scams people - So many problems with this motel. Just to start if you are wanting a Route 66 motel this is NOT it. It’s on a side road and full of sketchy people. Upon check in the owner did not honor our hotels.com reservation and charged us more for our room. Getting into our room there were crickets inside, the floor felt like you could fall through it in areas, holes in the walls, the toilet was duck taped down, there were 2 washcloths, 1 hand towel, and 1 bath towel (this is important for later), the ac did not work, and you could tell something was spilled in the fridge and never cleaned. It was so nasty we didn’t even shower, but did use 1 washcloth and the hand towel which were left on the bathroom floor when we left. A few hours after we checked out and left we noticed an extra $20 charge come through from the motel so we called to find out what it was. The owner proceeded to accuse us of stealing all of the towels and washcloths from the room and called us thieves and said he had video footage of us stealing them. #1 we wouldn’t even put our bags on the floor much less take anything from the room with us, #2 if he had cameras proving any of it he would be implying there were cameras in the room and bathroom. We saw other people complaining in reviews about how he charges and it’s no joke. We believe he targets tourists passing through to get as much money as he can because he knows that once they get a few hours from town that they won’t come back. 0/10 DO. NOT. GO.
- Steve (8/5): - Great price, courteous and helpful staff. The Sands provided the usual amenities - tiny soap, wifi access and a remarkable variety of decent TV channels. The room was clean but needs remodeling. Just wanted a place to stay for a few nights, the Sands was perfect.
- Escoto (10/5): - The room was confortable but no outlets available to charge my phone anywhere. The price was hiked 10 dollars at the property not matching what was stated on the website
- David (8/5): - It was a nice cheap hotel. Only thing that made me a little uncomfortable was when i arrived, they asked what the rate was that expedia said the room was. Never in all my years using expedia have i had a motel do that. They did give it to me at that rate. However, id be very very leary to go back for that reason and that reason only. After that i looked deeper into their reviews and see others have had problems with them not giving the room at the price found online. Ive stayed in hundreds on motels and never once experienced that before. So id be very nervous to go back. Then again, id just see what other rates are in town. Not book online and walk in instead. If they played games id just go elsewhere. But, ill never book online for there. If they hadnt done that, id be giving a 5 star review. But, theres no excuse for that. And i dont need to worry if ill get ripped off when i show up to the motel. And certainly dont need to get questioned when ive booked online. Nobody else does that.
- Matthew (6/5): No breakfast - Ice machine looked like hadn't worked for years and No Breakfast as advertized in the description.
- Laura (10/5): - Room was very clean and quite
- Barbara (10/5): - The bed is good. The wifi is a bit iffy at times. No hangers in the closet. It was very clean.
- Mario (8/5): - Good price and property very clean! parking area excellent!
- Glenn (6/5): - As long as you don't expect to honor the discounted price you will be fine. the normal price is good and that is the lowest he goes, even if one books it at a slightly lower price.
- Gary (10/5): - Clean room, great mattress. 40” TV. Nothing to complain about, just kind of off the beaten path.
- Kathleen (10/5): - na
- Tina (4/5): - This motel is going through a remodel but not there yet. Our room was strong smelling of pine cleaning solution so strong it gave me a headache. Fridge didn't work shower handle was broken and the toilet didn't flush properly. Bed was comfortable room was nice and big .
- Michael t (8/5): - Clean but cramped with two queen beds. Micro Fridge but No coffee maker. Able to park outside the room a plus.
- Angelina (4/5): - The floor in my room is warped underneath the carpet. The toilet was toddler size. And at check in there was a long list of dos and dont etc. No breakfast available even thought it was listed Amenities and no ice available.
- Billy (2/5): Not pet friendly - Pet fee was ridiculously high and the rooms are very old and run down
- Thomas (6/5): Would not recommend - Check-in was irritating since I first had a discussion regarding the type of room and bed reserved (kingsize) along with price. Not happy with the dose of "attitude" after a long drive. Room was okay for a night but rather worn. Would rather spend a few bucks more for a better option.
- Erica (4/5): - No breakfast as advertised
I was actually accused of stealing a vacuum cleaner attachment
? Why would I steal a piece of a vacuum,?
3 half days later I still haven't been returned my deposit and I paid an extra twenty dollars in cash w no receipt for an additional three hours stay past 11:00 09 checkout time the Man was very mean saying that it saw it with his own two eyes
I do not recommend staying there
- John (8/5): - Everything was fine
- Glenn (8/5): - Has the best speed on WiFi so far found at grants
- Rachel (8/5): - Friendly front desk service
Clean room
- edna (10/5): - Extremely clean, new carpeting, comfortable bed and linens. Well-maintained property for a great price. Would stay here again when traveling through.
- Linda (8/5): Nice owner - Good owner communication
- MICHAEL (4/5): - Sucks
- Ramana (4/5): - We realize that this is an older property but we have stayed at other older hotels on Route 66 that were much better quality and condition than this hotel.
Owners were very friendly.
There were rooms rented by others with people going between rooms and singing and music until all hours of the morning on a Sunday night. Trains too.
- Glenn (8/5): - to be honest, i have spent some time with almost every accommodations in Grants so fare, and they are basically the same. There are minor differences but for me not that big a deal.
- Amanda (10/5): Good place to stay - It was a nice quiet place to stay, and very clean, friendly man at check in. Would recommend, and we are going to stay a second night.
- Phillip (6/5): Nice rate but staff courtesy at check out was bad - My arrival was pleasant enough; the couple was friendly when they took my payment. But in the morning I was packing my car at 11 minutes until the 11 O'clock checkout and I get a gruff phone call from the gentleman that worked the desk, barking "You need to check out!" I was out of the parking lot at 10:56 but I didn't appreciate being pushed like that. They were kinder on my last stay.
- Roger (4/5): - Place is definitely a dive. Way off the highway. Reserved a single king, got a singe queen. One towel in the bathroom and booked for two travelers. It was cheap, about the only good thing.
- Logan (6/5): - The hotel looked like it hadnt been changed since the 70’s
- Keith (2/5): - I would not recommend this place. I stayed here before and it was acceptable. Not bad for a $50 room. However, on my most recent visit they wanted to charge me $40 more for my dog. $40? Online, through Expedia, they advertise $10. Very unprofessional people at the front desk were not willing to honor of the $10 per night dog fee. Very peculiar because it was 7:30 at night and there were there was 1 or 2 cars in the parking lot.
- Bonnie (2/5): - Was a terrible experience they couldnt find my reservation then wanted to charge me more then wanted to charge me for 2nd person and thats how i made reservations then he told me to calm down and i was being mean almost left at that point and i should have only one set of towells in room and when i asked for more they were upset.ice machine was dirty and a broom and dust oan that was full was ontp of machine.i wound never recommend this place to anyone.
- Tatiane (2/5): - Was the worst place I slept in all my trips. Was dirty, no hot water( at the day was very very cold and I have 2 babies and 1 toddler that didn’t took shower ).
- Joe (2/5): -
Had not been there for 3 years and the place while old has really gone down. I think the soft mattresses are from the 50's. Dressers and cabinets are old and dirty. Did not even put my clothes in them. Took my own blankets and slept on top of the comforter. To top it off the manager while trying to get me to book the rest of my stay's in Grants overcharged me by $18:00. When I asked about it he tried to tell me it was fees and tax. I told him I would not be staying there anymore he called my room my last night and said he would give me the $18.00 discount on my next stay. Needless to say I would never stay there again. The Asian family that ran that motel would be turning in their graves...It used to be on old but clean and historic stay. Now only 3 cars in the parking lot the 2 nights I was there.
- Farrell (2/5): - I was hoping for a comfortable stay. Nope the room was so cold that the heater was in a different room to where the air wasn't getting in to main room.
- Alishia (2/5): - The place was completely unsafe. The owners didn’t want to give me my Expedia price. I do not recommend this place.
- Blake (2/5): - Unique in that it is a 1950’s era property. Needs complete renovation. Old carpet, stained sheets, weak flooring in bathroom, toilet & tub need recaulking, bathroom door splintered, electrical outlets so worn would not support plugs, needs a paint job after walls & ceiling repairs. The room is dark & dingy. Beds had plastic mattress protection. No coffee in rooms.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Owner tried to charge more than Hotels.com price.
Very dated but adequate.
Breakfast advertised but not available.
Would only use as a last resort.
- Andrew (2/5): - Gave away my room. Hard to call them directly.
- Donna (10/5): - great workers! Clean!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Clean, 2 sinks, good A/C, good service
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We arrived there and the smell inside the office was HORRIBLE. They had no knowledge of my reservation or Expedia for that matter so she grabs my ID and the phone an make a phone call to someone (Not Expedia) and started speaking there language in another room spelling out my name. At the same time the other guy answers the other phonre line and starts yelling at a customer trying to cancel there reservation screaming he DOESN't CARE if they are coming or can't make it that they will still be charged. That was enough I grabbed my ID and left promptly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was extremely clean & comfortable. The outside of the building was simple.
- Seiko (2/5): they charged more for mysterious MOTEL FEE. - the motel was clean and ok but they charge $10 more than web said. I asked why its higher than the price shown on my booking. The motel guy said it is MOTEL FEE and every single motel in this town have to pay $10 extra for MOTEL FEE. I asked what was the MOTEL FEE, and the guy were just keep saying everybody had to pay it in this town. No clear explanation and his attitude was pretty hostile.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The property is old and dirty and extremely dated. The worst part is the owner thinks he has a 5 star resort. Very unfriendly and tried to charge way more than my reservation. I will not stay in this motel again. Put it like this, i would rather sleep in my truck.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We walked out! The man at the front desk was so obnoxiously rude.
- Verified traveler (4/5): No Frills - Our stay was ok. Service was friendly, however, expect bare minimum accommodations. No towels were provided in our room nor was there an iron. Thankfully towels were given when we asked, along with new packets of hair products and soap because the ones in our room looked used. Bathroom was somewhat clean, however, it could be updated since the sink appeared to have rust.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The rudeness of staff, difficulty understanding, they did not honor expedia charge.
- Robert (6/5): Not top of my list - Bare minimum on everything, it was clean that’s about all I can say
- Dan (6/5): Nice but old fashion - Rooms little old fashion, second bed only about one foot from bathroom door/wall hard to squeeze by, pretty quiet, clerk pretty friendly, be careful to verify price they actually charged $10 more than stated and gave a cash"key deposit" in addition.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I did this review already xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I liked the fact you could park your car right by the door. Move things in and out without much issue. The place was clean though a lot of things were old and stained like the chairs and tubs. The Male manager couldn't figure out my booking. He told me the price was for one person, and I had to show the info on my booking to them to tell them that the price was for two and it included tax. Outside of that, they responded to anything we asked for.
- Esther (8/5): - The motel is old and not on main route but the owners are very sweet and hard working. It was clean and comfortable. We like to support small local business owners.
- Diana (2/5): Do not stay here!!! (And I'm not a fussy guest!) - While traveling Route 66 in 2019 I tried to stay with original hotels that are being rehabbed. This one was pretty rough but looked like they were trying to turn it around. Boy was I wrong! I made a reservation hoping to see improvements and what I saw was so disappointing. Everything just looked grungy and decayed, like a rundown rat trap kind of place. I did not feel safe at all.
The manager was disgusted, actually disgusted, that I had booked a room with two double beds when I was traveling alone for the price quoted on hotels.com. He started challenging why I needed two beds, said he had no rooms open with two beds and I would need to take a single bed. I told him with my style of traveling I wasn't interested in a single bed and let's call hotels.com and cancel this non-refundable deal.
Right in front of me he carried on 5 to 10 minute argument with the hotels.com rep, who obviously was handling it very well. When he hung up, suddenly there was a room with two beds available! I refused it, left the office, went out to my car to hear back from the rep. He was very apologetic and offered me a discount on my next stay which was very kind.
I would not recommend anybody staying at this place for any price. There are other hotels in Grants that are in the same budget, much more pleasant in appearance and 100% guaranteed nicer office person. Stay miles away from this place! I have never written such a Negative review.
Hotels.com would do well to stop listing them.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Hotel charge more money other than total price from expedia
