Guest Reviews
Parcheggio gratuito privato.
- Debra (9/5): Enjoyable stay - Traditional Scottish hotel, clean and comfortable. Great breakfast A bit far from the centre of Lerwick and very expensive
- Laurie (10/5): -
- Malcolm (8/5): -
- X3896WMkirstens (6/5): Whatevs - What is objectively clear from the food being served in the restaurant, the chef does not give a sh!÷ about life. His or yours.
Rooms ok. Overpriced, run down, out dated and under invested in. But it's Shetland so you are held to ransom.
- Peter (7/5): -
- Ivan (8/5): Nothing to add - Every thing was good, please note that I booked this for friends and they advised me that all was good. Nothing to add
- James (6/5): Overpriced and substandard, staff were OK but not worth the money - Location of the hotel was good Hotel and room was substandard and the breakfast was OK, but the hotel itself had a pest (fly) infestation so for all six days we had flies in our room it was pretty bad, 1 of our plug sockets was broke so we had to share 1 plug socket that was also bad. Also had the flies accompanying us at breakfast times, too, so the continental was off limits, and the fruit options were a no go.
- Sheltiies (4/5): Will not be returning - The bed is one of the most uncomfortable that we have ever experienced - and we have visited many establishments worldwide! For the price, the whole set up was not good value. We did complain to the receptionist in the morning …. but think it fell on deaf ears! The breakfast was reasonable, but definitely not ‘wow’. The staff were very nice and friendly, but unfortunately we will not be returning to this hotel.
- Marlyn (10/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): Amazing staff, decent facilities - The staff was incredible. Friendly, polite, helpful. A bit dated and in need of lots of little repairs
- Joe (7/5): It was okay, but not exceptional. - Good location, acceptable room, good breakfast. No elevator, few amenities, nothing special.
- Frode (8/5): - Rent og hyggelig personale Litt slitt og utdatert
- pdncpd (4/5): Full of surprises - Quite dated and run down. Check in is on an upper floor. Elevator did not go to all floors. No security chains on the doors of the rooms. No safes in the room to protect valuables while you are out. Wainscoting and wallpaper peeling off in the hall. They do not service your room, pick up the trash, or bring clean towels unless you specifically call them and ask them to... each day. Towels are set out at check in, so you might as well climb the stairs and go get them yourself. Fire equipment on our floor, a hose, had a large sticker on it that said "Do Not Use." Bathroom door handle fell off one morning and I called to see about getting it fixed. Their response, "Well, can't you get out?" Finally got it fixed. The hotel is directly across the street from the ferry terminal. Breakfast is fine. Dinner...take your chances. We ate a lot of scones from local bakeries. The pictures attached were all taken outside our room.

- tracey (10/5): - Exceptional service, food options for Gluten-free were numerous and very tasty. Restaurant pricing was reasonable. Really enjoyed the service at this hotel. The staff are just lovely.
The property is a little dated to look at, but is very clean and comfortable.
Lots of gathering areas thoughout hotel and very good sized rooms.
Would recommend and will return if possible.
- Bette (10/5): -
- Gordon (8/5): Had a great time. - Staff were great. Food was good. Breakfast was great. Lots of parking. Nothing really. Enjoyed my stay.
- Roger (8/5): -
- H5152PVrobertd (8/5): Across from the Ferry Terminal - This hotel is a good choice if you are traveling by ferry. It is across the road from the ferry terminal. The bus into the town centre stops right in front of the hotel or you can have a pleasant 15 minute walk. My room was spacious and comfortable but not fancy.
- mariepQ1404BR (10/5): A special meal on a lovely venue - Best menu and delicious food. Range of traditional and innovative options. Beautifully prepared. Elegant and with a buzz. Felt special.
- David (8/5): - The food was good and there was plenty of choice. The staff particularly in the restaurant were excellent and always attentive which always adds to a stay.
The location was good with plenty of parking
My only slightly negative comment is that with the great view we had of the harbour would have been better had the windows externally been cleaned
Would stay here again

- Susan (10/5): - Friendly staff and was able to check in early which was a great bonus. Room was large and comfortable. Breakfast provided lots of choices.
- Alan (10/5): - Helpful, cheerful staff. Good food. Very relaxing.
- thomas (7/5): Dated hotel, minimal - The location was good. The staff was friendly. No hotter in the shower. Room was baking upon arrival, had to go to a local hardware store to purchase a fan to help cool the room
- William (6/5): Nothing Fancy, but a Great Location - A Shetland local told us there are no great hotels on the island, and it's basically a small town so our hopes were not too hight. The outside of the hotel is rather dismal. In this case the book is better than the cover. Our room was spacious but not fancy. We enjoyed the view - looking right at the ferry building. It was fun watching the ferry leave each night. And we arrived by ferry, so the location was a huge plus.
The breakfast buffet (free) was good. Both hot and cold options. Hot food is cooked to order. There wasn't any room service during our 4-night stay but the lobby had extra supplies laid out so we could grab toilet paper, coffee, towels, etc. at any time of day.
- Sarah (9/5): -
- Adam (6/5): - Very nice evening meal, staff pleasent and helpful. We had a room and suite, it had 2 seats, would of been better with a settee?, bed fairly narrow for a double, bar wasn't open till 5pm, though after asking we did get a drink, breakfast was ok.
- Richard (8/5): - We decided to eat at other restaurants but for breakfast and for our other needs the property was fine and the staff very helpful. We enjoyed our stay.
- Peter (8/5): - Quiet hotel, even though across from ferry landing. Staff was friendly, especially in dining room. Easy walk to the Co-op for supplies
- Sharmane (6/5): - The hotel is ideally located for those taking the NorthLink ferry to and from Shetland. If you are planning to stay for a few days like we did, it's worth noting that the hotel is about a 25-minute walk from the city centre and an 18-minute walk from the central bus transport hub in Lerwick. The staff were exceptionally friendly and provided great recommendations for local sightseeing. One aspect we would suggest improving is the issue of flies entering the room, as the windows lack screens. This did impact our overall experience at the hotel.
- Corinna (10/5): -
- prvnipivni (8/5): Lovely staff and great food - Based at the ferry terminal the hotel is about a 15min walk into the centre of Lerwick and has ample parking. The two main positives were the lovely staff, and the food. I had breakfast and dinner twice and the food was great. The waiting staff were really nice and the chef popped by too. The hotel feels slightly dated although the room was spacious, clean and quiet (I was at the front of hotel) I liked the coffee machine in the room and you could top up with biscuits, tea, coffee etc from reception anytime.
- Adam (7/5): - Food excellent, we had a evening meal, absolutely delicious, breakfast was ok, my wife had scrambled eggs, they looked a bit bland, my cooked breakfast was fine.was very nice having coffee machine in the room. As said, wife's breakfast looked rather bland, hairdryer didn't work in our room .
- Dancea (9/5): - La taille de la chambre, la proximité du terminal de ferry, le restaurant Vieillot - mérite un rafraîchissement
- sue (7/5): We enjoyed the stay.staff were exceptional. - Breakfast and dinner Facilities were tired and worn
- Ali (10/5): Great hotel amazing stay! - Amazing stay!
- Zoe (9/5): Great experience - Comfortable mattress , clean, excellent breakfast, serving staff at breakfast excellent Receptionist on check in non accommodating and annoying . All other reception people were good. Location not right in the town so 15 minute walk to commercial street
- Steve (5/5): Place to put your head down, nothing else, restaurant food was very good. - Not a lot to be honest, the staff were friendly Stuck in the 80s with little investment into the property, out dated, poor.
- Experience667992 (8/5): Shetland Hotel July 2025 - Stayed at the Shetland Hotel for two nights whilst visiting friends in Shetland. I am a regular traveller to the Shetland Islands and have stayed in the Shetland Hotel a number of times.
The room is always immaculately clean and adequately supplied with toiletries/tea, coffee etc with the recent addition of Tassimo coffee machines. You can pick-up additional of any of the above at the reception area. Also available is a large TV, harbour views and plentiful storage. Bathrooms are equipped with bath/shower and I found water pressure to be good.
Although I didn’t eat at the hotel on this occasion I have previously and found the food to be very good, with friendly service.
Noise levels are a consideration - the hotel is situated alongside a very busy road in Lerwick where many commute along from early in the morning. Ideally it is directly across the road from the ferry terminal however this can also bring with it some noise.
The hotel itself is dated and in need of some updating - some of the furniture is showing significant wear and tear and is very old fashioned - not a massive issue for myself but don’t book expecting a modern hotel experience.
The main scope for improvement is manning at the reception desk - I have found on occasion that there is a long wait for check in or out - however the service itself is always good.
Overall, the best hotel in Lerwick in my opinion and another enjoyable stay.
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional - A first class hotel. Great resteraunt, with an excellent breakfast. As the onsite pub was closed, had a long walk to the nearest one. All else was good.
- Sharon (8/5): - It’s probably the ugliest building we’ve ever stayed in, but better inside. Our room was rather ‘tired’ - wallpaper peeling off, large crack in the basin, but was clean. Food was really good, and excellent breakfast.
- ellen m (8/5): - It was comfortable, quiet, clean, convenient to the bus. The food was good but one of the waiters did not get my order correct and did not clean off my table and ask me if I wanted dessert. It was a minor incident but irritating
- Alexander (9/5): Very good - Location Nothing
- Sara5619 (6/5): Pleasant enough, very friendly staff and dog friendly - Staff were absolutely lovely and very accommodating. They are dog friendly and fussed over our two little beagles!
We were on the third floor, which, to be honest, was a bit of a slog each time they needed to go out. Also, if you're elderly there's no working lift, so ask for a room closer to reception. The food was great.
They do not sell alcohol, but you can take your own. The room was ok, three single beds. There was a bit of dust, the bathroom is dated and the door to it needed fixing. It is quite expensive for what you get, but with two dogs you are limited to where you can stay. I understand
It is due to be updated at the end of the season.
- carole (8/5): - The hotel was a bit tired but the staff made up for it - the food service was excellent
- Walter (10/5): Very friendly staff, large suites, very good food. Highly recommended. -
- Bev (4/5): Mixed Bag in Lerwick - Good location, lots of parking space. Great evening meals in the restaurant. Rooms outdated. Very expensive for the rooms not being serviced unless you ask for it. Some staff appeared sullen, others were lovely
- Alan (9/5): Relaxing and comfortable. - Easy to locate and perfect parking. Ideal for ferry arrivals.
- 456alanf (6/5): Convenient location opposite the ferry terminal - This hotel is conveniently situated opposite the ferry terminal. The room as comfortable and a good size, although I was told on arrival it would not be serviced unless I requested it. I dined in r the restaurant one evening for dinner and for breakfast. The food was cooked to a reasonable standard and the staff were polite and courteous.
- Sheila (6/5): Convenient. - Staff were all very friendly , but the hotel is rather dated & in need of a re vamp.
The dining room is unwelcoming & is like being in a ferry . Line upon line of ghastly Formica topped tables . Very unappealing.
Very expensive for quality of the hotel .
- Tom (6/5): - We found the Shelton to be great for travelling by ferry. It’s a short walk to the city center. The included breakfast was a nice benefit with a continental or hot option. We would have liked a longer breakfast hours. We did find it a bit cheeky that the restaurant/bar manager wanted to charge us £3.50 for a glass of ice to take back to our room.
- B6858AKnathanm (10/5): Good luck - Very polite staffed got me to the toilet in speed Ryan it was a good sunny day I was happy with this hotels service thank you
- Kerry (9/5): Great place to explore Shetland on our first trip to the islands, we will be back. - Hotel great for getting out and about on Shetland and just a short stroll into Lerwick. Had dinner ever night, great choice, very tasty and reasonably priced. Good breakfast each morning, they take your cooked breakfast order with nice choice of options (good for the waste as didn't overload the plate). Reception on the 5th floor (which at the back of the hotel is the ground floor given it is on a slope). views from the restaurant are good, looking over the dock at Bressay Island. Staff attentive without being overbearing. when restaurant is full can be a bit noisey. Bed was a bit soft for my liking, but that is being picky.
- Gavin (7/5): Good -
- Geoffrey (10/5): - No probblems and our stay was great .but property needed some repair/maintenance.
- Kathleen (10/5): - 20 minute walk to downtown Lerwick. Staff were so very friendly and knowledgeable. Food was very good, breakfast outstanding. Shout out to Valerie in the dining room.
- Rushworth (10/5): Comfortable and good food. The best was the wonderful, friendly and helpful staff. - Breakfast was excellent. Lots of choice and delicious porridge. Nothing
- Lesley (9/5): Shetland Hotel stay - Friendly staff and unlimited biscuits and tea making facilities The room was only cleaned once in 11 days
- Val (8/5): Very good - Staff very friendly and room well appointed
- Carey (8/5): We enjoyed our stay. - Excellent choice of food at breakfast including continental; also plenty of coffee etc materails in room - for coffee addicts.
- G3677IKjohnm (8/5): I’d happily return here - The hotel is directly opposite the Northlink ferry terminal and it depends on where your room is as to what view you have.
Although my bed springs made a noise when I moved I had very comfortable sleeps. The meals were very good and, although we were on a coach tour with a more limited menu compared to other diners there was still a decent choice for each course. Breakfast service was hit and miss but this was (I think) because there were young trainee staff on duty. However, they were improving as the week went on.
The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the very hard working Jane who went out of her way to find details of church services for us.
The hotel is at one end of Lerwick but, as Lerwick isn’t very big, it’s only about 15 minutes walk from the town centre.
- Anthony (8/5): Very good - Friendly, welcoming Needed a face lift. And a new mattress
- john (6/5): - Plus point,VERY convenient for the ferry.to/from Aberdeen
Negative points.
Reception level on third floor. Utilitarian layout.
Very inconvenient. Elevator arrangement to certain floors1
- BBSwede (6/5): Super friendly staff and a good breakfast - This 3 star hotel is much better than it looks from the very dreary outside. The staff were all fantastic and the breakfast very good. We only had one evening meal which was fine, my sliders were great but my partner was not so keen on his burger. Parts of the hotel seems to be recently refurbished but not sure abou the strange choice of bright dark pink in the hallway to our room ( 506) which to my mind does not fit with the rest of with Shetland.
- KevinP1314 (10/5): Business and pleasure - Whilst in Lerwick educating personnel on a vessel that was destined to work in a hazardous area of the North Sea.
It was a real pleasure to be accommodated in this marvellous hotel that oozes memorabilia from previous Up Helly Ha’s, something I’ve always wanted to attend and this visit will hasten my return.
Professionally ran by a passionate manageress who hails from Shetland which is something us folk of Scotland wish to see more of.

- Karen (8/5): - Excellent location for Aberdeen to Lerwick ferry. About a mile from city center. I walked a lot.
- kenneth (8/5): All that is needed. - Quick and easy check-in and out. Room was large and clean. TV was difficult to control but all that you need was in the room. Breakfast was served which was nice and not a buffet style. Bed was not comfortable and mattress needs to be replaced. Restaurant was fair and not too expensive as the town is a little walk from the hotel.
- Gerd (8/5): All in all a very good stay without any poor surprises. - Friendly staff and good location within Lerwick. Some of the furniture in my room could have been a bit more comfortable.
Heating was on via electric radiator but not much ventilation.
- T (6/5): Pleasant - It sortall rather depressing delivered but not value for money
- Paul (8/5): Pretty decent - Food was excellent Bit dated
- Charles (10/5): - Quick and easy check in and out (at unsociable hours. Friendly staff, and great food. All that I needed for a flying visit.
- conormE2442XG (6/5): Lovely location, good food and nice staff. Basic rooms - Hotel is in a lovely location, right on the coast. Staff all very friendly, and good food. Like other hotels on the island, it’s very dated inside and the rooms are basic but clean. Breakfast served from 6:30 so perfect for a work trip if you need to be out early in the morning.
- Quidknit (8/5): Shetland Wool Week 2024 - The Shetland Hotel is perfectly adequate. It is tired. But it is extremely clean and the staff are attentive and helpful. It is quiet. The bathrooms are basic but sound. The bed linens are nice enough. It is not fancy! But it does the job and sometimes that’s all you need. And for knitters, it is an easy walk to Jamieson and Smith, for repeat yarn purchases.
The restaurant is quite good. Excellent staff.
- Kamaraj (10/5): Exceptional - Room specifically provided smart TV
- Jamieson (4/5): Nice staff, wouldn't stay again though. Bed made me sore - Staff were nice and helpful when I did see someone. It was nice and quiet. TV was decent. Staff were not at reception. Phone to call them there didn't work. My bed was very uncomfortable. Mattress really needs replaced. There was a dry bogey on the wall next to my bed. The free wifi was absolutely terrible. signal dropped every few minutes. The room was overpriced.
- Matthew (7/5): Good - Great hotel right in centre of town perfect for what I needed. Room was clean and facilities plentiful. It's a little dated on the decor.
- John (5/5): Passable -
- Ryan (3/5): Poor - Not much It's just not a great hotel. Be about a two-star in my rating.
- Dianne (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was good and fast. Room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Hotel seemed a little dated. Scaffolding around outside of building indicated maybe work was in progress but interior needed refresh. Wallpaper peeling in many areas.
- Margaret (8/5): Perfect location for our overnight stay and delicious dinner. - Breakfast and dinner were very good and staff very attentive. Unfortunately due to roof repairs there was scaffolding outside our window. This is not a complaint, it is just a comment.
- William (5/5): Apart from the beds all was good. - the location was good. Just over the road from the Ferry Terminal. The breakfast was fresh and wholesome. the floors between the lift stop was a pain but the second time i was on the same floor as the lift stop. The beds were poor. We had a double bed the first time and the mattress was poor. You could feel the springs. The second time we had two single beds. The mattresses were the same.I think the investment in mattress covers would be a great idea.
- Jennie (8/5): A conveniently placed hotel if you are travelling by ferry. - Plenty of choice for breakfast. The room was comfortable and we liked the addition of a coffee making machine.
The dinner menu was better than on our visit in Sept 2023 - more imaginative now. The decor in the corridors needs attention. It needs to be fixed. Someone charged a meal to our room number! We saw it on the final bill and explained to the gentleman on reception that we had dined elsewhere on the evening in question. He adjusted our bill accordingly. Either the server had misheard the room number of the person who had dined that evening - it certainly wasn't us - or someone deliberately quoted a room number to get a free meal, and we were the unlucky ones. Is there any way this sort of thing could be avoided?
- Marianne (7/5): We enjoyed our visit, the hotel was clean and comfortable. - Clean and comfortable. Breakfast - good selection, well cooked. Good menu for evening meals. Water kept going off in shower, and very slow in sink, most electrical sockets not working, extension lead provided near television was good.
- Jenny (6/5): Pleasant -
- Tatiana (9/5): Superb - Convenient to ferry port & town centre, quiet & spacious rooms, breakfast & dinner options, Town bus service outside door, taxi drop off The rooms were overly warm, but Lerwick did enjoy some unseasonably warm than usual weather during my stay in early October for SWW 24
- Marcia (8/5): Very helpful staff, pleasant room - Location great for getting to and from ferry, but very long walks into town. Breakfast was the same thing everyday. Would have liked some variety, especially different pastries. But the staff was very attentive and kind.
- Allan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Smith (4/5): Could do better, The Shetland Hotel - Available Room/contents smelt damp
Staff stood in restaurant talking about their travels and other staff throughout meal
- John (8/5): Very good -
- Geraldine (10/5): - Receptionist went above and beyond when I developed a cold and generally feeling unwell. She was very approachable and kind. Couldn't find fault with any of the staff members.
- Tanneth825 (1/5): It's simple - Don't book to stay here!!!!! - There was only two positive about this hotel and that was the cooked breakfast which was always freshly made and tasted nice. We had this included in our stay. Had it not been we would likely not have paid to give this hotel any extra money due to our experience. The second was the bed linen (sheets) were clean - apart from the cover which is mentioned below and photo included. This hotel is certainly in need of renovation. We booked a suite which consisted of double bed with an archway into a seating area. What we got was very different. We got a room with a connecting door to what appeared to be another room which had a separate access to the corridor which had multiple chairs, tables, TV with fake plants in front of it. The smell of damp and had the atmosphere of where someone had died - quite what I would imagine a funeral home to smell like. Issues with our room were as follow:
* A bed which squeaked and moved with every movement and felt unsafe to sleep on.
* Bed runner - questionable marks on this.
* Mattress which when you lay on it you could feel the bed base due to the mattress being old.
* A mass of dust behind the headboard - No I'm not picky but you could easily see the dust.
* Wallpaper pealing off the walls - in some areas you could see where they had tried and failed to stick it back on.
* Curtains which were falling off the rail.
* Carpet which had questionable stains on it - Never felt clean enough to walk on without something on our feet.
* Only 4 coat hangers on the rail to hand our clothes up.
* Shelves - 1 had been put in backwards & dusty.
* Unit - Missing the shelves so just the shell of the unit which seemed strange.
* Dressing table - Missing trim on the cupboard door and you put the TV infront of the mirror.
* Condition on the walls were bumpy.
* Door frame into bathroom split.
* Crack in the sink.
* Smell of damp/death in the second room.
* Hotel corridor looked like something from the Film the Shining. Old bowls of potpourri.
* Hotel had scaffolding up around half of the hotel the entire time we were there with work men shouting.
We spoke with management however they could not see what was the issue with our room and appeared to be a language barrier. If you would like any toiletries e.g. new towels, toilet roll and soap you had to pick this up from reception where it was stacked in the corner.
- Brian (5/5): It's clean and fully functional but staff maybe let down by old decor when compared to prices - Staff were pleasant and attentive. Food and service in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was very good. Room was clean on arrival. Room was a good size. It's a big hotel and the decor is stuck in the 80's/90's. I felt hotel was a bit dark, grim and dated. Rooms can be stuffy.
- Fred (8/5): The hotel appeared a little 'tired'. However, the food, staff and amenities made up for it easily. - The service from the staff was always with a smile. In the restaurant, the food was of a good quality for evening meal and breakfasts had a large choice. It had all the amenities that you would expect of a 3 star hotel and I believe it is good value for money.
- evthebigeasy (10/5): Welcoming and friendly place to stay in Lerwick - Just completed a 4 night stay in Shetland and we found the Shetland Hotel to be a lovely place to stay. Yes, it is not a brand spanking new hotel but the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful (kudos to Jane and the team) and we enjoyed the food and service so much in the restaurant that we chose to eat there each night. Some of the better value for money meals in our entire time in Scotland. Room was also spacious and the bed comfy.
- Donna (10/5): Great service, great food and helpful staff. - Very clean and the free breakfast was wonderful. Service was superb. Bathroom door was hard to open.
- EstherP1882 (8/5): Good location for ferry - Very comfortable hotel with nice size rooms, nicely polished furniture and updated bathrooms. Rooms are serviced on request and the supplies you need (shampoo, towels, toilet paper, tea ,cookies etc.) are available at a table across from the reception desk.
Their restaurant is good and our group ate there two nights. There were favorable reports on the lamb.
The ferry terminal is across the street, so some rooms (like mine) are blocked from harbor views due to that building.
- Leona (6/5): Pleasant -
- Dennis (10/5): Exceptional -
