Don’t think the filter was working very w - Staff are fantastic, friendly and so helpful Dogs being allowed to roam around, dogs laying on the seating, dogs swimming in the pool, dogs scrounging food when we are trying to eat a nice meal

• Friedrich (9/5): - We stayed in one of the family cabins with our two young kids. We loved the eco-friendly design, the fun common areas with the swimming pool (a big hit for our kids) and the very friendly staff. We had a great stay! Asante sana!!

• Yannic (9/5): Beautifully in touch with nature, but expensive cafe - Absolutely beautifully done lodge where you'll feel close to nature. All facilities worked great and below is a small beach with bioluminescent plancton. The dorm is extremely good value for what is offered. All staff were lovely as well. The lodge is a bit far from the city center and the shared kitchen is a bit limited in its equipment. It seems that the goal is to have people dine in the restaurant/cafe, which is beautiful but also fairly pricey.

• Pia (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay at Distant relatives very much! We extended our stay several times, it was our favourite place to stay during our long trip. The architecture of the whole property makes you feel comfortable and we found it quite inspiring. The team was always friendly and welcoming and we met lovely people and we enjoyed the sunsets at the beach where you can walk down in a few minutes. We really can recommend a stay!!:)

The place itself is very friendly with a lovely pool, great restaurant and access to nature and a lovely beach on the estuary with amazing bioluminescent plankton!

• Sita (8/5): Great, with a few glitches. 😊 - Gorgeous location, lovely vibes. Staff generally very kind. Creative beautiful shared areas When I arrived i unexpectedly brought a friend to stay in the private room. When I booked the room on booking it said the price is for two people- although I just put one guest on there, as i expected to stay alone. They then told me I would have to pay almost double the price if I wanted to have my friend stay, despite showing them that the price is always listed for two people on booking. The receptionist (guy) was not helpful and in the end my friend left cause it was too expensive for us and seems very unfair and opportunistic to try to charge double when I showed proof of the price always remaining the same for one or two people and that it’s listed as a price for two people.. Also no mosquito nets on the windows and holes in the mosquito nets made it quite uncomfortable. Still loved the place though. 😊

Elegí como "habitación" la tienda de campaña y fue más que suficiente, ya que quieres pasar todo el día en las maravillosas instalaciones y en el recinto que te ofrece este hotel. El ambiente insuperable, conoces gente de todo el mundo y destaca el respeto, la amabilidad y las ganas de disfrutar de esta experiencia, tanto por el resto de huéspedes, como de las personas trabajadoras. En definitiva, se crea una comunidad muy bonita.

Polite and well trained staff. Nice bar and good food at the restaurant. Very good music and playlist, love it .. I would provide containers for the common fridge in the share kitchen. Would be nice to have those fridges a little more organised.

• Alice (2/5): Would Never want to Ever have to go back. - Being surrounded by Nature. Even though you could not enjoy much of it as the location is so noisy. Room was extremely dirty from the bathroom, floors, mosquito net all were layered in dust to varying degrees. It was also absolutely noisy. The hostel insists on throwing parties and karaoke nights every night regardless of whether there are guests who would prefer not to participate. Could barely sleep from a combination of loud road noise, noise from the staff area and loud music. Went into the lodge sick with a stomach bug, left with a migraine. Worst serviced stay experience of my life.
• Markéta (10/5): - Nejlepší ubytování jaké jsme kdy měli. Personál naprosto úžasný, jídlo dokonalé stejně jako velký výběr drinků. Nádherné prostředí a příjemný bazén. Miluju! Jediná pláž by se dala vytknout, raději jsme byli u bazénu. Na pláži stanují místní kteří vám nedají pokoj, ale to už je tím, že je to mimo areál.

This place is something special — created with heart, creativity, and deep respect for nature. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed by the beautiful zero-waste furniture and the eco-friendly design. Many of the pieces are handcrafted from recycled and upcycled materials, giving the whole space a unique, artistic soul. You can feel that everything here has a story. But what makes this place even more exceptional are the people. The staff are incredibly kind, open, and helpful — always smiling, always ready to make your stay even better. There’s a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home instantly. The beach nearby is simply stunning. Soft sand, warm ocean, and breathtaking sunsets. Steve can take you out on his boat for a magical sunset ride — watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink over the water is an experience we will never forget. And the food? Absolutely delicious! Everything tastes fresh and full of flavor. The pizza deserves a special mention — honestly, one of the best we’ve ever had! These were wonderful days that felt like they could last forever. The kids fell in love with the swimming pool, the kittens wandering around, and even the monkeys jumping playfully through the trees. There was always something exciting happening, yet the whole place still felt peaceful and relaxing. Distant Relatives isn’t just a place to stay — it’s a feeling, a community, and a little paradise you’ll want to return to again and again. Absolutny everything was awesome!

• Vanessa (10/5): Unterkunft für Tier- und Naturliebhaber in atemberaubender Umgebung - Die Lage ist unglaublich. Direkt am Kilifi Creek gelegen, umgeben von einem dichten Wald. Die Poolanalage lädt zu jeder Tageszeit zum Verweilen ein. Das Personal ist zuvorkommend und hilfsbereit. Wer ein naturnahes Erlebnis sucht mit guter Ausgangslage für Ausflüge an der Küste, ist hier genau richtig. Das Essen und der Kaffee waren fantastisch! Mit dem Besuch von Affen in seiner Hütte sollte man definitiv rechnen! Wir würden sofort wieder kommen. Die Matratze war für meinen Geschmack etwas zu weich, aber mein Rücken hat sich schnell daran gewöhnt. Warmes Wasser gab es in unserer Hütte nicht, hat uns aufgrund der Hitze aber gar nicht gestört.

• Dunja (7/5): - Lage in der Natur. Liegen am Pool. Dusche unter dem Bambus. Nähe zum See und zum Village. Kostenloses Wasser. Geteilte Toiletten. Überteuerte Preise im Restaurant. Abgeschieden, daher auf Taxi angewiesen. Einfach ausgestattete Zimmer ohne Sitzmöglichkeit. Viele Aktivitäten nicht mehr möglich.

• Nadine (10/5): - Da haben erfahrene Backpackers einen wunderschönen Ort geschaffen, der kein Bedürfnis und keinen Wunsch offenlässt. Durchdacht bis ins Detail, traumhaft gelegen, unglaublich großzügige Räumlichkeiten, ein schöner Strand in unmittelbarer Nähe, wo man sich von engagierten Locals sogar bekochen lassen kann. Fast könnte man dort bleiben wollen und vergessen, dass man sich in einer Bubble befindet. Aber das soll man auch mal dürfen. Es gibt KEINEN HAKEN. Sogar die Mehrbettzimmer sind top, und wenns heiß ist vermutlich auch die gescheiterte Übernachtung.

• albab94 (9/5): Paraiso en Kilifi - Todo el lodge está muy cuidado, con un montón de detalles para que te sienta como en casa. La zona de chill-out y la piscina son paradisiacos, la comida del restaurante está muy buena, y la cercanía a la playa es una maravilla. Hay pocas duchas compartidas (solo 2), por lo que a veces hay que hacer cola para ducharse. La comida es un poco cara para la zona Sin embargo, es solo por comentar algo. El sitio realmente vale la pena.

You have to take a taxi or boda (motorbike) to get to the city. The kitchen could be bettwr equiped. The restaurant is too expensive, they should propose as well local food, not only italian.

• Rahman (8/5): Impressive place but there are some limitations. - It’s amazing how nature blends in with this hostel. Rooms are very well designed and secured with a keycard lock which is great for security. Bed was comfortable and the place was kept well cleaned throughout. The pool is decent and you can easily walk to the beach from the hostel which is truly impressive. There was no lockers inside the room, even though the room is secure with a keycard lock but still a locker inside the room seems to be necessary. The food and drinks at the restaurant/bar is pretty expensive and there isn’t any option nearby to have food so you’re kinda locked in to eat there. The quality of the food is decent but they should offer more affordable options for backpackers.

Like what many people have already stated in the reviews, there are many bugs and mosquitos in the rooms. Some mosquito coverage on the windows would be great. Shower was awful: very cold and water smelled bad. Also a big negative for us was that there is no breakfast included. The menu is not that cheap of a deal so a bit unfortunate.

• Konstantinos (10/5): - Amazing hostel, cheap, in a nice area, pool and bar were first class, nice concept also. It is a bit far from everything so you need 30' walk or a boda boda to anywhere.
• Lina (6/5): - Sehr nahe am Creek, gut um die Biolumiszens zu sehen. Ich empfehle auf jedenfall eine Bootsfahrt zum Sonnenuntergang sowie ein Abendessen bei Lagerfeuer am Creek-Strand. Dies wird von Jugendlichen aus dem Dorf angeboten. An unserem ersten Abend war bis 22 Uhr ein Jam mit einheimischen Musikern. Am schlimmsten war, dass unser Zimmer (Bamboo) von Bettwanzen befallen war. Wir hatten Stiche am ganzen Körper. Am zweiten Abend war eine Party. Bis 2 Uhr war die Musik sehr laut. Dies haben wir auch erst nach Ankunft erfahren. Das Essen war in Ordnung, aber nichts besonderes. Die Kissen der Lounge am Pool sind wirklich in die Jahre gekommen und äußerst unbequem. Man konnte kaum drauf sitzen

Toen ik aankwam was er een concert gaande in het hoofdgebouw en veel mensen waren aan het dansen en veel gezelligheid. Wat je verwacht bij een backpackershostel. Het matras lag niet lekker, was ingedeukt in het midden. En voelde niet hygiënisch. Ik wil toch het voordeel van de twijfel geven en daarom een positieve beoordeling

• Marc (9/5): Great gem with great vibe for all types of travelers. - Great atmosphere, chilled vibe, friendly staff, great food, pool table, pool, chill-out areas, bike rental => it really is a great backpackers that works for youngsters, friends and couples alike. Very solid pick and one of the best I‘ve ever seen! That’s how I‘d want a backpackers to be designed and run! Important to know and clearly stated: it‘s a 10min boda/tuck-tuk drive away from the ocean. You will need to move for outside entertainment/food, which still puts this place at the top of its/my game!
• Dreams Manifest (10/5): Distant Relatives is a soulful, grounding stay that blends eco-living, culture, and community in one - • The property feels like a mini African village—earthy, beautiful, and rooted in community, but with all the modern comforts. • Friendly, welcoming staff who genuinely added to the vibe. • A full week of engaging activities like live music and dance classes that made it easy to connect with others. • Super comfortable beds—some of the best I’ve had while traveling in Kenya. • On-site restaurant with a solid variety of Western-style meals. • A well-equipped guest kitchen that gave me the option to cook and save. • The nearby beach was an unexpected bonus—especially the bioluminescence at night, which was pure magic. • The location is quite isolated—bodas or tuk-tuks are a must for getting anywhere. • The restaurant is a bit pricey compared to local options (but again, the kitchen helps balance this out).

• Katharin (10/5): Friendly, family type hostel with excellent staff and service - perfect place to relac - Beautiful surroundings, pool, staff and room. Food was great. A bit strange to have a shower in the room but not a toilet

• Martakulik (10/5): One of the best places I have ever been! ❤️ - Everything about this place is amazing! Location, forest everywhere you look, swimming pool, drinks, food, path to the beach! Every detail is deliberated - every lamp made od bottle, every bench made of wood, steps made of old tires or swing made of old boat. 1 very small think - mosquito nets on the windows in the rooms would be nice (but no worries - there is a big mosquito net around the bed)

• Susana (10/5): The ambience of this backpackers is really nice. The creek is absolutely gorgeous. The food is also super good. - We loved the ambience. Very positive and friendly. The surroundings and the infrastructure is beautiful, well thought and with sustainability coherence.
