Guest Reviews
- Aelaine (5/5): Adequate -
- Anne (8/5): A basic but pleasant B and B - Breakfast was excellent. The man serving breakfast was helpful and they provided a wide range of items, so much so you are spoilt for choice. The room was warm and the mattress comfortable. It could do with a little TLC, Staff were friendly and helpful. Pillows were lumpy. Situated at the top of a very steep hill. Lot of stairs to the room.
- Baleda (8/5): - La posizione, la simpatia di mr Tapet
- Baleda (8/5): -
- Robin (4/5): Poor. Will not stay again. - A good well cooked breakfast Room small and pokey. Nothing worked properly - plumbing, wi-fi
- Amanda (8/5): -
- Josef (4/5): -
- Marcel (9/5): Wir würden wieder im Glen Orchy buchen - Hervorragendes Frühstück, Scottish fresh cooked breakfast. Sehr gute lage , nahe am Meer und der Stadt.
- Neil (9/5): -
- Eileen (9/5): Great - Breakfast was great and we were very close to the sea and amenities. Great stay and very friendly staff
- Jamy (8/5): - They let us drop our bags off early. But they state the are 15 min walk from the Ferry when it is 30 mins up hill. No way to charge your phone if you don't have an adapter. And they are located at the top of the hill.
- James (3/5): Disappointed - Always warm Bathroom was very dated, shower was cramped and dated, fittings rusty. Tea making facility was only a cramped windowsill. TV etc PAT testing out of date. Missing room vent cover stuffed with toilet roll. We booked a double room and were given a twin
- Julia (10/5): -
- orkhits (9/5): Very good. - Every thing was fine will stay again. Cant think of anything.
- Katherine (9/5): -
- Magnus (7/5): - Frukosten var bra
- Elizabeth (6/5): It was ok for a one night stay but would not book it for longer. - Could not find any info on breakfast timings nor staff to ask. Fried egg v good. The rest had been keeping warm à little too long and had dried out. Lots fresh fruit tho which was good. Evening meal was really good. Room was v quiet. Old fittings but v clean. Thank you. Steps into building and no lift. Had assistance with luggage up to second floor but struggled bringing it back down. Decor generally looked v tired.
- Alex (9/5): Glen Orchy Lerwick - Lovely place, staff couldn't do any more to make the stay pleasant.
Breakfast and evening meal were excellent. Could do with better pillows in the rooms. They were very flat. 😒
- Joann (9/5): -
- Mabon (8/5): - Fantastic food. Wonderful breakfast. Lovely choice of fresh fruit., plus we'll cooked options.
Evening meal Thai extensive menu cooked & served by Thai brother of owner. Proper good perculated coffee. Everything worked - lots of hot water and good pressure in the shower.
Everything just a bit dated.
- Astrid (9/5): I enjoyed staying there - I really loved staying at Glen Orchy House. The staff were extremely friemdly, the breakfast lovely, it was clean - I felt well Just the decor needing a little touch - but it was comfortable and I would go back
- Chris (6/5): Would probably use again if returning to Lerwick - Good bed shower and wifi with ok parking. Useful to have the Thai restaurant. Breakfast ok, but not as good as implied by other reviews. Within a 10 minute walk of the town centre
- robert (8/5): Decent basic accommodation in Lerwick with a Thai restaurant attached. - Run by a friendly Thai lady and family, food traditional basic accommodation . It was all as expected . We had no issues. People complain about poor sound proofing but it’s not full,of f]ravers so who care :)
- Susan (9/5): Folk Festival Accommodation - Excellent hosts.
Great breakfast
Warm rooms My bedside cabinet was broken and handles fell of drawers.
It could all do with being repainted.
- Jason (6/5): - The staff were very nice and helpful. The location of the property was great, short walk down into town. Hotel was also clean. Breakfast selection was good. Very dated furniture in the room and the decor of the room and bathroom very dated and needing a refresh.
The hotel, when people move around is very creaky. You can hear people walking from upstairs, next door and along the corridors it's very creaky. Heating in the room is also an issue. A fan heater is in the wardrobe but no radiator.
- Virginie (7/5): -
- DAVID (8/5): Good stay at a good location. - Breakfast was good but the chance of some Thai food in the evening at the hotel was fantastic. Took me a day to get the heat out of the room as the temperature control didn't turn the radiator or heating off.
- Mauro (7/5): -
- Greg (7/5): -
- Karen (5/5): For a one night stay it was fine - I am not sure how to rate this hotel.
Positive The man that checked us in was great. Extremely helpful, very nice and very polite . He is an asset to this establishment.
Positive our room number 7 , the beds were fine we slept well.
Positive the room was clean
Positive the internet was fine and easy to connect to.
Positive, breakfast was good. Cooked to order. Orange juice would have been good as an alternative to Apple
( it may have been apple cider my husband wasn’t sure ) they may have ran out by the time we got down to breakfast .
Positive is that there is an on-site restaurant which is great especially on a Monday night when most businesses are closed in the town. We did not go down to have a meal but it was recommended to us.
Not so good were the following
The decor of the room is definitely too old. That didn’t really worry me but
If there was one thing I would do immediately is replace the TV in room 7.
A white monitor style, small TV , is probably what surprised me the most. The room being a twin room made it very hard for the person furthest away to see the tv.
I was also a bit surprised by the ‘ information page ‘ in the room stating that any damage to linen or other appliances would result in a fee ( I think 30 pounds
If you’re arriving by ferry walking to the Glen Orchy really isn’t practical. It took us at LEAST twenty minutes to get from where the northlink ferry docks to the main town hub, Commercial St, and the Glen Orchy is another 10 to 15 minute walk up a road depending on fitness level , as Knab road has a pretty decent incline The other consideration is luggage . We opted to leave luggage at the ferry terminal and take just a backpack each as we were only staying one night.
Glad we did as there would have been two flights of steps to get big suitcases up. There could have been a few rooms on ground level but I am not 100% sure of this.
The problem in Lerwick is that accommodation is pretty limited so we were happy to have a room THE TV, please replace the TV to something a bit larger and definitely more modern .
- Katharine (7/5): Good basic accommodation if you get a good room - Second room was in working order. First room had window that wouldn’t close(ground floor), non functioning plug in basin, non functioning light and non functioning TV remote. They decided to change my room which is always a hassle.
- Sandra (8/5): - Really nice hosts, our room suited us just fine, t.v, kettle with tea or coffee, nice bathroom with plenty of hot water, the breakfast was also really good, great selection of fresh fruit, scones, cereal, and did a lovely full English, situated beside town centre, would recommend.
- Melanie (7/5): Comfortable, clean, affordable - It was a convenient location, had on street parking out the front, and an integrated restaurant. Breakfast was also included. Decor quite old fashioned, but it was only for a night before up helly aa so wasn’t a life or death issue.
- Agneta (8/5): -
- King (7/5): Glen Orchy House is well situated, and we were looked after well. - The breakfast was fine. A good selection of cereals and cooked options. Promptly served and tasty. The room was quite small. I had to duck my head under the eaves to get into bed.
- Susan (6/5): Comfortable bed, nice location but interior needs upgrading badly. - Comfortable bed The look of hotel interior badly needs upgrading. No hairdryer in room
- David J W Watt (10/5): -
- Whitelaw (7/5): - The location was good. Great view. No hot food available onsite due to the chef being on annual leave. Our stay was mid March therefore off season.
- Jamie (4/5): Overall property not what I expected and disappointed that food options were so limited. - Flexible re check -in and were able to check-in earlier. Nice view from bedroom window. Restaurant staff on leave - No Evening meals were available and Breakfast was Continental only. Continental was pretty basic with little choice. Lack of Food options should have been highlighted at point of booking and not when we arrived. Availability of other local Restaurants on a Monday night in Lerwick also limited.
- Occhi915 (5/5): Adequate, but overpriced. - The staff were lovely and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel was very dated, it was clean but the overall feel was one of neglect. The bed room and bathroom were functional but the bed was awful. We paid £115 for one night which was massively overpriced, £60 would have been a more suitable price bracket.
- Sheena (2/5): Will not be returning - Breakfast very basic Broken window catch which is a safety issue
Bed sheet was old and torn
TV did not work
Two beds in separate parts of room but only 1 bed light
- Nicky (7/5): Ideal - Location and breakfast No ventilation in bathroom. Towels tatty
- KAREN (6/5): Great views, good location - Nothing special about the breakfast, it was basic Breakfast.
Also website stated airport shuttle bus but there wasn’t one.
Could hear guest snoring in next room
Lots of heavy walking from guests in room above
- Alistair (7/5): Quirky, well run establishment. Doesn't exactly match the "Glen Orchy" image. - Central location. Hard-working staff. In-house bicycle storage. The Thai element was a complete, though not unpleasant, surprise. Cash payment for meals.
- Clemence (7/5): Good place to stay in Lerwick - center location - Good location, quiet street but near Lerwick city center and a nice short walk to the knab. The room was big with conformable beds, small toilets/bathroom but enough for 2 ppl.
buffet and cooked breakfast was available
- Woodhouse (8/5): -
- Arne (8/5): -
- Patricia (7/5): -
- Rachael (9/5): -
- William (8/5): Good value budget hotel overlooking Lerwick. - The hotel also hosts a Thai restaurant that has excellent food at a very good price. The beds were comfortable and clean and the staff was very helpful. A chair in the room would have been nice but I'm not sure how it would fit. The location of the hotel on Knab Road near the top of the "knob" should have been a hint that it was a medium strenuous walk uphill from downtown. (not a criticism of the hotel, more of a criticism of my stamina)
- William (1/5): I wouldn't stay again. - Bed was small, narrow, hard and the duvet was terrible. Breakfast was good on quantity but tasted of poor quality cooking materials. Shower was old and sub-standard. The television cabling up the wall looked amateurish. The whole place could do with a refurbishment. Looked like something out of the 70s, not what you would expect nowadays.
- Marie (4/5): Fabulous staff and food, dated and tired hotel which is a shame - The staff and the food were excellent. Such lovely accomodating staff, friendly and helpful.
The food was phenomenal, especially the evening meal (Thai food).
The ability to leave luggage before and after stay. The rooms were exceptionally hot, too hot to sleep. Even with a fan (which was noisy) it was too hot.
The hotel was quite run down and dated. It was clean but things were tired, frayed towels, yellowing on shower curtain. Bath that only functioned as a shower tray rather than a bath.
The rooms were not serviced daily. No replacement milk, tea bags etc. no toilet paper replaced etc.
- Michael (8/5): Enjoyable week, thankyou - Breakfast great value; comfortable beds We were very happy with the accommodation; our problem, not Glen Orchy's, was being at the top of a hill
- Christopher (10/5): Comfortable,quiet,friendly host. -
- Gordon (7/5): Enjoyed and will stay again next time 😁 - Rooms good, breakfast was excellent Had to change rooms due to being woken up by something wrong with the heating system, but got changed no problem with understanding staff,
Eating areas could have been cleaner.
- david (10/5): Welcoming, peaceful and relaxing. - Very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. All staff were friendly and helpful. There is a Thai Restaurant and small bar area. The food and drink was exceptional and service very welcoming. Excellent full house breakfast too.
- Elisabeth (9/5): great stay, we will recommend - Very cosy and friendly.
With less wind next time (Amy storm was there) it will be perfect :D
- Pat Field (10/5): -
- Elizabeth (6/5): -
- Graham (10/5): Host and staff were wonderful, hotel interesting and comfortable. - Breakfast wonderful including cooked breakfast. Tasty Thai food available for purchase at night if desired. All was good in my view. While the hotel is towards the top of a hill, it is close to a great lookout for seeing the ferries and ships come and go. It was comfortable and friendly with its own parking behind.
- Lara (8/5): -
- Susan (6/5): Overall not terrible but if I come back to Lerwick I will look elsewhere. - Location was fine, it was a long walk to town downhill but even longer coming back up. We rented a car so we could get around comfortably. Young person at the check in desk was delightful. We caught the last days of the Wool Festival which was fun. Loads of interesting sites in Shetland, we went on several car day trips to Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, Crofthouse Museum, Lunna House, St Ninian's beach, Unst Heritage Centre, a Viking settlement with replica Viking long house and long boat, and Scottish spaceport, SaxaVord at the very northern tip of the most northly Shetland island. I asked a few times about how gluten free the breakfast was and I was told I could be accommodated but I feel that there wasn't an understanding by the server of how the food was actually being prepared. I ended up bringing my own food after spending the first few days with bad tummy issues (I'll leave it at that). Beds were comfortable enough but strangely the mattresses were not kept in place on the bed box... they kept slipping around like they were on ice. I found this very odd. Also, can I just say that it drives me a bit crazy that most places in Britain don't have top sheets. Just the bottom sheet and a duvet cover that doesn't stay put. I know, that's a me issue, but still...

- Kat (6/5): - Gullig personal.
- Lorraine (8/5): - Lovely big house near central lerwick. Our heating wouldn't come on. So was very cold.
- Dorthe Dalby (7/5): - Jeg kunne ikke lide at man ikke kunne få låst sin bagage inde, i perioden indtil man kunne tjekke ind. Man kunne stille den i loungen eller receptionen, men den var uden opsyn.
- paul (10/5): -
- Mary (8/5): Comfortable hotel with a great restaurant. - It was comfortable, warm and stylish.
Very friendly, warm staff.
- Dawn (7/5): -
- Read (8/5): -
- Robyn (6/5): It was okay. - It was in a good location It was dated. Really needs to be freshened up. The bathroom needs updating. Sadly, the food was not the best.
- Patrick (8/5): Séjour agréable, établissement bien tenu, valeur sûre à Lerwick - Accueil, situation, petit déjeuner, prix correct. Je ne vois pas.
- Gavin (6/5): Location great facilities need work and organisation in restaurant - Location Standard of room
- Elizabeth (7/5): Very friendly helpfully staff but room needed up grading the Thai food was excellentg - The staff were very helpfully and friendly couldn't do enough for you Thai food was excellent The room was badly in need of upgrading and shabby but must say very clean
- Richard (4/5): - Location. Tired Hotel with little going for it apart from being in Lerwick. Rooms hot (window only open slightly), small and paper thin walls means you hear everything. Bathroom very dated and poor quality. Bed very basic and not comfortable. Poor value for money.
- Chris (8/5): -
- John (8/5): a very happy stay in Shetland - Excellent breakfast, friendly staff, it was clean and warm. The room was not large, but we didn’t spend a lot of time there a bit more space in the room would have helped
- Arnstein (9/5): -
- Nicholas (8/5): Good location (although at top of small hill), convenient for buses & town centre. - Excellent breakfast. Very good evening meal (Thai). Almost too hot - had to open the window to let some air in!
