Guest Reviews
- Misty (8/5): - Great location Needs some updating
- Grady (10/5): We booked this place for our nephews graduation due to it being the cheapest in such short notice but boy was it a deal - Was very quiet and peaceful as we stayed along with great facilities pool spa sauna pool tables air hockey and close to everything That I had to go home đ
- Fore (8/5): -
- Puckett (10/5): Great - The staff was very friendly and it was very clean.Alot of activities to keep you busy and the room was very relaxing. The lighting in the room could have been little more brighter
- Fore (8/5): -
- Maksym (10/5): Wow đ - Super Snowboard đ

- D (9/5): Wonderful place to stay, as long as one sleeps with earmuffs. - Indoor pool, hot bath and sauna. Large activity area for families. Proximity to local sights, landmarks, restaurants and things to do. Old building makes the hallways transmit too much sound. Sauna was not hot enough.
- Renea (10/5): -
- Lisbeth (1/5): Fue una mala experiencia, un señor nos echĂł del hotel el 30 de diciembre 2025 a las 11:30 pm, porq tenĂamos una mascota - La recepciĂłn El mal olor de la habitaciĂłn,
- Santos (2/5): - We checked out after only one night (we had booked for 4) due to strong chemical fumes and a mold odor that caused headaches and allergic symptoms. We also found an insect in the room. We almost couldn't sleep due to the smell and the allergic reactions it caused, even though we had the windows open.
Despite reporting the issue immediately, the property refused to reimburse and Booking.com was unresponsive, with unfulfilled promises, multiple dropped calls and no resolution. Disappointing experience and poor handling of a legitimate health concern.
- Kimberly (7/5): Not bad overaÄșl - No breakfast served. It did the job. Wish front lobby was open sooner than 8. Our blanket had old blood stain on it
- Luke (4/5): Not worth it. - Location was decent. Thought Iâd reserved a room with 2 beds based on the booking.com pictures and descriptionsâŠ.only had one bed. Furniture is old and outdated. Musty smell throughout. Noisy footsteps from people in room above. Highway noise on our side of the building.
- Mahmudul (5/5): Need renovation but good location. - Location was great. Plenty of parking available. Price was reasonable. Nice view from the hotel. Room needs upgrade. Very old furnitures. Decoration is from 80's. No food available. Have to buy even coffee to use in the room.
- Kristina (10/5): -
- Renea (10/5): -
- James (10/5): -
- Brandon (6/5): - Lobby..pool area Rooms very dated, very small. Management very rude!
- David (8/5): -
- Pope (10/5): - The heated pool was fantastic! Nothing!
- MICHAEL (8/5): - The property is old and dated, but was nice. They have an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, with a great view of the mountain. The lobby is nice, and the grills outside were nice because of the garden area.
- Jessica (10/5): - We will definitely be staying here again in the future! The rooms were great for our little family of 4 (the bed comfort isn't what I'd rave about, but the size of the rooms, and the kitchenettes were really nice). The pool area was really nice. Parking was easy. Driving distance to so many amazing places! The saunas didn't turn on, but that was the only bummer during our short stay. Definitely recommend for a trip to the area!
- Richard (10/5): - No pets, stove, fridge, microwave, fully furnished kitchen. Rec room, indoor pool, hot tub, sauna. Laundry and easy check in. We would stay here again if we go to this area again!
- Whit (6/5): - The location is great and the room was clean. The cobwebs and bugs around the secondary entrances are a little bothersome. Some updates to linens and room decor would go a long way.
- john (8/5): - Older mid 70s interesting past glory days after talking with staff. Mainly now a time share complex. Rooms where clean not much changed its been a long time that i got a real room key. And a rental dvd list.
- Raymond (4/5): - As a rule I hate full wall mirrors.
No bath soaps, hand soaps nor shampoos. No coffee or tea, though there is a coffee maker.
Mattress couild have been replaced, oh, several years ago. Insubstantial pillows didn't help.
Must clean dirty dishes (that's okay) and leave in drainer, though it wasn't provided. Don't forget to take out the trash or it will be an extra cost.
No mention in property description that in effect this is not a place for a one or two night stay unless guests travel with the above.
In sum, it is not a hotel. Or a BnB since there isn't a second B. Maybe a short term budget rental.
- Cheryl (7/5): Clean establishment. - For a older place it was clean. The lobby was huge with a lot of wood. There are no elevators in the hotel so be aware of this if you have mobility issues. Quite a bit of stairs to get to the pool
- Wanda (10/5): -
- Sylvette (8/5): - the room was clean. The mattress was not the best, but OK
- Ashley (6/5): - The property was quiet peaceful, parking and check in and out was easy. We stayed here on our Honeymoon 28 years ago and have been back several times since. However, it could use some updates especially the bed and pillows. Our room AC was not on when we got there so we had to turn it on and cool the room down which took a while since it was July. The floors seemed to be uneven and carpet was dated.
- Allen (10/5): A Pleasant Stay, As Always, At Smoketree Lodge - We had an efficiency room (Queen bed & kitchenette). It is very cozy (not a lot of room) but fine for us. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- John (8/5): - Loved the location. Pool and hot tub was grest. The staff was great and accommodating.
- Theodore (10/5): - The property was amazing! Nice lobby with fun games. Friendly, convenient and reasonably priced for the area.
- Orta (7/5): Good -
- Eva (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (10/5): - Very clean and comfortable! Will definitely book again!
- Brandon (6/5): Needs improvement and has potential - The lobby Dated room, broken water area, lack of communication
- Kelley (4/5): - To begin with we checked in and they said no indoor pool or hot tub. Okay it happens, then no hot water to shower they didn't say anything about that part. It was an okay room but smaller then it looks in pictures.
- Nathan (3/5): Felt ripped off. - Old, needs remodeling. Over priced. Pool and hot tub down. Ragidy pool sticks. Expired snacks and drinks in vending machine. They don't salt the parking lot so when there ice your sliding in vehicles and walking through parking lot.
- Brenda (8/5): - Nice area and good heater
- Donald (8/5): Booking.com was inaccurate with its check in time. Otherwise, great location, fair price, very clean - Clean. Friendly staff. Excellent location for getting to multiple locations and activiies. The pool has never been open when I've visited. A toaster in the kitchenette would be a plus. Also Kleenex in the room would be nice. Note: Booking.com indicated that check in is 4; however, check in is PRIOR to 4. After 4 one has to call security for access!
- Daniel (4/5): - The pool and hot tubs were closed with no warning and we booked just three days ahead. Shower water stopped running in the middle of a shower. Faucet water ran only cold with a weak stream. Old technology tv. Staff was friendly.
- Donna (8/5): Lovely - Stairs were a little tough for older adults. Next time will ask for lower room with less stairs. Pool didn't have stairs. Ladder was tough to get in for older adult
- Sandra (10/5): - The place was lovely and every member of the staff was processional and helpful. I arrived late and the keys were left inside the box. The security guy came out right away when I called. The only problem was the noise from the upper floor Thank you for such a pleasant stay.
- Wilson (8/5): Very good - The location was very good. It was very clean and quiet. I felt very safe there. I will definitely be staying there again. If you stay there, try the Peddlin' Pig Restaurant just up the mountain from the motel. The food is absolutely wonderful. Lots of stairs for aging seniors. Would ask for a more easily accessible room next time. I'm sure we could have gotten one this time; we just didn't request it. No fault of the motel at all.
- Melissa (10/5): - Very nice historic old charming lodge
- Laura (10/5): - This hotel has a lot of character and a lovely lobby area. Very clean and nice.
- Erica (10/5): Exceptional - Location was perfect and the view was amazing. Nothing bad to say
- Renita (8/5): - Eclectic building built in the 70âs. Lots of retro knotty pine paneling, wall of mirrors and real keys.
Price was reasonable, no loud guest. Would stay there again
- Brenda (6/5): - The location is good for Boone or Banner Elk. Room was clean but outdated & carpet old. More hooks or rack in the bathroom would be helpful. Also bring your own coffee, none in the room. If your near the main entrance it's noisy. And the hairdryer didn't work properly.
- Frederick (7/5): Good -
- Danny (10/5): - Quiet, Clean and accessible.
- Carol (10/5): - Well maintained older property very clean, staff friendly and helpful.
- Richard L (6/5): - No air conditioning in the bedroom, very hot, very uncomfortable, the a/c is in the living room and doesn't reach the bedroom.
- David (10/5): - Older property but very, very clean.
- Mary (9/5): Superb -
- John (7/5): Overall it was located close to Sugar Mountain and the bed was comfortable. - There was no breakfast I ate locally.
I liked the very large lobby/game room with the pool table. The Hot Tub was broken and I was on a ski trip so was on my list of things needed when booking.
I did figure out the Sauna which took an hour to heat up to use and legs never got hot.
- Sophia (10/5): - Overall I'm glad we picked this hotel. The staff at the hotel were super nice! The floor in our room was a bit squeaky, but we barely heard anything from the floor above us. The pool was a very comfortable temperature and the sauna felt good. They had a heavy snow early on the day we checked in, so we were glad to have a lower level to park in!
- Leanne (10/5): Wonderful winter wonderland stay - I love the value size and condition of the room. I love the pool sauna and jacuzzi as well as the game room grill and lobby. All the staff were extremely enjoyable to work with. Free laundry etc. Trying to book a spot for next year already. A wonderful experience. I had no complaints everything was wonderful
- Tyler & Stephanie (10/5): - This was a very cute and quite nice stay. There are a lot of stairs if you donât have great mobility that may be a consideration.
- Patterson (10/5): - Employees friendly and helpful. Our unit had a small but complete kitchen. The indoor pool and hot tub a definite plus. I'll go back.
- Breanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Uyen (8/5): - Nice lodge , could use a little renovation but overall good.
- Pamela (2/5): - I was very disappointed in this lodge I booked thru Hotels.com. The condition was terrible we didnât get into our room until late or we would have left then we slept there and checked out the next morning I asked for a refund but was told I would have to go thru hotels.com I am shocked that Hotels.com would have this on their site and it show an excellent rating
- Carlos (7/5): Good -
- Neil J. (8/5): - Enjoyed
- Jerry (8/5): - The Property was a great find for us in what I was looking for. Quiet, peaceful, out of the way, nice, clean, and friendly nice people!
- Jeffrey (10/5): - The room was small and the "kitchenette" was two electric stove top burners with a recirculating hood that was about 10 inches above the burners, but it worked for cooking mac and cheese and pancakes! The room was clean and the indoor pool, jaccuzi, and mega lodge -even with the outdated and some broken arcade machines- was super fun for the family. I would stay here again in a heartbeat to be 5 minutes from Sugar Mountain and Hawks Nest tubing.
- James (8/5): - Quaint little hotel that does the basics well enough for a low price.
- Thomas (8/5): - The property is dated, but clean and a good place to stay. The appliances in the kitchen are literally from the early 80s, but they still work. The TVs are up to date. The room was clean, the pool was clean, but everything was dated. Overall I would stay here again, but not before looking at other options.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (2/5): Needs updating - Lodge could definitely use some love. Smelled like moth balls throughout the facility, amenities noted as âavailableâ were at an extra cost (pool, arcade, etc) or dirty (sauna and hot tub). Beds were dated and uncomfortable, dishes were to be washed by guests so it is unknown if they were actually clean from prior guest or not.
- Casey052406 (8/5): Would happily stay here again - Great location, amenities, value, and staff Room is not soundproof at all, you can hear everything happening everywhere. Our room and a strong musky smell.
- Mary Lou (10/5): - Quaint older building , gives an easy feel and safety because of location. No strange neighborhood nearby.
- Jennifer (8/5): Clean, relaxing place in a convenient location with great staff. - The staff was so friendly. The pool and hot tub were in good condition and a great way to relax in the evening. The floors squeak really bad so it was impossible to walk around and be quiet while others rested.
- Melody (9/5): Superb -
- Tina (10/5): - The property was dated, but that added to the charm! Very cozy, mountain feel with clean rooms and very clean indoor pool and hot tub. Also had a lot of things to do in the lodge (pool table, air hockey, foosball, video games). We'll definitely return when we're in the area!
- stansfield (8/5): - This was a nice place to stay in. I didn't like it that sometimes there was no staff there, which is rather strange. But the rooms had stuff for cooking, a stove.
- Shelley (7/5): Good value - Room was a good size and appreciated having a full kitchen. The queen bed was old and hard. The pull out couch was also old and hard and uncomfortable for my 11 year old niece. The location is great in between Banner Elk and Blowing Rock and close to the parkway. Beds were old and extremely hard. There was a dirty washcloth hanging over the shower curtain when we arrived.
- Roy (8/5): - The check-in process wasn't good. Site said check-in was after 4. Got to the lodge and after looking around quite a bit found a sign that said checking in after 4, call security at a number.
- James (9/5): nice staff, helpful; everything worked in kitchen and bathroom - the kitchenette allowed much more flexibility for having simple meals we could prepare
the building and decor were classic, old but cozy mattress was pretty worn
- Richard (9/5): Nice Mountain Getaway - The room was nice and comfortable. The kitchenette was an excellent touch when you don't feel like going out to eat. The pool and jacuzzi were great for unwinding after a long day. Overall, it's a really nice place that won't break the bank. It's not 5 star fancy, but doesn't pretend to be. It's charming and rustic, and a great place to relax and unwind. There are only a few minor things, and I only mention them for information only. These were not complaints worthy of mentioning.
There were used soaps left in the shower, no biggie. The DVD player didn't work properly. Still no biggie. The only thing that is worth mentioning is one weird incident. We left for the day and locked up. We left the "no service/do not disturb" sign on the door, as we didn't require anything. When we returned, our door was shut but no longer locked. We did a quick inspection and didn't find any of our belongings messed with or missing. What we did find missing was a single, clean pool towel. We had two when we left, one used and hanging up, and one fresh and folded on the nightstand shelf. The one on the shelf was gone. Nothing else seemed to have been messed with, other than not re-locking the door.
Not a complaint, but an observation... the entrance can be a little hard see if you aren't familiar with it.
- Barbara (10/5): - Lovely stay, everyone we ran into was very kind, very quiet, and beautiful views!
- Vangaasbeck (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kirk (6/5): Pleasant -
- Amy (9/5): Superb - The jacuzzi and pool It could use a little updates
- David (7/5): Good - The room was almost like a mini apartment. Great facilities in the room and the indoor pool and little jacuzzi was lovely As someone who doesnât drive it was sometimes difficult to get food in my room. There was a snack and drink machine but maybe a small onsite store could have made it a bit easier?
- Megahan (8/5): - Hot tub, quiet, nice staff
- William (10/5): - Great place cute rooms really reasonable difficult to get it n out of and water in room has mind of it's own still 8 out of 10
- Kathy (6/5): - Parking area was small. Had an F-150 but still had to maneuver in and out of a tight lot. Checked in after 4 so had to contact security. We're on vacation but found we had to naintain our own trash, towel exchange and meals. Only dinner places close by. Nothing for breakfast and only gas stations for shopping.
- Jenni (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (10/5): - Excellent value not luxurious but suited our needs.could hear people walking around above us but otherwise comfortable and clean
- Andrea (10/5): - There weren't any restaurants that would deliver..that's the only bad thing I can say..we loved it
- Andy (6/5): Pleasant -
- tera (6/5): Good enough - Hotel was in a good location for what we were doing.
Room was from the 80's, not necessarily a bad thing.
The shower took awhile for the water to heat up, pressure was low. No shampoo, so had to go buy some.
There was a sky light in the room. Bed was comfortable. It was a no frills type of place. Good enough to rest after our adventures
- Lisa (6/5): - It is a very old lodge in need of updates but the staff was super friendly. Ground floor rooms were a bit musty but everything was clean with extra towels and blankets in the closet.
- Tara (8/5): - The room was clean and neat and very convenient as it had the kitchenette. The only two complaints I have which arenât really significant, were the window unit blows at nearly ceiling level, so the room was somewhat difficult to keep cool. The other was that you have to remove your own trash, the garbage bin was easily accessible but I was not able to reach the top to open to dispose of the bag (luckily there wasnât much at all) so I had to take it with me and find elsewhere. However the pool was great and the view of Grandfather Mountain was amazing. I would stay here again, but definitely ask how I could remedy the garbage situation.
