Guest Reviews
- John (2/5): Hat the heck? - The website allowed us to book. but upon arrival we were greeted by a sign indicating that they were closed for business. What the heck? Then I spent over 30 minutes on the phone with hotels.com only to be told in the end that they could not guarantee I wouldn't be charged. Again, what the heck?
- Yurieski (2/5): - Muy malas condiciones nada con lo que se dice del hotel
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The on line image for Dalem's Chalet looked quaint but current. I could swear a continental breakfast was advertised, and that the room description included coffee maker. Well the Dining hall is clearly out of business, there was a coffeemaker in the room but no coffee fixings [ 4 packets of instant tea and some sugar], Ice lived in a cooler on a patio table with a handlettered sign saying "ice for drinks". Lightbulbs are energy efficient led, so somewhat dim; the exterior sign was not illuminated at all on a dark turn off [I arrived at 9pm], the exterior stairs and parking lot had no working illumination either so it took me a while to figure out where the office actually was. The room was very cold, the décor clean but distinctly shabby, I could hear my neighbor snoring through the wall. Bottom line, this was probably a cute place once upon a time but it's fallen on hard days; NOT basic contemporary accommodation for the price, by what I would consider "easy traveler" Motel 8 and Red Roof type standards. That said, the place was scrupulously clean, the desk guy personable and nice, the room warm once I turned up the thermostat, everything there did work, and the bed was adequately comfortable.
- Vladimir (2/5): Not very happy - The lady, I suppose she was the hotel owner, was very friendly, but there were some big issues. We booked a non-smoking room. Despite of this, we were given a SMOKING room, which was stinking like a dumpster. Sound isolation was very poor. We heard everything what was going on upstairs: TV and walking half a night. Internet didn't work.
- Alison (8/5): - The room did look like a chalet with lace curtains and exposed wooden beams in the room. The design is a bit dated, but clean. It was a good place to stay for a night. Breakfast was not included. Best of luck Miss Ursula.
- Brogren802 (2/5): - Having people ask us if we had any marijuana for sale after pulling into the parking lot. We hadn't even been there a full minute and this had already happened.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very dated! Looks like 70’s! Furnishings, lamps, phone, door lock !
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very unique but in need of repairs
The owner was a lovely 😊 LADY that appeared to be doing her very best with not much support
The flowers 💐 were absolutely beautiful and the owner was so kind and had lovely painted furniture from Germany and the Alps area that I recognized and really appreciated seeing. The room was beautifully decorated in a German type manner which I greatly enjoyed. The owner appeared to be an elderly lady trying so hard to do her very very best with wonderful manners. I wish her very well in her endeavours
We appreciated her kindness and her exquisite manners.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - They do not accept Expedia or other outside arrangements. Need to deal with them directly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very old - but had a hairdryer and a small flat screen TV
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This was not what i expected. Turned around and left immediately
- Daniel (8/5): Ski jumping -
Good
- Verified traveler (6/5): Dalem Chalet stay - The property site information is not updated. Restuarant is closed and the pool and excercise area are outdated or closed.
Owner is ederly and challenging to communicate with, she was gracious and pleasant.
Property is very dark at night, needs more entry and overhead lighting.
Room was clean and functional, with an old world european decor.
Price was reasonable for what is provided.
- kimberly (8/5): Decent little spot - I stayed at the chalet because it was the most affordable place I could find in the hour vicinity of a wedding I was attending. The motel is kitschy for sure- they allowed me to check in before the room was cleaned which was a little bizarre, but the owner was lovely. Once the room was cleaned it was fine. The place has the charm of a small family owned motel in VT. Only stayed a night- slept well, had everything I needed. Would recommend for the traveler on a budget- just know not to ask to check in before check in time!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - lady is too old to be running a motel.
She must be 100 trs old
- BlueLady (8/5): - Very spacious and comfortable room, very comfortable bed, updated bathroom, great view, but tv and clock didn’t work. I’d stay here again though. It suited our needs.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed our short stay here. The owner Mrs Dalem is a gem: charming, interesting and passionate about her unique hotel. The king bedroom we had was very spacious, clean, and wonderfully quiet, which suited us perfectly.
The only downside is no meals are offered, but there are restaurants and shops nearby. Highly recommend the Chelsea Royal Diner for a great breakfast!
- M. (6/5): - Overall experience was OK. The walls and ceillings are definitely not soundproof so if you sleep on the first floor or have neighbours, you can hear everything they say. It can be hard to sleep in those conditions.
- Jason (4/5): Better alternatives available for the price - The check in process was fine, cleanliness of the room left room for improvement. No heat available in the room, thermostat did not appear to be working.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The culture and theme of the chalet was very nice, and the lady who checked me in was pleasant. The wooden latch doors are a nice touch.
The rooms themselves were a bit lacking. There were cobwebs in all the corners and a couple of (live and chirping) crickets in the room. I didn't turn on several of the lamps, because you could see all the dirt and dead bugs in them when you did so. The TV was from like the 90's, and so emitted that high pitched frequency when on, and the wifi wasn't strong enough to work. Overall, it was okay, but breakfast wasn't included, and I had to pay (in addition to the initial $100) a $10 resort fee. I don't know what for, as there weren't any other amenities. It wasn't gross or horrible by any means, but not really worth the price, in my opinion.
- John (6/5): - The place served good purpose; a clean comfortable room to sleep while I was out and about during the night and day.
- Sonia (8/5): - The facility was perfect for our needs, convenient to Rt 9 and closer to Marlboro than the comparably priced places on Rt 5. The room was large and airy, with a timbered ceiling. It was possible to open the window to let in the glorious VErmont air. There is air conditioning but it was not necessary, and the WiFi worked very well. The room comes with a coffee maker, the coffee was reasonable, the shower had copious hot water and good quality shampoo.
- Michael (6/5): Average stay - Average stay. Regardless of what the photos show, there is no restaurant and pool needs updating. Room was large and clean. Secluded area.
- Paul (6/5): Older motel with quite dated furnishings & decor. - The proprietor is a nice woman who got me into my room within minutes. Older motel, and decor, tv, etc.
- Melinda (8/5): Charming, Old-World Ambience - I booked this sight unseen for a quick trip with my husband to a nearby town. The chalet was probably very charming in its hey-day but is now a little out of date. But our room was very comfortable in a basic "old world" style. And very quiet. The flats creek TV is very small and we were too busy to need tv. But the WiFi worked great, parking was easy, mattress firm, blankets & sheets clean. We were greeted by the owner, who spoke with a German acent and who was very sweet. I felt like we'd stepped back in time or into a fairy tale dimension, as the room had rustic and antiqueish furniture. The gardens outside are a lit overgrown but must be gorgeous when in bloom. This is a place out of time, but very safe and comfy as long as you don't require "state of the art" decor & tv. My h u stand and I both liked it for our brief one-night stay. If you like quirky charming places, you will like this place.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not what was expected at all. VERY outdated hotel. No restaurant, no pool. Falsely advertised.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not really worth the cheap night - Room was OK. Bathroom was clean and modern but a couple of things bothered us. One, there were flies in the room. Not many but we did have to swat several before we could go to sleep. Each room has a back door to an unlit hallway. When we arrived in the room that door was unlocked and wide open. We closed and locked it, of course. In our second room, the back door was closed but unlocked, so we locked it. When we came back later that evening, the door was again unlocked. Needless to say,we were spooked. We hadn't left anything in the rooms during the evening, so nothing was taken or disturbed, but still. Not going back.
- Judith (4/5): - Once again, the photos of the hotel are very deceiving. The place is in a general state of dilapidation, and very run-down. It looks nothing like the way it is presented in photos. Parking lot is broken pavement, spiderwebs abound, bedding is worn and very old looking, the whole place looks very ramshackle, with broken bicycles and other detritus all over. Very disappointing.
- Jim (4/5): 1960s style without the low price - Would not let my daughter stay at this place when she surprised me for Father's Day.
- Chris (8/5): Unique Chalet Atmosphere - The suites are a unique experience. The newer double rooms are ordinary and don't all get wifi service. First room was clean but had no wifi. 2nd (replacement) room got wifi, but had cobwebs in corners. Tried 3rd time and got one of the romantic Chalet style suites. This had wifi but had to attack the cobwebs myself. Otherwise suite was clean, spacious & romantic with natural timber beams, balcony & wooded setting. Restaurant is closed so no meals - not really a B&B. Pool is closed. But it's not a "canned" same-as-everybody-else chain hotel.
- Kevin (8/5): Charming & pleasant spot though a bit worn - Charming and pleasant enough spot though a bit worn about the edges. The first room I was given didn't have wifi signal and the AC wasn't working but the owner moved me to a new room with good AC and signal. Easy to get to and not far off the highway. Good for a night or two.
- Melissa (2/5): Horror Movie Hotel - Stay away! Worst hotel I've ever been in. Hard bed, no air conditioning, loose outlets, and super thin walls. The place needs SERIOUS maintence work.
- gee (2/5): Worse hotel in a long time - In the last 9 months we have stayed in over 50 hotels and this was by far the worse. Arrived to,have the lady say someone had taken our reservation. She gave us another room but I hope the people that got our original room faired better than we did. The windows rattled when the wind blew....the carpet was filthy....the room had stereo( could hear the tv's from both above and beside us)...floor above squeaked badly..... no ice machine just baggies filled with ice cubes in a styrofoam chest outside the office....very limited tv channels...not enough plugs for the electronics...bathroom floor was dirty...lid of the ice bucket underside was not only sticky and may have had mold starting to grow in it and at 7 am on a Sunday morning the hot water fluctuated very badly. Expedia should review this one. Very sub-standard.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Chalet - Very reasonable, and great staff, but could use a face lift in the rooms. But for the price, as a base just to sleep and go out during the day, it worked well.
- Arthur (6/5): Chalet experience for sure if that is what you lik - Motel was certainly different with the Swiss Chalet design. We looked forward to dining in the restaurant as it looked good on the Internet site. It was closed! This should have been on the site. Price was right but included some strange surcharge.
- Cold Feet (4/5): So many cobwebs, just one spider. - The location to the center of Brattleboro and the low price remain the best things about this place. Uncomfortable bed, but clean sheets; there was no air circulation so sleep was not great. It's not bad for a place to crash and the amenities may be OK if we knew what they were. BUT, there was only coffee in the room (we are tea people), the dining room wasn't available (emergency issues?), there was no info about even where to find an ice machine. It's assumed there was one, since there was an ice bucket in the room. Just a phone book, no Guide to the Town, Where to Eat, etc., Minimal is the operative mode. We got in late (they left a key for us; nice). Wait, 9:15pm is not so late. We left at 8.30 the next day; no face to face with anyone.
And where were the recycling bins?
- Verified traveler (8/5): Needed a place to stay at the last minute - Nice location. No Breakfast included, but there are plenty of places nearby. Room and Bathroom very clean. I was travelling by myself, but this would have been a good room for a family.
- MJ (6/5): Dated but clean and quiet - The Dalem Lodge must have been something in its day, but is definitely dated. Our room was clean and functional and there were only a few other guests, so very quiet and relaxing. The restaurant was closed, but supposedly opening the weekend of May 30, 2015. Dalem's is located near downtown Brattleboro and for this reason, we would consider staying there again.
- Liz (4/5): Not as advertised - We had reserved a room on Expedia at a particular rate. When we arrived the staff said "Oh that's the wrong rate." The actual room charge would have been $30 more than that advertised.
The motel is quite run down and there were only a few cars in the lot (many rooms unoccupied). The manager offered us another room on the ground floor for less the the price we had been quoted and we took the room.
The room was dirty, carpet full of stains, missing tiles on the bathroom floor, dirty sink and smelled musty.
On the positive side the WiFi worked, and the heat worked (it was a chilly evening. The sheet was stained, the bedside table lamp was missing a bulb and the over the bed lamp had filthy shades.
- Scottie (4/5): A special place...at least it was special long ago - This place looked so great. Classic Bavarian Chalet, nice little restaurant. Unfortunately, it seems as though not much has been kept up since the 70's. The restaurant was not open when we arrived on Saturday night, nor was there any breakfast to be had in the AM. The lovely little old lady who runs the place was very sweet and recommended a diner in town. It's super close to the VT Country Deli which is an amazing place to get some fantastic food. It is unfortunately not quite what is advertised.
