Guest Reviews
- Renata.96 (7/5): - - staff: after finding all local restaurants full, the kind host lady prepared us two japanese curries and brought it up to our room - thank you!
- facilities: we got the key and the map to all the local onsen baths which were amazing. the room included bathing robe, onsen towel and a basket also.
- room: traditional japanese style room, clean and comfortable. the shower is an onsen style, which is great.
- location: great spot to see the snow monkey park and bus stops for transfers. - restaurants: we arrived around 19.00 in the evening and there were no restaurants around with availability. we have walked everywhere and were turned away.
- facilities: a beautiful but old house. especially the gas heater in our room was a problem, it smelled badly and it could get quite cold in the rooms.
- cat cat (9/5): quiet and peaceful - I had a fantastic stay here in Nagano. The room was very comfortable, and I had my own toilet with a shared bathroom. The place was quiet, peaceful, and had a very nice homestay feeling. I really enjoyed staying here. It is great value for money and perfect for budget travelers like me. I stayed on the top floor, and there was a lift, which was very convenient. I would definitely come back again!

- Georgia (10/5): Lovely traditional ryokan, great to escape some of the busy cities - The staff were very helpful and friendly. We checked in quite late and they responded to our messages and let us know it wouldn’t be a problem. Great location to bus stop for the monkey park. Added bonus that you get the public onsen key as well as access to onsens on site. We didn’t realise you couldn’t use the onsen key after checkout on departure date. We would have rather known when given the key so we could change our plans to make the most of the most of them as we were only staying one night.

- Noortasha Devi (10/5): - Its so was beautiful - the onsen was amazing. Tatami so comfortable and the front if house was so kind to wait for us even though we arrived late Everything was great! We wished we had stayed longer!

- Hanna (8/5): - Very nice environment and room. Staff were friendly. The room was very cold during the night and early morning.
- Camilla (4/5): -
- d. (10/5): It was a fun adventure! - The heated table with built-in lap blanket and heated toilet seat were divine, since it was mid-winter and cold when we visited.
- Rebecca (10/5): It was a great stay - The location was great. We went to the monkey park in the afternoon, and chilled at the hotel in the afternoon. I was so surprised that there were so many onsen in the area - most of which we could use for free! We will definitely stay here again.
- Lee (8/5): -
- Roberta (9/5): Viaggio nel tempo - L’atmosfera retrò, l’onsen privato Molto carino e ottimo rapporto qualità / prezzo
- Julie (4/5): Overall, I’m sorry to say my stay was uncomfortable. It wasn’t far off camping-level comfort. - Spacious. Clean tatami mats. Sadly, that's about it. The hot spring in the basement is great. It saddens me to leave a bad review for what seems to be a family-run business, but a lot of small things piled up.
- The pillow: you get one pillow the size of your head — tiny.
- The futon: I’ve slept on futons before and enjoyed them, but this one was so thin and worn-out that I woke up with lower-back pain and butt cramps every morning.
- The duvet/blanket: again, old. The duvet kept sliding around inside the cover, so I spent half the night wrestling it into place just to avoid freezing in the morning.
- The heating: no air con (unusual for Japan,I have no idea how they survive summer). Instead, there’s a fuel heater that fills the room with a strong smell of gasoline every time you turn it on. Hello, headaches! It also beeps and sings at random intervals. I don’t speak Japanese, so I had no clue what it wanted from me… and there’s no heating in the corridors either.
- The lighting: the photos make the rooms look bright and inviting, probably thanks to professional lighting. In reality, you get one harsh ceiling light that feels straight out of a hospital. So you’re either “relaxing” in the emergency waiting room, or you’re sitting in the dark. And whether it was off-peak season or an attempt to save on electricity, the place stayed dark and dingy all day because no lights were on.
Japan has fantastic second-hand shops. You don’t need to spend a lot to upgrade the small things: better bedding, a couple of decent pillows, a small bedside lamp. I must admit I felt betrayed by the reviews.

- Douglas (9/5): Great location - Great value. In a nice location. Not even a point against really. If you have a bunch of special requests and questions it's probably easier at a place with more English speaking staff.
- Lia (8/5): Great location for onsens & close to ski resorts such as Shiga Kogen & very comfortable stay - Great location to local bars & eateries. Free access to all 9 public onsens within 10 mins of walking. Private onsen at hotel. Great stay for traditional sleeping arrangements, staff always gave new towels etc. great free parking & quiet area to relax.

- Paula (8/5): Interesting experience in a traditional inn with onsen. - It was a traditional ryokan and it had 2 onsens, one public and one private. The facities were a bit dated compared to others in the area, but a good value for this more traditional experience. The owners were very friendly. The surrounding area was idyllic and a short bus ride to the snow monkey area.
- yonit (9/5): Great village with good othentic atmospher - Traditional stay with nice indoor onsen, the heted tabel is nice, and you get a key to the shibu onsen 9 public onsens, veey close to the snow monkey park, and the village is very otentic and atmospheric Place is a bit old, it was a bit cold, as it was snowing and there is a small heater that turns off after some time, staff speaks little English, public onsens are small and exremly hot
Molto datate e i servizi igienici erano molto discutibili. Non ci sono docce.
- Francesco (10/5): - Positioned in the onsen street A Little bit cold, but with the A/C it was ok
- Salvador (10/5): -
- Guelmine (8/5): -
- Sara (7/5): -
- Carmel (7/5): A little run down but great value. - Location was amazing! The town was incredible. This was good value for the price. Car park was not advised before trip and has challenges locating it. Would have been great to have had this explained before hand.

Scarso riscaldamento in camera.
Stufa a kerosene sta accesa solo 3 ore.

- Andreas (10/5): Unglaublich viel Charme - Unglaublich.
- Luan (7/5): -
- Fran (10/5): - Great location in Shibu Onsen, key to access the public baths and two additional onsen in property make it perfect so you can bath and relax any time you want. Yukata and getta are provided.
The room was spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The tatami was spotless clean and well preserved, feels it was renovated not too long ago. You'll love it if you want to stay in a traditional Japanese room. The hotel itself is old but well preserved so you won't have an issue with noise or facilities really.
The owners are very kind and gentle couple. It was difficult to hang and dry our towels for the next day.
Therw was a very dusty metal object at the back of the room. We didn't know what it was but it took up space and smelled dusty when nearby.
- Alli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Scott (1/5): I'd never stay again and suggest you can find better. - Nothing No showers (I know there are onsens but expected basic facilities), no towels for basic hand drying. Sink and toilet were absolutely filthy (see photos) My pillow smelled strongly of aftershave. Two of us came away with what looked like bed bug bites. A really poor experience.
- Valeria (9/5): Superb -
- Joao (10/5): Exceptional - The quality-price ratio I liked everything
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Leila (9/5): Superb - The owner was very very kind and helpful.
- Robach (7/5): Onsen monkey trip - The location is very good to visit the public onsen and the monkey park. The bus stop is 5 minutes from the property. The property is very dated and lacks a good overhaul. No restaurant in the hotel.
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (5/5): Very pretty fairytale town in winter, 9 onsens around to enjoy. Bus access to Monkey park. - The location is EXCELLENT for two reasons, it has great access to the Snow Monkey park at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, in Yamanochi. Kaneki hotel is in the Shibu onsen part of Nagano, which is one of the stops for the Monkey Park bus. The bus stops at the train station, Shibu onsen and Snow Monkey park. We went in February and there was fantastic snow fall at the time. Shibu has a concentration of 9 public onsens around town, with Kaneki right in the middle of it all. You can collect an ink stamp on a piece of cloth at the front of each public onsen that you visited. The town transformed into a wonderland in the thick snow deposits all around.
The hotel and the town have an old world charm to it, and the room was cold, but surprisingly not too cold due to the paraffin heaters in all the rooms. We had a Japanese style quadruple room for the two of us, which was clean and spaceous with neat tatami flooring. We had no meal option with the room. There's a toilet but no shower or bath. You use the shared bath for washing. Language was a barrier, however they spoke limited english. The Japanese beds were super uncomfortable and I will not recommend it. The floor seating around the little table was also super uncomfortable, but I must say, the electric heating under the mat by the table was very pleasant. We only had a paraffin heater, as the other type of heaters were out of order. It kept the rooms nice and warm, however they do stink up the place with fumes and we woke up with headaches. I left the windows and inner doors open a crack just to ensure we get oxygen.
- Lovlyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zoe (9/5): Superb -
- Grant (9/5): Great location. Room and onsen very good. - Nice large tatami rooms. Indoor onsen very nice.
- Linda (10/5): Lovely experience - Lovely hosts and comfortable room in Shibu Onsen. All info provided including the key to the public baths.
- Quick (8/5): Very good -
- Kealan (6/5): If cleanliness gets fixed will be back for sure - Very authentic Japanese style hotel which is family run. The room was massive, the biggest one I have stayed in. You get access to loads of different onsen which are meant to heal or fix different things. Location is as close to monkey park as you can get. Staff super helpful and kind Cleanliness was very poor in hotel, which was a problem for my girlfriend
- Lissandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yotam (6/5): Pleasant -
- Aoife (10/5): Exceptional -
- Evangeline (9/5): Superb - Lovely place to stay in Shibu, great value for a big room.
- Alisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timur (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mcnamara (7/5): Good pricing and nice place - Love wearing the yukata; access to baths was great; cheap apples at reception Bit small but very valuable for money
- Dovilė (9/5): Superb -
- Nicole (10/5): We had a great time here and would happily stay here again. -
- Nancy (8/5): Very good -
- Jaclyn (10/5): Exceptional - Awesome guesthouse. The owners were kind and friendly. We loved being able to wander the streets and use the public onsens. The room was spacious with a traditional Japanese style bed and table. We enjoyed having tea and spending time in our room.
- Christine (7/5): Great budget rustic authentic stay in an onsen hotel - Great budget rustic authentic experience. Ability to have a private onsen at the hotel as well as the hotels separate onsen. Hint- male side is heaps better than female side. Jealous. Proximity to snow monkeys , onsens and quaint onsen town all great. Not luxurious but rooms large
still great A slightly better pillow would help a good nights sleep - or another small one
- Dylan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional - Great place! Right next to the bus stop if you’re coming from yudanaka station and need to head to Shibu Onsen! the owner was very sweet and helpful even though they don’t know English. They let my store my luggage when I checked out and helped me with the local bus schedule going to snow monkey park!
- Jennifer (8/5): Very good - I got a key to unlock all 9 public hot spring baths. Wonderful. I did all nine twice and got to dress in the traditional dress to walk the street to the baths.
- Benjamin (9/5): Was lovely to stay there had a blast just a couple little things that could be improved but overall was great. Particula - The amenities and the staff were lovely Shower, sink for drinking water, microwave needed, cooking utensils.
- Erica (9/5): Superb - Really good option to access the 9 little onsen town. Quite a bit more affordable than the other places that offer key access but quite cosy and cute. Loved the kotatsu heated table
- Jenny (5/5): Was ok. - It's close to the carpark. Bed was comfortable. We booked 3 rooms and were lucky to get the room with AC where we can adjust heating. The other 2 rooms were using the timer heater and they were complaining that it's not warm enough and they had to wake up every 3 hours to turn it back on. These other 2 rooms do not have hot water from the tap so you'll be brushing your teeth with freezing water. The shared shower in the basement was not very well maintained.
- Johnny (8/5): - Room was cold after the oil heater ran out in the middle of the night. The oil heater was not enough for the whole night during the winter time and the hot water in the sink was not working.
- Valeria (2/5): Very poor - The lift in the building The room was cold, just a toilet and a sink in a room without a shower. The hotel has a privately closed shared onsen with extremely hot water inside the bath and a public onsen which we didn't use. Towels were not provided.
The personel speaks English just a liitle bit and the hotel accepts only cash.
There is no restaurant on site and we spent a lot of time searching for a place for dinner.
In general it was an unpleasant stay.
- Ivan (8/5): hotel need improve the fasilities - onsen some facilities in the room not working well, especially hot water during winter
- Francesco (9/5): Superb - The the room was beautiful and equipped with all the necessity and more (the kotatsu was delightful).
It has 2 onsen bathtubs inside the building, of which one of them can be used privately. You also have free access to several onsen in the vicinity. There is no shower and the wc have no bidet!
The connection was slow and sometimes unstable.
- Eric (10/5): Relax in a traditional Japanese way. - Located in a small town, by the snow monkey park, with scenic streets that captivate the traditional town. Great place to stay and relax at the 9 public Onsen. The hotel also has a private onsen which is great if you’re shy. The staff was kind and explained everything. Looking forward to coming back on my next visit.
- Ella (4/5): A budget ryokan option for anyone looking to stay in the area. I think unfortunately time in Shibu Onsen would be more w -
- Peter (10/5): Quaint and functional. - The hotel itself is quite sparse but functional. The futons were comfortable and you are well located for strolling the onsens. It's about a 1 hr stroll to the monkey park and a half hour walk from the train station.
The hotel provides you with robes, shoes and a key to the public onsens, as well as directions.
No one spoke a lick of English, so Google translate is your best friend. Booking.com should have mentioned that the hotel only takes cash. So be prepared with cash on hand. The nearest ATM is at the Lawson's convenience store next to the train station.
- Darleen (7/5): Basement Onsen - It was lovely to be received with yukatas and geta to use freely and to have our futons ready after dinner.
Abundant narural hot spring water overflows the onsens in the hotel and throughout the traditional village.
I discovered the basement onsen by chance. My fault as I don't know Japanese and as my trip progressed I became proficient with Google translate...do rent a portable wifi from the airport or major JR station.
Japan is aging, and it's apparent away from major cities, so buildings and bathrooms are dated but functional.
Suminoyu onsens are traditional and HOT, and people are traditional, ie. please be respectful and abide by onsen ettiquette.
Support the local businesses and shops. I only wished I would have purchased more goods including yukatas from the shops there (it was the beginning of our trip).
- Cinthyacg (10/5): Hotel with private onzen - Our room was great. Good size with all you need for a pleasant stay. We really appreciate the private onzen because we're a shy couple and this is a must to be done while in Japan. Our hosts speak little English but they make the effort to communicate and be as helpful as they could.
- Bg (10/5): comfortable and convenient home away from home - lovely staff, homey, fabulous onsen on site, excellent breakfast, clean and comfortable
- Felix (10/5): Exceptional -
- S. (10/5): I will come back - They give me the key for the nine baths. Was fantastic! Thank you! It is a little old, but also the baths are old. I was walking alone, no one of the streets... I felt like I am a time traveling... I loved it! But for someone could be unpleasant.
- Umaporn (8/5): Very good -
- Victor (10/5): Exceptional - The owners were very friendly and gave us good advice during our stay
- Singh (8/5): Very good -
- Mccall (7/5): Good -
- Philipp (8/5): Good value for money with access to the nine public baths - Location is great, with exclusive access to the nine public onsens. The private onsen at the hotel is great for couples or shy people. It was relatively cold in the room, with a gas heater that did not really cope with the cold and that stopped automatically despite not reaching the target temperature.
- Lucas (6/5): It is a decent place to rest your head and is in a good location to try all of the little onsen baths. It even has its - It was in a good location near the center of town and the staff was kind to us on arrival. Parking was also available and convenient. Honestly speaking, It is an old hotel and is in need of some renovations. The strong smell of cigarette smoke from the side room wouldn’t usually bother me so much but it was too much. They place was not bad as we were only looking for a place to lie our heads after the baths. But, I think the price was too high for what it was, especially when you compare it to other places we stayed in Japan on this trip which were much nicer for the same price.
