- Stephan (9/5): - A beautiful old Onsen Ryokan right in the middle of the town. Nice big traditional rooms and authentic interior. The outdoor bath was perfect and had just the right temperature. WiFi would be nice to have. Parking can be a bit crowded.
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional :D - Wonderful ryokan with the best staff. I felt really welcomed here and it's been nothing but impressive how staff cared about us.
Also the switch between men's and women's onsen at night was greatly appreciated, so everybody could enjoy both baths. -

- Fay (10/5): Excellent traditional experience of Japan! - The entire ryokan looked and felt really good. The room was beautiful, the food was delicious and the Onsen was so nice and well-maintained. Mari, Tyler and Andy anticipated my every need (even some I didn’t know I needed like booking an in-room Shiatsu massage and a Za Zen session at a temple with the monk!) I loved that it’s been family-run for generations and it was helpful for me that they spoke English as well as Japanese. My time at Kamisei Ryokan was definitely a highlight of my three weeks in Japan. —
- Koen (10/5): Dikke aanrader - Prima personeel

- Vanessa (9/5): Quiet stay in an authentic Ryokan - The atmosphere of the Kamesei Ryokan is warm and quiet as a family of 4 we enjoyed our stay.

- Bohdan (10/5): Great stay in family-run ryokan - Tyler and Marie made our short stay in Nagano prefecture one of the highlights of our trip. I highly suggest ordering the dinner and breakfast option; the food was amazing and unlike anything we had tried before.
- johneD8142GN (10/5): A lovely place to stay - A lovely, quiet place to stay with welcoming hosts, wonderful food, relaxing facilities (the private onsen is awesome), and large rooms. The surrounding town is full of cute and yummy local restaurants and its only a short train ride from central Nagano. We would love to stay here again.
- LilliPilli20 (10/5): Wonderful stay, great accommodation, wonderful food and hospitality - We had a wonderful time with Tyler and Mari. Wonderful room, lovely spaces, the meals were amazing very unexpected and much appreciated. Local, cuisine, fresh produce. The onsen was great especially the outdoor onsen that we sat in and watched while it rained! Tyler and Mari are great hosts picked us up from the train station, responded to all of our questions etc. we felt truly relaxed after a few days in Tokyo. Thank you both very much
- leovan91 (10/5): Authentic family-friendly ryokan - We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this ryokan. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such genuine warmth and hospitality. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a playroom suitable for kids of different age in the ryokan. The food was a highlight of our stay — beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Communication was also incredibly easy as Tyler and Mari-san both speak English. They were always happy to answer questions, explain the dishes, and offer recommendations.
If you’re looking for an authentic ryokan experience with exceptional service, amazing food, and welcoming hosts, this is the place. We would absolutely love to return.

- Maureen (10/5): - The experience was authentic. The meals were incredible and unique. One of a kind experience! It's cold in the winter. Make sure you have layers to bundle up!
- Jari (10/5): A highlight of our family holiday. - Hosts Tyler and Mari were wonderful and looked after us. It was our first visit to an Onsen town and they took the time to explain how to bath in an onsen, wear a yukata and activities around Chikuma. We also decided to include dinner as well as breakfast and both were delicious. Highly recommended.
Also a big thank you for Tyler for going out of his way to post to us a necklace my daughter left in the room. It wasn't straight forward as we were travelling in Japan but Tyler was able to co-ordinate the posting so we could pick it up in Tokyo.
We had such a lovely time and will recommend Kamesei Rykon to all of our friends. It was such a positive experience that I don't have anything negative to say.
- christopheryM5886SK (10/5): Third time at Kamesei Ryokan - Whenever I plan to come to Nagano, I'm always compelled to stay at Kamesei Ryokan. From the warm hospitality of Tyler and Mari-san to the delicious local cuisine, I always have so much to look fondly on when I get back home. And of course the onsen is the best, to put it simply. I hope that when I come back to Nagano, I can finally convince my family to come here.

- 610celiney (10/5): First time staying at Ryokan, wonderful experience! - My husband and I stayed for two nights at Kamesei Ryokan. This is the first time we're staying at Ryokan and doing Onsen so we don't have any clue on what's going to be like. But Tyler and his wife made us comfortable during our stay there. Not to forget how GREAT the breakfast and dinner was. (Please don't forget to get the package for dinner and breakfast, you won't regret!)
- Trevan (10/5): - The owners were really friendly, warm and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable for 4 people. Overall, a nice place to stay when visiting Nagano and we enjoyed our stay here :)
- Yamin (10/5): -
- Jill (9/5): - A beautiful and welcoming stay. We loved the experience and the warmth of welcome extended by the proprietors and the whole town.
- Raigo (10/5): -
- Dutchman00 (10/5): Authentic ryokan experience - My second visit to Kamesei Ryokan was excellent. With its own onsen this ryokan offers travellers an authentic experience, being treated warmly by the owners and staff. Especially for a solo traveler like me that makes all the difference . Besides the onsen bath, the dinner and breakfast are a treat, combined favorite dishes with unique ones. Tyler gave me great tips, like the strawberry farm and mountain side temple in the area. Looking forward to come back next time.
- marthamaet (10/5): Great ryokan experience - Fantastic hospitality! A traditional ryokan experience with onsens. Highly recommend! The room is quite comfortable. And the food is prepared by a professional chef.
- Lucas (10/5): Unforgettable Ryokan Experience - The whole experience made it feel like an immersive traditional Japanese experience. Beautiful decoration, facilities were outstanding and the rooms was amazing.
Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home. Can’t think of anything negative during my stay.

- E4040WUmartink (10/5): A Nice Ryokan With Traditional Japanese Feel Throughout! - Our family absolutely enjoyed this family-run ryokan. The owner picked us up and dropped us off from the local train station. The service, the food, the decor, and the room were all excellent. The down-duvet they used was really warm and comfortable; we were even asking where to buy it. The onsen was not big, well-equipped and not crowded at all. If we had a chance, we would definitely return again!
- Y6180MQwilliamp (10/5): Simply incredible - We had such a wonderful time. Mari and Tyler, as well as their staff are so kind and are always thinking of new ways to bring exposure to authentic cultural experiences. The building is well kept, and you can feel how much they love this place. Every evening it felt like I was introduced to a new room and a new surprise waiting around the corner. The baths are well maintained and so very comfortable. Tip of the hat to the chef, my newly wed wife and I left not a grain of rice leftover the food was so incredible. The price for what you are getting is a superb value, and the town and surrounding location is an absolute delight to explore. We can't wait to be back! You will find it so easy to relax. Much love to you all, thank you for making our honeymoon such a a special experience! Will + Nat
- 2Travelnuts101 (10/5): First time visit feels like invited by a friend to his home. Tyler, the owner welcomed us like an old friend. - We stayed 2 nights and experienced everything that we wished for. Soaked into a garden of tranquility, enjoyed private onsen time, shabu shabu dinner, healthy Japanese style breakfast, and convenient shuttle service. Truly a satisfying experience.
- Somsak (9/5): Worth to stay - Everything No
- Kelisa (10/5): - Staff was extremely friendly. The woman at the front desk (so mad I forgot to ask her for her name) literally called resturants to make sure they were open and offered food I could eat with my allergy restrictions. There are two baths one was outside and one was inside. Both were so nice almost fell asleep inside ! The room was super cute and the traditional bed was nice and comfy. I was scared it was going to be chilly but between the bath, heater, and comforter I slept like a baby :D. They also gave us a free ride to the train station as well as offer free pick up from 3 - 5 pm. Tyler was also had excellent communication via email .
- Chatsamorn (9/5): Will come back - Dinner was amazing. No
- Akira (7/5): -
- Ayse (10/5): Very peaceful and relaxing - Tyler and his wife were very kind and helpful throughout our stay. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with futons, with breathtaking views of the mountains and garden. The ryokan offers indoor, outdoor and private onsen, and we tried them all. The town is quiet and peaceful. When I got sick, Tyler kindly brought me medicine, no matter how late it was. We also enjoyed a Geisha performance with dance, music and games. The next morning’s Japanese breakfast was delicious. Overall, it was a relaxing and memorable stay. Highly recommended, and we will definitely return. -
- michaeldI9598AR (10/5): Beautiful Traditional Ryokan with Lovely Hosts. Australian Perspective - Stay here!
This is a beautiful family owned and run traditional ryokan. Moving onto its 4th generation owners very soon with Andy!
My partner and I are both Australian with very little ability to speak Japanese (hello and thank you). Tyler (current owner) made this experience so much more accessible for us as he provided so much knowledge and hospitality while speaking fluent English.
We really wanted a traditional experience away from the crowds and this was exactly that.
The town as a whole is an onsen town. Traditionally this is where Japanese families come to holiday during the colder months. Tyler mentioned 95% of the towns visitors are Japanese with 75% of his accomodation also being Japanese. Perfect for those who want to get away from the crowds and see something truely special.
We didn’t realise the whole town is built around onsens. There are public foot baths along the street for anyone to use and the accomodation having their own is perfect.
You will need to share the onsens with other guests but there aren’t many rooms so it is never busy. We did opt to get the private family bath at night room and for my partner and I it was great. Neither of us have used onsens before and were cautious to be naked in front of others so this made the whole experience a lot more relaxing. We used it at night and in the morning before anyone else. There is a small gate through the back of the room so it was very private.
We never thought sleeping on a tatami mat and futon would be comfortable but it really was! And super warm thanks to the gas heater.
We included dinner and breakfast and it was delicious, very traditional but very worth it if you are willing to try something different. (See photos) the steak was also incredible and huge!
We only stayed one night which worked perfectly for our itinerary as we used it as a stop off before skiing in Shiga Kogen but would have enjoyed another night or more for sure. You could spend a while exploring and relaxing in the sleepy town.
No IC card (Suica/ICOCA) on the trains so be sure to have cash. Tyler did pick us up and drop us off which was lovely and greatly appreciated.
You can tell there has been a lot of time and effort pored into this ryokan and we really appreciate everything the family has done so thank you for making it a great experience.
Tyler also treated us to some home baked cookies, warm apple cider by the fire and a taste of sake for dinner, all of which were lovely. We would definitely come back here again and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a unique, relaxing, beautiful and traditional experience.
Thank you Tyler and thank you to your family for making us feel so welcomed. Andy you were lovely to meet as well and best of luck moving forward.
- Heidi-Canada2016 (10/5): Perfection - We had a fantastic time at Kamesei Ryokan. The main reason that we came to this area was to visit the Snow Monkeys, but we would have liked to have stayed longer. We enjoyed the walk from the train station to the ryokan, the welcoming atmosphere of the common area, the games room, the onsens, the extra washrooms, the restaurants nearby and the atmosphere in the town with the lit lanterns at night. We especially appreciated that Tyler sat with us upon our arrival to get to know us and offer advice on what to do and where to eat. He drove us to the train station in the morning to catch our train to get to the Snow Monkeys and also drove us with our luggage. He was great at sharing the culture with us: teaching us about properly dressing for the onsen, having shoes for guests to wear outdoors (and slippers for indoors), including us in a game in the evening and teaching us a dance. We really enjoyed being invited to have a cup of apple cider each evening with the other guests. One of the coolest things we saw on our trip through Japan was the FamilyMart with a 'foot onsen' in the parking lot. People were all lined up on benches soaking their feet. Amazing! Our best sleeps of our trip were at Kamesei Ryokan - thank you for the lovely stay.
- Marc (9/5): Great place to stay that is authentically local. - The whole Ryokan was super authentic and unusually spacious for Japan. From pick up at the station to assisting us with meals at a local restaurant, Tyler and Mari were exceptional. The design of the outdoor onsen is great and the fact you can book it for exclusive use is a huge bonus. Only two minor things. The Onsens cold have been hotter but that's a personal preference, and a vending machine for drinks and or snacks would have been handy.
- Victoria (9/5): Beautiful and authentic Japanese hospitality. A warm and comfortable stay - highly recommended. - Beautiful traditional Japanese hospitality. Spotlessly clean, wonderful food, and a natural onsen (complete with sulphur aroma!). Gorgeous tatami rooms with paper walls, which were comfortable and warm. Breakfast was amazing! Tyler and Maru were fabulous hosts and we so enjoyed our stay. Tyler even helpfully picked us up and dropped us back to the train station.
- Mary (10/5): We had a wonderful stay - relaxing, cozy, restful. - Kamesei Ryokan was cozy, clean and had a great atmosphere. It felt the way one wants a ryokan to feel that is out in a smaller town. The kaiseki was amazing ! Does not apply
- Andrea (10/5): - The attention to detail and care that Tyler and his wife put into this place is outstanding. They have a plethora of knowledge if you only ask and they are always willing to help whenever they can. They make you feel special and it's a true experience of japanese culture. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to visit Japan again, and if we do we will absolutely stay here again. Thank you so very much
- Climber19294664667 (10/5): Must stay!! Breathtaking, relaxing, and serene. - Kamesei Ryokan is a must-stay when visiting Japan. It is located in an onsen town, surrounded by moutains, making the atmosphere so cosy and breathtaking. The town is also super walkable with lots to do. The inn itself is amazing, Tyler and Mari are amazing hosts and made us feel right at home. The rooms are so comfortable and having the experience to sleep in a tatami room was amazing! The ryokan itself has hot spring baths that are open 24 hours, and there is the option to add on breakfast/dinner to your stay. We felt it was such good value for the service, space, and meals!
- F6471FDfionah (10/5): Magical Stay - The atmosphere was accommodating, comfortable, and welcoming. The onsens were lovely and provided a relaxing experience. Highly recommend!
- W774CTsharons (10/5): Excellent inn with a welcoming attitude - We have stayed in a number of ryokans over the years, and Kamesei delivered excellence across the expected areas. However, we especially appreciated the homey, more laid back touches to this one, which allowed us to feel more relaxed than we sometimes do as foreigners in these types of lodging. Tyler was a bit apologetic about the age of the building and the updates that are needed, but there was nothing that bothered us. We enjoyed the feeling of staying in an inn that has a lot of history and stories to tell. The onsen waters are rather sulfurous, which made the experience feel close to volcanic nature and also provided silky smooth, warm bathing. Be sure to book time in the private outdoor bath. We found our room to be spacious and quiet, the sleeping futons comfortable, the heating system modern (no kerosene heaters!). The meals were made from local ingredients and prepared well, and we are always happy to try something we have not had before, such as 'ayu' (which we think we saw jumping around in the local river). We highly recommend that you take time to explore the town, which is quite walkable, and visit the sites nearby, as the valley and surrounding hills are quite lovely. We look forward to going back to see what Kamesei Ryokan offers after the planned updates in 2026!
- prateekg929 (10/5): Exceptional ryokan experience - This was our first ryokan stay, and despite Kamesei Ryokan coming highly recommended, it still exceeded our expectations. Tyler-san’s hospitality was second to none, setting a welcoming ambience throughout our stay. The room was immaculate, and the food was meticulously prepared, with careful consideration given to the dietary requirements of all guests in our group.
Both the public and private onsens provided a relaxing experience, on a cold winter evening. The room struck a precise balance between rustic and contemporary design, featuring tatami mat flooring and comfortable futon beds.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Kamesei to anyone planning a visit to Nagano.
- neald604 (10/5): Great Ryokan stay! - Fantastic stay with generous and kind staff, great food and onsen. Highly recommend! We are vegan and I have a peanut allergy and they accomodated, as well as accomodated our lack of Japanese with grace. Lovely area even in winter.
- mathew117 (10/5): Unparalleled Service at Kamesei Ryokan: A Benchmark for Hospitality - Owners Tyler and Mari at Kamesei Ryokan set a new standard for hospitality, delivering service that exceeds 5-star expectations. Tyler’s proactive assistance, including handling car parking and luggage upon arrival, established an immediate tone of professional care. He went above and beyond with patient onsen explanations, excellent local cuisine recommendations (including the kids' favorite ramen), and even personally walking us to a restaurant when we were confused by the address, earning the affection of our children. Mari’s quiet efficiency and gentle attentiveness ensured all comforts were met. This level of warm-hearted, personalized service made our short trip feel truly special and welcome, defining Kamesei Ryokan as a must-stay destination.
- jakubbU8872CC (10/5): Best ryokan experience – I wish we could go back there someday - We had a fantastic stay at this ryokan. Our room was very clean and generally there was peace and quiet. The hosts were warm, hospitable, and always willing to help – their kindness and willingness to support us in every situation made a huge impression. The meals were wonderfully prepared and very tasty, and the access to the excellent onsen allowed us to fully relax and enjoy the health benefits of the baths.
We really enjoyed the entertainment room, where we could play table tennis and have some fun. The ryokan was perfectly located – many interesting attractions in the area are within walking distance or by bus. We also had the opportunity to use the traditional costumes provided to move around the hotel and the surrounding area, which was a truly unique experience.
The stay in the traditional Japanese room and sleeping on tatami mats was a real joy and left us with memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. We lacked for nothing – everything was perfectly prepared. We especially appreciated the host's help with transporting our luggage to the train station. The whole experience was exceptional and we highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience true Japanese hospitality.
- Marco (10/5): Rilassante, un sogno - Ottima struttura, affascinante . Stanze grandi e pulite. Onsen favolosa!! Cena e colazione tradizionali splendide!!
- NihonTravelLTD (10/5): Really wonderful experience. Much more than just a hotel. - This ryokan is a hidden treasure. The water smells as it should for a very good onsen. Couldn’t be happier. Room very comfortable and convenient. Front desk spoke near perfect English. Location right in the heart of town. Highly recommended.
- Beatrice (10/5): A peaceful ryokan with great service and amenities - The ryokan is in a quiet, quaint town. Amenities are great, with the onsen and spacious classic Japanese style rooms. Dinner was fantastic and staff were very kind and helpful. Tyler and Mari were very accommodating. He picked up and dropped us off at the station. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you very much Tyler and Mari-san!
- Foong Yi (9/5): Thanks to both Tyler and Mari (owners of Kamesei Ryokan) for their great hospitality. The kids enjoy the “Den” (aka play - It’s well maintained, clean and we love the Japanese ryokan style.

- Ariariarioh (10/5): A cozy and welcoming stay - Staying at Kamesei Ryokan has been the highlight of our honeymoon in Japan, we were looking forward to it and it was great! The hosts are very welcoming, the structure is pleasantly “vintage” and the atmosphere is cozy. The onsen is very nice, we got to try the private one too, which was spectacular in the darkness of a windy evening. I only regret not staying longer, I would advise at least two nights, as there’s plenty to do and explore in town and around. A special mention for the meals, as we asked for a vegan menu: both dinner and breakfast were a feast and we really appreciated them both! We had a very good time and highly recommend this place!
- Simon (10/5): We really enjoyed our stay and would happily return in the future. - The staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. We also really enjoyed the walking tour through the onsen town. Only the tatami room was heated, so the bathroom and toilet were a bit cold. There was no warm tap water in the room.
- Clément (10/5): -

- 245valdasp (10/5): Highly recomended - Me and my family had a great stay at Kamesei Ryokan. Tyler is a great host who helps you to ease into (at first) daunting experience of visiting Ryokan and just let you relax and have a good time. The Kaiseki dinner was also great. I had a chance to stay at three different ryokans, during my trip, this place was the most memorable.
- laurenwN8015EL (10/5): A Perfect Stay at Kamesei Ryokan - We absolutely loved our stay at Kamesei Ryokan. The hospitality was warm and genuine from the moment we arrived. Our room was comfortable and peaceful, and the private outdoor onsen was a true highlight—relaxing, atmospheric, and exactly what we hoped for.
The kaiseki meals were delicious, beautifully prepared, and showcased local ingredients. Every dish felt thoughtful and seasonal.
One of the best parts of our stay was the cycling tour with Tyler. The route was stunning, with gorgeous countryside views, and we had the chance to meet so many lovely people from the town. It felt authentic and made the experience even more memorable.
We couldn’t have asked for a better blend of comfort, culture, and nature. Highly recommend!
- Valdas (10/5): - Great facilities and knowledgeable host.
- Donna (8/5): -
- Miyake (10/5): Beautiful experience - Tyler, Mari and their staff provide a wonderful ryokan and onsen experience! Their place puts you in a place of peace, tranquility and harmony. The various onsens gave you different soaking experiences. The food was very much farm to table so it was all very authentic. Not overstating this! Will return someday for sure. Nothing
- rowenas855 (10/5): Pleasant and peaceful - I stayed for 2 nights in this family-run, lovely ryokan in Nagano prefecture, the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. Pickup from train station available if you arrive within the time stated.
I had an upstairs room, with an enclosed balcony, overlooking the garden, plus my own private toilet.
Enjoy the onsen, a lovely way to start or finish the day, or just to relax. I was lucky enough to have it all to myself every time I went. Definitely try the outdoor onsens too.
Also highly recommend the meals here. I had the breakfast and dinner and they were both amazing.
The hike up the hill will reward you with an amazing view of the town and the Chikuma river.
- ren_gZ2888PF (8/5): Great Place to Stay with Awesome food. Slight minus due to the nature of the old Building. - Great Traditional Ryokan. The Owners and staff are Kind and helpful.
Firt the Ryokan itself is an old and Traditional Building with its Advantages and Disadvantages. It is very Beautiful and has many charming corners. The modern and western aspekts are implemented nicly. Disadvantages are that old Japanese Buildings simply don't have the best Sound and Heat insulation. Temp. is not a big problem due to the Aircon. Sound depends on the other Guests. Onsens are relaxing based on the Time one can enjoy diffrent outdoor baths. Warning for people loke me who have a Dust Allergy, Tatami Flooring is not our friend.
The Food was simply Awesome the price was fair/cheap based on the perspective. I was able to try many new things and at least found nothing i disliked. If you visit try both the Breakfast and Dinner. The Seattle Cookies are a nice Snack/Souvenir too.
Chikuma/Togura has many nice spots. Sadly i visited before the real Autumn but the views where still great. Will try to visit again during Spring. Many Places will probably be even greater. Many Great Hiking/Bike spots around.
- Rachael (10/5): A truly wonderful ryokan experience with the most welcoming hosts! - A beautifully kept and inviting ryokan! The hosts are extremely welcoming and helpful, offering advice on local spots to eat or sights to check out. The location is great with nearby access to all the local eateries. The room was cosy and clean and the futon was very comfortable. The baths were a wonderful and relaxing experience, especially the outdoor bath! Breakfast was exceptional and I can highly recommend adding this on for your stay. Sadly I only stayed for one night but wish it was longer, I will definitely be coming back to Nagano and booking this beautiful ryokan again!
- RednotTan (10/5): Fantastic first onsen experience - A fantastic first experience of a ryokan and onsen! From the moment we arrived until the time came to leave we felt like honoured guests with Tyler and his wife (both fluent in English) being so helpful, friendly and patient with our questions - and our ignorance of Japanese language and food. Our bedroom was gorgeous with a view over the ryokan garden to the hills beyond. The onsen was very relaxing with there being lovely baths in both the male and female bathing areas and to top it all the food for both dinner and breakfast was wonderful. A truly memorable experience.

- Thomas B (10/5): Wonderful stay! - We loved it. From the first minute until the last goodbye, the attention was perfect! The room, beds, onsen, breakfast… everything exceeded our expectations! Nothing to improve.
- Phanita.thangwit (10/5): - 2nd time visit, the onsen water quality is the best. Surrounding by many good restuarants that open until late night. Best for relaxing with family. The facility is good, we slept well and enjoy our trips.
- CHING CHING (9/5): Clean and centrally located with friendly operators. - Special shout to Tyler who met and greeted his guests, and hosted a “Lingo” (Apple) tasting evening for his house guests. None
- David (9/5): -

- Galitl (10/5): What a great Ryokan with Onsen it is!! - Tyler and Mari are incredible, friendly, helpful and so attentive to every detail, making sure you would get the best experience possible.
Meals were soooo tasty and special! Two of our kids have Celiac and they went out of their way to accommodate it. Much appreciated!
If you are looking for a traditional Ryokan with public and private Onsens with first class hospitality - Kamasei Ryokan is right for you.
