Guest Reviews
- Chloe (10/5): - Staff were very welcoming and polite. We had an issue with the telly in the first room they put us in, when speaking to the staff about this they decided to move us rooms which was so thoughtful. They didn’t have to do this. For it being a little hidden gem we will definitely be back!! Once again thank you to the staff at Hansen Hotel. We felt so welcome and check in was so easy also.
- Leigh (8/5): - Exactly what was need for a one night stay.
- Maureen (2/5): - I did not like anything about this hotel its not called the hansen any more its the cog and wheel...it was absolutly freezing filthy and mouldy and the mattress had more brown marks on it than a patchy muddy garden..im still waiting for my refund i was in the hotel no longer than about less than 2 hours.. its a health hazard its disgusting i dont recommend anyone staying here.. .i have photos to prove the state of it....
- Mark (8/5): - Great location and excellent price but some issues with room. Wasn't the cleanest and had no running water in kitchen.
- Les (10/5): - Room was nice and spacious. The staff were excellent and the bar on the ground floor is wonderful and the area is great, a good location close to the city centre.
- kamal (6/5): - There is no maintenance at all. The shower gives only boiling water and I couldn’t take a single shower during all my stay. The TV isn’t programmed to any channel. No Garbage basket in the bathroom. The Fridge is too small and we have to demand it. No microwave.
- Rachel (6/5): Cheap and clean room but full mobility needed! - The room is on the top floor above the pub. It was clean and warm but very basic. There was aTV but it had no signal, there was a kettle but 1 mug and 1 glass. Only instant coffee no tea available. The shower room had extensive signs of mould and the shower had 2 temperature settings cold or very hot and was very slow to drain. There are 2 car parking space’s outside the pub next to the main road so we had to park in a pay and display car park around 5minutes walk away on very busy road.cheap for one night to catch up family nearby but no longer and not one I would repeat.
- Noah (8/5): - Good friendly staff and close to the city centre.
- Deborah (10/5): - all friendly staff and esay to get place
- Glenn (8/5): - For a cheap room for a night its ok, no issues great little pub downstairs, food and drinks was spot on.
Plenty of parking around the area.
If I was in that area again, I would book it with no hesitation..
40 quid for a big city stayover bargain.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, short walk to city centre and at James park, nice bar downstairs.
Bed was comfortable, shower ok and kettle/TV etc.
Rooms were clean enough but really run down and could do with a paint
- GRAEME (6/5): - It's more a pub with rooms rather than hotel. Decor is in need of upgrade. Quite noisy.
- james (10/5): Hanson Hotel. Above excellent pub. - Was pleasantly suprised after reading some poor reviews.
Lovely clean and spacious room. Great location for City centre. ( 1 mile ) Very clean , and at a very good rate.
Would definately recommend this to others.
- Cora (4/5): - Filthy conditions floor was dusty and dirty skirting boards all covered in crap shower had mould everywhere in corners and just on the tiles themselves felt dirtier getting out the shower than in hotel carpet generally looked 150 years old and was black all up the hallway but the worst part is me and my friend have came back covered in bites which we think were from bed bugs price was reasonable but I feel like the hotel is just a general health hazard. Kettle has smegma in it and furniture looked like they’d pulled it out a skip
- Jeremy (10/5): - Room above pub, took while to find as looking for hotel name not name of the pub! But room was ok and good food drink in pub downstsirs
- Aonghus (10/5): - For the price, (£32) for a night it was spot on. All I wanted was a bit of tv a hot shower and a bed and all of that was available. Staff were very friendly, smart young people who seem to run a good little enterprise. Lively little pub with music on and football competing for noise. Tried to book again the following night but nothing left. Will definitely return. 15 minute walk from town centre.
- Rukayat (8/5): - The hotel was very clean the service was okay but there's need for improvement on Staff - costumer relationship
- Chris (8/5): Hanson Hotel, Cog and Wheel. - Check in was a breeze, staff were friendly and helpful, room was spacious, bathroom was cramped but clean, bar was lively, food looked great but I didn't have time to sample it, can't ask more for a budget hotel to be fair. Location is very handy for the city centre too. I would stay here again.
- Andrew (8/5): Hansen Hotel and Cog and Wheel pub. - We stayed for two nights. The room was a very basic en-suite, with tea/coffee, kettle and microwave. Hair dryer, iron and ironing board were also available.
The pub downstairs was good for watching sports, a decent collection of drinks. We didn't actually have a meal there but the food did look good.
Location is approximately a 15 minutes walk from the city centre.
- sarah (6/5): - The property was very lovely, the pub downstairs was lovely as well, even though it was very busy and loud on the evening we couldnt hear it upstairs. The dining around the hotel was quite limited and the room, whilest it was lovely and quite spacious, was incredibly cold even whilst using the space heater provided. The pillows were also a little uncomfortable.
- Stuart (8/5): - It was conveniently placed for transport. WI FI was weak.
- Trevor (8/5): - People in the pub-(it’s not a hotel really as its rooms above the pub) are excellent. First class friendly people. Food (burgers) really tasty. Student / young people Saturday evening. Rooms are pretty dated - old shower tray wouldn’t empty so feet had a bath- but fine for a couple in nights (up in Newcastle for football) just to sleep in before getting up to enjoy the City. Walk to main shopping area/ city and football ground. Friendly people. This is not a 5 star Hilton esque hotel- but that’s not a problem - didn’t expect it. Plus points- the bar staff and workers are so great! Negative - area is a little run down/ graffiti and fortune building next door was derelict so could park there.
- Janice (4/5): NUFC Victory Parade weekend - This is not a Hotel it’s just rooms above a pub which are very basic with the switches taken of the only Radiator in the room so it couldn’t be turned on so the room was cold.no mirror in the bathroom to get shaved ect & only one towel provided for 2 people.the positives where the staff where nice & friendly the bedding was clean & the free toiletries where a nice touch.
- Megan (4/5): Mouldy - Stayed in a double room (room 1) and there was mold everywhere; on the baseboards and in the shower. The mattress was stained and yellow and ended up getting moved rooms after we complained
- Paul (8/5): I will stay again. - Basically a fantastic location and great value for money. Really comfortable bed, hot water, great staff, good food. Slight niggles. Internet hit and miss, abit noisy until 12.00am, no bedside tables or lamps.
- Paul (8/5): Basic but clean & comfortable. - A handy hotel above a pub in Jesmond. Basic but very clean & comfortable. Shame the room advertised 15 percent discount on food and drink downstairs is no longer available.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dirty and not fit for purpose - To check in, you go to the bar which felt a little weird and the pin stopping the bar customers from coming up stairs was never on. The room was in need of deep clean. There were marks all over the walls, the shower head was disgusting and had copious amounts of build up. The shower head also could not be moved up or down as it was broken. Everything was poorly put together with misshaped bits of wood hiding things about the room. Mirrors had not been cleaned and we had to clean them ourselves to actually use them.
The beds themselves were actually okay and comfortable enough, and the location of the hotel was great with the main part of the town within walking distance. Staff were also friendly.
I wouldn’t recommend. It really would not take much effort to clean the room properly.
- Taylor (4/5): There was blood in the bed… - This is less of a hotel and more some rooms above a busy and loud pub. It was very hard to get in contact with the staff as it was listed there was parking available which there was not. There was a tiny space that about 1-2 cars could fit that was blocked so we ended up going to a car park.
Our room was on the top floor which did not help with the sound, there were loud drunk people coming up all hours.
The room itself was very sparse, cold and we found blood smeared at the end of the bed (I took photos) the door lock to our room felt very unsecure. A hard push would have let anyone in. The running water smelt very strongly of eggs and the bed didn’t seem very clean.
Overall I wouldn’t recommend this, the only good thing I can say is that it was close to where we needed to go.
- Gary (6/5): One night Newcastle trip - Great for one night and location good for city but parking an issue. Room basic
- stuart (6/5): - Up a staircase in a pub in the student area. Its what you'd expect though the drinks in the bar were surprisingly expensive
- James (2/5): - Absolutely freezing cold room with a small radiator that hardly worked and a minute oil filled electric radiator. We had to sleep in our clothes. The socket by the bed had a big scorch mark on it and the 2nd internal door to the room had a massive gap at the bottom. Room was a fire risk.
- Brian (10/5): - Very frendly staff n welcoming bed very comfortable
- Verified traveler (8/5): Average - Decent enough but unfortunately the room was cold because the heating wasn't on! The apps on the tv wouldn't work which is a shame. Looks like they don't do breakfast anymore which wasn't great, no parking available on site so had to use a council run carpark around the corner! Wasn't bad, wasn't great! No staff around @ checkout either??
- Alison (4/5): - Really disappointed, room was completely inadequate, freezing cold, and really noisy.
- Cora (8/5): - Lovely stay, good quality for a budget hotel. Thank you!!!
- Michael (2/5): - Shower was mouldy and the bed had hair in it
- Verified traveler (2/5): dont go with the photos everything is bad untidy - not as same in this photos not even cleaned beside the bed has spider webs not hot water smells bad the heater and other things photos are fake. heater was not heating enough even outside temperature was 5 degrees not good at all
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok-ok - The rooms are large but lacks cleanliness, yes its cheap but the bathroom has mold and shower head too. They dont share the pubs wifi, instead ask you to connect with public free BT wifi, when you approach the bar saying there's not enough signal in the room to connect that, a guy who wears glasses with an attitude keeps trying to connect the public wifi as if you are dumb and didn't try that. It might be he's having a bad day but i dont expect him to show his frustration on customers. The sheets and towels are clean. Room can be more cleaner, bathroom needs a thorough clean. Other than that nice and passable.
- Anthony (2/5): - Loud music til late best avoided if you want to sleep
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Old carpets need replacing. Bit more experience on Customers Service could be done. Just needs a revamp if you ask me. It be perfect when done up to a excellent standard. Just what let it down was not enough evidence was given to on the phone come to Parking. I understand your trying to run a business though a lot of visitors come far and wide into Newcastle and need this vital useful information. Just makes it's unnecessary stress experience.
- Ian (6/5): - It was ok. The rooms are very tired and the whole place needs a refurb. The lights are annoying as only one main light which is very bright!
- Harry (8/5): - Overall very good, Wi-Fi doesn’t work at times
- James (6/5): - There was a rat in a cage at the back entrance
- Peter (6/5): - reasonable basic rooms but television did not work on any usual channels and the room clearly had a damp
problem. No low light option - just bright lights controlled by one switch. Bed was comfortable and shower clean.
- Nichola (6/5): - Quite noisey from other guests/ staff? Banging in night from what i dont know, next door quests very noisy at early hours.
Clean room / bed. Shower head especially needs a really good clean. Toilet doesn't flush very good. Toilet area needs a bin.
Not sure guests rooms are as safe as they could be as pub toilets are opposite hotel rooms and the lock isnt even lockable. Hall way could do with an upgrade.
All in all we only used it as a sleep base so not too bad but for a longer stay it wouldnt suit our needs.
No staff around to check out so we just let ourselves out.
- Ken (6/5): Tired - Not really a hotel, a few rooms above a pub. Very run down and the most basic facilities.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great for Newcastle Party Weekend - The hotel is on top of a lovely, vibrant, atmospheric pub (hence some music until late). Very friendly welcome, helpful, friendly staff. Great atmosphere in the pub.
The room a little more basic than expected, our "standard" TV did not work but after some help with the WiFi we could get Neflix etc. Bed was clean and comfy, the shower nice and powerful, bathroom a little on the small side. There was a kitchenette however which was great, with kettle and microwave oven, could be useful if staying for a weekend. Also nice desk and plenty of hanging space for clothes. One issue was that the light in the porch area of our room was on a sensor. Although the door was closed, throughout the entire night, whenever the light went off something triggered the sensor so the lights came on again. Also no central heating in the room, however, an electric heater is provided. As we arrived quite late and left early, there was not point in using this, and the room did feel a little cold throughout the night.
I think this is an ideal stopover for students or people looking for a place to stay during a party weekend in Newcastle and if I was a little younger I would certainly visit again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): I probably wouldn’t stay again, sorry - The bar downstairs was very nice, however the actual room itself was quite old and unclean. The door knob into my room was loose, if you looked through the gap from the outside you could see into my room.
- Paul (6/5): - It was fine. The communal areas were grubby but the room was fine. Great location. Good value for money.Small issue. I booked another night in error which was promptly cancelled a week in advance but a refund was not offered.
- Julie (8/5): Cool location - Ideal location for my trip. Not far from the center on foot. Great to get a meal before 6pm. Only thing was no kettle or cups for hot drinks. Otherwise yeah id go again
- Holly (8/5): Pleasant stay - Pleasant stay, room was spacious and property was in a good location. Also a discount at the bar was included which was a nice surprise!
There was a bit of mould in the room and the heating didn’t seem to work, but for a one night stay for the price it was good!
- ndene (10/5): - nice bed comfy hot shower tv in room
- David (8/5): 1 night in comfortable bed - Basic room which is all we needed
- Adam (8/5): - Staff were helpful. Location was easy to navigate.
- PAUL (8/5): - Everything was fine
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good experience for a one night stay in Newcastle and a decently sized and clean room.
- Leonard (2/5): Never got to stay - Receptionist couldn’t find my booking
- Darren (6/5): - Will do if your in the area for a night. Not to far from a few good bars and the city centre but wifi connection is poor. Not recommend for a long haul stay
- Bradley (8/5): - Situated above the Cog and Wheel pub was perfect. The staff were lovely and the food and drinks excellent.
- Ryan (10/5): - It’s a decent hotel above a cracking pub.
We stayed there for the Magic Weekend (Rugby) and enjoy the stay.
You get what you pay for (it’s not five star but we didnt pay much).
Great friendly staff and zero complaints from me.
- Peter John (2/5): - only picture of room, actual place was a pub with rooms upstairs. it felt as if I was taking my wife into a brothel
- Beverley (4/5): False advertising. - False advertising by site booked with.
Staff lovely and nice feel to the bar downstairs but was advertised as having parking and there was none. Had to park on the street and top up every two hours. Said there was breakfast but there wasn’t. Dangerous socket in room so not suitable for children. Kettle available but no teabags.
- malcolm (10/5): Nice and clean - Nice clean room above the cog and wheel inn. Friendly staff and management. Nice ale and a short walk to where we wanted to be.
- Deanna (6/5): Adequate for an overnight stay. - Okay for an overnight stay but no tea or coffee making facilities in room so no morning cuppa! Radiator wasn’t on and room was quite cold. Shower was adequate but looked like tray would overflow if stayed in more than a couple of minutes. Clean enough though & bed was comfy. If you are just after the basics then is adequate.
- Emma (6/5): - Nice place
- Peter (8/5): - Positives
- Very friendly staff
- Comfy bed
- Nice sized clean room
Negatives
- It seems the wifi wasnt working properly
- Couldnt see any temperature control (so was a bit cold)
- Daniel (10/5): Lovely bar, staff, and room! - Nice clean room, friendly staff, and 5 minutes from where i needed to be. Couldn't ask for more! Would happily stay here again.
- Magnus (8/5): 2 day stay - The room was very good. Spacious, clean, good wardrobe n drawer space. WiFi was sporadically a bit temperamental but overall good connection.
An extra shower towel would've been useful (dry 1 use the other), a way to contact the front/reception from the room, and an in-room menu as app room service was allowed.
Other than that, very good.
- Chelsea (10/5): - Gorgeous staff and amazing food!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Poorer Quality Than Advertised. - The "Hotel" was rooms above a pub/bar, which was very popular, busy and loud during our weekend stay. Our door didn't lock and we had to use a door stop to keep it closed during the night.
The window was cracked in the room. The Internet connection was terrible, could barely watch YouTube, and the other wifi connections didn't have any Internet access. No accessibility, and lots of stairs.
There where winter duvets on the bed in summer, no aircon or ventilation apart from window. Our room was directly next to the ventilation for the pub kitchen and was loud untill about 12 midnight, when they closed up at the end of the night.
The bathroom was a corner of the room that had been raised, toilet wasn't secured to the floor. One of us couldn't even fit in the shower it was that small and cramped. The bathroom door didn't close properly either, and would even go in the wrong way. Their was no daily house keeping like it said. There was a TV, kettle and microwave in the room, but only one mug and spoon, no where to store food in the room either.
The staff where really kind and polite, you also get 15% off food and drink in the pub.
- François-Pierre (8/5): - Above a neighboorhood pub that quiets down at around 10:30, the room was quiet and safe. It is clean. Staff very friendly. Close to Northumberland University.
- Laura (6/5): - Overall, had a great night stay but there was no milk or white sugar to have a cup of tea and there was only 1 towel between 2. Unable to get anyone's attention due to the bar being busy. The shower was nice and got a decent night's sleep.
- Natalie (2/5): - Old pub style B&B property above a pub, poorly renovated as much of the facilities are already failing. Radiator falling off wall, no temperature gauge on shower (only very hot available) TV connection continued to fail and no internet available. Light fitting fall out of ceiling and hung 1m down over toilet. Student staff with little interest in hotel hospitality. Incorrect advertised facilities eg. there is no parking on site at a surcharge or at lease I was told there wasn't. Microwave and toaster listed on website but told this is incorrect. Had to ask for towels, no soap etc. Original room smelt of the Thai food from the restaurant next door and second room offered at the front of the building a little noisy when window open. I am afraid I feel this style of property is only successful with onsite staff that have a vested interest in the running of accommodation. Where has old style hospitality gone?
- Neil (8/5): - Good budget accommodation, spacious quiet clean room .Tuesday night so 2 for1 in attached pub downstairs! No on street park , no breakfast currently but local places . Would stay again
- Stephen (10/5): Pleasant Stay at Hansen Hotel - This was a very pleasant overnight stay. The bed was comfortable and the room was very quiet (I was there on Thursday night only). The room is quite compact, but has its own en-suite. I got the room for a very good price and it was perfectly located for me. The staff at the hotel were friendly and check in was easy.
- Janette (10/5): - Lovely hospitality, in a good location x
- Ian (8/5): Better than some - It's cheap and it's cheerful.. And there's a lot better and friendly service than some 4 and 5 star I've stayed in Newcastle
- Judith (6/5): Clean and friendly - shame about the shower! - Friendly staff, room basic but comfortable and clean. Main issue was that the shower did not work, and I didn't have time to discuss with the staff so had to resort to washing in the (very small) sink in the bedroom. A lot of noise from other customers arriving back in the early hours but that's to be expected.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The lady at reception was lovely, very friendly and helpful. The room was OK but the decor feels quite dated and in need of some renovating. The shower was tricky to work out and the single beds were a bit small (I'm 5' 6" and my toes came off the end of the bed). Overall this place is absolutely fine for a night and the staff are great.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice and cheap hotel but unfortunately the bath is not good and warm
- William (10/5): Best hotel for comfort, location and price - I had a comfortable room with a good firm mattress, a top-opening window, and no noise from other guests (but it might be noisy at weekends). Breakfast can be bought for as little as £3 (for beans on toast) or £5 (full cooked breakfast). The breakfast coffee was very poor but at those prices I could not complain. If you want more choice there are some high-quality cafes on Brentwood Avenue just one Metro stop away.
- Blair (10/5): 5 Star Service! - Meg and her team we're fantastic! Next time we come down to Newcastle there is no doubt that we will be staying again.
- Warren (8/5): Cheap n cheerful - Good clean hotel
- Will (10/5): Great hotel, reasonable and friendly host - Very welcoming, extremely good value for money and a convenient location for city centre. Would come again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - See below, I really liked statying at the Hansen Hotel
- David (10/5): Great Budget Hotel - We were going to see Ed Sheeran and this hotel was available at a very reasonable rate. Great budget hotel, very friendly staff and would definitely come back.
- Alyson (10/5): Friendly hotel within walking distance of centre - Very friendly owner with very warm welcome. Basic but comfortable twin room, has every thing we required with tv, coffee and tea, ensuite shower/toilet. Would recommend and use again.
- Chris (8/5): Stopover - Ideal overnight stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value basic hotel - Hansen hotel is a basic but good value hotel close to Newcastle and Northumbria Universities and about 15 minutes walk into Newcastle town centre. It is clean, the staff are friendly, and the rooms have TV, coffee and tea, and free WiFi. Don't expect luxury, and you may need to share a loo, but if you need an affordable place to stay that is reasonably comfortable without the frills, this could be the place for you.
- Mark (8/5): Lovely Hotel Near City Centre - I was looking for a cheap stay close to the city centre during the week & this place certainly fit the bill.
5 - 10 min leisurely walk to Haymarket and similar to the popular Osborne Road (for pubs & restaurants). Will definitely be booking again; recommended.
- John (8/5): No Problems - Good experience. Friendly staff. Good clean room. Good breakfast for the money. Cheap parking across the road.
- Alison (8/5): Friendly and close to city - Clearly the Hotel has had a lot of traffic but the room was spotlessly clean and comfy. the shower was hot and powerful, even given that I was on the top floor. The staff were great, really friendly and helpful!
Only 15 minutes into town - a great find!
- NorthernMonkey (8/5): Warm Reception - Well positioned for University- 10 minute walk at most. Clean, odourless low budget hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Double Glazed warm room with ensuite. Beds are budget mattresses but it’s only about £40/night so let’s be realistic! Breakfast a bargain at £5. Get there early for parking as there’s not enough for every room.
