• Junko (10/5): Stunning traditional Ryokan with long history. - Traditional Ryokan with exceptional service by polite and friendly staff. Dinner and Breakfast prepared with local produce. Comfortable beds, amazing quality of hot spring brought into the property directly from the near by water source that makes your skin so smooth after bathing. This place has been running over 100 years. Make sure to take a look of a beautiful room on the ground floor kept as original condition how Akiko Yosano and her husband used to stay. Le personnel très gentil et les repas/petits déjeuner délicieux. Le vrai problème vient dans l'isolation des chambres. Nous entendions nos voisins du dessus marcher fort, taper, rigoler... une heure ça peut passer mais toute la fin d'après midi et la soirée, réveillés par cela le matin... c'est dommage parce que l'hôtel est absolument génial mais si on ne peut pas se reposer cela pose problème.

Our room was clean and spacious, with windows looking out on a peaceful Japanese garden and a private onsen that we thoroughly enjoyed. We had breakfasts and dinners at the hotel - among the best meals we’ve had in Japan with a wide variety of delicious foods. It was an incredibly restorative stay.

• Tan (9/5): Overall a nice comfortable stay in Aso city! Staff are generally welcoming and friendly. - Very beautiful ryokan-style hotel with an elegantly curated garden. Cosy common areas and lovely breakfast spread served kaiseki-style. Private baths available to reserve for free once a day for guests. Areas outside the bedroom are not heated so can be quite cold. As with ryokans, the walls are very thin so you can frequently hear noises from outside like people walking, piping, washing sounds which can be a bit disruptive when sleeping.

Room was stylish and spacious, looking out into a private garden. There was a private outdoor onsen connected to the room as well. The locally sourced food was amazing and served in a private room with a garden view. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Various English explanations for the course menu, hotel and surrounding area. Free parking.

• Sin (9/5): This was a revisit after 8 years. Still love it. - We had a very nice big room with our own onsen bath. The hotel was sparkling clean and well maintained. The vegetable served in the set dinner was very fresh. Unfortunately the sashimi and sushi tasted quite bland.

We have to use the public bathroom for showers. Anyhow the public and private (booking) bath( onsen) don’t open 24 hours They close for cleaning from 10-13.00 and at that time you can’t shower. So make sure you look throughly what type of the room before you book this hotel. But for tue other things were good.

Really was a unique dining experience and the chef made a lot of effort to accommodate our dietary preferences. We had private dining breakfast and dinner. The onsen was nice but the private onsen in our room was the most memorable. Room was very large. The only thing we might have liked were a few more amenities which we had experienced elsewhere like welcome treats and light snacks in lobby or rest area.

• Cheryl (9/5): great - food for both dinner and breakfast were great. the hotel also checked in with us beforehand if we eat horse meat, and it can be switched to other types of meat (e.g. beef) if one does not consume horse meat. room was a good size and comfy, there was a toilet and shower in the room. there are 2 private onsens available for use, can book the timeslot you want when you check in, one room was only entitled to reserve one timeslot per night's stay, each timeslot is 45min. water that came out from the room sink was cold. when we arrived at the ryokan to check in, most of the slots for the private onsens were taken up already, so it's advisable to reach earlier to check in.

• Siu Ching (10/5): An excellent place for your vacation! - We had a lovely time at Sekoen. Everyone there is very professional. Their smiling faces really light the the days of guests. The meals are very delicious and they are very thoughtful to include local delicacy in their dishes. I am especially impressed with the way they serve the breakfast and dinner. They explain the ingredients and the way to enjoy food in details so they we can not only enjoy the food, but also get to know more about the local food culture. We stayed there for 2 nights and we were upgraded to a bigger room with private bath on the second night. We really enjoyed it. My big thanks to everyone at Seikoen to make my stay there extremely enjoyable. I will definitley recommend the place.

• Verified traveler (10/5): - It is a very traditional Japanese onsen in a very traditional Japanese town. It is not ultra luxurious but the whole atmosphere gives you a really good Japanese experience. What was really outstanding though - and we ate at really good places on this trip - was their dinner. Exceptional.
• Bernard WK (10/5): A Jewel in Town - Enjoyed the private onsen that overlooks the garden. Must have been a great sight in Spring and Summer. Service was good both at the reception and the restaurant. It's one of the better looking hotels in the area.

• Brian (10/5): Wonderful experience. - It was my first ryokan and knocked me off my feet. After a month it felt like the first truly Japanese lodging experience.

• Verified traveler (8/5): 美味しいお料理とゆったり客室の温泉旅館 - 大分のオートポリスに行く為にこちらに滞在しました。 施設自体は新しくない為 第一印象は『普通』でしたが、一歩中へ入れば「キチンとおもてなしをしよう」という気持ちが伝わる接客で、好印象。 食事も土地柄を活かした料理で良かったです。 部屋は11畳洗面＆トイレ付き。風呂を1日目は大浴場 2日目は貸切風呂にしました。貸し切りは、ゆったりと入れてとても気持ちが良かったです。 アニメ『弱虫ペダル』の中にも出てきた旅館だそうで、全巻揃っていたのも興味深いです。与謝野晶子ゆかりの宿、との事ですが時代を経て新しい『聖地』になっているのかもしれません。 とにかく、オートポリスにも車で30分ほどで到着できましたし、途中の景色があまりにも素晴らしく 雄大な自然の絶景を満喫できたので この宿にして良かった！と思えました。 朝食の開始時刻が7：30なのですが、無理言って7：10にしていただきました。わがままを聞いて下さりありがとうございました。おかげさまでレースにも間に合いました。 また次もこちらに泊まりたいなと思っております。

• EISAKU (8/5): ゆっくりできました。 - 一人旅でした。３階の部屋でしたがエレベータはありませんでした、それがちょっときつかったでした。部屋は清潔感はあったと思います。料理も美味しかったでした。ただ暖房の力がないのか私には部屋が寒いでした。ロケーションは住宅街にあるためよくないと思います。けど、今回の旅行はゆったりまったり温泉に入るだったのでよかったでした。

• Keith (10/5): Great stay highly recommended. - Superb and attentive service. Dinners and breakfasts were very good and the staff noted our preferences (no raw meats for one child). The private onsen were very comfortable. Rooms were a little bit cold but not unbeatable.
