Guest Reviews
- Sabera (8/5): Great stay - Heritage building located in the center of all the main spots to see, while still being peaceful and quiet. The hotel’s street itself is really beautiful with lots of great cafés and restaurants. Helpful staff. Okay in-house restaurant with select dishes made well. Overall a recommended place to stay for convenience and the architectural treat!
- M (10/5): my 6th stay 🫶🏼 - everything! nothing
- Xian Yao (7/5): -

- Jing Theng (10/5): - The room is very spacious and comfortable, the bed is also very comfortable and I slept very well.
- Farahiyah (9/5): -
- Christine (10/5): - The hotel is in the old part of George Town so very central. Its courtyard is set back from the road so a perfect place to enjoy breakfast and evening meals .
Our stay was extraordinary and the staff amazing.
One day I had left my phone in a Taxi and was very upset . The staff jumped into action , 1 checked the security camera for the number plate of the Taxi , the 2nd tracked my phone and the 3rd got on his motorcycle and followed the Taxi …and they got it back . I could not believe the help and support we were given .. That is what I call taking amazing care of your guests, an unbelievable experience thank you all so much .Christine and Ralf Germany
- TITA (9/5): Antique style, Comfy stay - We got the really amazing time at Montri Mews. The room for 5 of us was spacious, suitable for spending time rest and joy tgt The restrooms were clean and had good water system. No phone inside the room to contact front or room service during the night. Pillows should be change
More lighting inside the room would be better
- Shaila (9/5): - Beautiful heritage furniture, well maintained and very clean. Delicious breakfast and incredibly helpful staff.
- David (8/5): Muntri Mews is nice little hotel, plenty of charm in a good location - Stayed for 3 nights.. good location. Room was nice, clean with everything I needed. I arrived late about 10:45pm. Luggage arrived 3 hrs later (flight issue). No issue, staff were friendly. They contacted me when luggage arrived.
- Carl (8/5): - Great location and friendly
- Milenko (10/5): Brilliant location, small boutique & friendly - great cafe - Amazing character
- Nikita (10/5): Great location, real cultural and historical heritage , nice cafe and breakfast , but a little old and outdated. - Great location, real cultural and historical heritage , nice cafe and breakfast A little old and outdated

Nice breakfasts.

- Debra (9/5): Great location that felt like home. - The location was excellent but overall, the staff were fabulous. So helpful and friendly - we felt sorry to be leaving. The room was a big surprise - it was so large as we had asked for a king size bed. The A/C was COLD and the room was kept spotless every day with water provided as needed. The restaurant was convenient and stayed open even during Chinese New Year - a major holiday. But we were walking distance to everything, including our favorite burger joint/bar just down the road, where the staff also felt like friends by the end of our stay. We would definitely stay here again. The stairs to get to our room were very steep and dark, so anyone with mobility issues won't want to stay on the second floor. Other than that, the place was rustic, charming, had lovely gardens with wonderful staff and was super convenient as well as good value.
- Yi Cheng (7/5): -
- Bruce (10/5): Muntri Mews is an excellent base to explore Penang, if you do not have a car. - Good location. Nothing.
- Martin (9/5): -
- Donna (8/5): - The room was nice and big. Had a good layout. Location was good 👍 included daily breakfast
- Katie (8/5): -
- Timothy John (10/5): Fantastic. We would love to go back. - Central location and very friendly staff. Lovely big rooms and beds. Food at Muntri Mews cafe lovely and staffed over ba Meares to help. It’s a quiet location in the centre of Georgetown - in central of things but away from the noise. Love the old charm of a historic building. The toilets face the bed in the room which took some getting used too and have a glass door. Once overcome ok.
- Samir (10/5): - Prachtige locatie en inrichting
- therese (10/5): - The staff are simply amazing; showing true Malaysian hospitality and all are very good problem solvers.
Thank you Linda for your help with the (mistaken) parking ticket.
Thank you Ayu for your calm & cheerful smile no matter how many balls you were juggling in the air on a busy Thursday.
Rooms are much larger than average in George Town. Muntri Street is in the heart of all the food fun. We walked to Chowrasta for tau fuh fah and kopi in the morning.
I will be certainly be back
P.S. TOP TIP
Do take a trishaw ride around the UNESCO Zone. Great value at 80rm an hour (& a tip if you feel generous). Trishaws are at the Cititel end of Muntri. It's most cool-ish about 9am or after 4pm.

- Bruce (10/5): Great Location and Roominess; attentive staff. - Location and roominess. None.
- Bruce (10/5): Great location, roominess, attentive staff. - Location and roominess. None.
- Nillipat94 (10/5): The hotel room, location and staff were perfect. My best trip to George Town ever. - I selected this hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews. Wow, I am glad I did. The room was outstanding. Roomy with a sofa to relax on to escape the mid-day heat, it was clean and quiet. The staff was incredibly accommodating and helpful in every regard.
It was also a great location to walk from to see a lot of sights.
I highly recommend it. I will stay here again on all of my future visits.
- Teng Chuan (8/5): -
- Robert (9/5): A wonderful, authentic stay that felt like coming home in the heart of George Town - Muntri Mews truly feels like staying in a family home rather than a hotel. The refurbishment has been done with great care and fully respects the historical character of the property, which gives the whole place real charm and authenticity.
The staff are exceptional, genuinely kind and they make you feel completely at home from the moment you arrive. The location is perfect, right in the heart of George Town, making it easy to explore everything on foot.
Excellent value for money as well. And honestly, why would you choose one of those monstrous skyscraper hotels when you can stay at Muntri Mews and enjoy the real atmosphere of George Town?
Highly recommended. .
- Remo (7/5): - Location, Good room, Cozy little hotel, Quiet, Unfortunately The staff: House Keeping was awful. (Toilet not cleaned once in 5 days), glasses not cleaned. Breakfast orders never came as ordered, always forgott half the stuff ordered.
- Amber (8/5): - Everyone was very friendly but the front desk Front desk
- Passport30650309126 (10/5): A beautiful historic stay - perfect for couples - My partner and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at Muntri Mews. The room felt rich in history and was beautifully decorated with antique furniture. Fresh bottled water was provided and refilled daily, and the room was tidied each day with bathroom towels replenished. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The location is perfect for exploring George Town—quiet at night yet close to plenty of food venues and bars. We would highly recommend Muntri Mews.
- Hooi Ping (5/5): The room is huge, hotel staff are friendly. We have a pleasant stayed with my friends. - The location of the hotel is convenient, walking distance to nearby attractions and streets food. A very quiet neighborhood. We booked the biggest room and is really huge. It located across the street from the hotel reception. Can accommodate up to 6 people. 3 kings size bed and 2 ensuite bathroom. This type of room is located in an old Peranakan house, so is quite interesting to stay. Feel like staying in a museum. But everything is old. You need to claim up a short flight of stairs to the room. Room is quite dim as is an old house and everything is solid wood. Luckily the bed was comfortable. There's no phone in the room, so if you need something from the house keeping I guess you need to walk over to the hotel lobby yourself.
The light in the room could be brighter.
The common toilet downstairs in the house we stayed was wet and has a mouldy odor. Looks like someone showed there and left the wet towel behind and no one clean it.
- Arturo (6/5): - Servizio
- Zaliza (10/5): I want to selfishly keep this place to myself. - I want to selfishly keep this place to myself. Who doesnt like this place?
- Sunil (8/5): Good choice hotel, well run and centrally located - It’s professionally run . Central location. Everything checked out.
- therese (10/5): Charming boutique hotel in the UNESCO heart of GeorgeTown - Charming boutique hotel. Easy to walk most places in UNESCO zone . Had lunch at the cafe; the laksa is phenomenally tasty.
Will be back!
- Dawncy99 (10/5): Hidden gem of Georgie Town in Penang - A collection of heritage buildings in town! Great choice if you are looking for something NamYueng flavor, and it is perfectly blended here. Nice courtyard, antique feel furnitures, spacious guest room, and even the thoughtful room amenities with very good price, this will be the one for first choice.
Walking distance to all key attractions and also nice restaurants! This is the place and area for photogenic. Highly recommended
- harith (8/5): Beautiful and unique hotel with old world charm but clean and comfortable. Good air conditioning. - The decor of the room, practicality, size and cleanliness. Beds were very large and comfortable. Housekeeping was spot on. Some noise at times but totally manageable.
- Marco (9/5): - Room very nicely decorated, kind and helpful staff, very good location Air conditioning in the room was very noisy
- Vi (8/5): Wonderful family stay at Muntri Mews - We loved our stay at Muntri Mews: the location is perfect (in the middle of the old town, walking distance from everything, but on a quiet street) and the unique rooms design really gave us a sense of being immersed in Penang's history.
We booked the Terrace Suite for our family of four and were graciously upgraded to a Loft Suite. We really enjoyed the extra space (2 bathrooms + 2 living rooms) and will definitely book the Loft Suite on our next trip. The walls are very thin, light sleepers will need earplugs (ex: neighbouring room slamming doors, nearby outdoor bar playing loud music...). The rooms barely get any day light and while the room has good lightning, the bedside table lights were not powerful enough to read. All of this is to be expected in a heritage building and we would be happy to come again on our next visit.
- Inder (9/5): -
- Jason (8/5): -
- M (10/5): - everything!
- Ilahmad (8/5): Quiet Stay with Pros and Cons - The hotel has several staircases, which made it very inconvenient for us as we had three pieces of luggage. It may be manageable for guests with backpacks, but it is definitely not luggage-friendly. The room itself was very spacious for the six of us, but the layout wasn’t ideal. The loft area felt unsafe for our 8-year-old as the staircase had no side protection. One bed was located near the toilet, which was fine. Another bed was above the entrance, which was also acceptable, but it was very far from the toilet. This was difficult for my 80-year-old father, who had to walk a long distance and woke up twice during the night to use the toilet.
- Matteo (9/5): An authentic and beautifully designed hotel that feels deeply connected to Georgetown’s history - I really loved the authentic décor and the way the hotel blends seamlessly with Georgetown’s history. The only small area for improvement was the limited natural light and view from my room (room 4).
- Darren (6/5): Great location but don’t take the breakfast. - The location for seeing Georgetown is amazing. Everything is nearby or a walk away. Really enjoyed that! The breakfast and the staff are not great. Firstly, the breakfast menu is the same each day. The staff wouldn’t allow us to swap a coffee for a juice. As we were allowed only one thing. Asking for extra toast as the amount given dropped each day was a minefield - one day they gave us a piece within 10 minutes, despite saying we don’t mind paying. Seriously, the cost of the breakfast is not worthwhile as other places offer greater value and options nearby. The staff didn’t care for us as a family and were automatons. If it wasn’t on their list that was that. It spoiled the whole atmosphere in the mornings, which was a great shame as the place came recommended. I do not think that for the money I paid switching a juice for a coffee is a big deal! The menu is the same items each day. We were there for 5 days so rather repetitive and the amounts on the plate decreased throughout the week. I will look at alternatives when I return to Georgetown.
- Mette (10/5): -
- Theng Peo (10/5): 7 relaxing days in Muntri Mews - Spacious room, very comfortable beds, wonderfully convenient location! Nothing
- sandpiperandmolly (8/5): Malaysian Hospitality - A charming place to stay in a relaxing and quiet location. Walking distance to wonderful restaurants and hawker foods. Hotel and restaurant staff were friendly and courteous. My weeks stay was a very pleasant experience.
- Su ling (8/5): -
- LLOYED ANTHONY (8/5): Great Heritage Hotel in the heart of Penang - The property was really good; the bed was comfortable, toilets were clean and the room had all the necessary amenities and was well decorated. And its different from usual hotels being a heritage property.
The location of the hotel is superb as well. And their cafe has one of the best food in Penang. The walls are a bit thin and noises from the outside could be heard.
- Alessandro (2/5): - La posizione. Pessimi.
- Jošt (10/5): -
- LING (10/5): -
- Adeline (6/5): Great location, comfortable stay. - Great location, walking distance to many good eateries and tourist spots. The rooms are clean with complete amenities. Housekeeping service is excellent. The reception is always very polite, warm and accommodating, much appreciated! Security: We took up all 4 rooms within the same building, and expected to have privacy within the space as an all-women group. There are random male hotel staff relaxing in our living room or courtyard at random times of the day without any duty to perform, and they don't leave even after us asking if they have any business being in our space. This has been brought to the attention of the hotel, but the incident continued throughout our stay.
Parking: There are random cars being parked in front of our main door every day despite the space being reserved for hotel guests, which led us to have to seek parking elsewhere on a daily - not sure if this is something the hotel is able to manage better in the future.
Comfort: Blankets in the room are too thin. The aircond unit in my room kept automatically switching off in the middle of the night without our tampering, which is a little curious. The room and amenities are very comfortable overall.
- Vincent (7/5): The warm and caring staff more than made for the few shortcomings we experienced and made our stay memorable . - The staff at the property are very warm and friendly. They also removed a hazard very promptly when informed about it (see what I didnt like about the property for details).
Good location at a reasonable price. The Loft allowed us to provide privacy for some members of our group while allowing us to stay together. Lighting is poor and is a hazard for my elderly parent as there are some steps to get into the room.
There was a stray nail on a handrail which pricked my elderly parent’s finger, causing it to bleed within minutes of our check-in.
- Fifi Poirot (10/5): Outstanding - Everything was very well done. We enjoyed it. No pool - but not a deal breaker for us.
- Pik Wah (8/5): -
- Samantha (10/5): Charming hotel located at the centre of George Town - We liked Muntri Mews for severally reasons:
1) Location was perfect, everything we wanted to see was at 15/20 min walking distance, including most of the must try restaurants, we had to use taxis only in a couple of situations.
2) the place had lots of character, the way the room was decorated was lovely and we enjoyed an extended amount of time at the hotel since it was so relaxing
3) the room was super clean
4) all the staff was super nice and they even booked a taxi for us when we had to go to the train station.
Overall we had a very pleasant stay and we would certainly book it again if we are back in George Town If I really need to find the needle in the haystack, I felt that the mattress was a bit hard for my personal taste. This is not necessarily a defect since other people might prefer hard mattresses. Nothing that a foam topper would not solve anyway! This would not block me from booking again but I am mentioning this in case people with back problems find this useful.

- 350camilial (10/5): Amazing for location, hospitality and interior design of the spaces. - Amazing staff, bedding, pillows and interior design of this hotel. I highly recommend your stay here which is super central to where you have to visit within George Town.
I loved the pillow at the hotel, and I had a good night rest!
- Nigel (10/5): Delightful experience of heritage living. - Upgrade to 2 bedroom suite. Delightful heritage furniture and artifacts.
- M (10/5): -
- Vera (8/5): Great money for value - - The room was huge
- The location is very close to tourist spots, yet very quiet
- The staff are friendly
- The room is well ventilated - It rains a lot in Malaysia, and because of the structure of the house, you get distracted by the rain at night
- S (8/5): Great location, staff & cafe. Comfortable. - Great location and pleasant & professional staff. Spacious and comfortable. Good cafe. Curtains a little old and did not close completely which is important so if it’s a found floor room.
- Alexandra (10/5): Fantastic, would definitely recommend - Lovely hotel, very comfortable, great breakfast and very pleasant staff
- Reine Claude (7/5): Good location - Good location Noisy air cons from outside
Breakfast not so good
Linda
- Yin Wah (8/5): Vintage experience in Penang⁶ - Vintage experience. Something different. Windows cannot open out
- Brian (8/5): -
- Rawate (9/5): We had a memorable visit to Georgetown and our stay was wonderful. - The room was clean and very well furnished. The staff was extremely efficient and breakfast was great at the restaurant.
It is close to Armenian street which has amazing street art. A must visit for sure.
- sylviaooi (4/5): Wrong choice - Arrived late at night, we were warmly received; the check-in and checkout procedures were simple and quick. The location was ideal, but the house was old, and the door and cabinet locks were loose. We were bitten by mosquitoes every night, and the receptionist casually said that it just happened to be rainy season. The toilet was very cramped, and we felt suffocated when we used it. There is a television set and it is clearly stated that there are six channels, but none of the channels are working properly or can be watched. The Wi-Fi is very weak, and there is no telephone in the room to contact the front desk. The cafe's Malay food was excellent.
- 190tinaf (10/5): A wonderful place for making memories - Over the Deepavali long weekend, 12 of us from Australia, Singapore and KL had a reunion in Muntri Mews for 4 days. I selected this hotel because I had stayed here before and knew it was a good fit. We stayed across different room types in three properties and met at the Loft Suite which had a generous living area for our gatherings . Muntri Mews was just perfect for us, an intimate hotel which made us feel right at home, and the opportunity to experience staying in a well preserved heritage shophouse and unique mews in a central but quiet location. The rooms were clean, comfortable and amenities were satisfactory although being in an old building some noise can be expected.
Their service however was exceptional. The staff really made our stay so pleasant and small touches like the complimentary afternoon tea was nice. I want to thank Linda at the front desk for managing all our requests so attentively and professionally. The Mews cafe is highly recommended. We had breakfast and lunch there and the food is delicious, thanks also to the excellent service of Durga. Thank you also to the reservation manager Shawn who was patiently corresponding with me for many months prior to our stay.
Thank you again for making our reunion a memorable one.
- Christine (9/5): Lovely location, fabulous decor. - The decor and the staff attention was truly exceptional. Ordering at the restaurant was confusing. Orders were not what they purported to be. And while the food was tasty it did not correspond to the order. And restaurant staff did not respond appropriately.
- Caroline (9/5): Comfy - Homestay feeling.
Love the Peranakan decor The door lock was not very good. Need to change it for better safety.
- Rachael (9/5): Central location in a lovely heritage building. - Heritage building and decor, comfy and spacious room, friendly staff and central location but quiet at night. Lack of facilities like a pool but we knew beforehand.
- andrewmD765ZW (10/5): Best accommodation secret in Georgetown - What a fabulous hotel! Perfect location, lovely staff, beautiful decor. Walking distance to all of the Georgetown UNESCO world heritage precinct. Quiet. Feels like you have stepped into historic Penang. Linked to artisan crafts and local heritage.
- Paul (9/5): -
- Alison (10/5): - Love this place!
- Kim (10/5): - Beautiful property and staff are lovely.
- tcyokohama (10/5): Fabulous! - It's always lovely to come back to Muntri Mews. Fabulous staff. Fabulous rooms. In the heart of George Town
The Mews Cafe has the very best black glutinous rice with coconut cream dessert in all of Penang Island. And fabulous coffee, plus freshly made juices. The staff, esp. Nazri and Durgha, are lovely too; 5 star service indeed .
- Micha (8/5): Sfeervol ingericht hotel met grote kamer in george town - Sfeervol ingerichte relatief grote kamer, goed ontbijt (croissant was lekker) uitstraling hotel mooi.
- therese (10/5): - Always lovely to come back to Muntri Mews.
The Mews Cafe has the very best black glutinous rice with coconut cream dessert in all of Penang Island. And fabulous coffee, plus freshly made juices.
- Tourist27227084667 (8/5): Elegant accommodation experience - This is a really nice hotel in a great location in George Town, but the hotel sign isn’t very obvious, so it took me a while to find it. We stayed in a twin bed room. The building is definitely old but elegant, and there were no issues with water pressure or Wi-Fi. Just a small suggestion about breakfast—the croissants were a bit too oily. It would be nice to have some healthier options on the menu.
- Kian Hong (9/5): A charming stay with great location, spacious rooms, and friendly staff - This is my second time staying at Muntri Mews in Penang, and it was just as enjoyable as the first. The location is ideal – within walking distance to many nice cafés, good restaurants, and shops. It’s also a short stroll to the famous night street food at Chulia Street and Kimberly Street, making it very convenient for food lovers.
The hotel is an old building converted into a boutique stay, and I love that it retains its architectural charm. The décor is beautifully done in Peranakan style, giving the place so much character. The room is huge, very comfortable, and considering the size and atmosphere, the price is very reasonable.
What makes the experience even better is the staff – always friendly, welcoming, and ready to help.
Overall, Muntri Mews remains one of my favourite places to stay in Penang, and I would gladly return again. If I had to point out one area for improvement, it would be the bed and bedding – the mattress and quilt could be better for an even more comfortable stay.
- Joanne (9/5): Beautiful period property in the heart of Georgetown - Fabulous family room. Lovely location and good breakfast. Nothing
- Lee (6/5): Nice vintage setting but bad pillows and environment due to smelly drain from behind the property - Nice vintage setting, but bad ventilation - room smells like dirty drain
- James Carl (8/5): - Renovated Heritage building
