Guest Reviews
- Dougal (7/5): A lovely few days which I'd happily repeat. - The location is great, very handy for the Bus station. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room clean and comfortable and the water in the shower was hot and plentiful. They do food for most of the day with a break between 15.00 and 18.00, but Newport has other options as well. They don't do Luxury, but neither do they charge for it. I found it a pleasant place to stay and would happily go back. TV a good size and with good reception. I had to nag a bit to get a rubber mat for the shower. (I'm getting on and at hazard of slipping.) And the stairs are steep, narrow and twisting, which was a problem, and being an old building doesn't have a lift. Maybe not for folk with mobility issues. The building has recently been refurbed, and this is ongoing I think as there is an upstairs room labelled Breakfast Room and an arrow on the stairs pointing Up; breakfast is actually downstairs. The kitchen is actually upstairs which must be a pain for the staff going up and down with plates. The water pressure in the bathroom basin wasn't great but that's a minor point. Would have been nice to have got the window open, but that also is a minor point. Internet access downstairs was OK, and on the landing outside my room, but once in the room I had to use my own 'pebble' mobile internet.
- Jo (10/5): - Lovely room. Considering it's in the middle of town it was very quite. Food was good. Will be back. My only criticism is there was no hairdryer in the room.
- Nick (9/5): Great staff just the one comfortable greet Guinness - Fair play to the Scottish lady ran the show in her own 👏🏽💪🏼 Unfortunately the shower was only a dribble not sure how you can get better water pressure
- Mary (10/5): Fabulous place. Thoroughly recommended - The building was charming and very attractive. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. It was in the perfect location for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be coming back This is trivial but the music being played (not live) was not to our taste
- Grant (7/5): Good value stay in a great location - Good value for money and in a great location less than five minutes walk from the bus station. My single room was clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious (apart from the bathroom). The bathroom was a bit cramped and I couldn't get the shower to work properly (I could only get it to run cold). I must have come down to breakfast at a busy period as there were no free tables and I had to share with a group already eating.
- Gary (8/5): Good price paid but paid for a twin room and got a double but was only me in room in the end so fortunate - Location & friendly Cold shower in morning
- ian (9/5): brilliant - fab food.....exceptional breakfast. excellent service bit noisy at night, but not the fault of the hotel at all, just general hubbub outside
- Emma (8/5): Very good - Very accommodating, beds comfortable nice and clean breakfast good Dinner served later than 7, black out blinds and toilet roll in bathroom
- Lloyd (5/5): - Location WiFi signal in room, shower was poor
- Poonyaphat (8/5): - Friendly and helpful staff, very good location, very generous breakfast options The windows either fully close or wide open
- PasNap75 (9/5): Un vero hotel con pub inglese - Posizione e tipicita del posto
- gillick (10/5): - Excellent location, great breakfast and very enjoyable stay, Tiian was extremely helpful. will definitely stay there again Nothing
- Mark (10/5): Brilliant weekend - Fantastic staff and a fantastic location. The breakfast was lovely too Nothing
- Barbara (5/5): - Location, comfortable bed Kitchen shut earlier even I rung that we come for dinner, no soap in the bathroom, very small shower
- Stacey (8/5): Fab weekend as always - The size of rooms The stairs are small and steep
- colin (6/5): Good location for travelling around. Nice pub - Good location and a good pub Bathroom was a bit small.
- Shane (8/5): A very enjoyable stay. - The food (dinner and breakfast) was exceptional. Good location in centre of town. Friendly atmosphere. Pool table in bar. Live music in evening. Lots of character. One room was better than other (more freshly decorated etc) and one had windows which didn't open - compensated for by slightly noisy air conditioning unit.
- Graeme (9/5): first time in Isle of Wight for years Chose a Newport as a good central location on explore the island. Very happy with - great location right in the heart of Newport Lovely friendly staff. Excellent breakfast! nothing
- Abigail (8/5): - Great breakfast, easy to find and get checked in. Great staff and friendly atmosphere. Good for solo travellers. En suite quite small.
- Mark (8/5): -
- Astrid (9/5): -
- Emma (9/5): Brilliant stay in a characterful pub. - Perfect pub in the middle of Newport. Great atmosphere, brilliant staff and very nice rooms. Would definitely recommend.
- Michael (8/5): Stayed for two nights. Very popular bar with clean, tidy and respectable rooms. Free breakfast was good quality. Staff w - Clean, tidy and respectable. WiFi was poor and no phone signal unless situated in the bar area.
- Akhil (7/5): -
- Justin (8/5): Convenient central stay - The location is perfect, right in the heart of Newport. The breakfast was superb, generous portions freshly cooked to order. An exceptionally noisy air con unit, the lack of a chair, and castored individual beds which, although comfortable to sleep in, when sat on tend to move with the slightest movement, reduced comfort levels somewhat.
- Spindler (5/5): Ok. Unlikely to stay here again ... - For a town centre location is was OK, near everything you are likely to need for a weekend break. Typical 'pub' hotel with an OK atmosphere created by the open fire. No parking facilities 'on-site' despite the description stating there was parking available. Nearest was a multi-storey opposite the hotel which was relatively cheap for two days but was locked each night from 7pm until 7am so if you wanted to go out during the evening this was a major restriction. Instead I had to use a car park near the bus station which was less secure.
Breakfast timings were limited - I was not informed of this either before or during my stay - with the breakfast starting at 8am which is no use to people who need to start and get on with their day early. Despite having paid for breakfast in advance, I had to miss it so can't comment on quality. Another downside, I went down to the bar and was told it was 'closed' despite it being only 10:40pm and after stating I was a resident.
- malcolm (8/5): - Great location and breakfast
- malcolm (8/5): - Easy check in great location and excellent breakfast
- Hacini (10/5): -
- Anand (9/5): GREAT STAY IN IOW - I like the fact that it is on the prime location in newport, buses to every corner in the island is available within 2 mins walk. Happy that i chose them, food was great. Nothing like that.
- Tony (6/5): Lovely room, issues with water. - Decor of room 12 was lovely. Great decorating of room and bathroom, really nice. Tea, coffee, bathroom soaps all excellent. Really liked through room. Shower would not give any hot or warm water. Sink did after running for a while, shower run for ages and ages, zero warm came through, stone cold. Bed had no head board and two screws sticking out wall by pillows.
- Ana (7/5): -
- Corentin (10/5): -
- Leah (7/5): -
- Alison (8/5): Good location, friendly staff and fantastic breakfast - Location Small bathroom

- O6267MRlizs (10/5): perfect dinner out - we had a wonderful dinner here. The barman was attentive. For starters I had haddock gratin exceptional flavours lovely chunks of fresh haddock. My husband had the mushrooms very creamy and garlicy just how he likes them. On to the main course I had the garlic butterfly chicken, totally melt in the mouth ordered the garlic butter as an extra didn't need it but totally worth it. My husband had baked cod with seasonal veg and I very tasty jus. I can truly recommend the food here it is a taste bud sensation
- Nickydl (10/5): Great breakfast - My hubby and I visited this morning for a breakfast with a Price is Wight voucher. The breakfast was delicious and cooked to perfection. The lady behind the bar was very helpful and attentive. We would definitely recommend and return.
- Nicola (10/5): -
- Cynthia (1/5): Cold water , I suffer from hayfever , I was ill all night due to dirty carpets in the building, I only spent one night - Nothing I was coming from work , after doing a 15hour shift out in community , I was ready for a shower , got there the water was cold , i couldn't shower yet I had another 15 hour long day the next day . Same thing again happened the next morning at 5 am when I tried to shower . Carpets are so dirty when going upstairs to the rooms . I only stayed for one night instead of two I couldn't afford to stay another night without a shower.
- Tim (7/5): Overall very good - Lovely helpful staff
Excellent breakfast
Friendly well appointed bar Our bedroom needs some love and attention
- Babushkava (4/5): Not recommended - A warm welcome from a member of the bar staff and a good, hot breakfast the next morning, but the bit in between was horrible.
Tatty stair carpet, dirty walls, on the way up to the bedroom, which was unheated - on a cold, wet February night.
The wall heater was broken, but we found this out after fiddling with it, then going back down the spiral staircase, accompanying the bar staff member back into our cold room, her fiddling with it and then ringing the owner.
He had put a tiny, oil-filled heater in one corner and, after two hours, the room was pleasantly warm.
The bathroom was cold and we could not get the towel rail to warm up. The barwoman helped us, again, by speaking to the owner.
Some notes in the room would have helped, but, hey, we'd prepaid, so why not have everything warm to greet us?
Grotty, cloudy window glass and thin curtains that let in all the early morning light. A tiny shower cubicle that my husband, of average build and height, only just fitted into.
I remember such a hotel room, in the 1960s, but, in most places, they've improved, considerably.
- Kara (5/5): Lovely building, food was amazing, staff were ok but would not stay there again - The hotel was lovely but in need of repairs which the new owners have made a start on. Because the repairs we ended up with no hot water or working shower for the whole of our stay. We did mention this and were told they would look into it. But nothing was done.
- Trail11172037063 (10/5): Great welcome - We called in with a party of six people on Sunday lunch time. We were made very welcome and all of the meals were delicious. We will definitely go back.
- Nicola (9/5): Comfortable best breakfast in any hotel I stayed amazing food - It’s a great place to stay got all things you need to hand very friendly welcome from staff N/a
- roger john (9/5): -
- Natalia (8/5): -
- Christopher (9/5): Convenient location and an enjoyable stay, Bed very comfortable - This is an old building with history, it is nicely presented but very unlike the world of modern multiple Hotels.
One thing which could be an issue for some people, the music from the bar can be heard from the room. I had the TV on which overpowered it. When I went to sleep I am used to having the radio on so this posed no problem for me.
The shower had adequate hot water an a notice how to work it, too often you only find out by trial and error.
The breakfast room was nicely presented and cooked to your requests.
Will definitely stay again.
Thank you. No way to contact staff from the breakfast room.
- Philip (9/5): We were very impressed by the accomodation and the food was fantastic. - Location was quiet at night and central to the island to travel to the attractions by an excellent bus service. Nothing comes to mine, the re-decoration of the accomodation is well in progress by the new management who only took over in May 2025.
- Rynel (10/5): The stay is a 10/10 for 1 night with everything being near you like McDonalds which is down the road - The rooms are fantastic, booked a twin room and a family room. It was absolutely fabulous. The twin room smelled amazing upon entry, with a pleasant view of the road, and the restaurant below had everything we wanted, which was a 10/10. I got to say the shower amenities smelled fabulous and made you feel fresh, and the free wifi. Not to forget, the morning breakfast was great, it kept us full for the rest of the day, and it was probably one of the best breakfasts I have ever had for a while. 10/10 Only downside was that the family room didn't have a window view, but we were out for most of the time, and the showers are good, but a little bit tiny; otherwise, everything was perfect
- Mike (7/5): Comfortable and convenient. - Good location for centre of Newport restaurants etc. Public car park was slightly awkward on timing etc; would have liked more information on that before arrival.
- Christopher (9/5): -
- Gail (6/5): Although convenient location next time I will look for accommodation that room amenities that are more suited to adult s - Location I had a single room but more or less paid for a double room but the facilities in that room were not good. The shower was tiny - best suited to a child and the toilet position meant when sitting down my knees hit the small shower cubicle.
- Felicitas (8/5): Ein super Hotel. Sehr empfehlenswert! -
- Maggie (1/5): Wouldn’t return - Could not supply any of my requested breakfast items, Therefore my breakfast was toast and butter The most uncomfortable bed I have ever experienced. Lots of noise from the bar, noisy until 1.45 am.Poor nights sleep.Hairdrier didn’t work. Door lock loose and difficult to open. No one on reception in the morning to leave feedback or respond to requests, just a metal box to post keys. Not a pleasant guest experience.
- John (10/5): Fantastic and more than expected - Fantastic service more than I expected for the price and Fantastic breakfast would definitely stay again
- Ryan (10/5): - Excellent value for money. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the included breakfast was fantastic. I would highly recommend staying at this place.
- Stephen (9/5): - The room was cosy and perfect for what we needed.
- Rebecca (10/5): Very good price and a lovely stay for our friend's wedding. Great location and friendly owners/staff - Lovely breakfast made to order Can't think of anything
- Brigitte (7/5): Other than the shower issues, our stay was agreeable. The breakfast offered a good selection and the staff were very nic - Comfortable beds, tea/coffee available in the room Shower stall dirty, no session in the shower, shower taps difficult to use and regulate temperature. 2 pretty cold showers in my short stay. My friends had the same experience in the other two rooms
- Simona (1/5): - Breakfast was good I was told I would be given street view but go to see forget about the street view the windows was not opening and I was feeling suffocated
- Katherine (10/5): Go and stay here for a wonderful visit and lovely staff and atmosphere - The hotel staff were very kind and welcoming they made sure the heating was on in the room and lit the log burner in the bar because I'd been caught out in the rain and needed to dry off
They stored my bike at the back of the hotel so it wasn't on the public street
The food was fantastic and there was even live music
Beds were comfortable and the linen was all cotton
There was no Street noise from my Room
Location very central
Had a wonderful time will visit again As other reviewers have said the bathroom is a bit small
But talking to the new manager he has plans to upgrade all the rooms over the next year
- Julie (8/5): - Breakfast was included and was amazing. The shout was a little smalo
- Jeff (7/5): - Breakfast good The sink for washing could have been bigger.could not wash without getting the floor wet. O I 09 on 7th
- Sheila (4/5): Terrible night's sleep - Breakfast was fine. Location good. Was kept awake for at least an hour after going to bed by noise from pub downstairs. Just after 4 am fire alarm went off at which stage I noticed there was no info in room regarding fire escape - surely illegal?. Went down to reception where there was already a female member of staff who rang fire brigade. She seemed uncertain whether there were any other guests! It was a false alarm. On returning to my room I noticed there was one single fire escape notice at ground level in the corridor. It wasn't clear where it was pointing. I would not feel safe staying in this hotel again.
- Gail (8/5): Just as described , cosy rooms , good food , good location - Great location
- Jeffrey (3/5): Would not stay there again. - Close to the town centre Help with the suitcase.should of to offer her assistant.
- sharon (8/5): Great value for money - Good location for guest needs
Clean and plentiful toiletries
Comfy bed
Good breakfast A little chilly in room on arrival
- KEVIN (7/5): Good hope the new owners make it excellent - Breakfast was good Biscuits were stale and out of date in the room
- timmI9618BV (10/5): Marvellous meal in Newport Isle of Wight. - Excellent Sunday lunch at this delightful Olde World hotel. Friendly staff, really very good food and good service. Thoroughly recommend
- Georgia (10/5): A great little weekend get away - The staff were really good and helped our friends change rooms when there was an issue with theirs There was a leak in the shower to the room beneath us which meant we couldn't use it.
- Ralph (5/5): -
- Teresa (8/5): Pleasant - The hotel, food and staff was excellent expecially the food and comfy bed Parking was difficult finding a carpark you can park overnight if you dont know the area , multistory can only park for 12 hours and its locked after 7pm. The noise from the band was very loud in my room but that can't be helped.
- J495TTlm (10/5): Very good - Had a lovely 2 course meal 10/11/25. We bought some vouchers off the price is Wight. I’m glad we did as the food was delicious and the service was great. Even though the poor young girl on shift was working on her own. I felt that it was a bit unfair for her to be doing the job of at least 2 people but she coped well and always had s smile. Thank you we will be back.
- Russell (9/5): Friendly, clean & comfortable. - Nice pub centrally located and close to all the shops. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was nice and clean and very good value for money. The breakfast was very nice with plenty of options. Can’t really fault it.
- Searle (8/5): Newport visit - Very old hotel with lots of character, the inclusive breakfast was excellent The entrance had a signs of being decorated with a dust sheet left in that area.
The handle of the door very loose almost falling off.
The winding very old staircase was difficult to climb and you needed to bow your head as was very low..
The small shower not really fit for purpose although it worked ok.
Some skirting not in place and partly painted, bit scruffy.
- CHRISTINE (10/5): - it was very cosy and i slept like a log...the staff were very friendly and helpful i didnt like that i didnt book 3 nights instead of 2....everything was great no issues at all
- Lee (8/5): Very comfortable & fantastic breakfast - Location
- Hannah (9/5): Had an enjoyable time in Newport - Great location. Nice room The stairs were quite steep but I think if it had been a real problem I could have stayed downstairs. Quite noisy at night because right in the town centre
- Torty (8/5): Lovely place to stay. - Location smack in the middle of Newport, downside was parking, nearly ÂŁ50 for 2 days so factor that in. Lovely pub/hotel, very historic building with crooks and crannies! Room was lovely, clean and everything there.
Breakfast was delicious and plentiful.
Staff helpful and friendly.
Would stay again. Very noisy from street and bar music.
- Lee (8/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): - Lovely room, great food, amazing full English breakfast with proper sausages, good selection of real ales. Nothing
- Roger (9/5): Excellent place shame about parking - Food excellent, central location No overnight parking had to find car park 5 minutes away
- Jeff (9/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Adam (8/5): -
- Christine (9/5): - Location is accessible, easy to find. Breakfast is also good! We loved it. As it is an old building, facilities have limitations so understandable. But the most apparent is that the shower area is tight, movements are limited. Water also splashes on the floor outside the shower room.
- Margaret (8/5): If - Breakfast was excellent. Location was also excellent. The room was too small to qualify as a proper double room.
- Benjamin (6/5): -
- Penelope (5/5): Good location.Friendly. Comfortable bed - The window was so dirty I could hardly see out of it
- Alison (5/5): Tolerable for the price. - Central in Newport. Inexpensive. Good, if limited, breakfast. Very very small bedroom & shower. A very narrow space around the bed. No room for any furniture at all. Shower cubicle was the smallest I’ve ever seen. Corridors & stairways were pretty grubby.
- Martina (8/5): -
- Morag (5/5): - The breakfast
The outlook and position of thd breakfast room The only problem was the toilet in the bathroom did not flush, we did let a member of the maintenance staff know and they said it was a dodgy vavlxe and to pull up the flush mechanism we did that but it still would not always work.
- O7773HKtimm (10/5): Three Old Gits plus one Nephew, Newport, Isle of Wight - Considering the Wheatsheaf had been under new management since May this year and they are still working on decorating the rooms, they have done excellent! A very friendly atmosphere, the staff were great and the food was excellent, well done to the Chef/s! The location of the Wheatsheaf being in St Thomas Square, was perfect with the Newport Minster on the square also, hearing the bells the first night we were there! With the square situated very close to the shops and the bus station, it made getting about easier! Many thanks to you all at the Wheatsheaf, you helped make our four days so much better! We will certainly come again!
- Graham (10/5): Great - Excellent
Nice place
Friendly Fabulous in every aspect
- Michael (9/5): Really enjoyed the stay great location and breakfast was superb - Lovely position breakfast was excellent Room was a bit small and shower cubical was tight but the shower was good
- Helen (8/5): - Most facilities were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was nice. Very dated, windows wouldn’t close properly. Would be quite cold in the winter. Needed a bit of updating and general maintenance.
