Guest Reviews
- Arno (9/5): - We had a wonderful stay at Munti Grove! The staff was very friendly and gave us suggestions for nice breakfast and dinner locations. The room was clean and spacious, and the pool was refreshing. There is indeed some noise from a nearby bar, but nothing we couldn't sleep from.
- YING-CHI (9/5): -
- Richard (8/5): - Location. Hard bed. No proper separate bathroom.
- Kris (9/5): -

- Ka Yaw (9/5): Great heritage design. Friendly staffs. Great location except can hear loud music and singing from nearby bar at night. - I like the cool heritage style. Loud music from neighboring bar.
- Janne (10/5): A great place to stay in Georgetown - Room was beautiful and so great to have a pool with complimentary ice creams
Staff were fabulous, they even spoilt me for my birthday which was so special.
Location was perfect for us Not a thing
- Janus (8/5): - This is a very nice heritage hotel in a great location in Georgetown. The room size is very good, the pool and lounge area are nice and the staff were really great - friendly and helpful. The speed of the WiFi is very slow a lot of the time and drops out occasionally. The four poster bed was nice but the mattress was a bit too firm for my liking.
Niets
- Ng (8/5): A pleasant and comfortable short stay. - Room is large and clean and the bed is firm and comfortable. Location is close to the Love Lane where there are numerous cafes and to also a short walk to Chulia Street food market. There was a faint music from the neighbourhood on some nights but it did not affect our sleep.
- Heather (9/5): Beautiful accommodation in the heart of old Georgetown with great staff and a lovely pool! - The best location to see the sights of Georgetown! Lovely reception, the pool was so refreshing! Our room was beautifully decorated and so functional! Also, free water filling station by the pool and a kettle with coffee and tea in the rooms Also, the staff, especially Martin and Suffian were fantastic- professional, friendly, and full of good advice! We lived everything about the Muntri Grove!
- Julie (8/5): - Lovely old building converted to hotel rooms. Spacious and clean. Pool was clean. Staff helpful annd pleasant. Not luxury but comfortable No breakfast.
The nearby karaoke bar. Obviosly outside the hotel's control and they do offer earplugs
- Kim (10/5): Perfect getaway - heart of heritage area - Location and beautiful friendly staff Beds very firm
- Vanessa (10/5): Wonderful stay at Heritage hotel - Wonderful 5 night stay at the Muntri Grove with my daughter. Service was excellent and any requests were tended to immediately and with a smile. Property was comfortable, clean and well maintained. My daughter is gluten free and the receptionist ensured that she was provided sweet treats during her stay. Location wise it is walkable to the old town about 10-20 mins but when it’s hot used a grab which are very reasonably priced (less than 10 MYR). Noise from surrounding bars is loud particularly on a weekend but with ear plugs (supplied by staff) it didn’t trouble us.
- Melanie (10/5): Georgetown gem - The hotel is 3 mins walking to the street where all the bars are.
Staff were very helpful.
Hotel room was great, bed really comfy, had the best nights sleeps there The aircon didn't work very well.
- Marnie (9/5): -
- Geoffrey (9/5): Do yourself a favour and book this place. I didn’t want another hotel room and at Muntri Grove I had a beautifully resto - Beautiful and large room, location close to heart of historic area of Georgetown, great pool, super friendly and helpful staff. N/A There was some local music noise from bars on some nights (not every night) but it didn’t bother me and ear plugs are provided by management, in case.
- Leanne (8/5): Great location. Lovely rooms - Great location to explore George Town on foot. Also near to restaurants and bars etc. staff were very helpful. Big and clean rooms. The bed was very hard. I wish I had known that if I had mentioned earlier, and hotel will provide you with a mattress topper
- Orane (8/5): - A very charming place. Huge bedroom. Incredible bed. Pretty good location with bars and restaurants around, 15mins by foot away from the main attractions. A bit overpriced in my opinion. The windows were giving on the outside corridor for every guest to go in their rooms. It had charm, but lacking some privacy.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Perfect central location in an old heritage building. - Old charm
Location
Staff Hard bed - really hard
Absolute Empfehlung.
- Pascal (10/5): -
- Tony (8/5): Very happy stay at Muntri Grove. Great location, great facilities, great staff. - Location was great, staff were super friendly. Anything you asked for was looked after quickly. The pool was wonderful, the bed, while firm was good after we added a mattress topper. Noise at night from nearby Karaoke bar. This isn’t Muntri Grove’s fault, but it could be intrusive. With earplugs it was controlled.
- Calade8 (10/5): Another Perfect Stay - I choose this hotel every year for a prolonged stay, and am never disappointed ! There's the beautiful, spacious room in my favourite street, hidden from the city bustle in a secret tropical garden. The charm and efficiency of the staff. The knowledge that everything in this hotel has been personally curated by genius hotelier Chris Ong, from Fuan Wong's pool side sculptures to the tea time treats.
I noticed that this year there was additional, very effective soundproofing against the occasional nightclub noise .... which has actually never bothered me. (Should guests want absolute silence, then George Town in general is perhaps not for them ! ).
In an increasingly standardised travel universe, Muntri Grove Hotel is quiet luxury, at a very reasonable price.
Notre chambre etait a l’etage.
Mauvais wifi
- David (10/5): - This hotel is part of the George Town Heritage Hotels group and is situated just off Lebuh Muntri which is a fairly quiet street parallel to the busier Lebuh Chulia. It is a very peaceful hotel but is affected at night by the noise from Lebuh Chulia.
The room we had was nice and big and the staff were very attentive. It doesn’t do food but we found the Mews Café about 100m along Lebuh Muntri which does very tasty breakfasts for MYR35 and also has an a la carte menu for evening meals if you wish.
We would definitely go back there should we be on Penang again.
- Jason (5/5): - The location is perfect, the staff are friendly and the hotel is very charming. I really appreciated that the staff accommodated our request for rooms to be together. I have stayed at Muntri Grove both solo as well as with my family at least a half-dozen times over the last 4 years. While it has been our hotel of choice, we're now starting to think about alternatives for a couple of reasons. One is that the nightclubs behind the property now play very loud music from 9pm until 2am, and it can be heard in the rooms every night. Secondly, the facilities are getting old and are in need of a little love.
- Lawrence (9/5): - Gorgeous building and rooms, you really feel like you’re staying in a part of Penang history Light switches could have done with some labels (only because the room was so big and there were so many lights!)
Lack of breakfast was a slight downside
- 24letters (8/5): H is for Heritage Hotel - Muntri Grove is a beautifully restored heritage building just off Muntri Street in George Town. It is a great location to explore the UNESCO heritage precinct, street art, trendy coffee shops, street food, bars and restaurants. Muntri Grove provides a quiet oasis during the day, note I said 'day'. The rooms amenities are adequate for the price point, rooms are well kept and clean with rooms cleaned before lunch. Staff are friendly and accommodating. The hotel represents value for money.
Unfortunately, thanks to the the sonic boom of the night club music bouncing off the windows in our downstairs room until 3am every night of the week. I was unable to get a decent night sleep on each of the nights we were there - yes I did try earplugs. For this reason alone, I would not return to Muntri Grove on my next visit to Pinang. I value my sleep too much.
- anniey933 (8/5): Friendly and helpful staff - This is at least the 4th time I've stayed here. The time before was 2020 and there have been a few small changes since. What hasn't changed is the friendliness of the staff. Though they were all relatively new everyone was kind and helpful.
What hasn't changed is the hardness of the mattresses or the noise from the nearby nightclubs. They have tried to address the issue but as most of the noise comes through the roof, it's a hard problem to solve.
On arrival you used to get a welcome drink - this has stopped which is a shame, it was a nice touch.
The rooms are large and have everything you need. The hotel is handy for food places which is good as no food is available on the premises. The pool is smallish but great for cooling off.
- ElizabethCHK (10/5): A gem of a place! - Utterly delightful stay at this central Penang hotel. Large spacious room, good shower and plenty of space to relax.
- Amanda (9/5): An amazing place to stay to explore Penang. - This is great place to stay to explore Penang. It is a beautiful building with large, spacious air -conditioned rooms. There is also a swimming pool and the delicious free ice creams are a welcome bonus! The staff are so friendly and helpful. Whilst there is no resturant on site, it is not a problem as there places everywhere to find the amazing Penang food.
You can explore Georgetown on foot, but if the weather is too hot, there is also a great free bus which is a frequent service.
I would definitely recommed Muntri Grove.
- Stephen (9/5): Very good stay perfect for georgetown - No signs on Muntri road pointing to hotel, small lane leading from muntri road down to hotel needs smartening up,open drains gullies need covering.lot of money spent on hotel outside ground/entrance looking good but approach lane needs work As above.
- yann (10/5): Un magnifique endroit - Un endroit formidable.
- Susan (8/5): Excellent most of the time. - Excellent old town location, walking distance to many things, hotel slightly hidden. Friendly staff. Nice big spacious room. The extra free ice cream is a nice touch. The unfortunate proximity to late night bars with loud music and bad singing till 2 am on the weekend. Some little things, safe broken, pool water could use a bit more frequent cleaning.
- Stephen (8/5): A lovely place to stay in central Penang. - A very traditional place to stay in central Penang.
Room was good with authentic decor. Pool was a bonus.
Staff were helpful.
- catherine (9/5): - Chambre spacieuse, bien décorée, confortable. Bien placé. Très bon accueil
- ffort (10/5): Great heritage hotel and customer service. - Great heritage style hotel. Very close to every landmark or a short taxi ride. Amazing customer service, room large and with a comfy bed. I stayed in the lower ground . Lovely pool on the first floor where they serve afternoon tea. All was great and a great experience.
- Dagmar (8/5): -
- LoveTravel809603 (10/5): Excellent location! - Friendly employees who welcomed us warmly at this charming hotel.
We really enjoyed its convenient location & delightful rooms.
Whilst near to nightlife, our sleep was not disturbed.
I would highly recommend.
- Soojano (8/5): A good hotel with room for improvements. - Great hotel with friendly service overall. The rooms are clean and spacious, and good location and nice atmosphere hidden in the alley. The unfortunate very loud music from the neighborhood adds noise level over the weekend. And the pool could use a little servicing and more filtering system so the water is not murky. Good value. And the added extras like tea and cakes on Friday and Saturday and the free ice cream is a lovely gesture.
- 582tamarah (10/5): Great place to stay - As a family of five, we stayed in two double rooms on the upper level near the pool. The communication and booking process prior to our arrival was great, and we found the staff to be helpful and friendly when we arrived.
The rooms were amazing, so big and beautifully decorated. The decor around the hotel was lovely and felt very special. The pool was lovely and often much needed after exploring the city sites.
It’s in a great location, lots of food places nearby including Red Garden, which we ate at a couple of times. Yes there’s music from a nearby venue that you can hear at night but it wasn’t particularly loud and didn’t bother us too much. Light sleepers might feel differently but there’s earplugs on offer.
I definitely recommend this as it is one of the most memorable places I have stayed
- lisalB5830GC (10/5): Tranquil oasis in the heart of George Town! - This is lovely gem tucked away on a quiet side street with incredibly helpful staff. As a middle aged solo female traveller I felt safe and welcome. I especially loved the tiny pool and fountain surrounded with greenery, making the centre of George Town feel like a private island.
- ilydac (10/5): warm stay in a beautiful local hotel! - beautiful little heritage hotel well-located in the heart of georgetown. stayed 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it.
rooms: tastefully decorated and spacious. there were separate sleeping and sitting areas, which we appreciated. saw many reviews about the noise situation but we thought it was perfectly fine — there were soundproofing curtains which were very effective, not sure if they're a recent addition.
building: interesting architecture, colonial look with peranakan influences, i personally adored it. not much in the way of amenities but there was a swimming pool that was reasonably well-maintained. exceptionally located near loads of eateries and cafes (try project gelato!)
service: staff was very warm, suffian in particular was very helpful with recommendations. daily housekeeping was great. loads of nice little touches like complimentary ice-creams at the pool, and saw the staff putting up decor for cny too.
all in all, highly recommended if you're looking for a local boutique hotel stay!
- 221kathrync (10/5): Fabulous 6 night stay - We had a fabulous 6 night stay at Muntri Grove. Our spacious room on the 2nd floor felt even more spacious with the vaulted ceiling.
The room was spotlessly clean. It was in a great location, walking distance to all the main sightseeing areas of George Town. The pool was very welcoming for a dip in the afternoon after we'd finished our sightseeing.
But most of all, the staff were so helpful and friendly especially Suffian who we had the most interaction with. He gave us some excellent restaurant recommendations.
There is music noise but that has nothing to do with the hotel. Just pop some earplugs in and all is good.
A well renovated colonial hotel in an excellent location with amazing staff. It was a lovely all round experience staying here.
- Virginia (10/5): We stayed for a week at Muntri Grove. We highly recommend it. - A lovely 2 storeyed heritage building with spacious rooms with outside terraces on the ground floor. We really enjoyed the swimming pool. The property is very well maintained. The staff were excellent- friendly helpful and efficient. Nothing
- Robert (10/5): -
- IgnotasP (9/5): - The room was big, looked authentic. Great staff, free ice cream. Cheap laundry. Noise from nearby bars at night. Toilet is in the middle of the room and the door is with gaps. The TV is basically not working.
- Uzma (9/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): - The staff were extremely nice. The room was clean but rhe property was gorgeous. Truly beautiful and tucked off in a remote area. I will be back ad this hotel was booked up when I tried to extend my stay I loved everything.
- janetb847 (10/5): We loved this hotel. - We had the best experience at the Muntri Grove Hotel. The rooms were spacious, beautiful designed, comfortable with great lighting options. Lots of electrical outlets and generous amount of complimentary tea coffee and snacks The swimming pool was divine. The staff were professional and very friendly. This hotel was the highlight of our hotel experience in Malaysia. Highly recommended if you like small unique and sophisticated hotels.
- B4941CHlindal (10/5): Amazing Muntri Gove Hotel - The location was fantastic walkable distance to the Blue mansion, food and old town.
- Traveller X2 (10/5): Home from home - Just as shown in the pictures. Lovely big room and very comfortable. Great shower and had the best nights sleep. Great location for exploring all of George Town and close to the bus station. Great eatery opposite called spitfire for food and drinks. It would have been nice to have sun loungers by the pool upstairs.
- lubie1 (10/5): Beautiful hidden gem - Off the beaten path you will find this beautifully appointed inn with the smoothest hardwood floors and a great pool deck on the 2nd floor roof where we chilled and read during the afternoon of our stay. The room itself has a gorgeous 4 poster bed and lounge area and a kimono for your use. On top of that it is located on a quiet street but very walkable to the street murals and great food options of Georgetown, Penang. Loved our stay!
Hele ruime, luxe kamer.
- Natalie (9/5): very comfortable. - Very comfortable room. Good location. Has a nice pool.
- Yong (9/5): Wouldn’t mind coming back to this unique shophouse again! - Staff were friendly & helpful. Property was located in a quiet yet walkable distance to attractions. Overall chill environment. Room was spacious & comfortable. We were well-aware of the potential loud music that might be heard in the night but they were honestly rather faint. We slept well :) Floor was a little dusty. Bathroom tiles were slightly uneven, which could have been slightly hazardous. Mosquitoes in area. Main door lock was a little wonky, required numerous attempts before we could lock it up.
- Caitlin (9/5): - Super cute room, nice pool, super friendly staff. Have stayed multiple times and would stay again :) Totally out of their control, but there is a nightclub next door that blasts music late at night, and then a school on the other side that has screaming (playing lol) children of a morning, so would not recommend if you're a light sleeper.
- Su Ling (9/5): We would like to visit again! - Our room was charming and clean, thanks to Mr. Krisna and his colleagues. The staff professional, friendly and very welcoming. Ms. Chan, Mr. Martin and En. Suffian made every effort to ensure that guests were well taken care of. We enjoyed the afternoon tea very much, and chatted with some friendly Australian guests, which enriched the experience.
Highly Recommended!
- Mohd Fahmi Zulkefli (8/5): -
- Kerry (8/5): Georgetown heritage site for a relaxing stay. - It was well located which allowed us to walk around the Georgetown area. The style of the property was very nice and I especially enjoyed this being preserved. In the evenings the music venues music drifted into the room.
- Suzanne (3/5): Sadly disappointing - The room was a good size If I was rating a 1 or 2 star hotel my view would be different, but a hotel that claims to be 3 star, service and facilities were far below expectations. They should not be charging prices befitting a 3 star when only offering substandard service. They hadn't even bothered to make sure there was a bedside table each side of the bed instead putting the fridge right next to the bed, to act as a "side table".
There are no facilities here at all. We had to go to a nearby convenience store for get milk for our tea (teabags were provided on the first but not replenished).
There is an outdoor bar nearby that plays loud music until early hours in the morning, in our case 3am. As the hotel is not soundproof this the heavy beat can not be escaped. The staff told us that the upstairs rooms were better, this is not correct at all. We couldn't escape the noise anywhere in the room. I think you might fair better downstairs, where the neighbouring building walls may help muffle you from the sound.
- Nicola (10/5): Fantastic hotel with everything you need close by! - Great location, beautiful well maintained and appointed room, with lovely old world charm. Pool is great to cool off. Staff very attentive.
Tutto perfetto
- Vinnss (6/5): -
- capsicum0620 (8/5): Excellent - Perfect location, on a quiet street, right behind the Japanese school. Spacious functional room with a great lighting system.
The welcoming atmosphere and nice furniture inside the room are definite "pluses.".
Good mattress.
The staff, both Front D and Housekeeping, are friendly and very helpful (special mention for the Night receptionist).
- Stephen (8/5): Nice, convenient and helpful hotel, shame about room decorations. - The location is excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The quality, size, facilities of the room were very good, but they had had a water leak in the room above and the peeling plaster patches in our room (4b) were not a pretty sight. I thought they should have remedied that, before letting it, as it’s not a cheap hotel.
- Wilson (9/5): Good, central location, nice vibe with helpful staff. - Big room Late night music from other entertainment outlet.
- Katriina (9/5): Kodikas ja kaunis hotelli hyvällä sijainnilla. - Sijainti, siisteys, ihana henkilökunta, kaunis ja tilava huone.
- 366katriinak (8/5): Cozy oasis in the middle of Penang heat - Cozy, clean and spacious rooms with beautiful decorative details. Charming, friendly and cheerful staff! Good location close to Red Garden. We especially liked the white coffee in the room, complimentary ice creams by the pool and the Friday afternoon tea. We slept well, despite the live music somewhere nearby, as we always sleep with earplugs on. We heard the music but it didn’t disturb us. For five stars, we would love some lounging chairs in the frontyard or by the pool, and the water pressure in the shower could be better. All in all a pleasant 3-night stay!
- dannylN8670PT (10/5): Amazing and good vakue for money. - Clean and great hospitality. There us a small swimming pool and filter water. There is a guide in room on the famous food in Penang.
Red garden is 3 mins away from Muntri groove. Very convenient to get a grab or walk to nearby restaurant.
- Liz (7/5): - Comfort inside and out. Close to everything. Neighbouring loud music noise into the early morning. Obviously beyond their control but maybe could be investigated.
- Roving56176004735 (10/5): Charming stay and wonderful staff - We just fell in love with this beautiful heritage hotel. Our room was charming and spacious. The beds were very firm, but staff was so gracious and remedied our bed with a topper. The staff was so helpful, kind and wonderful. The pool was a great little oasis and the ice cream bars were a delicious treat to have. Easy walk over to the sister hotel for breakfast and great location. Would stay here again.
- Sara (10/5): Perfect stay in GT - Super céntrico.
- 340nitsar (10/5): Truly wonderful experience - Georgetown is not short of Heritage hotels. However, Muntri Grove Hotel is the example of what a Heritage hotel should be, where it's not just the building but the staff that reflects the standards of a bygone age. Totally efficiency and willingness to help sets the Muntri Grove Hotel apart. The building itself is truly beautiful and a pleasure to stay in. What is so evident is the sheer meticulousness also of the maintenance and housekeeping to keep this building up to the very highest of standards. The reception stuff are simply in a class by themselves, wonderful level of service. We will certainly be looking forward to coming back again, thank you so much.
- Ness (9/5): - Location was very good lovely staff.. Pool was bit slimy and signs of algae
- Mobile61040701382 (10/5): Good peaceful rest for a busy city - An amazing stay. Just the place I need to do my short Penang trip. More details below:
The Good
- Ambience is just perfect, classical but not over that make it look fake
- Surrounded by green make it more welcoming than usual
- Room are spacious and beautifully design
- Lobby are quite beautiful too. You can tell there's a lot of effort into the Interior Design of the whole hotel.
- It's further from the street , i.e. less vehicles noise
- Staff are so friendly and accomodating!
- Great pool to swim on a hot afternoon despite the small size, just enough to dip in
- Complimentary drinks and icecreams for guest
- No mosquitoes complaints
- Excellent location for everything (eats, drinks, hanging out) in walking distance!
The Bad
- None.
- Even if I'm nitpicking, there's no breakfast but honestly, you can get better options just by walking around the street of Penang.
Just OK
- You'll see a lot of reviews on the noise complaints by the nearby clubs/live bands but honestly, it's quite minimal and muffled that it's insignificant. I slept fine. Again, each individual's experience are different, so unless you're a light sleeper that wakes up by the sound of a nail drop, this place is just perfect.
Tips:
- Parking is quite limited, be wary on that if you're booking cars
- Paridhi (9/5): Charming and like a home away from home. Would come again. - It’s a lovely nook with tasteful decor and an old school charm with modern amenities. The staff were incredible - attentive and knowledgable. The pool is a hidden gem and we also enjoyed the afternoon high tea organised by the property. Would love to visit again! It could get a bit loud at night cause of surrounding bars but that’s understandable given it’s so centrally located.
- Seng Chit (7/5): We would stay again. - Excellent location. Decent room size. Clean and comfortable. The noise from the other establishment across the road and also the room directly above us.
- Ann (9/5): Fantastisch - Heel hygiënisch en zeer vriendelijk personeel
- C (7/5): Muntri Grove intensified my love of heritage architecture. I can’t wait to explore more of what is so uniquely George To - This was one of 5 places we stayed at in George Town. The original room on the ground floor had issues with mold, paint peeling off the walls. When we broached our concern, the resourceful staff graciously offered a solution. Our new room was wonderful, from the high wooden ceiling to the comfortable seating area where one could lounge. It felt like we were visiting a favorite aunty’s home, all the nostalgia you need to slip into the past, effortlessly.
The architecture, especially the modernization that complimented the original heritage home and the decorative accents from a bygone age made the experience worth while. Touches like the four poster bed with mosquito net added utilitarian charm, adjustable shutters that allowed light in, or shut it out. The ceiling fan and AC. We could draw the curtain for more privacy, or let in more light otherwise.
The ample supply of filtered water from the dispenser on the 1st floor, and glass reusable water bottles.
Cooling off in the pool at night. Toilet paper could not be flushed. Sadly the noise from the nearby open air karaoke bar (till 2am during the week) is unbearable. We came prepared with earplugs as some prior reviews mention this.
- Sightseer19567641308 (10/5): Delightful treasure - We loved our stay 4 days/ 3nights. The hotel is delightful- we had a lovely heritage room that is light and spacious. The hotel is centrally located, close to many eateries and within easy walking distance of what Georgetown has to offer.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
The lovely four-poster bed was very comfortable.
Highly recommended
- Esmee (8/5): Pareltje in Georgetown.
- Brenda (10/5): Book it , don’t keep looking ! - Loved everything, superb layout . Beautiful interior . Staff were fabulous ! A bonus seeing the troop of speckled face langurs pop by near the swimming pool . The pool was perfect temperature and the mango icy poles were delish. Thanks team Muntri !
