Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not a good experience - Very tired and old rooms. Service was awful with no restaurant and we could not get a drink after 9pm. Changed rooms twice.
- Victor (8/5): - Good location and meals available
- George (8/5): It's a Pub! - Lots of stairs...
- Ian (10/5): - Excellent staff room was good everything in the room was good and what you needed breakfast was great can’t ask for a better experience thanks
- Elaine (8/5): - Comfy bed, great location to the port if catching the ferry. Good check in and out process. Helpful staff.
- Cynthia (8/5): - Very clean and good amenities for an overnight stay. Excellent choice on breakfast menu and very good value for money.
- Kate (8/5): Ox Hotel Poole - Very comfortable for a short stay. A little noisy.
- David (10/5): The night before the Ferry - When we arrived the reception person was very nice. We had a bit of trouble finding the car park. We had food in the pub which was very good, It was a bit noisy out side, we were on a main road at a set of lights and it was also Bike night at the shore front
- Cynthia (10/5): Good value for money. - Our standard room was clean and well equipped. It did have a fan but no airconditioning. Tried to leave the window open but the noise from an extractor fan unit outside below our window was noisy.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Definitely one to avoid. Car park is tiny, only space for 4 or 5 cars, maximum. Very awkward to get in and out.
Dining ends at 9pm. Interior is very poor condition: everything is chipped, marked or peeling. Could hear traffic all night.
At breakfast, there was very little food available, and when I ordered, staff member forgot to bring.
Very disappointed.
- Gregory (8/5): Convenient abode. - Very friendly staff, and local knowledge great. Parking in the Ox car park is limited. So I'd recommend parking on arrival and using buses/taxis if you can. The bus stop to the centre is just across the A35 and the M1 bus drops you from town right ouside. There is a small car park on the A35 nearby. Parkstone railway is also very close.
Apparently some more decorating is ongoing. Hopefully that'll include a new stair carpet. The bar is trendy cosy and rustic. Nut I feelbthe ale is overpriced. Maybe have a dsily happy hour to bring in the punters.
The choicevis good. The rooms are large and plenty of storage.
Overall a great and convenient place to stay.
- Trina (10/5): Close to poole port - Room was nice and clean apart from it was a boiling day and we couldnt cool the room down. The roads never stoo mind so be aware of noisy traffic which is to be expected. Lively staff. Very polite. Nice bar and restaurant serving drinks and good food. All in all though i enjoyed my one night stay which was close to the port 15mins away
- Rob (10/5): Bigger mugs but lovely hotel. - Lovely location and a great hotel. We parked nearby on the road although there is a small car park around the back. Bigger mugs for the rooms would be nice though. We didn’t eat as the kitchen was closed on Sunday but would love to come back to try the food.
- Ray (8/5): - Nice restaurant clean room lovely bathroom good quality fluffy towels
- Richard (10/5): Nice old hotel - Nice old hotel been here for a very long time and still wearing well. Nice big comfortable room
- Kim (10/5): - Was lovely and clean, would definitely stay again
- Thomas (2/5): - Booked a three night stay. It’s advertised as having boutique bedrooms. Watermarks and cracks on the ceiling , ring marks on bedside table, dirty marks on net curtains. Went and told staff we would not be staying they offered another room almost as if they weren’t surprised!! We declined the offer. Was told by staff member to get In touch with Expedia and she would arrange a refund! Put in a complaint and still no response
- Camelia (10/5): 25th Anniversary Party Stay - Lovely hotel and staff, the room was nice too. We stayed as an an anniversary party in the venue attached.
Breakfast was lovely.
Only criticism would be that the rooms were quite warm.
- Ryan (8/5): Comfortable but attention needed - Room was comfortable, bathroom was well appointed, always nice to see an extra effort made there.
Improvements could be made with regards to the bed, carpets, furniture etc as beginning to look a bit worn.
Breakfast was very good.
- Karen (6/5): - Very steep flight of stairs, room small, no chairs, noisy road traffic.
- Gary (4/5): Presented and hosted great, bed horrendous!!! - Check in was great, host waiting to check me in. Room was clean and presented lovely. The only reason for the bad review is the bed, it was horrendous, it was so soft, it felt broken and I felt like I was being bent in half, ended up sleeping on the floor just to get a couple hours of sleep.
- Sean (10/5): Great for what we paid - For the price we paid it was good accomodation. The room would be better if it was painted a lighter colour as it seems to dark. Loved the restsurant downstairs.
- Samantha (6/5): Nice stay - Super location for the lovely area of Ashley cross. Our room was small but super bathroom (note no door so that may put some people off). We had two singles put together one mattress was perfect and quite firm the other my husband described as a bean bag. It was a warm day when we stayed and there is no air con and unfortunately the fan provided didnt alleviate the temperature. Fabulous staff - clean room and we would stay again albeit wouldn't chose room number 2.
- Alex (10/5): Recommend this place... - Very friendly staff, room was lovely. Only downside was a small carpark.
- Ian (4/5): Pretty awful experience - not good at all, booked for 2 nights but left after 1. The main issues were noise and parking, there is virtually no parking and the local car parks are 4 hours maximum so I had to park a considerable distance away. The room was nice but there is no double glazing and it is on a very busy road with lots of bikers and this goes on throughout the night. Nobody available in the morning and no breakfast option that I could see so all in all a bit of a disaster, needless to say I won't be returning
- Tara (10/5): Very nice pub hotel - Very nice and well appointed little hotel. Didn’t have breakfast as the timing didn’t work for me but it’s 7:30-9:30 weekdays and 8:00-10:00 at weekends. Comfy beds, good shower. Friendly reception.
- Pauline (10/5): - nice shower room. lovely hospitality tray with hot chocolate and biscuits and water. Staff really nice and friendly. nice to be able to come and go at the side of the bar area. It was very convenient to where my friend lives and works. Hoping to be back later this year. many thanks.
- Alison (10/5): Lovely little find - The hotel has a lovely vibe about it. We booked a table and the foid was amazing, generous portion sizes and full of flavour. The room was clean and warm, slightly small but plenty big enough for us. The car park is very small so could be a problem at times. Staff very helpful and we would definitely stay again.
- Louise (4/5): Wouldn’t stay again. - The room over all was very tired looking and in desperately needing some tlc, however the bathroom was in good condition. The window in our room was terrible and wouldn’t close properlamd
- Les (6/5): COULD BE 5 STAR IF ONLY ! - A great style property but a little run down. Great restaurant but if only the building/rooms were up to the same standards it would be 5 star! In our opinion they need to employ an "Odd Job" person to handle the little issues such as loose windows, lack of heating through radiators. the odd lick of paint required here and there. That said, would definately return if needed.
- kevin (8/5): One night special - So we booked this at last minute due to a hiccup
Elsewhere
The hotel is an old pub/ hotel
The owner is a great guy who is very pleasant and is turning it into his place
The rooms are being worked on the bathrooms in all the rooms we had4no were great all the guys loved them
I was the only one to eat here as it was only a one night stay
Wow I had the meat box wings ribs and doing rooms -delicious and saves too
We were only passing through but please give it a go if passing again I would boom this place especially for the food
- Nicola (6/5): Clean but shabby - The Ox has great curb appeal but not very welcoming on entering, it felt abandoned and we had to look for someone to check us in. The room was spacious and clean but definitely needs some work, a lot of cracks in the plaster and missing grouting in bathroom. The room was cold when we entered but didn’t take long to warm up when the radiator was turned on, lots of condensation around the windows and curtains damp by morning.
A comfy night and only minor tweaks to make it great 😊 The free parking on site was a definite bonus!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice little find - Reasonable cost, friendly staff. Comfortable stay with extras including tea and coffee making facilities and toiletries in the bathroom.
- Ivan (6/5): Breakfast abandoned on arrival - Part of the reason for staying was for the breakfast which we were only told on arrival that it was no longer available, no offer of a refund or any compensation
- Mark (10/5): - Rooms clean and comfortable staff very helpful food excellent and overall atmosphere In the pub great
- Julia (2/5): - It was unique in the fact that there were bed bugs in my room. The manager wasn’t there in the morning and I was given a fake email address to contact her to discuss the matter further.
- Chloe (10/5): excellent - fantastic stay really nice hotel, room and breakfast. Staff were amazing and went the extra mile for myself. cannot fault!
- Linda (6/5): - The property was quaint and cute. The staff was very nice and accommodating. I can see when the property was new, it was very nice. Just seems it’s a little tired and worn. Needs a refresh.
- Graham (8/5): - Ok
- Dominic (10/5): Top of my list all round excellence - The Service was amazing and breakfast was excellent I would recommend to anyone who is stopping overnight to take the ferry from Poole or returning, staff were friendly an welcoming, with a sound can do attitude
- Edward (6/5): - Room was unbearably hot, fan did little to alleviate this.
OK for one night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing stay! - We had a perfect stay here, highly recommend.
- Jonathan (8/5): The Ox is good - Lovely big room. Food really good. Very friendly.
- Roger (10/5): - Very welcoming, excellent staff and service - thank you for a lovely break
- Elizabeth (6/5): - The room was noisy as it is on the main road and I had no tea bags. The staff were very helpful
- David (8/5): - Good location, friendly welcoming staff and a great breakfast.
- Carol (10/5): - Great value
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very dark and dingy room.
Fire Alarm kept going off which didn’t help whilst trying to sleep.
Furniture shabby.
Bed linen clean and fresh towels daily.
Poor lighting in bathroom.
- Cheryl (8/5): Great stay - Fabulous location spacious room. Back of hotel best due to trams running directly outside front. Rooms dark due to age of property etc but well equipped comfortable and roomy.
Our only complaint was the hotel booked 2 trips for us, the times for both were changed but we were not informed
Hotel staff friendly and helpful with excellent English
Overall would definitely recommend
- Carol (8/5): Visit with friends - A very good ‘restaurant with rooms’ hotel. Super comfy beds, excellent breakfast, very friendly staff. The corridors and staircase are looking a little tired but our room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Highly recommend the restaurant too, had a great atmosphere and good food.
- Kirsty (10/5): - We stayed for two nights. Overall, an amazing stay. The bed was so super comfy! The room and facilities were good. The bathroom was big and modern. The only downside was having no door to the toilet!
The restaurant/bar was beautiful whether there for drinks in the evening or having a meal. Breakfast had a lot of options and was also lovely. Staff were really friendly and helpful
- Barbara (10/5): - Nice pub/hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Managed to get parked, which was a worry for us. The breakfast was good too.
- stephen (8/5): - Disappointed the restaurant was closed on Sunday and breakfast only started at 7.30. We had an earlier start.
- Seth (6/5): - Basic B&B accommodation
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overnight stay - Staff were very friendly. We arrived late at night and left early the following morning, not stopping for breakfast. Our room was at the front of the hotel and there was a lot of noise from the road.
There was no remote control so we couldnt turn on the TV. There was no matress protector on the bed and the duvet was stained.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointed - Not exactly what I expected from a 3.5 star “8.0/10 Very good” hotel. Staff were friendly, our bed was relatively comfortable and shower room was new and clean. But photos of the rest of the rooms on Hotels.com are either really old or photoshoped. We were in a dark room on the top floor with very low and slopped ceiling, only 1 out of the 5 light bulbs of the main light was working. The room was so small they couldn’t even fit a chair in. The carpet was old and the furniture dated. We were also facing the main road but had no net curtains, the main curtain did not block UK summer morning sun well so we were woken up at 4am; that’s after struggling to fall asleep the night before as the windows were not soundproof at all so you can hear all the Saturday night clubbers looking for late night snacks. The heater was also broken – we could not switch it off on one of the hottest days in the year. I thought I’d give an independent boutique hotel a try but after this I think I’ll go back to chain inns in future..
- Patricia (6/5): Ms - It was okay for a 3.5 star but the room was like a sauna couldn’t sleep, the noise from outside made it even worse as we could not close the window, which was stuck, even if we had managed to close the window the room would have been more unbearable to sleep in c/o heat. There was no one I could ask for a fan as it was quite late when we made it to our room. Bathrooms are very nice, the room could do with a carpet upgrade.
- Katherine (10/5): - Welcoming staff
Lovely room with comfortable bed big shower room
Thai restaurant large portions and very tasty
Enjoyed or stay
Would look forward to coming again
Kathy and Bill
- Paula (8/5): - Lovely property and decor. Delicious food and forst class service. It's a shame the Hotel is located on such a busy corner however a small parking area is available to the rear of the property which is always a bonus.
- Christian (10/5): - We liked the bay windows and the position of the bathroom in relation to the bed.
- Phillip (10/5): A great hotel - Normally I stay in a chain hotel but thought I would try something different a really good choice a great hotel
- Jessica (10/5): Perfect weekend stay - The staff were super friendly and extremely helpful. Loved every minute of it. It was the perfect weekend away. Breakfast was amazing too.
- Gabino (8/5): Coming back again - Beds were comfy, and warm rooms all clean. good value for money. great breakfast
- Vince (10/5): The Ox is prime fillet - Strangely I'm the only guest on site tonight and the check in couldn't have been easier or more pleasant.
Bathroom is excellent, beds fabulous AND I get breakfast in the AM...marvelous, what's not to like?
- Tracey (8/5): - good service, great food, basic rooms but clean and comfortable.
- brett (4/5): - Room was tired and not great but no chef in the morning and then when he did arrive the food wasnt great at all.
- Debbie (4/5): Family break - Upon arriving the hotel looked amazing, they have clearly put a lot of money into doing up the bar and grill. The guy on the desk booked us in and told us where our room was, because it’s such a large building the stairs were much longer than usual, my mom is 83 and I asked if there was a another room on a lower floor, he said unfortunately there wasn’t, mom asked if he could carry our cases up for us, not sure if he heard or not but there was no offer to do so anyway.
The room was clean but very tired looking, the central heating didn’t work but there was a small oil filled radiator in the room, it just took the edge off the cold. There was only 2 teabags so we had to ask for more, there was no housekeeping the following day so we had to ask for more milk as well, the beds were comfortable enough and the towels were lovely big white fluffy ones. Although we didn’t require the restaurant, it isn’t open on Monday and Tuesday, all in all I personally wouldn’t give this place as a hotel a recommendation. The bar and grill on the other hand is extremely good.
- daniel (6/5): - Friendly staff and a decent breakfast but the rooms haven’t been touched for years and my bed was like a soft banana. Exposed light bulbs and an old stained carpet in my room made it all a bit depressing and very dated. Certainly not how it looks in the pictures. All of that said for the money it could have been worse and my friend liked his room and slept well! Needs a refresh though for sure.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Apart from the fact there was no parking we had a really lovely stay
- John (6/5): Not going back - In general it was good but to find out on Saturday that there was no restaurant or bar on Sunday night was a bit off.
- Debra (10/5): - Great value - good location
- Gary (6/5): Nice. - The young who greeted us very helpful. They have a small car park which unfortunately was full but there was a car park close by. However its 4 hour maximum stay. Due to having to move the car we decided to eat out. The restaurant looked nice.
The place was nice overall.
- Nicholas (8/5): - Good location and free parking tho we could hear people outside in the street at night as its above a pub.
- Rebecca (6/5): A bit shabby - Broken glass in the bedroom window, two single beds put together to make a double, a bit shabby but ok. I wouldn’t not recommend but I wouldn’t recommend either.
- claudia (8/5): Fantastic Bank Holiday - Please with the long weekend staying. the room is just as describes, clean and comfortable. Very please with the services and the cleanness done daily.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Enjoyable stay - Enjoyable stay at the Ox hotel bar & grill. Friendly staff & excellent food. Clean & tidy. We were visiting family living close by so was an ideal base. Will definitely stay here again
- Susan (10/5): - Really enjoyed my stay as the room was so nice. The bed was so comfortable, really nice mattress. The bathroom was luxurious! Towels and toiletries were supplied. There was hospitality in the room, a tv and WiFi.
The only downside was there wasn’t a lot of space to park, but I did manage to squeeze in.
However, overall, I would recommend The Ox to anyone. First time I’ve been away for ages and it was so easy to book! Brilliant!!
- Scott (10/5): Comfortable stay - Beautiful restaurant downstairs. Rooms dated.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We have loved our stay at the OX! Very friendly staff. It was a great bed to sleep in, I haven’t slept that well in ages. It was extremely clean. I can’t comment on the breakfast as I slept well that I slept past breakfast time.
Thank you for a great stay, we will come back next year!
- Paul (10/5): Ox Hotel Bar and Grill - The hotel was very clean, with room service every day. Staff were all very helpful and pleasant.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely stay - Lovely hotel and host. Only issue is that there is only space for 5 cars on a first come first basis therefore ended up paying for parking as it is a very tight squeeze.
- Nicole (10/5): All round fabulous boutique hotel - Hotel in great location, central to lots of amenities. Food in the restuarant whether it was breakfast or dinner was outstanding. The room decoration chic & classy with bathroom being comtemporary, loved it & very cosy.
- Roy (6/5): Good but could be better. - Rooms rather tired.
If you are a elderly type person then you have no chance of getting out of the room5 due to door closure and door handle missing from inside of room. Also if your taller than 4ft 2 then you need to hold the shower head up as that's broken too. Loads of water stains to wood dresser from Cuppas being made. Also you'd better put the room kettle on 10 minutes before you want a cuppa as takes for ever to boil. Oh and if you want to open the window then you better be able to bench press 100lb as Sash Windows have no weights attached and so you need to lift the the pane and use the door safety chain to hold it open. Apart from that the Ox restaurant food was tasty and the Bar great.....
- Verified traveler (8/5): - No air conditioning which meant room was hot at night but fans were provided. Only small car park for 4/5 cars so had to use car park over the road.
Everything else was as expected and breakfast was well presented and tasted nice.
Would recommend for a short stay of 1/2 nights.
- Robert (6/5): Service very friendly but not very efficient - The staff were very friendly and helpful and the initial welcome was very warm. However, breakfast service was very slow and I was also not informed of the fact that the main entrance may be locked at certain times and was not advised of the alternative side entrance. Returning on Sunday night to find the door locked, I would have been stuck outside if I hadn't been lucky enough to encounter a fellow guest arriving back at the hotel.
- Trevor (10/5): Comfy stay - Very comfortable stay , friendly staff , great food , Nice comfortable bed house keeper was great 👍
- Carl (8/5): - Lovely hotel staff were fantastic, will return. 😁
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly and well equipped - Friendly staff, warm welcome. Large eclectic styled room, with plenty of plug sockets and lots of amenities. Very warm weather so the addition of a tower fan was helpful. Large bathroom with a large shower cubicle, lighting was poor though, so no good for putting makeup on. Would stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great night stay and very spacious rooms
- Zoe (10/5): Great location and surprising gem - We stayed at the Ox for two nights as part of our staycation in the South. This hotel knocked socks off the 4* Spa we'd been at for a previous stop on our trip.
Greeted warmly by staff when we arrived and told all details for parking, breakfast and entering hotel aftet hours.
Our room was clean and tidy with complimentary hot drinks and bottled water. Bathroom was modern and clean. Modern TV, hairdryer and plenty of storage. My only issue with the room was the weight of the door 😂
Restaurant was fabulous, staff attentive and it was busy, a sign of a good restaurant IMO. We would highly recommended and return to the Ox
- MISS B (10/5): - Such a good alternative to other big brand hotel chains. Great value for money and ideal location for Poole and Bournemouth.
- Ken (8/5): Good overall experience - Rooms are clean and fans are provided to help in warm evenings. Noise from road is bad early in the morning if you sleep with windows open. Restaurant food was great, breakfast was excellent, staff were very friendly and helpful. Very convenient for travel around the area.
- Jean (10/5): - My son & his wife stayed here for 1 night while visiting us. They had a lovely room which had a new bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. They would recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good customer service from the friendly staff
- Stephen (8/5): - Our stay was fine, eat in the restaurant first night, the food and service was good. Hotel, little dated but an old building so what do you expect. One issue I would change if management, the car park holds about 6 cars, ( 11 + Rooms ) , why would you let the bar staff use the car park when you have paying customers. Doesn't make sense and would put me off staying again. other than that all good.
- Sarah (6/5): Restaurant good, rooms very poor - Hotel had just reopened after lockdown and a refurb.the bar and restaurant were stunning ,beautifully done. The room wàs not ! Freezing cold, badly scuffed walls, badly chipped tile in the bathroom, toilet roll holder hanging off the wall. When you turned the tap on we got soaked. The sash window banged all night.
Restaurant good & we had a nice dinner, we were the only residents so felt bad at breakfast when a waiter and chef had to be there just for us.
- J (4/5): - Basic accommodation.
Very few parking spaces so we had to park on the road nearby.
We were told that they weren't serving food and they recommended a restaurant (Zim) which was closed. We ended up finding a nearby Italian restaurant that was cute but the food wasn't very good.
Nearby pub/drinking options but they all closed quite early for the weekend.
The person who checked us in knew that we were going out for a late dinner and didn't tell us how to get in so it took us about 5mins before we found a door in the back that worked with our key.
Bathroom smelled awful (sewage smell but cleared when we opened the door wide and sprayed the toilet).
Only two plugs and none near the bed.
Nop hair dryer or iron. Lacking a bit of homeiness or character.
- Verified traveler (8/5): A cheerful welcome, great breakfast. - In a busy and vibrant location. A cheerful welcome awaited us. Room was large and even though it had four additional lamps it was a bit dark. Proper reading lamps would be better. Pleasant shower room. A noisy road but that can't be helped. Stairways grubby. A great, well cooked breakfast with vegetarian option also. Downstairs bar interesting decor.
- Marcus (10/5): - Jess and Sheila made the trip even more pleasant. The room was great and the hospitality was excellent thank you for my stay
- Clive (10/5): - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and the breakfast was excellent. My Wife & I fancied an Italian meal for dinner and decided to eat at the Pulcinella restaurant next door to the hotel and it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had.
